Hunters Potion is underwhelming.

I noticed that barely anyone buys it. As a matter of fact, I haven't seen this item in a long time. The only spotlight this item got was when preseason hit live and then a week later everyone realized it was bad. The heal is weak that getting a potion back from killing a large monster doesn't make up for it. Wish it wasn't an early gold sink.

it costs too much and takes too long to get for it to be effective.

It's main problem is that refillable pot sucks to the point where the only people who can get it are people who have good first clears and can stand having a massively reduced pot pool by buying it. people who want hunters pot can't get refillable because they get murdered in the jungle.

The only people who can use it are people who don't have trouble clearing anyway, and usually they just stick with refillable because it's more cost effective.

that's such a horrendous waste of gold, effort, and time, it isn't worth it in higher level play.

except it is bad, because hunter's pot isn't cost efficient and refillable is even worse than hunter's pot.

how is it not cost efficient....? it gives 300 hp and 175 mana per back and costs only 250 to upgrade it after you start refilling. also it refills upon killing jungle monsters, a normal clear without buffs will net you hundreds more health as well. a total cost of 400 means same price as 8 potions which is 1200 health. considering you get 2 for starting refilling (250 hp total) and another 9 charges for a standard clear with hunters (540 health + 315 mana a total of 790 health) you are only a single back from breaking even and surpassing it at that point. on top of that it keeps you always healthy for ganks or surprise visits from the enemy jungler for a lot of the rest of the game. oh and it sells for a nice 160 gold when you are done with it so it's even MORE efficient only costing you a long term 240 gold for all of that sustain the entire game.

i buy this every single game. i'd rather not have people say its UP then have it get buffed then people realize its a great value and have it get nerfed to under what it is now.

??? so then why buy potions at all since you are delaying your powerspike with them too? the point is they help sustain so that I can make plays and farm. it's not delaying if I actually get the item FASTER because I was able to farm more camps or go for a gank i wouldn't have been able to. plus once I get my jungle item then what? i still would have no sustain to farm or be healthy for ganks.

look you need to buy pots at the start of the game or you will have zreo Jung sustain right? so why pay 150 gold for an item that will only heal 200 hp total when you can get 3 hp pots that will heal you for 450 hp total? you would have to back 3 times just to break even with hp pots and at that point you should have your finished jung item so sustain isn't a problem at that point because of the lifestal, vamp, and mana regen you get from it, effectively making the hunters potion useless.

wat first off refilling pots give you 125 a charge, so 250 total. so it takes only going back once to already not only break even but PASS the gold efficiency of the 3 pots, and you STILL have the refilling potion for later backs. after one back you can consider the refilling potion already paid for. and if you don't upgrade to the hunters potion then, its EVEN MORE GOLD EFFICIENT. anyway its just 250 gold for hunter's potion upgrade. as i explained above in one clear it heals over 500 (and hundreds of mana as well) and that's without even going back a single time. and you can't really buy anything else other than actual pots with 250g anyway so it's not really in the way of anything. and it can make the difference between being healthy enough or having enough mana to secure a kill or a dive or not. or being able to take an objective safely.

you are free to believe whatever logic you feel but like I said if you would like to learn then feel free to spectate my games.

This. I am one of those who use the refillable and yeah it is worth. And consider that if you don't buy it 90% of times you need to buy more pots because the 3 that you take at the beginning are not enough to suistain you during the early game. That being said the refillable is also extremely good for some extra mana suistain during mid game. Yeah i will delay a bit an item but with the refillable i can pressure the map and the enemy jungler more.

Watch as how the enemy jungler can freely apply pressure wherever you want because he has more farm and an upgraded smite you don't. Try to prevent him from doing that and you'll die because he's already ahead.

And I'm supposing you are doing that with a champion that already struggles in early, because there is no reason to buy Hunter's pot with a strong-early champion like Xin because they simply don't need it.

Do your first combat camp and buff camp, then recall for Hunter's with your 260g.

You're hardly set back, and you are healthy as can be from then on.

TheDiff4 votes

Yeah idk why the big upset, even with the 3 health pots after red/blue im always around 75% hp. So after that buffi would get a camp and then gank a lane. Afterwards i would back, get the hunters pot and a ward or a small item and go for my other buff. It is really good sustain if you have lifesteal/spell vamp runes. Not to mention the passive health the camp gives you once you kill them.

junglerboy168 votes

I've found it's only good for AFK junglers like Udyr MasterYi Jax who want to rush item 1415 and then stack it without ever leaving the jungle for mana or HP.

