I'm disappointed- No, FURIOUS, at these Lunar Even bundles

Forhonor321··71 votes·7,476 views

Here's the thing: Everything in the Lunar Event is practically behind a bundle wall or pay X amount of money to obtain everything you want. Seriously, look at it.

  • Puppy Warwick Icon locked behind bundle for 1250 with Gemstone. Basically pay 1000 extra RP for the icon and get one free gemstone. Worthless to anyone who already has multiple gemstones and all the gem skins or doesn't want any gem skins.

  • Puppy Nasus Icon locked behind bundle for golden token for gold chroma if you want for 540. Easy outlet to gather one of those chromas and the icon for their combined prices (except if you just want the icon)

  • Puppy Nasus/Warwick Wards behind bundle exclusively for extra orbs and tokens. Granted, doing the math, it does save you money (640 ward, 750 (revel orb & 4 tokens 250 x3), 290 for golden chroma token from before = 1680 for price of 1500) but still if you don't want the bundle, you shouldn't be forced to buy it if you just want the ward.

And now lets get into something a bit more contriversal: the loading borders and new Lunar chromas:

  • Loading borders either are 64 tokens, so only one if you go through the missions and don't want to save for gold chroma, or an extra 425 if you buy the base bundle, which they're only available in!. WHY!?!?! Didn't we already have this issue in the last Star Guardian event about buying the loading borders and through bundles? Did Riot seriously not learn from that? We got all three loading borders from last PROJECT event, why not make it the same here?

  • Red chroma for skins exclusive through bundle + extra 425 for loading border as before if you want to grab all of that together. Why make one particular chroma only exclusive through a god damn bundle but only for a limited time? Why start implementing this rule of marketing now? What is this, SMITE?

And once again, you can only gain 96 total from all the mission in this, so you can only get one loading border or chroma from token technically for free. So it all comes down to:

  • Want rest of chromas, buy orbs + bundles to get them and either use regular tokens to upgrade to golden or get lucking in the orbs.
  • Want rest of loading borders, buy orbs and/or bundles to get them.

While we're at it, let's look over the prices of these bundles and whatnot with the calculator of nearest pricing:

  • Puppy Ward bundles (1500 RP = $10.71, $21.42 for both)
  • Nasus Puppy Icon (540 RP = $4.15)
  • Warwick Puppy Icon (1250 RP = $9.06)
  • Legendary Loot Bundle (5500 RP = $38.19)
  • Base Lunar Bundles with Skin and Border (1775 RP = $12.68, $38.04 for all three)
  • Year of the Dog Bundle (4686 RP = $32.80)
  • Chroma bundles w/o loading border ( 2225 RP (Nasus & WW) = $15.89, $31.78 for both, 2420 RP (Lux) = $17.29, $49.07 total)
  • Chroma bundles with loading border ( 2650 RP (Nasus & WW) = $18.93, $37.85 for both, 2845 RP (Lux) = $19.91, $57.77 total)

So if we wanted to get the new Lux, Nasus and WW skins (which we will count as already having the champs) with borders (while saving tokens we gain from missions for one gold chroma) and also want all the other chromas, we would roughly need to buy 8145 RP, which as calculated is roughly around $57.77 dollars, or buy the year of the dog bundle at 4686 ($32.80) and then buy all the regular chromas, which would roughly be around 2830 RP or $19.81 for a grand total of $52.61 (might be a bit wrong in my math so don't come beating my head around saying I was wrong in prices).

**But that's just if we're wanting the new skins, borders and chromas with them. **If we also want the icons, or wards, we need to drop another $34.63 worth of RP on top of the $52.61. And if you want the other gold chromas, well then I'm going to wish you luck on that because the orbs will more than likely drop random amounts or random chances of gold tokens and who knows what the statistics of those are.

I'm severely disappointed in Riot. I am. I thought that they learned their lesson of having borders being bought rather than gaining them for free and keep them out of bundles only. I thought they learned this with the last PROJECT event. And worst off, with how the game is right now, being nearly un-enjoyable to play for many/most, them being greedy with this event is really put more of a dent of my respect for them even more now. I'm almost ashamed to be hanging on to this game if they're going to try this while the game is at (arguably) the worst it's been now.

