As a veteran player, I feel treated like garbage by riot games.

I'm playing this game pretty much exclusively for 6 years now. And many of my friends are the same, and so are most of the players i meet ingame. For a computer game, that's incredible. I think League of Legends has one of the most loyal and devoted playerbases the video-game market has ever seen. But it feels incredibly weird to me. Every other business would do their best to keep longtime customers and not upset them, but I feel riot games doesn't give a thing about me. I feel neglected and see riot games, as a company that is just kneeling and begging for new players to enter their game.

-Matchmaking is terrible. It's designed in a way to prevent loosing or winning streaks, to do its utmost to prevent new players from getting bored or frustrated, while sacrificing the gameplay experience of veteran players, that have a competitive spirit, looking the climb ranks. -Riot games replaced the old client with a terrible excuse of a new one. The new client is only usefull in having appealing visuals and some fancy animations that may be flashy for somebody seeing the game for the first time. But it utterly lacks in functionality. And please also remove the legacy cursor, because of how disasterous of an impact it would have, when a new player accidentaly presses a wrong button in the menu and gets to see something so visually unappealling. -And Idk anymore where exactly I've read/heard it, but riot said they prefered true dmg instead of amor penetration, because the concept of true damage is much easier to understand for newer players. Meanwhile all the longtime players are complaining about how true damage is just so bad for the balance of the game, but who are these veterans to be concerned about. -I remember how I've grinded IP for 2+ months to buy all the runes I deemed useful. And all that, just turns into dust with the runes reforged, giving me an abysmally bad compensation in blue essence, that I'm already sick of collecting anyways. What in the world, do I even need 20 rune pages for, that I spent 30€ on purshasing, just to now edit a single one in champselect? The new runes system is not even better than the old one. I had way more options to customize my strategy with the old one. Now I just go to probuild to copy paste the rune-choices for the champion I pick. IMO its only use is, to appeal to new players and make them exited to unlock a new rune when the hit lvl 12 or something and spare them from the grind it took back then. -The worst of all, is reading the stories here on the boards, of players who play as long as I do, that get their accounts hacked, with somebody with an Egyptian IP playing, while using scripts and insulting everyone arround. Then they ask the support to get their perma-ban removed just to be condenscendingly told that their account security is their probleme, while riot games is still living in the stone age where verification options via phone were not a thing. It's obvious that these players have not done anything wrong, and the effort it would take for the support to remove an unjustified ban is 1 minute at most. And that is too much, for a, maybe even decade, long loyal customer to ask for? (just to name some of issues, where I feel that riot treats me badly)

If I had to guess why?, it's probably because veteran players spend a lot less money on the game compared to new players. I play my favourite few champions that I already own a good-looking skin for. Also, veterans like me, are probably adults already and mature enough to not become gambling addicts to the lootbox scam of hextech-chest or the little-legends. And somehow I feel very sad how things turn out to be. I'm still here playing the game and ranting on the boards, but If riot continues like this, I feel like it will be my time to say goodbye very soon.

1000 RP WHERe?

Apparently since people are still downvoting this post, let me explain: http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=2285786

Back in 2012, Riot's servers had a lot of issues (of course) and in order to compensate for some players not being able to access their runes, Riot compensated them with 1000 RP. However, this wasn't fair to everyone else who was still having problems even connecting to the game. Instead of being a cool company and compensating everybody for their incredibly poor performance, Riot opted to tell half the community to fuck themselves, more or less.

I'm agreeing with the OP by calling out a very specific point in time around where Riot first started being disappointing.

But you're all too new to remember that so you wouldn't get the reference, so I'll face-tank the downvotes.

Every game has to evolve, become a better version of itself to keep players intrigued.Without change, players would get bored pretty fast. The problem with this game is that it's 10 years old already, and Riot kept making changes and implementing new things until not too long ago,2018,it became clear that the most recent changes were detrimental to the game and its playerbase, especially to it's older playerbase. And those changes,I'm not just referring to the damage creep, mobility creep and the horrible matchmaking, but also the client, the prestige skins and the scummy cash grabbing tactics. This led to a very large loss of revenue in 2018 that league experienced and a lot of players have said this game is going downhill, and in my opinion it is,based on what Riot did so far.

KalokasIsMyDaddy8/17/2019, 6:48:14 PM16 votes

Even if they want new players, it still doesn't justify their behavior against older players. This just makes their playerbase unstable, since no one in this game has any reason to stay if they fuck up even once.

New players get shit loads of BE, champions etc. just by leveling up from level 2-3 , 3-4 and shit, which take very few games while we get the fucking crumbs on the floor and then beg for more.

You are not.

You are treated like a wallet with an easily manipulated monkeybrain. Just like the rest of us.

Having just started this game a year ago I can confirm that the UI is extremely complicated and difficult to learn. I remember the first time there were so many buttons & menus I didn't know what the hell I was doing - and I am an Engineer!

I managed to stick around and figure it out but I imagine that players with a shorter attention span or low tolerance for cluttered UI's would be quick to uninstall.

The new runes system is not even better than the old one. I had way more options to customize my strategy with the old one. Now I just go to probuild to copy paste the rune-choices for the champion I pick.