It's also good for if you want to take a super early solo dragon and need sustain and would start refillable anyway, since you can burn all 5 charges without a second though each time you take dragon, making it a lot cheaper than stacking HP pots.

The biggest problem it has right now is that early on, you can't afford to take it instead of machete or talisman because they offer better clear speed and exp, but later on once you have both of the other items, it isn't worthwhile anymore since you spend a great deal less time trying to survive the jungle and more time trying to impact the rest of the game.

Dan Abnormal11 votes

it delays your devourer, meaning it delays your stacks. also none of these 3 champions need hunters potion to stay healthy

junglerboy165 votes

It's mostly for the mana, actually. Also, if you start item 1041 item 2031 it doesn't delay your devourer any more than buying normal potions

the heal is just not good enough as it is...with 3potions you have a lot better clear early on, and later sustain isn´t a problem anymore for most champs (and even if it would be - for the money you can afford 9normal potions to get through to level 6+).

Its not sustaining through the jungle that this item is helpful for. Its for continuously fighting and ganking. That's what makes it a fairly powerful option. I can go and gank a lane, take some damage, heal it off, gank another lane, heal it off, do some camps, gank a lane, heal it off, grab the crab, heal it off, gank a lane, do a camp, heal it off.

Its that I can do this and never have to back making a huge impact in the lanes VERY early in the game helping me snowball the team.

For those of us who were used to buying 20 or 30 or even 40 pots a match as a jungler in the past this item is now actually saving so much money that the item price increases don't matter too much and you can actually be a 1000g item ahead at about 20 minutes compared to what was possible on average in season 5.

The hunters pot gets a bad rap. It really is better than people think it is. It only seems underwhelming because people aren't using it in the proper fashion.

Earl Eulrich2 votes

the thing is...no top tier jungler does need the option to already do this anyway. Also, if you get it after the first back you delay your 700g jungle item what mostly means: less xp, less vision for not that much actual sustain compared to another 1-2healing potions.

All the early-snowball junglers have more than enough sustain to keep up ganking and jungling (lee, elise, xin,...), and everyone else really wants more xp and vision to play a controled game.

If you need any pots on lee or elise... or xin... ever really...

But for some one like Evelynn it can make all the difference in the world.

Hell, I take it on Hecarim too just so I don't have to use any abilities aside from q on camps and can save all that mana and give away blue buffs all day long.

If you back immediately after 2 camps with that 250 and get to your second buff you still make it to first ganks by 3:30 as basically any champion. That means you can spend the next 6:30 never having to back and constantly using your buffs to gank and snowball the heck out of the game.

It lets you keep up with the junglers you mentioned as basically anything. You could play fizz jungle the way I describe and have equally strong sustain and gank ability. That's what people are not seeming to understand about this particular potion. Its very good at fulfilling its role and its niche and that's to allow other junglers to have a hope of competing with Lee and Elise which were buffed to high heaven with the changes this preseason.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

or you get 3potions and can actually gank before your first back and catch someone by surprise and then snowball harder because you get the xp/vision earlier. i know what the hunters potion is tryingto do...but it just doesn´t really work this way. If you want an early game jungler you´ll never pick eve over lee or elise if you are really trying to win, as they are just doing the same thing better still. also, 6min without going back leave you very vulnerable, as 2k gold in your inv doesn´t do anything for you if your opponents can fight you after spending his money on actual items. well, anecdotes really aren´t of much use (and i really don´t understand how your opponents could lose this when their lanes apparently had been doing a lot better)...the thing is most junglers that would need more sustain have those troubles in the first 1-3clears, and for those you get more hp from potions than from hunters. So there´s about no champ besides eve that can sort of use it efficiently, and even on her it doesn´t matter much if you go hunters or fast slow-smite, either way you relay on your opponents overpushing getting you into the game fast.

The point of the pic is more that Lee was in that game. And the Lee actually performed ok. He had the bad luck of playing against a diamond jungler who just completely took over the game and 1v5'd for the win. Which sort of points out the flaw in your argument that the hunters pot is useless when my point was that it allows junglers like an eve to keep pace or even out pace them (provided you are skilled enough to compete with that amount of early game pressure with a less effective early game champ).

There are plenty of champs besides eve I would take it on. Basically every jungler I play aside from elise I would use it on and take it immediately after the first 2 camps, maybe 3 camps. I don't play a good Lee so I can't say how effective it is on him, but I probably would not take it. And sure, you can get more hp out of pots, but that also requires a lot more gold. That sets you back item wise. The better option is to be more efficient and take an item that's gold efficient basically 5 minutes into the game and only provides a profit for the remainder of it.

