You're serious or just trolling? Zed with ghostblade active, W and R can cover up to 2k yards very quickly, allowing him to jump on his mark and instantly return to where he started. You can't cleanse his R/Draktharr, only thing you can do is to use Zhonyas, but you need to have this item first. Also, its cooldown is higher than Zed's. Also, Zed is very resistant to ganks/dives thanks to his ridiculous mobility. He can build Mercurial Scimitar and Maw to hardcounter any mage. He's energy-based, so he can spam his sht all day.

Meanwhile Anivia has 850 Q/600 R range, which is average for a mid-lane mage. Q is slowly moving skill shot, so very avoidable unless used point-blank. She's VERY mana hungry and has no escape/mobility mechanic, besides her passive which helps only if she dies under the turret or in 1v2 situation. She can't rush any defensive items (unlike Zed), as she has to get her mana first(tear/ROA?)

And while RE combo is instant and hits fairly high, its damage is comparable to ADC's AA. It has similar range (600) and hits for 510+1.25 AP, whereas ADC's crit hits for AD*2.5. Fully built Anivia has like 700-ish AP, which means 1385 damage every 3 seconds (461 DPS), ADC has like ~300 AD and 1.5 AS which means 1125 DPS. So ADC can put up like three times as much damage per second than Anivia. Anivia offsets this by having loads of CC and utility, but again, her damage isn't the reason why is she picked. Same as Taliyah tbh.

Zed can be destroyed by the entire team if he jumps into you, his ulti can be prevented by 80% of the supports/semi-supports Anivia with 800 AP (if she builds tear) deals 1150 damage (without counting R+E) from far away, being able to disengage with wall/Q and come back later. Her ulti also slows as/ms making the counter strike hard.

there is a reason that the win rate of zed and anivia are SO FAR different.

Verdade5 votes

She's immobile mage with extremely limited defensive options. She has to have damage and utility, otherwise she would just plain suck. And it's quite shocker that MAGE (who is supposed to shine in teamfights) is better at teamfighting than Assassin (who's job is to take down one champion).

Anivia's damage is not and never was problem. If anything, gut her hidden power (double-hitting with Q, increase base damage but remove damage on second hit)

Ratbert4 votes

It's fairly obvious that her q hits twice (or maybe just to me, cause every time riot says "hidden power" it's pretty overt to me) and nerfing her q more would make it possibly the worst skillshot in the game. Power should come out of her e and shoved into her other basic skills.

RocketRelm8 votes

To be fair though, give any champion 6 items and you can make them sound OP. The 2-item numbers are way more important than the 6-item numbers.

Xeruon17 votes

All right, let's get into this.

You're serious or just trolling?

Semi-Trolling. I used a lot of hyperbole in my post, however I do still have a point here.

You can't cleanse his R/Draktharr

I'll agree with you here, the nerf to Scimitar was unnecessary.

Also, Zed is very resistant to ganks/dives thanks to his ridiculous mobility. He's energy-based, so he can spam his sht all day.

Lumping those together because they tie into my point very well. Yes, Zed is energy based, and is mobile. However, not only does he need to choose between mobility or a poke combo, missing his poke combo is also very punishing, since he can't:

  • Escape (As stated before)
  • Waveclear efficiently
  • Win melee trades

Calling if a Zed used his W to poke/waveclear to your jungler is something not a lot of people do, but probably the best thing you can do to fuck his day (Beside Zhonya's.) For the entirety of laning phase, there's a 22s (Without CDR) time window for your jungler to gank and ruin his day, on top of your being able to freely harass him. Mid-late game mana becomes obsolete, but energy is like a glorified ammo system that has to be managed throughout the entire game.

Meanwhile Anivia has 850 Q/600 R range, which is average for a mid-lane mage. Q is slowly moving skill shot, so very avoidable unless used point-blank.

You missed the entire point of discussion here. Her Q is not a problem.

She's VERY mana hungry and has no escape/mobility mechanic, besides her passive which helps only if she dies under the turret or in 1v2 situation.

Her Mana is only an issue in the early game. Even if she falls behind, once she hits six, she can just endlessly clear waves with R assuming she has at least one Mana item. Anivia's late game is much better than Zed's, and she is also one of the champions who can easily stall the game out until then by simply deleting enemy waves with R. Her Passive also allows her to play a bit more recklessly vs Zed, as she can afford to overstep a little to win trades in the early game vs him. A good Anivia player also won't let her egg be popped before level six.

