This behavior needs to stop

Hold on stop, I'm sure you think this is another thread complaining about how people act in game. Well to the contrary, let me drop some truth on you.

It has become a fairly common opinion that the number one problem with league is the toxic community. People are always complaining more and more about the mean things that people say to them in game. Taken from these complaints, is Riot's mindset in which also believes that this is the number one problem with their game, which of course leads them on a crusade toward an unobtainable and idealistic world. The problem is that once you start drawing a line in the sand of what is okay and what is not, it never ends. It will always be pushed by anything that is borderline and did not make the cut. (Why is calling someone this okay but calling someone that is not?) First, the main points I'm trying to get across:

Riot - I absolutely respect what you are trying to do here with problem behavior. But you need to understand that in the world of online gaming, people messing with each other can never be, and should never be, changed. In your attempt to do so, you are fast approaching actions that will begin to drive the community away. What you have in place right now is plenty good enough (Language filters, ignore button, report button, etc).

**Players **- Let's just be honest here, a vast majority of us simply just do not care what some random jackass says online. We grew up in this environment, it's always existed, we've all done it at some point, and we forget about it the moment the next game starts or we walk away from our computer/console. We need to let Riot know that we don't care THAT much and to stop stressing out over it. Stop encouraging the emerging culture that is so easily offended that it ruins the game play experience.

MAIN POINT: The only outcomes that will come from chasing an impossible world (where everyone online is a complete carebear to one another) is one that is overly regulated, harshly / unfairly / inconsistently punished, and just as stressful as any other part of our lives. >> Grow a pair and stop caring about what people say online. You don't know them, its not personal. YOU should not let it effect YOU <<

Now lets talk about the WHY. My reasoning is as follows:

We need to take a look down the road and the possible outcomes of our actions and then compare them to the current environment. As the complainers get more and more support and nourishment from Riot and other players, they become the perfect metaphor of a spoiled whimpy child who continues to cry more and more over increasingly trivial matters. The only outcomes that can logically come from this is where Riot regulates so much that it feels like kindergarten all over again.

Next, let's look at the online gaming community. Is league really any different from other games? Every online game I've ever played (I'm 27 years old) has always had people giving each other a hard time. Quite frankly, I enjoy it. I'm sure theres a lot of people who do. If i get outplayed and some guy adds a "noob" on top of it, I smile and go "alright you bastard lets dance". I, like most people, take it for what it is.

Lastly and probably most importantly, this behavior will never change. No matter how much you try to regulate it, how much you try to control what people say or how they treat each other online, it will never change. The best you can do is put in the necessities and then just leave it be.

**TL:DR **People need to cool it on the complaining about behavior, the only thing you will accomplish is pushing Riot into holding everyones hand and treating you like school-child.

I got banned because somebody on the other team told me I ate ass, and i said wow I didn't know your mother told you that.

and im sure the one who started it got no punishment

Not sure, but i didn't get a chance to report him because i got banned immediately after the game. I've never had a chat restriction and ive never been banned before. Thought we were just having some smack talk in competitive nature but i guess i can't do that anymore

The thing is that most likely he had a smirk on his face when he reported you. I can almost guarantee he wasnt actually offended he just did it out of spite. I would venture to guess that this is by far the most common type of report as well.

Playing league is not like playing basketball with your friends. You don't know your teammates.

The social equivalent of playing league is working on a project at your job.

If anyone insults another employee the way I've seen ppl do on league, they'd get their asses fired instantly.

League is a game played for fun. I fail to see how its more like a job which is necessary for fueling the other aspects of your life more than another game you play with your friends.

But you don't play it with your friends nor do you play it with people you know in solo queue. Its the same social situation.

I think I get what you are trying to say but the metaphor you used really threw me off.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the point you are trying to make is that you have to come together coordinate with strangers to achieve a goal, thus insulting people should not be allowed as it is counter productive.

Most work environments consist of teams you spend a lot of time with and know really well, which is pretty much the opposite of your point. Further, work is a place that is typically highly regulated and stressful. I would venture to guess that a large number of people love playing games as a way to unwind after this type of environment. The second league actually turns into anything that resembles an actual work environment you will see an enormous evacuation of player base, simply because we deal with this already at work/school all day long... who really wants to spend their leisure time in something that feels like work?