Bottom line, the potion is undervalued, not underwhelming. People simply aren't adapting to this set of patches very quickly and aren't realizing the situations in which some items are capable of performing a particular function in a superior way. Is the potion a niche item? Yeah, I would say so. Is it good in that niche? Very much so.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

lee has a winrate <50% because 90%of lee players do okish early-mid but absolutly cannot use the champ later on, so all you have to do vs lee mostly is control the game and win it mid-late in SoloQ. i´ve beaten "good" Lees with jungle vlad, that really doesn´t prove anything.

in the end it´s a matter of playstyle, for strategic junglers that want to control the game it sucks, and unfortunatlly most of the supportive/control oriented junglers really can´t use the hunters potion as they wouldn´t be able to clear the first round quickly to 700g without 3 potions (while most aggressive jungler s apart from eve really don´t benefit from hunters).

And another of my points that you are missing is that with the current set of patch changes and the meta shift that style of jungling is counterproductive already. Its a losing strategy in a patch set dominated by early pressure junglers that can snowball a game to a win by the 10th minute. You cannot afford to spend the first 10, or even 6 minutes, in the jungle on this patch and expect to win the game. You just cant. If you intend to play the style you describe you are costing your team the game in lobby and its a bad choice. Its not the pot that makes a difference in this regard, its the nature of the vision changes mostly that allows the early pressure junglers to gank unseen so often so early. If the vision changes are reverted or the current state of early vision is buffed those types of champions may become competitively viable again, but at this point in time junglers like: Nunu Warwick MasterYi simply aren't viable picks in high level competitive play without serious team organization in lobby to allow for that pick in the first place.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

nah, you can still easily play for mid-late if you control the game early on - just play save lanes and set up good vision and there´s nothing the other jungler can do to force the issue.

nah, you can still easily play for mid-late if you control the game early on - just play save lanes and set up good vision and there´s nothing the other jungler can do to force the issue.

What vision? Trinket recharge times doubled or more depending on how far into the game you are and the ward timer for the trinket wards was halved. They also removed green wards from the shop.

You really can't do what you are describing in high level play. Its just not possible because the tools to implement that type of strategy do not exist any more.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

i think now you´re really underrating the green-jungle trinket...you can easily keep one lane save with vision while being on the otherside to have the countergank option available - also, the more competitive it gets the saver the laners will play, so you won´t get the early snowball nearly as often and games will mostly get deceided mid-late still.

Edit: funnily enough i´ve played a nunu and a ww game today and in both games i put down the most wards on the map (~30 in ~35min games), vision is only bad if the jungler doesn´t help with controlling it atm (sure, still had been better in s5 but you can work with it anyway atm)...also i did win both games.

So, stupid me, I never thought to try Hunter's potion as a first item, so I did. I tried clearing and sustaining in the JG with Wukong who has pretty bad innate sustain. It took me about 11:40 to have enough gold to buy an upgraded JG item and to be at level 6. With Machette, it took me 8:30 to have enough gold for upgraded JG item and to be at level 6.

From this I can see that buying Hunter's potion will set your power spike back by roughly 3 minutes.

You just used it wrong. You spent 10 minutes afk farming, the absolute worst thing you can possibly do on this set of patches. Hunters pot is meant to enable champions who have hp issues to gank early and often and never have to stop.

You guys are all under the misconception its used to sustain against the camps. It is NOT.

It is SUPPOSED to be used to constantly gank lanes in the early stages of the game. Participate in a a gank or two instead of playing like a fool and losing your team the game by afking to PVE the jungle and you are on the exact same time table. Participate in 5 or 6 ganks in that time frame like I do, like other good players are doing, and you are way ahead.

You assume the gank is successful and that you cannot gank that many times with other JG items. Unsuccessful ganks with hunter's will put you further behind unsuccessful ganks with other JG items as well. Apples to apples my original point still stands.

That's why I specified 'x number of large monsters', laner abused drops off drastically if for example you get one larger potion charge per 2 or 3 large monster kills.

It's because by the Jungle item itself usually gives enough sustain by the time Hunter's Poion is bought, meaning it is usually better to just upgrade your item then rush an enchant, upon which Hunter's Potion is usually next to useless in the long run. I would buy Hunter's Potion if it could instead store Jungle Buffs for later activation so I'm not wasting any time of Red Buff. Similar to Bottle from Dota 2 with Runes.
