Tips for Karthus from a D5 Karthus main

I am not a Diamond Player, but a while ago I visited the League Subreddit and came across thread from a Mastery 7 Karthus main (Silver 4 I think?) and a D5 Karthus came and gave some tips on how to get better playing Karthus. I figured I'd try to summarize what he said and post it here for everyone else who'd like to play Karthus. (I'd do direct quotes, but for some reason the Quote block isn't working at points atm :/ )

Here's the Source if you want the unsummarized version

  1. Dying as Karthus is fine as long as you have good positioning.

  2. Don't build more than 1 defensive item on Karthus. You need the Damage

  3. Void staff is important on Karthus

  4. Get CDR on Karthus

  5. Try not to push too far without Vision

  6. Coordinate your ult with other lanes to help them transition better into mid/Late Game

  7. Try not to far with Q early game if you can. Save the mana for Zoning/Harassing the opponent. Don't make it too much a priority though

  8. Pulse E to kill Minions if you can't Q or auto in time (Quickly turn on and off the E)

  9. It's not super important to get boots on Karthus, but get them if you need to help avoid damage. Sell late game for more damage

One thing he did say about starting build on Karthus:

I usually start Doran's ring, it allows you to get so much mana back from killing creeps with it's passive + your E passive. The extra health also helps vs a lot of champs that want to burst you down (which is a lot of the current meta mid-champs). I do sometimes go Corrupting potion as a starting item, if the enemy can outrange with poke (Xerath, Varus, Brand...), to sustain through all the harass in lane.

I don't like starting Dark Seal personally, but it is honestly fine as an opener. You don't really need the mana regen that you'd get from Doran's or using Corrupting Potion since you have E passive, as long as you can last-hit decently well with auto's. The biggest reason I don't like starting Dark Seal is because I don't think Mejai's is an ideal item on Karthus. Of course it's not bad, as you can stack up a lot off free AP off ulting for kills/assists. But, sometimes in the mid-late game 5v5 teamfights, the best thing you can do to win the teamfight can be to jump right in the middle of the whole thing and just suicide while cranking out crazy DPS - which is pretty counter intuitive for Mejai's. Also, you are pretty prone to getting picked and dying since you have no mobility outside of Summoner Spells.

Small point I wanted to bring up about biscuits: they are good if you need the small extra health/mana that buscuits give over regular potions - but, if the enemy mid laner is a champ that doesn't have a crazy amount of kill pressure in lane, I like to greed and take Assassin over biscuits in the mastery tree. Karthus certainly isn't an assassin, but a lot of the time you are ulting, you are not near any of your teammates, so you get the extra 2% damage buff that Assassin gives (which is a decent chunk of extra damage since your ult does so much).

Too bad every teammate I've had complains that we are loosing because I have no boots

Another M7 karth. I heavily concur about nobootsing karthus. It's just not necessary with a rylai's and W slow. My one contribution to suggest would be scaling CDR runes (20%).

I find the CDR from runes frees me up to build -- Tear, ROA, right into Rylais. This lets me have rylais right at the start of the midgame transition in about 80% of matches. When you ignore boots, the rylais becomes core to bring the fight back down to your movement speed. I refuse to teamfight until I have the rylais and will farm a sidelane if necessary to get it.

Microwise in teamfights I play karthus like you would a tanky frontline initiatior - similar to maokai, sion, or zac.

Macrowise I play him as around TP and ult as a duelist split pusher that farms everything - Similar to trynd. (In the duel itself, the playstyle is probably most similar to blue build ez)

Hm odd cuz most karthus players that are high elo generally script. Confirmed scripters if xerath is the second most played champ

Fellow karthus players , can I get your opinion on this : I play karthus in 2 different play styles depending on my teams needs and the enemy team comp:

If enemy team has a heavy tank presence , I'll play like a squishy single target dps mage with emphasis on high ap,mana , magic pen, and capping cdr, while sacrificing tankiness and Aoe power, staying back and avoiding death. (Rylais, archangels staff, morello, void staff, death cap, ludens Echo)

If the enemy team is mostly squishy champions I will heroically charge in with my e turned on and try and stay in the midst of the battle to do as much Aoe as possible before I eventually die and Pop my ulti. This build Mostly consists of rylais, liandrys, deathcap, RoA , abyssal and zhonias

What do you think ?

For tanks I usually go a build something like item 3027 item 3116 item 3151 item 3135 item 3040 item 3165 so still pretty tanky and kites really well, I don't really buy luden's on him though. He doesn't need that much movement speed, because 1: It's okay if he dies as long as it's not like out in the open. You have Rylai's with E/Q and your wall to peel for yourself anyway. 2: He doesn't need to catch up to anyone, because he can ult to kill them if they escape and also has again, his wall and rylai's to keep them slowed. He also doesn't really use the waveclear passive that well.

If they're squishy then don't get a liandry's and go full damage. Enjoy killing everyone in 2-3 hits of a Q. Abyssal might be nice on him, but I'm not a fan of Zhonya's. Still prefer to go straight damage on him to get to the point where you can kill any squishy target with your ult that isn't above 60% health. Your teamfighting idea is basically what karthus does though.

S4 M7 Karthus player here (not the person that OP was talking about). I recently got M7 about two days ago, and people were always complaining about me getting items like Abyssal Sceptor instead of Rod of Ages.

My standard build looks like this: item 3157 item 3285 item 3089 item 3116 item 3001 item 3003

I usually carry my games and I have been having a positive experience climbing up to Gold as Karthus. Do you guys go other builds? I have seen Tanky Karthus guides and wanted to try them out. Does it work?