I honestly don't care what people say. I play bronze normal, so nothing much matters in the games.

just turn off all chat.. there goes half your problem.

then mute everyone who rages at you. If it happens to be all of them.. so be it.. you can communicate to me by pinging..

Least now **I don't have to look at the chat to see salt when I should be looking at the map to see that VI coming to gank me.. **

Chatting on league is proven to decrease map awareness. :D

good post +1.

it is pretty sad. I just got a 2-week ban on my other account. Ill admit i was being a total assknob, but i don't think it was quite justified seeing as i've never been banned before nor chat restricted.

I am rarely ever toxic, perhaps 1 game in 100. No warning, nothing, just immediately banned in the post-game lobby. Sad thing is that it seems to be automated (no way could any person review the game's entire chat log in seconds).

I guess you get auto-banned based on frequency of reports, which speaks to what you just posted. people get salty and lose. "well ill just report this guy because he beat me." small revenge. so petty.

now I'm not complaining about this ban because i deserved to be punished. But I'm annoyed at how it happened. No warning. One game of rather high toxicity directed at one player (who also reciprocated the toxicity) and bam 2-week ban. .............. Now i know any more infractions will quickly result in a permanent ban of my account, which I've probably put $200+ into. So my best option is to basically /mute all and never type anything. At least that way if i do get banned, they can check my chat logs, which won't exist because I haven't said anything.

Ill honestly probably get better / climb faster by "/mute all", but it takes away a lot of the fun and camaraderie. Oh well, problem solved I guess. No more toxicity. No more anything

I've been thinking and saying this for years, everyone seems like a carebear now. Everyone gets offended so easily its not even funny. If you're playing bad, expect to get called out. Don't take it personal, if your shlt at a game, improve yourself. Learn that champion or role and get better. Don't say "i'm just having fun" and play it off like you don't care. Because maybe people in your game do care and they are actually trying to win.

well there is a difference of "you need to ward more" than just saying "GG go kill yourself you never ward"

I'm not saying that at all, the main point of my post is that what we have is good enough... going further and we are starting to impede on ourselves

I don't think the problem is that there are punishments for toxicity, but the punishment system itself is unfair and ineffective.

No, you should not be trying to give someone a hard time, or trying to piss them off. I have no sympathy if you're punished for those reasons. If you're telling someone they're trash, worthless, or using hateful speech in a game, then I don't think you should be playing with others. We're never going to live in an idealistic world, but that doesn't mean you get to act like a savage and rip into people. That's not a good argument to make because there are a lot of bad things in the world we can't stop, and we can't punish everyone who does these bad things, but does that mean we just let it go? Nope.

However I have seen people, myself included, get warnings for talking back to these people who start being toxic simply because the system reacts to volume of reports, and not how valid the report is. This is because the system determines this, and not a person.

Another thing that would go so far into helping this community battle toxicity is dealing with people who threaten and hold hostage their teammates in champion select by saying things like, "X or Feed". There should be a way to accurately report their behavior immediately, and there should be a vote of some kind to disband the lobby without any penalties. Currently we have no way to combat this behavior, and the trolls and brats know this. So someone either dodges causing them to lose LP and get leaverbuster, or they play this game with this toxic player with a feeling of resentment. This almost always breaks out in some kind of team fight, and you tend to lose anyways.

Also if you think you're doing your teammates a favor by calling them out in chat, you aren't. It does not motivate them, it is not constructive, and it causes them to either lose confidence in themselves or get in a fight with you. These outcomes annoy the hell out of me, so when I see someone doing that to another player on my team, I tell them to stop immediately.

Winning the game > Everything else. That includes you feeling the need to express your superiority complex.

If I see someone is doing badly I will try to encourage them and or tell them it's okay to lose a tower, and I will be there to assist them when I'm done with my objective. It is 100% more effective than berating someone who is already probably bummed they made a mistake.

It will only get worse if we let it continue. Because how and where do you draw the line?
