Why is Randuin's losing the power to reduce crit damage?

PBE

  • Cost lowered from 2900g to 2600g
  • Health reduced from 500 to 425
  • No longer reduces damage taken from critical strikes
  • Slow duration reduced from 4 to 2
  • Slow percent increased from 35% to 55%

I just find this a bit surprising that this is what they're currently planning for the item right now. The rest of the changes I'm fairly OK with but why remove the ability that makes you a little more resilient to ADC's shooting you down to hell before you can get to them, (or even block Yasuo's damage)? I'm not fully complaining but I'm just curious why they're removing it. Like, will this eventually come back in another item or something?

The item is already shit as is

Tanks go sunfire/gauntlet/ga and brusiers go deadman's or GA

It's literally only good vs a few champs like trynd and yasuo

yeah it was pretty weak b4 the changes

I'm guessing because many meta adcs don't build crit right now and they want the item to be more viable. Although I don't know why they'd reduce the health

I feel like the negated crit damage was just a flat stat that granted some power but offered no noticeable power. Usually it was just overshadowed by item 3742 or item 3068 when it came to an item where you needed to soak up some physical damage, as these items are more useful when it comes to that sort of thing. In addition, some of the power of item 3143 was wrapped up in that stat, which pretty much reduced the power of ONE champion per game (unless they had a Yas or Trynd top). Now, it can compete with the other items as the go-to item for wardens when they want a good AOE slow in teamfights in order to peel for their carries. Sure, the AS slow will be nice, but its not going to be one of the bigger selling points of the item anymore either.

You do realize Randuin's critical damage reduction applies to all damage that is marked as critical damage right? For instance this item works against Anivia's enhanced E, or Karthus' single target damage Q.

O man, "noticeable power"? That phrase is pure poison. :/

These changes feel like MR itemization got better (with the new MR item) and Armor itemization got worse. People are saying Crit is meant to be a tank-busting stat but if that's true, then why do Armor Pen and Lethality exist?

r4ndomkill2 votes

armor pen and lethality is for killing squishies due to it removing flat armor rather than a percentage. think of it this way, removing 20 armor does more damage to a 50 armor vayne than say a 200 armor cho gath.

this only works when you look at lethality (which is = flat armor pen) in a vacuum.

combine lethality with % penetration/shred, and it fucks over tanks aswell. right now you can reduce 300 armor on a tank to around 50 by stacking last whisaper with lethality items and cleaver.

because there is simply such a large amount of it.

fuck i hate math but let's do some. 300 armor 60 of it base 240 bonus armor 240 times .55 = 132 then if they have bc you add 132 and the 60 base you then get 192 multiply that by .70 they would have 134.4 armor that would be around 60% damage reduction removing twenty still does a lot less damage to the tank even with all the armor reduction

Lethality is weak against armor... since age

Doesn't Frozen Heart do something similar? They said they were making items more unique.

Profirix1 votes

Frozen heart only slows attack speed. It doesn't reduce crit.

Then I for one welcome our adc overlords.

Huh that IS weird, maybe theyre aiming for reducing autoattack damage or something instead?

Forhonor32110 votes

I mean if that's what they're planning then I'd probably be OK with it (somewhat) but if not I'm going to be a bit upset.

Supreme Senpai692 votes

Isn't that what Frozen Heart does basically? Reduces attack speed from attack attacks basically reducing damage and DPS. I build this item when I face people like Caitlyn who have crits in their kits

Kilanost1 votes

Slow percent increased from 35% to 55%

This isn't the attack speed debuff is it???

.... I hope it is now.

No, it's the active slow

Update on the removal of the critical damage modifier: they will also be looking at armor pen items and revising the way they work. So we can't say much on the general defense changes.

With the proposed GA changes it looks like riot may be making changes geared at making combat last longer overall in early/mid game. ADCs will be able to build a damage item with armor. (Would love to see ADCs chime in about how the pbe GA changes might affect their build path) I can also see ADCs taking Merc scim and scaling mr runes. Together these two items will give 30 armor and 35 magic resist plus the 40 ad from GA and 65 from Merc scim. And you get the lifesteal and cleanse from Merc scim and the GA passive. Big problem here is that it is less slot efficient for crit builders. With IE double zeal item builds and the GA plus scim you are left with one slot to give either boots or LW item. You could drop the GA and take ninja tabi I suppose. The more I look at this the less certain I am on how it could play out. Looks like the biggest winners on the GA changes will be bruisers and divers. I think that much is clear. 2nd/3rd item GA yolo turret dives incoming.

Whoops this thread was about randuins and I just wrote a novel on GA changes. Guess the Adderall finally kicked in. Time to hit the books lol.

Something about crit-based champs being meant to be effective against tanks. I'm also going to assume they'll give it more armor or defensive stats later.

From the looks of it it's been removed to keep Randuin's from becoming a "build every single game" item (which it might become if no changes were made to it while all the other changes went through) by giving it similar stats and a stronger situational active

Sohleks1 votes

It feels off when it's there to shame you that you don't get it but not strong enough that you're forced to have it in your build (or even then that's 1 less slot for adaptivity). It feels like a penalty either way.

Best to do away with it IMO

There's the warden's mail effect also. That feels ok because there's almost always a need for one of those armor items anyway. Maybe we can put some of that power back in the attack speed slow.

Because everything that can be use by the pro in LCS top tank are always going to get nerf, Maokai got nerf Shen got nerf and now it will be Nautilus turn next patch. The all have under 50% win rate to let Rito know but they never consider 95% of the player base statistic. If it's played in LCS then chances are it will be nerf, some one must message the balance team that PRO players play LoL differently from 95% of the players.

I do like the majority of the item changes/ new items but a few of them have me very concerned with this being one of them, given it is losing 75 hp, less slow duration on active but slightly increased slow + the loss of critical strike reduction and this item will never be gold efficient even after the price drop, and even if it was there are other items that will be far more useful to build so if these are the final changes i can see randuins disappearing as a built item in favor of other more useful ones.

JRobin311 votes

idk, Maybe they plan to remove crit from the game? your guess is as good as mine

Spoofghoul1 votes

i could live with the crit removal is the as slow was buffed

i dont really like the passive change, it was for me the best reason to build it since a 4 second slow is pretty dope but 2 seconds is not so much even though it slows more the 35% was enough to do the job in most cases so that 55% wont really help much beyond that anyway

i guess ill build the item even less now

MysteriousBootie1 votes

ye cuz as we all know adcs just 100-0 tanks 1v1 hehe xd
