Lets talk Varus?

Been playing him a bunch and while decent in my elo (like any champion) he's not really seen much elsewhere. I like to think its because his kit clashes with itself. Lets look..

P = kill things and gain AS. Try to use that AS to stack on someone else.

Q promotes long range poke, full charging, and strong AD and armor pen. Long range and high damage.

  • You want LDR, ghost blade, a bunch of AD, etc

W promotes getting 3 auto attacks as fast as possible on as many people as possible then using Q or E to detonate

  • Basically you want pretty good attack speed and probably a hurricane.

E is basically used to detonate 75% of the time tbh. Yay GW and a slow added in. Medium range/damage.

R you want to hit as many as possible. Champion hit gets 3 stacks so easy detonate after. Best when chained with others cc.

Then to top it off he has average AA range of 575. While this is better than most adc's, if they can close the ~25 range then they can unload some better damage since Varus takes time to get his out whether he's getting stacks then firing Q or E or if he's just going for a full Q. And even longer if he goes for 3AA and a full Q.

Ok so, you want to be at range to maximize your Q which takes time. But first you want to get in range to land 3 autos. But the further you are away the better they can dodge. But if you're to close they can punish you for charging. First contradiction issue.

Next is items. You basically want CDR, AS, AD, Armor Pen, Mana Sustain, Life Sustain. Thats an issue. Oh and did i mention you want it all at almost the same time if you're going to want to utilize all your abilities..

Your basic AS is pretty average. Yea you can boost it with your passive but landing 3 autos quickly in a trade can be hard without help. And if you want the most out of Blight you need those autos and an ability to follow up. You wanna poke with Q? Well you better watch that mana bar. Its not the fastest draining but you can clear it if you're not careful.

My best success has been building item 3142 components and grabbing a item 3070 if I can't get either item 3134 or item 3133 After item 3070 item 3142 you can handle pretty well just launching Q's all day. They can clear a wave in 1-2 shots after an auto or two.

But now to get to my actual point, After all that i came down to "how do i be successful with Varus?" and I landed on "Ok so I just build things that make my Q be my bread, butter, and entire dinner. I use my ER for peel and engage, and barely utilize my P or W because who needs it when i can build item 3142 item 3147 item 3043 item 3812 item 3158 and a situational item like item 3156 item 3026 item 3036 and launch Q's for an ass load of damage at 1600 range? And if I need to do my adc duty of taking down the paper mache turrets i have ghost blade active and can weave in minion kills for my passive to be relevant.

If i had to make a suggestion on the spot? Id say pull some power from his Q to buff his W, E, or make his Q just charge to max faster so you're not inactive for so long using it. His Q hits like a truck but is it worth the rest of his kit falling behind in appeal? I'd like to think Varus would really shine as someone who 3AA, E to proc and slow, 3AA, Q to snipe as they start running or to finish them. Kinda play like Lucian who really weaves those abilities in and wants to keep AA'ing. I feel his current kit prevents him from getting a higher player base and buffs to make him more appealing or able to compete with the top their adc's. He shares the uninteractive and "boring" to watch style as champs like Ziggs who just chill back clearing waves and poking you down.

TL;DR: Varus is stuck between being an AD caster and ADC. As well as stuck between mid range dps and long range poke nukes. He wants to be in range to AA but be far enough away to charge that Q (while being slowed) safely. Which is highly dangerous to be in range of mages/assassins while slowing your self and not putting damage out.

Thats all for now. Feel free to comment, down vote immediately, make thought-out suggestions, tell me I'm wrong and boosted, find grammar mistakes, share Lulu&Varus pics or whatever you like :)

I still think his 'on enemy champ takedown' passive should make his blight stacks auto-pop when they reach three. So he would begin the fight fishing for kills with Q, and once he scores one he goes all living vengeance on people.

So with what your saying is if he say had 3 stack on everyone somehow and got a kill, the rest of the enemies stacks would also pop?