And to correct you: Anivia Egg is useless in 1v2 siturations unless you go egg under turret/close to your team, as you're immobile and can't cast any spells.

She can't rush any defensive items (unlike Zed), as she has to get her mana first(tear/ROA?)

RoA serves a good defensive purpose, too. As it gives her more health and allows her to use her R more, same with tear. If a Zed is rushing Maw, that means that he's either stupid or you've forced him out/killed him. Yomuus/Dusblade gives him much higher damage output and more mobility in the case of the former. To top that all off: Tear is very cheap and Catalyst, a component of RoA, gives her health, mana, and resource and HP sustain.

Comparing Anivia to ADCs is like comparing pears to avocados; completely different things.

Anivia is a burst mage with uninteractive waveclear and very good mid-late game teamfighting that can (eventually) delete any squishy with two button clicks, and unlike Zed, she doesn't have to worry about:

  • Teamfight presence falling off a cliff late game
  • Not being able to assassinate the backline without risk
  • Mid-Late Game Resource management

This is the kind of bias I'm talking about. Just because I said something in favor of Zed and not in favor of an immobile mage/support, someone already pops up making a bunch of half thought-out arguments. Great job Boards community, you guys are getting better and better each day. [zombie-brand-clap]

Verdade4 votes

Okay, let me put it differently. If you had to simplify champion's power, you could divide it into 4 categories: Offensive power, Defensive power, Utility and Mobility. Now, if you give every champion the same amount of points (say 20), each champion would have different distribution.

Zed would be like 10/3/1/6 It's very good point distribution for an Assassin, and he does his role well. He doesn't need utility to preform well, and his mobility gives him enough safety to partially negate lack of defences.

Garen is 6/9/1/3 Perfect juggernaut, but he's just a brick. Once he gets behind he sucks because he has little utility (or mobility) he can rely on.

Urgot 6/8/5/1 Badly designed ADC. As ADC he's supposed to dish out damage, not carry with tankiness or utility. He has his niche use but he's always either too weak or too opressive

Now, if you look at certain champions that have been or are popular, you see certain pattern. Their point distrubution is close to 5/5/5/5, so they are often subject to changes/competitive spotlights/QQ. These are Gragas, Ekko, Yasuo, Orianna, Kalista. Champions focused into one of these (Vel'koz with like 15/1/3/1) or two (Braum 3/8/6/3) are considered as much more balanced.

Now take Anivia. She has no mobility and limited defense (3-4 i'd say, and only because of her passive). That means rest of her points are in utility or damage. Does this mean she should be allowed to dish out tons of damage and have enough utility to back it up? Yes it does. Does it fit mage gameplay? Yep. So i don't see problem here. If they were about to nerf her offensive power, she would need pretty big buffs elsewhere. Also remember, her kit is basically unchanged (except for small R change in MYMU) since her release.

Btw.: Do you know what broke the game? Hint: It's not unkillable tanks or damage creep. No. Back in S1-2 there were much sturdier tanks and ADCs/Mages had much more damage. It's Tanks (who are supposed to be defensive/utility oriented) with more damage, assasins (offensive/mobility) with more utility, and finally ADCs (straight up offensive) getting great defensive options. It's funny actually, balanced champion could never be balanced.

The Governer6 votes

The problem with Anivia is not that she can do burst damage. It's the fact that there are no counterplay options dealing with her burst combo unless you stay away from her range and/or build tank.

Ziggs, another burst mage that is good at stalling, at least has a lot of counterplay attached to his kit. He has moderate aa range and his passive isn't his main damage source so he can't insta-burst by using passive alone. His Q is a projectile that you can see from miles away. His W is more of a utility option more than a burst option. His E also has travel delay. His R, albeit having a large radius, is also a delayed projectile that you can see from miles away and act accordingly. Anivia's counterplay can be summed up in one sentence: stay away from her or you get fucked. Does this sound like counterplay to you?

Zed's burst combos are also fast, but at least they are skillshots unlike Anivia. There are still ways to sidestep all of his combos. Yes he can gapclose and can put down squishy targets fairly easily, but there are counterplay options to his combos (sidestepping, buying Zhonyas, etc...), unlike an undodgeable combo like Anivia's ER. Many mages and assassins (such as Aurelion Sol for melee carries, divers and bruisers; Veigar with his R that is pretty much broken) suffer the same issue to some extent but their issues are not nearly as destructive as Anivia.

Mobile assassins aren't what breaks the game (barring tank Ekko, or Ekko in general). Abilities with no counterplay are.

