it is difficult to distinguish the difference between MIA pings and WTF pings
and they cost me games. Can riot do something about it by using an icon other than a question mark?

No, it's an issue with people, not the game. A question mark fits the description very well. What other symbol could be they use that's better?
apparently rito will not ban every single player who uses MIA ping for WTF ping, so reworking the ping is the alternative in that case
That doesn't actually answer what symbol it could be instead.
Remember it has to be a symbol that is understood across regions, so letters don't strike me as an option.
! is taken for danger. @ almost conveys the opposite meaning in this context. # might be spammed as a ping equivalent of a censored swear. $ would be spammed whenever someone got a kill for swag points. etc.
The question mark has its use - missing enemy or unsure where the enemy is. If a person is using it for "WTF" then you have to ask why that person is playing at all.

No, you have to ask "Why am I a retard making "WTF" plays?"
Generally, I just question why I can't mute an individual player's pings.

Probably because communication is still needed in the game. If you mute someone, then you might not get the warning of a jungler's gank, a person who is about to move to another lane, a dragon about to be taken, etc. Chat mute is usually enough. If the noise bothers you, then turn it down. But you can't play league solo - after all it is league, not one person vs him/her-self.
If the player is constantly spamming pings in a rage, they have nothing value to contribute. I'd rather just not have to hear them.
Other players in the game might use them properly and have something to contribute, so muting all pings isn't helpful.
Lol what's a "wtf" ping. That isnt something riot came up with. That's something that bad players do who dont know how to communicate.

WTF pings are brilliant, don't be salty cause you get called out for being trash.
This belongs on memes and games
if someone drops a missing ping, then you look at your mini map. Is the laner there? no? Then it's probably a missing enemy ping and you should be careful. I tend to drop a MIA ping, then warning pings along their path if I saw them going there.
that's not the point. I should be able know whether it's MIA or WTF solely by sound. Just like how i can tell ASSISTME/DANGER/COMING pings purely by sound. Thanks to the question mark, it's used as both MIA and WTF.
you should look at the minimap anyway to see where it is. They're not going to make a wtf ping, and when used right, the mia ping is exactly how it should be.
An actual WTF ping is almost certainly not going to be added because it's somewhat toxic in nature, so people would just use a different ping (or the new ping) to express WTF moments anyway.
because it's hyper toxic in nature
fify
Here's how to tell the difference: if you die and someone spams the question mark, it's a wtf. If someone on the enemy team is missing, it's a MIA. if you've made it 20 minutes into hte game and get your first death, it's a wtf. If it's anything slightly negative, it's a wtf.
Rarely is it actually an MIA.

and then there's a time when it's a legit MIA, and i die cuz i ignore it assuming it's a WTF, following the general rules as u said
1-2 for actual missing players.
17-35 for what the fuck play was that