And I really don't want to spend money to them to continue supporting this kind of marketing behavior, whether or not the game is in a terrible state.

or you could just, I don't know, not buy literally everything that comes out? especially if you say you don't want to support the game. it's fine, you don't need to the game is free. just don't buy every skin or border or useless icon or that extra gemstone. also, what if the point of the borders so that you only pick one? it's the same deal with the golden chromas. having only one makes it more special, picking either your favorite champ, or just skin. you're completely overreacting, and also acting like a baby.

There is always someone who brings this argument up, and they never realize how ridiculous it is. This isn't about wanting to own "everything". This is about wanting to own a particular something, but being forced into buying useless crap if you want to have said something. This is about just wanting the option to buy a specific item. I for example really just want the wards and the Puppy Warwick Icon. But I am not going to pay 2.5-5x the regular price just because a buttload of junk is included in the bundle. What does this have to do with feeling the need to own everything? I couldn't care less about the champion skins, champion icons, borders and all the other crap. I don't even want the free stuff. What I want is very simple.

Riot certainly has the right to continue with these greedy business strategies, no one is going to stop them. But at the same time it is well within our rights to voice our opinion when we disagree with their decisions. There is really no reason to kiss Riot's behind and pretend like this kind of stuff is cool.

If you don't like people complaining about it, just don't visit such topics.

And your argument is also pointless. A chocolate company offers you a box of chocolates (a product) that has a variety of flavors in it and you just want either 1 piece of chocolate from the said box or a specific variety of chocolates with your type of flavor. So now it's the company's fault that you can't fish out every sprinkled nut and rum combination chocolate ball from every box of 30 pieces and make your own box out of it?

Do you see how ridiculous this sounds? The whole bundles are a package for this year's Lunar Event. So you can't buy this stuff outside it and it's Legacy content until the next year. And you can't buy individual things either but for your effort, gems are also included in these bundles BECAUSE EVERY PLAYER HAS ALREADY COMPLAINED ABOUT WANTING MORE GEMS SO HERE THEY ARE.

Dafuq? Because there is difference between organizing chocolate you have to produce for each packet and creating a digital skin (you know If they'd make package of 5 pieces of the same skin they just copy-paste the data, they do not manufacture anything extra) and not putting it into one bundle in the database.

If you have package of 10 pieces of 5 flavours (2 per flavour) and 5 packages of 10 pieces of same flavour (10 per flavour in each package), it's much more difficult to organize than creating 3 champ skins and 2 ward skins as digital content and distributing them by programming a button to send transaction which substracts certain amount of RP and unlocks the one specific item.

Also there is difference between physical packagae distribution and digital data distribution.

The comparsion is simply totally irrelevant.

Oleandervine3 votes

It's not irrelevant because a company is still making a choice about how it wants to present products to it's consumers. The chocolate company chooses to sell it's flavors as a set, just in the same way that Riot chooses to sell its ART in a set. Riot is manufacturing something (art, programming, digital content) and then choosing how to sell it. Art is not free, as a lot of people seem to forget, and maybe they wanted to have their content have a bit more exclusivity this year. And do remember, you are the consumer in this scenario, and they are the company. If you want a particular product (especially one that's limited edition) you need to buy in the way that it's available. You do not have the luxury nor do you have the jurisdiction to determine how Riot should be selling their products to their consumers. This scenario is no different than any other scenario over the years where people choose to buy crazy things just for one specific collector's item. Get over it, it's been how exclusive merchandise works for decades, and I see no reason why you're raking Riot over the coals for the exact same thing.

Do remember, the content you're complaining about is purely aesthetic content, not relevant to playing the game. ALL of this content is for Riot to make money on, and they can choose how to do it.

MuffledGarbage2 votes

Riot wants to make money, right?

If customers aren't happy with the product they usually complain to the company, right?

If the company doesn't change with the way customers wanted those customers are going to want other products in the same industry, right?

Oleandervine5 votes

Not necessarily. You seem to think that customers hold companies by the balls, and that every little tug they make will force the company to bend a knee. You are completely wrong there. Contrary to the backwards way retail may have people thinking, the customer is not always right. Or at the very least, the loud customers aren't always right.