You know a lot of people did the copy paste method with the old system too right? And you also know you can customize your runes with the current system too, right? Yeah, there's less to click, less miniscule power shifts to choose from, but they're still there, and each choice you make is typically more meaningful. Not to mention, you can do all these changes in champ select without having 8 pages of runes pre-built for each champ based on the matchup. You also don't have to grind IP to create all those pages. Finally, the current runes are generally a lot easier to get a grasp on and adjust on the fly compared to masteries.

You should post this to reddit. I agree with you and think it would get way more attention there.

League is circling the drain. Riots already jumped ship onto tft and the new fighting game, and when they fail and don't have anything to fall back to they'll have no one to blame but themselves

Reformed Raccoon8/18/2019, 7:12:13 PM2 votes

Not to mention how frustrating it must be to players to be playing in low ranks with diamond+ smurfs. All you have to do is reach 30 and you have everything needed. The runes are not difficult to get anymore, you can do everything on a lvl 30 account that you do at lvl 200.

True, feels like they don't have a basic knowledge of marketing.

I keep asking for an open match-making algorithm...... if we could SEE that it is not rigged, no one would complain about it. if we could see some clear flaw, we could at least point to them and ask for a change.

I stopped ranked this season, after being platinum every season since s4, because match-making is absurdly bad now. I think personal performance use to decide 80% of games, now it decides 20%. 80% are free win / free loss, in 20% you can make a difference. It's hard to keep try harding 100% of the time in that situation. And even if you do, you need HUNDREDS of games to climb, little by little..... it's terribly frustrating.

The worst of all, is reading the stories here on the boards, of players who play as long as I do, that get their accounts hacked, with somebody with an Egyptian IP playing, while using scripts and insulting everyone arround. This is an interesting point and I add to it. The acount security sucks sweety balls. Back in my prime days I used to boost a lot of people to higher divisions and if I recall correctly there were attempts to get some kind of account security into places, however, about 2 months ago when I was asking someone to help me with rankeds (had-still have no access to PC for couple of months and the LP decay is a bad thing). Now imagine what I could/can do with the number of unused accounts, which leads me to another point.

So I went to check out the account security and guess what, I could just change the email to a new one without knowing the first one in the first place nor authenticating via the old email address, and this is just ridiculous.

Needless to say I will never return to this game, just last 2 months on boards and I think I am done with RIOT games at all.

_Not worth my time anymore.

Edit: I also got one of my accounts stolen in a similar way, in general I was playing one day and the other day it was just simply gone. And because I had created few accounts that I still do have I could not correctly guess what sort of champions/runes/bullshit etc I bought at what order and they never bothered to reclaim my account, although having the right credentials, but not enough for them tho... _

Honestly the only things that make this game nearly unplayable for me are:

  1. Match making. -At gold 2 I had 3 silvers and a bronze 1 on my team. If you think oh your mmr is just low, well the enemy team had 4 gold 2s and a silver 2. No one had above a 53% winrate overall.

  2. If the right kind of toxicity got punished. I don't care if someone bitches at me and flames me all game. I will just mute them and ignore it if it starts to get to me and I tend to learn when ppl call me out, so I won't make a mistake again. I can't stand someone just not saying anything and soft inting by running it down every couple of minutes or splitting until dead 8x in a row not getting punished at all. If I call them out or tell them to go ruin someone elses game or uninstall, I get punished.

  3. IF THE CLIENT STOPS RANDOMLY CRASHING OR FREEZING IN CHAMP SELECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I think if riot just removed promotion series it would be much better. I've been btwn d5-3 for a couple of seasons before I quit. This current season is just horrible for climbing. It is a one sided stomp of players that literally don't belong in certain elos. I understand if someone has a bad game every once in a while, but the annoying part is having g4/p4/d4s in my games trolling bc it takes forever to demote.

I could rant about more like balance and such (I was an Akali OTP...), but I won't.

I wholeheartedly agree with the point that Riot always tries to appeal to new players at the expense of veteran players. Just like all other gaming companies, Riot does not care about veteran players at all because we do not contribute as much to their revenue as new players. Judging from the ranked ladder statistics, the player base declined a lot in season 8, and there is no sign of recovery up to this point. Riot has shifted its focus away from the classic League of Legends to "fun" modes like TFT and the upcoming card and fighting games. Absolutely no effort has been put into making the real League of Legends a better-balanced game. Heck, they even hired the guy who messed up WOW as head of the balance team.

Here is a list but not all,

  1. Removed solo carry potential and added bounty induced by farming
  2. Making effortless and easy to play champion stronger than they have ever been
  3. Nerfing champions with playmaking potential to the ground
  4. Adding very easy to land AOE one-shot execute ult with reset

Riot did all of these pretending they are making LOL a "team" game. But hey, what they REALLY achieved is making the game more appealing to newbie players who have no mechanics or nothing. Simple champions should not be weak, but they also should not have as much impact on the game as a harder champion that players spend a lot of time practising with.

