@riot why is unlimited wave clear bad for mages but okay for assassins?

I don't think I know of any other class forced into a set build path than mages (referring to Brand Velkoz Ziggs Malzahar, etc) where mana is an issue before even finding out who your matchup is! To my understanding mana was nerfed because mages were overbearing in the lane for wave clearing and sending x champion back (unfun to play against). Can I ask what the hell are mages are supposed to excel at? aoe team damage doesn't really apply when the team fight is over in under 1-2 seconds. Why is it okay that ZedYasuo has unlimited wave clear potential but its not okay if Velkoz does?

Mages do it from 1k range, assassins do it from a lower range. Mages have easier access to it.

Zed is one exception because his Q and especially shadow Q have pretty long range... but they lack damage. If he only uses the normal Q its not free waveclear and also a loss in damage that he should put on the enemy. His E is basically melee range, that's cost enough.

Mages have range

Assassins need 3 movement abilities, Stealth, Or ranged abilities to span the distance to get to you, Or else they'll just get fucked over

Or get ahead, and buy a few items to help survive