You may not like it, and a lot of people on the boards might not like it. That's what, 40 people tops? Riot has thousands of players, if not tens of thousands. They run statistics after their events and things to figure out what sells and what doesn't sell - that's how businesses operate. If they've learned that from the past 3 events that solo ward skins don't sell as well as ward skins in a bundle with other things, what does that tell them as a company? It tells them that they will make MORE money if they bundle ward skins, because their data is telling them that people are willing to spend more money on a bundle than they are to spend a little money on a single item. So even if you, or this very loud collective are screaming that "RIOT IS GREEDY! RIOT DOESN'T SELL ME WHAT I WANT HOW I WANT IT!," their data might show a completely contrary story, and there will probably be people who might not want to buy a ward skin by itself as compared to buying it in a bundle (you'll have to spend at least $10 to buy a ward skin since it's over the $5 RP quantity, but the marketing caveat there is that you could probably be willing to spend that entire $10 on a bundle with the ward skin if it landed you extra stuff at a deal since you're having to spend $10 anyway). Your views as a consumer are just that - as A consumer, and not as the buying population of League of Legends as a whole. They have the data they need to determine how their products will sell better, and sometimes it might not appeal to everyone, but will probably appeal to more people in general.

Mast0r Beith17 votes

Dont forget that youre not forced to buy any of these since all of this is only cosmetic. Rito somehow has to make money with League and skins are a player friendly way to do so, even if certain skins are behind a paywal. And not to forget you can do so much more without money then you could have done some years ago since there are now crates and stuff you can get champs, skins, emotes etc. from.

Got my Pulsfire Ez that way, so i think its kind of unfair to blame rito for that

Btw. first post here so, Hi :D

LightIsMyPath29 votes

I am not FORCED to buy cosmetic, I WANT to buy cosmetics. But I won't pay for things that I DON'T WANT to buy. If I go to buy a pair of earrings and the shop pretends I pay for earrings, necklace, ring and bracelet to get them I won't. This market model is suicidal in the intent of having a customers base that trust you. I wanted the red chroma for lux: I won't pay to get every other chroma. In fact I probably won't pay at all since I don't like that much the base color of the skin. I intended to insta-buy a skin+chroma, I probably won't buy anything due to their selling proposal.

Placentas1 votes

But you can still buy base Lunar Lux for 1350 and then a chroma for 290.

Forhonor3219 votes

* A* chroma but not the red chroma that LIMP mentioned though. That's what we're trying to say! In order to get the red chroma or puppy nasus/WW icon or ward, you effectively need to buy the bundle to get them, because that's the only way Riot is allowing people to get them.

If people just want the red chroma but need to buy a bundle of all the other chromas to get it, it turns many away as those are things that people are not wanting to buy. Same goes for the icons and wards and even loading boarders if you don't want to craft them.

Placentas1 votes

So then move 10 dollars away from something else you regularly purchase but don't need during the week towards the red chroma if a person wants it THAT badly.

From my observation, many teens and young adults will willingly spend their money on silly stuff like overpriced soda bottles from vending machines, alcohol, junk food, Starbucks etc without second thought. I save so much money compared to my friends when we go out because I don't drink. Meanwhile they will spend 20-50$ on drinks alone.

Then when it comes to something they supposedly "really want" they don't have the money for it.

I didn't particularly want the chroma pack other than the red myself, but I generally don't waste my money so it was in my funds to get it to waste on. I'm by no means rich either.

It is a little skeezy they're forcing the bundles but at the end of the day it's a business, it exists to make money and profit. You can be upset with that all you want but it doesn't change the fact.

