Why is there no ad version of zhonya?

What they mean to say is that the game would experience balancing issues if they implemented an AD Zhonya's due to the existence of Mercurial Scimitar. If there existed and AD Zhonya's it would make an OP combo with Merc due to both items abilities. That said, the only way they could implement the AD Zhonya's would be to either make it so you can only benefit from one item or the other OR completely remove Mercurial Scimitar from the game. There is a potential 3rd way though which would be to nerf Merc and also at the same time make the AD Zhonya's a much weaker version of the current AP Zhonya's. I'm sure that none of us would want that 3rd option though as it would almost make it so you need to get BOTH of them in order to have a worth while effect; which is obviously not optimal for game balance.

I do agree that it would be nice to have an AD version of Zhonya's though since ADC's tend to be quite vulnerable to assassin's and other high burst champions, especially in solo Q where you can't really rely on your team to peel for and protect you. Since this isn't an item that exists though perhaps it would do well to wait until your team is closer to you before you engage onto the enemy team; that way you hopefully won't need the Zhonya's effect in order to achieve your goal, hopefully being the key word here obviously. lol

Because AD champs already have a lot of options for building tanky whilst still doing damage

The answer is because QSS/merc, but I mean you can buy zhonyas despite being ad based. I've occasionally seen adcs and other non-AP champs buy zhonyas in place of a more typical defensive item (e.g. banshees/GA), so if you're keen to be golden, you can.