Hexs Fortune8/18/2019, 2:43:20 PM1 votes

Think of it as if you were playing sim city. You'd allocate your funds towards gathering new players, not keeping those who had already stuck by you for 5 + years without needing much convincing.

Plus, that same group of veterans are more likely to age out into different life priorities (Family, career, etc).

Jerry SeinfeId8/19/2019, 1:22:21 PM1 votes

i mean whenever someone calls themselves a veteran player it's mostly cuz they feel that way. you guys have a habit of complaining.

-Matchmaking is terrible. It's designed in a way to prevent loosing or winning streaks, to do its utmost to prevent new players from getting bored or frustrated, while sacrificing the gameplay experience of veteran players, that have a competitive spirit, looking the climb ranks.

this affects everyone lmao. everyone uses the same matchmaking system how old your account is doesn't matter much aside from the fact that it's already established your skill level. Veteran players don't magically have this competitive drive and new players don't somehow care nothing for competing. I've seen plenty ppl who started after me who actually care about ranked, i cared about ranked when i started. And now here i am not giving a shit about ranked.

Riot games replaced the old client

God forbid a company modernizes their client. afaik more changes are coming and it's probably gonna serve as a client for riot's future games too. There's a few things lost and that's a shame, but stop ignoring the things they added.

I get that alot of ppl who play games have massive nostalgia boners for anything old but right now the new client is perfectly fine. honestly was fine for a large part of it's beta and post release. then it shat the bed for a few month's but now it's honestly performing fine again.

I remember how I've grinded IP for 2+ months to buy all the runes I deemed useful.

How the fuck is that a good thing?

to appeal to new players and make them exited to unlock a new rune when the hit lvl 12 or something and spare them from the grind it took back then.

the old system let you use a new rune every level as long as you bought em. so while you're right about keeping ppl excited it's not new. and that grind isn't fun, it wasn't fun and it would never be fun. the new runes system is our upgraded mastery system, the runes got deleted. get over it.

Also, veterans like me, are probably adults already and mature enough to not become gambling addicts to the lootbox scam of hextech-chest or the little-legends.

you'd be surprised how many "mature adults" buy that shit.

I hold this game in a special place in my heart ever since my brother showed it to me. I hate seeing the game I once was excited to play every day go to crap. They promised us a rotating game mode. Yep that lasted half a year. They promise alot and dont really deliver and they are becoming worse and worse. I cant believe the amount of broken promises they made. Its like they are a dead beat dad, making promises and not really keeping them. I understand to an extent but this is a gross and blatent push to the side let me watch the game kid. I like that they are comming out with new content but i dont think anyone asked for this we asked for urf (actual urf not arurf). I want to believe things are gonna change for the better but things have been getting worse and worse. No ones online because the toxicity and the client issues. I have a bug with my client thats been going on for 3 patches now and yes i have used the repair tool. Riot may care about thier game but it doesnt seem like it. I loved they were about their client base back in the day rather than money. It seemed like they actually cared. A few people that made riot great have gone to bigger things and great for them but the game they helped create is dying, Rapidly in fact. One issue after another, until the player base is small. Flashy things get temporary players, tried and true things make people stay. The only reason i still play is because my brother gets on every so often and my friends play aram or a rare norms. I want to believe, but I dont know anymore. Amumu

Riot destroyed my life. I wake up and the 1st thing on my mind is how can I avoid league today. It has ruined my happiness. It has ruined the raw and sheer enjoyment I had for video games. Now all I think is how, just fucking how do I avoid League Of Legends. I try and try to quit but being apart of league since the end of season 1-2, I just can't. I find myself sitting down at my desk and booting up league subconsciously. League was fun, but now it feels like no matter what rank you are or how good you are, it just saps your happiness. I hate this game with a passion. It treats older players like flies and swat us away to play and interact with the new players. It seems like you guys can't listen to the older players for shit. People complain about matchmaking and champs. But lets work on TFT. You wanna know how I know that Riot doesnt give a single fuck about us older players? I have ran it down on multiple accounts and afk'ed on said accounts with none of them recieving anything. If I applied for pbe on those accounts I would get it. This game isn't fun anymore. It feels like a job, where you constantly have to carry and if not, you get flamed into oblivion for not being "good". This game has brought me to tears and even the edge of suicide. But luckly my girlfriend is there to calm me down. Without her idk where I'd be or even if I would still be alive. I hope Riot doesn't dismiss this either. Riot, either fix your fucking game or your little shit indie moba game will crash and fucking burn. And trust when I say its heading there fast and steady.

You know why match making is terrible? Because of the memes, and you guys are enouraging them.

The Kombinator9/30/2019, 11:22:43 AM1 votes

I think the best part was when they sold the old rune system for 1ip each. Shortly before they implement the new one. I had a lot of fun times experimenting with stuff.

But to be honest i don't mind the new system. Grinding is bad for competitive play. The old guy already at an advantage from experience. No need to give him better stats too.

The flexibility, and balance of the runes are a different matter. If they ever bring back the old runes, then make them free. I wouldn't mind that, because there were so much more flexibility. Also you could reduce your counter's power with the right runes. Such as going full magic. res. as Nasus if you faced a Vladimir.