ChaoticPinecone4 votes

I dont see how this is a problem for Anivia's small niche.

You cant compare Ziggs to Anivia. Zigg is more of a poke mage. Sure, he has burst, but its not amazing until you get a ton of items. Secondly, Ziggs has a far larger effective range. In terms of fair gameplay, you dont want a mage who has targeted spells from 1325 range (a range that all 4 of his spells can hit). Its for this reason that Anivia's Q, with its 1250 range, is one of the slowest skillshots in the game and is easily avoided. Its also why Anivia's E has a range of 600.

All mid-low range mages have a lot of instant or targeted burst/damage. Veigar, Annie, Cassiopeia, etc. Their weakness is their effective range - if you fight them at their effective 600 range, youre going to have problems. If you outrange them or can jump on them, they have a lot of weaknesses.

Its funny how you say Anivia's combo has no counterplay or are undodgeable. its 600 range! That seems like counterplay to me. You realize that thats autoattack range for some champions? Its like saying Caitlyn has no counterplay because she can crit you from 650 units away and it cant be dodged. And with 6 items on both champs, Cait can do just as much damage in a small time frame as Anivia can. Is Cait breaking the game?

Verdade2 votes

Exactly this. Annie can do the same as Anivia, but with higher damage and far more reliably, and also stunning you in process.

Then there are some champions that Riot doesn't give the full 20 points to and have other champions do what they do but better in every way. Champions who are in dire need of buffs or changes, 1 sided champions who people QQ because "100 - 0 with no items" and get nerfed yet they have virtually no other tools or tanks that do nothing else but absorb damage and barely better than others who have a host of other tools. 1 mobility tool for a melee should count the same in the power budget as range auto attacks, how else is the melee supposed to get to you otherwise.

Anivia has too high a power budget and is more like at 22 out of 20. She has close to the burst of an assassin yet has range and huge CC and a GA passive as well as massive range wave clear for sieges. Her weak point, her early, is negated by the fact she is range, has egg and once level 6 can just R to stall out the game until she hits her late game.

Seriously, since when is 1.25 AP on COMBO "burst of an assassin"? Since when is 600 range above average? By huge CC you mean slow skillshot with predictable trajectory? You can't stop GA's ressurect, but Anivia's egg is very fragile, it actually takes more damage than Anivia herself... Massive range waveclear - 600 range. Good one. There are champions capable to do that at 1k+ range

Never said above average, the fact that she is range counts as 1 full mobility since melee have to have some kind of tool to gap close or they become like mord. Second, CC doesn't mean just stun. CC = CROWD CONTROL, which includes her WALL and her ULTIMATE which blocks off and zones players or "controls the crowd". Third it doesn't matter if it's a fragile egg or not, it's essentially a type of GA. You blow your combo on her and she eggs, NOW YOU MUST CONTINUE TO take down the egg or she comes back at full HP after you've already blown your load to get her down the first time. This isn't just like a Zac who dives into the front line. This is a back line champion who has multiple zoning tools. It is very strong in a team fight and in lane when she can just tower hug and farm with R. The instant R into E damage is waay too powerful for a point and click on what she has in her kit. She is about zoning and controlling, not about lol my R E combo took half your hp away in lane!! Maybe if E was also a skill shot, sure i'd buy it, but not with a point and click.

I agree that Anivia's RE is stupid and unfair but this is a really poor argument to bring to the table. You've done your absolute best to make Zed's burst combo sound worthless by bringing up and severely exaggerating its limitations while implying through absence in your Anivia descriptiont that there's no limitations on her burst combo at all. There are strengths and weaknesses to both of them, and different measures of counterplay to both of them. If you want to make out that you have to be stupid to let Zed kill you (lol?) then... how does "When I walk right into 650 range of Anivia for no reason, she kills me" sound?

If you want to convince people of your opinion then it's pointless to spout stuff it's so easy to pick up on and disagree with. You're not convincing any people biased in favour of Anivia that she's broken when you present such an obviously unfair argument.

Anyway, Anivia being bullshit doesn't disqualify Zed from being bullshit and Zed being bullshit doesn't make Anivia look better, so it's pointless to compare champions anyway. Zed got nerfed because he was horrible to play against and Anivia has been/is getting nerfed for the same reason.

So as long as you mash both buttons at the same time really fast, you can't possibly fuck it up.

Praetor Notorias1 votes

It's surprisingly easy to cancel spells on Anivia. Super easy to cancel that long ass auto animation. So yeah, you can fuck it up. But if she's able to delete you with an RE, ER, or my personal favorite REQE, then you were too close to start with.