LightIsMyPath9 votes

I don't lack money to buy 20 euros rp for getting the bundle. I simply don't want the bundle. Is that difficult to understand? I want 2 items, why on earth should I pay 6 items to get 2? It's a lose-lose situation: I can't buy what I want, on the other side they are not selling something they would have sold otherway. If they said "it's exclusive so its price is 5x the price of a normal chroma", then people would have simply valued if it was worth for them to pay so much or not (basically only collectors would have bought it). "Want one? you have to buy all! but hey, it's 14% discount on all these faboulous chromas you don't give 2 shits about" it's just fucking with customers. It's a marketing model that relies on the fact that people would buy more stuff on the illusion they pay less due to the discount and be happy about it cause they payed less (but in the end bought a bunch of useless junk). Except traditionally this model is accompanied by the traditional one of "buy 1 pay 1 at normal price", which they removed.. because apparently if one isn't fished by that bullshit tactic he isn't part of their intended customers base

Placentas1 votes

Tbh didn't even read most of the mess of what you just wrote. Learn to paragraph.

But at the end of the day it's the companies decision. You either find it worth it or not. Complaining like a self-entitled child like the rest of these board members isn't gonna change that.

As I said either make the funds for it if it's worth it or don't.

It doesn;t matter if you dont want the bundle when that's the option given. Like damn.

I would hope people like you would get this angry over actual important shit when it comes to the economy and corporations but nah.

1- here's your paragraph:

I don't lack money to buy 20 euros rp for getting the bundle.

I simply don't want the bundle.

Is that difficult to understand?

I want 2 items, why on earth should I pay 6 items to get 2?

I hope it's divided enough for you to read it now.

2- Feedback is not "a self-entitled child complaining" for marketing companies. They often even pay people to collect feedback to improve and make their gains better. They invest resources to make surveys about their products, their selling proposals and sometimes even their staff. They pay people to gather datas and analyze them in relation to what they released and how.

3- The bundle is the option given and I won't get it not because the products weren't worth buying but because the selling propose was shit. This is an important thing to know for a company because it lets it know what needs to be changed in case of lower income then they expected or what they don't need to change if the income is high enough even through negative feedback.

4- I am not angry at all, just giving negative feedback about a poor handled product. I can't see how this could be related to world's economy problems in a videogame forum (if this is what you were referring to). In my country more then 50 % of young people can't find a stable job and when they do their salaries are so low they can't afford to leave parents' homes in most cases.. should I complain with Riot Games about it?

Placentas1 votes

Your feedback is whiny and adolescent, it isn't feedback it's whining. How about be constructive?

Okay so it seems your country has some serious economic problems yet you're complaining about not getting a completely optional red chroma...lol. Like does that scale not display how silly it is that you are indeed upset about this; otherwise you wouldn't be complaining about it in such a manner.

It's neither whiny nor adolescent. It's precise and concise, and even shows that I'm not an idiot being fished by mass-milking strategies because I more or less know what they aim at. "let items be purchased 1 by 1 if you want me to buy them" seems constructive to me: it indicates EXACTLY what needs to be improved and how.

Okay so it seems your country has some serious economic problems yet you're complaining about not getting a completely optional red chroma...lol. Like does that scale not display how silly it is that you are indeed upset about this; otherwise you wouldn't be complaining about it in such a manner.

I don't know if you don't realize it but I'm giving you a shocking revelation: this is LEAGUE OF LEGENDS BOARDS. What you pretend to see in a videogame forum, essays against globalization? Should I ask Meddler to come in my country and replace the shit government we have? LoL. Your reasoning is completely out of context, it's like going in an Apple store assistance point and telling the people complaining that their Iphone is not working that they are all idiots because they may have health problem and they are complaining about the Iphone. That may be the reason you are downvoted (because I didn't dowvote you :p).

Either way you're the one upsetty spaghetti, not me.

I honestly don't know what this mean, I'm curious now. "Angry spaghetti" is a really good and spicy 1st dish in my country.

Down vote all you want, I got the sweet red chroma and you don't.

I didn't downvote you. I tend to read this with the tone of a 3 years old child half singing it " Iii-got-the-red-chroma---and you--dooooont" and I really really hope it isn't the case because that alone would completely shut you down from a conversation ahaha.

Anyway if you got it because you casually happened to like all the items contained into the bundle I'm happy for you, I would have gotten it too if I didn't hate green (present in literally all the skin versions except the red one lol). If you got it because you paid the full bundle only to get 1 item you are one of the reason the milking strategy is allowed but hey, if it's fine for you if you haven't problems with it. You will keep paying more and more for single items you like and I will buy less and less stuff. You will get what you want and I will save money, both fine in the end.

