What is proper ediquette for who gets the river fruit?

I was recently in a game where I needed some fruit to get my health up. I got it and went about my way but my top laner flipped out and claimed the fruit was for him. I main jungle and always take the fruit but this scenario has never come up. So who is in the right here and who is in the wrong? Or is it something that etiquette has yet to be established for river fruit?

It doesn't matter who takes the fruit as long as you leave one for the scuttler. That's the only etiquette to follow.

As long as you need it. Generally moreso if you need the mana. Top lane cant really use theirs often, unless theyre roaming mid a lot. Support often can use bot one, as they roam up to ward and all.