1011001110001 votes

Being surprisingly easy to cancel doesn't make it any less obscene. It's ridiculous to justify Anivia deleting you with an "E+R Combo" when, in all reality, you're getting dicked in the face by one damaging ability because 99% of the time, Anivia didn't use her ult to damage you for shit.

There should be no reason for such high burst potential to be so readily available, and on a targeted ability no less. Literally being a ranged assassin with only half of a kit is what gets champions gutted to unviability.

Not saying it doesn't do to much damage currently, but it does require her getting items. Then once she's got the items, she has to get close enough without dying first. There are a number of mages that have longer range or better mobility and do just as much damage with two keystrokes.

Icestar11861 votes

Won't actually help if I understand correctly. It should only block one tick of the ult, I think. By the time E hits you, you will already have taken damage and been slowed from the second tick.

Garlic Butter1 votes

Well A) her ult doesn't usually pop spell shield B) why standing in her ult, there is no way she could have trapped you with item 3102 as it would block her stun, and you use that brief moment(or play garen and be permanently immune to it basically) when she fails the combo to squash her. Of course you have to bait out the wall or have flash ready to flash over it for the counter play, as she moves a bit away from her zone control she's dead.

Icestar11861 votes

So I don't understand spell shields correctly then?

Garlic Butter1 votes

not all spell shields block all spells (black shield however does block the most, and sivir's the least, however sivir's can block multiple spells for the duration of it being 'proc'd' (an unlimited number of spells striking her within the same moment (such as an all in burst dive), except the ones, that it doesn't block of course) and spell effects. Banshee's veil has unique coding and WILL NOT block aoe from continuous spells (go check the league wikia page which discloses all the things about it if you want to increase your knowledge of champion ability interaction, though be warned it isn't fully updated for reworked champions and some old champions that had their abilities tweaked (nor does it rarely have info about tweaks to champions ON DIFFERENT MAPS though ocassionally it will be mentioned in the modification history section.

It is sad most items, abilities, tooltips, and in game information lacks any kind of clarity about this kind of thing but if you play with an item or champion A LOT (a few 10,000s of mastery points) you will start to see subtle things (many skins have unique in game effects such as small movement speed(5) boosts on preforming certain actions, random massive bonus damage to minions, reduced damage from certain champions or abilities, etc. Meant as fun Easter eggs and small 'lucky' performance boosts, and thematically (more important) make sense, having been in many fights where 1 damage makes all the difference in the world and occasionally also being SUPER EXECUTED by some unknown damage source for massive amounts when brought to extremely low health, but walking away and then suddenly execute damaged(9300 from 'unknown' in the damage read out) by a skin passive that only functions on X map when vs X champion (a certain freljord skin vs a certain anti-champion on ARAM as vague example).

EDIT: Just for some clarity, when I first started playing league some 6 or 7 years ago, one of the first things I did after hitting level 12 or so was read nearly every page on the league wiki, and eventually over time every champion entry and in-depth ability details (background mechanics interactions), though never a substitute for actually playing the champion and learning it, it helped me figure out things like: Ability interaction with items that SHOULD work with the champion but don't (lack of clarity things), sometimes this is intended sometimes its bugged, sometimes its a problem they can't fix but know about so disable functionality against certain ability interactions when they would interact as they might cause game breaking crashes or exploits (why sivir's spell shield does not block all spells or champion abilities, but can block multiple at once, etc), or scarily seemingly broken exploits that are actually intended interactions (Fizz E letting him make champion ults and long cooldowns "miss" but go on cooldown (malz ult, veigar R, etc. though occasionally these will reset. Other interesting things like ult resetting after going off and casting ,but because the client sees you "died" before casting it server side it is immediately refreshed(applies too with ziliean ult and guardians resurrect) (applies to point and click ults and certain abilities)). Over time I also researched every thread I could about a confusion champion or an ability or champion with weird item interaction (KAYLE & old Quinn make my brains ache), though rarely would there be any comments or information or clarity offered anywhere about a weird item idea or interaction (or ability interactions) making it difficult to tell if bug, fluke circumstance causing a weird thing to happen, etc. But over that same time it resulted in me committing rigorous testing of champions (that I own or can free play) to figure out these interactions, some things like the skin and odd map interaction differences I keep to myself or the research circle (friends) as I don't want to 'get cool special in game things busted.' But it's enjoyable to talk about them vaguely and encourage other people to seriously research things on their own (and play with what they love till they master it!)