You are complaining about something collectors (in the physical world) have managed and dealt with for DECADES. If you wanted a special Frankeberry Plushie from General Mills Cereals, you had to buy 5 boxes of Frankeberry, cut out the UPCs, mail em in with the purchase form, and then get your plushie in the mail. And that's just simple kid stuff from the 90s. There was a lot more complicated things you had to buy if you wanted other collectors items, or places you had to go, or kits and special bundles you had to buy (and that persists today - Comic Con exclusives and whatnot), so I don't particularly see the big deal here or why you're asking Riot to be flogged in the streets for something that is a norm in the collector's marketplace.

Thats exactly the problem that I had with the snowdown items. I really wanted the cute penguin- and poro-icon, but they had to be fused together with that super expensive gemstone that I really dont need. Now I cry a bit every time I see someone with one of them... (And RIOT should also cry a tiny bit, because they totaly missed out on the money I would have payed for these icons, if they hadnt tryed to trick me into buying more than I want to!)

And now they try to do the same thing with the cute puppy icons? Shame on you RIOT! Playing like that with my heart isnt nice! [sg-janna]

You are aware that the game is free? And that skins are what keep it going?

Skins, wards, icons and all the other stuff have a base price that reflects their actual value (e.g. time it took to make). These prices are fine and we'd have no problem buying said content at the designated price.

However the problem arises when this content is locked into bundles with useless junk that no-one would otherwise buy. It is an attempt to get people to spend more money than they actually would. It reflects pure greed, because it is no longer about "keeping the game going" but core capitalism: making more money than you know what to do with. There was a recent article (I believe it was circulating on reddit) that showed LoL is the highest grossing F2P game worldwide. The present issue has absolutely nothing to do with keeping the game going, because the game is doing more than fine.

But sure, if you want to play this card. Yes the game is free, and its exactly that that screws over the paying players. The players that actually keep this game going. Because they will continously have to pay more if they want the same content.

Crimsonkapa10 votes

Accounting major here. First of all everyone brings this up on the boards as a counter argument and it's a total non-sequitur; just because League is the highest grossing F2P game in the world, you have NO IDEA about actual net profits/expenses/growth curves from that stat. None. Zip. Zero. They could be losing money because they want to pay their employees an above market wage, or ISP's could be shafting them driving up their overhead. Don't make assumptions about Riots finances that we can't know, especially when it really is a FREE game at heart and a company by definition exists to make money. That's life.

You make it sound like you would rather pay a subscription for Lol instead because somehow bundling cosmetics "screws over" the players. This, in my opinion, is nuts.

Late For Tea5 votes

You are right, I have absolutely no idea about Riot's expenditure, so all I do is making assumptions based on the information I have. Considering Riot would never release such information, it is the best I can do. But how is saying "they need the money to keep the game going" any different? It is also just an assumption. Another assumption incoming: Digital Extreme also develops a F2P game called Warframe. Compared to LoL, ALL of their content can actually be obtained for free in a fairly reasonable way. On top of that they produce a buttload more content than Riot does, while likely making less money. And they are still doing fine. (No need to bring up the story about having to maximize profit because of shareholders, I've heard it all before).

You make think my opinion is nuts, but it certainly has some merit. Lets say that previously I could get the skins I wanted for $15 a month. But now that Riot can no longer support the game with all these F2P players, they are putting everything behind a paywall to make more money. Now I have to pay $30 a month to get the skins I wanted, because I'd have to buy useless junk as well. So yes, the paid players would be "screwed over" because of these F2P players. Do I actually want to suggest a subscription? No, I am fine with F2P players. All I just want is for Riot to get rid of these paywalls and let me buy the stuff I want. But everytime the F2P players (disclaimer: not specifically refering to you) grab their pitchforks and moan that we have no right to complain, while they themselves actually do very little to support the game.

