How tf am I supposed to play renekton this season?

People keep telling me he's OP right now, and that I'm a noob and I suck etc etc, but they refuse to tell me what I could actually do. So help me out here. I generally win lane against non-garen melees, or hide under my tower the entire laning phase against ranged cancer, and then feel like a fucking melee minion after 10 minutes.

Like half the teams I play against are pure ranged comps, so I just die, instantly, without even being able to get within dash range of their team. If they're especially sadistic, they pick champs that can even outrange my double dash when I hit a minion first. The only kill potential is when my flash + double dash is available.

If I try splitting while ahead, they just send one guy to keep me off the tower and then come get free shutdown gold when somebody manages to bypass my wards because a 2 vs 1 is an instakill. If I try teamfighting, I have no engage, so I just sit around my team for 5+ minutes getting no CS, getting hardly any exp, and doing absolutely nothing.

If I'm behind, I literally get killed underneath a tower, or pushed out and watch as my towers fall like paper. Or I follow my team and do literally nothing.

If I build tanky, I still get instagibbed by 2 or more people. If I build damage, I get fucking 1 shot by anybody who manages to land a single skill shot or CC on me.

Like WTF am I actually supposed to do, theoretically, if I actually want to contribute to my team's chances of winning???

First off, fix your builds. You aren't a tank, so stop trying to build like one. Building tank on Renekton is only for if you are so far behind (and your team is even/ahead) that you have given up all hope of playing the game and converted yourself into a melee stun + meat shield. You should not be building that every game, or every other game, or even any significant number of games. Second off, stop buying Shojin as your first offensive item every game. Shojin first is for if you are ALREADY ahead (and are forcing your lead further); otherwise you get it 2nd and have Black Cleaver first. Likewise, don't build your offensive item 2nd or 3rd. Don't rush a fucking Bami's Cinder when you get an early lead. That's a complete waste of gold; you basically took 900 gold and threw it away. Renekton is a bruiser, so don't go building slow burn tank items on him because that's a complete waste. You want an early Tiamat, and then rushing to Black Cleaver or Shojin then the other. Early boots/upgraded boots is ok, but if you get a lead don't throw that lead away on defensive items.

Additionally, fix your runes and learn when to take which runes. Don't take Press the Attack vs a tank or other Bruiser; take Conquerer. You are tossing away free true damage + healing vs champions in the matchups that matters. Don't take Bloodline at all; you aren't an ADC, you aren't planning to get that Lifesteal to ignore a dedicated item for it lategame. You either want Alacrity for more sustained damage + more Shojin procs, or Tenacity for Tenacity. Bloodline is a wasted slot since your sustain comes mainly from your Q, Sterak's shield, and Death's Dance/Ravenous Hydra if a game goes to 35+ minutes. Taking a rune that does nothing for you until lategame as a lane bully is silly.

Basically, you are currently playing and building Renekton as if you are a Shen or something. Stop doing that. You are playing a murder crocodile, so build and act like it.

  1. Unless it's a tank/bruiser you should be able to dive that player easily when you're ahead (which you should be because you're Renekton). If it's someone that you can't dive just shove the wave into tower so that person is forced to cover and then you roam right away for numbers advantage. If the enemy has TP they're likely to be forced to use it, if not then enjoy the 5v4. If there is no play to be made then just go back top (or bot) and shove the next wave before roaming again.

  2. Pay attention to your map. Yes players can bypass wards, but that doesn't stop the fact that you don't see them on the map anyways. Unless you know that player's last known location in the last 3 seconds was a whole lane away just back off from what you're doing. Also try to not start pushing till your teammates are almost in position to get something done on the map (Dragon, Baron, towers, inhibs). If they aren't ready to pressure the map then just don't bother pushing since the enemy team will lose absolutely nothing for the time it takes to kill/chase you. Use the mini map before every decision you make.

I'd have to see your gameplay, but if youre ahead on Renekton you should be able to dive solo opponents under tower or win the 2v1 in a splitpush.

For ranged people focus on flanking and coming in after the fight starts, you aren't a tank and you can't really initiate 5v5 well.

Usually you want to split and force people to come to you, but don't fight if you can't win. When you have flash you group for objectives and flash on a squishy and John fucking Madden your keyboard with Shoujin. Properly executed a Renekton combo with damage items should murder squishes.
