In case y'all didn't know, ranged supports are legitimate troll picks that lose the vast majority of games they are used in.

Morgana and thresh are the only ones that are an acceptable blind pick. In a "protect the x comp" it is acceptable to pick Janna, karma, or lulu provided your team already has two frontline champions and reliable engage. It is acceptable to counterpick a ranged support like soraka into a tahm kench (this is an auto win lane due to counterpick and you simply bully out the tahm and take turret plates). At any other point and any other ranged pick aside from those mentioned and you are legitimately trolling and deserve to continue to lose until you learn just how awful these picks are in terms of composition and just how badly they gimp the team's ability to contest objectives post 15 minutes. Not adhering to this public service announcement means you forgo the opportunity to win games that last longer than the first ff vote point.

Jay, I love you, but fuck this post makes me wince a little.

As someone who's climbed from Silver to Plat with Support (and Jungle) repeatedly, using primarily Nami, Zyra, and back in the day Leona as well so I know of both the supports you're both claiming are good and troll, I'd say all were viable, and all had their pros and cons in Solo Q "mid elo". I've beaten Diamonds in Ranked before with Zyra even, though I'm unsure if nowadays i have the proficiency to do that since I focus more on WoW. Anyways, onto my actual points.

A Champion like Zyra/Annie/etc can be really good in both low elo and mid, and bad, depending. They're better at picking out the enemy's mistakes, but worse from recovering from your own team's. A Champion like Alistar is the opposite.

If I go in as Leona, I have -0- guarantee that my team will follow up. That is the risk that I am taking. If I lock in Alistar to protect my Vayne, I have -0- guarantee that my Vayne will be competent. That is the risk that I am taking. In the event that my Vayne is worthless that match (gets caught out frequently/doesn't attack move right/etc), Zyra would have been a far better choice. However, in the event that my Vayne is good and needs someone to help assist her in becoming a hyper, someone like Braum would be far better.

Of course, when you're squishy, you're running an additional risk. That is true. But you also have range to help buffer against that; using that properly is key.

The thing is I think Zyra (or Vel/Brand/etc) require a particular mindset to execute, both to use to their full potential, and to cover up their shortcomings.

Same could be said with Enchanter supports such as Nami/Sona, who in a way are sort of a hybrid between the two sides.

All in all, no one plays perfectly, and in the end, Solo Q is about how you patch up your team's mistakes, and abuse the enemy's. This is true for all elos, but especially pre-Challenger.

Your post also only points out half the equation, the support. Support+ADC synergy is very important. There are some lanes where mage Supports accentuate the ADC incredibly well, same with enchanters. Considering that, + the enemy ADC and what they are, is key.

Overall, it's best to see what fits your playstyle more than anything to climb.

Some of those picks you listed are pretty troll though. TF, Nid, no bueno. But yea, overall I think your post is way off.

That will obviously never change and there's 0 value in these champions :^)