Crimsonkapa2 votes

You're comparing apples to oranges, the playerbase size and company size difference between Riot and Digital Extreme is massive and shouldn't be compared if you're looking at expenses. And I actually play warframe so I can tell you that they do bundle stuff as well and it's probably what makes them the most money.

Second, its pure hyperbole to say "everything" is being put behind a paywall because it really isn't, a single chroma or a single icon is hardly everything Riot creates. Real paywalls are like how HOTS uses their bundle loot boxes as the ONLY way to get skins/announcers/banners. Heck, up till 2 years ago League had no where near this much content (icons, chromed, ward skins, even regular skins) being made on a regular basis, and it wasn't possible to get ANY for free, up until hextech chests.

Just so you know I'm not you're average complaining F2P player, I'm a whale who's spent over $1000 on this game, I am very much a paying player.

My point is that you can say you personally don't like the "paywalls", but saying something like "Riot is greedy" or "they make plenty of profit" is pure fallacy that cannot be supported by any logical argument, we just don't know enough. Until DontHassleDaHoff comes in this thread and says otherways anyways.

I don't think you need to be an accounting major to understand business 101. We all know companies have overhead costs. Riot is still the most profitable game in the world.

I want to some things I'm seeing in this thread and (IMO) why OP's criticisms of the way Riot is selling these skins is valid:

Point: "You don't have to spend money, it's cosmetic."

Counterpoint: Despite this, OP could very well want to get some of these things and give Riot money. This isn't abount "don't spend money if you don't want it" but rather "you should accept whatever deal you're given." In addition, Riot has made much of these things exclusive and time-based. While the skins will come back, there's no telling if the chroma or the icons will come back. OP might be backed into a corner and forced to get something he'd want now, even if it's in a deal he doesn't want, because nobody knows if he can get it at a later date.

Point: "Just don't buy everything you see."

Counterpoint: Certain things come in certain bundles. This means that even if he just wants two icons he has to spend far more than he would just to get all of them. Same goes for the exclusive chromas: If he wants the red one, he has to buy the specific bundle. This is again not an argument about wanting to get everything with a bundle but rather wanting to get a specific thing but having to buy the bundle.

Point: "Riot is a company and has to make sales."

Counterpoint: They can do so in a more consumer-friendly way. While I think they're both scummy, there's a huge difference between Overwatch loot boxes and Battlefront 2's loot boxes which color peoples opinions on them. Plus, despite the mission system, OP has to sink money in. You can love League and even Riot but hitting a paywall is never fun.

All that said, I'm in somewhat agreement with OP. While I get that Riot wants to make/offer exclusive content with bundles, it's something Riot should let players customize to a degree. It would encourage more sales and you never feel like you're getting stuff you don't want, as you can tweak and purchase content in a way that fits your desires. Sorry you can't get everything you want though, I know that feeling of the grind.

I decided these events were bullshit when I bought a bundle in the Worlds event only for them to immediately make everything I bought worthless by nerfing the orange essence rate. I'm not surprised this one is even worse.

Edited out an offensive comment. Let's keep it respectful and only have friendly debates here.

No but when you go to Wal-Mart and buy something, you are getting that particular item. This is not the case, you are getting a ton of "additional stuff" you don't want but have to pay for.

Exactly what I'm saying. I don't want to buy something if it either means I get a whole bunch of other stuff that I don't care about with it or the only way to get said item is buying some bundle with a bunch of stuff I don't care about. I just want the one damn item alone!

"OK well if you want to buy that gallon of water you also have to buy 2 loaves of bread, 6 cartons of eggs, a new flat screen TV, and 2 gallons of milk."

If you don't want that water, just don't buy it.

This is worse than the Star Guardian event, and that was already greedy enough. :/

I'm mostly just upset about the puppy warwick icon. It's SO CUTE but I can't justify spending 1250 RP on an icon when I have no desire for the added gemstone that's boosting its price up. I didn't mind paying 520 for the Nasus icon or for the ward bundles and I don't really care about anything else. But whyyyyyyy 1250 for an icon and gemstone!? I'm so sad!!!! [sg-janna]

Would have been much happier if they gave me a few revel orbs with it instead. At least then I have a chance for a grab bag which I DID happen to get in an orb from the ward bundle I bought.
