Why does Olaf lose his resists when he ults?

Big Lincoln··3 votes·1,019 views

makes no sense to me that a guy who's encouraged to run into the enemy team is punished for it with less durability

The AD steroid is nice (at least 2 AD items, I like my Olaf high-test), but I don't feel like it's entirely warranted now that Olaf's been underperforming since SOTA removal?

It'd be a nice compensation for the loss in HP, even if he (partially) gains it back by running stoneborn

Because having a fast as Hell, not lockdownable, crazy barbarian with true damage running through your team and killing your adc and mid is crazy enough.

So, you play juggernauts, right?

Now, imagine if you couldn't be CC'd and had a permanent 60% movespeed boost towards enemy champions, and a ranged slow.

Think how broken that would be.

Now imagine if you weren't quite as tanky.

That's Olaf, and that's balanced.

In theory, anyway. Numbers will always need tuning as the game changes.

permanent 60% movespeed boost

it's only for the first second of his ult

40 armor/MR is hardly a lot, either; as far as defensive steroids go, it's fairly tame.

I mean I can get where you're coming from, but given that Olaf took a big hit from the loss of SOTA and doesn't have a very good keystone anymore (he can use Fervor/Stoneborn well enough but Pact needs 6000 HP to match SOTA and he doesn't benefit from the sustain it gives), I don't feel like it would be too strong right now.

Oh. Oops.

Meh, it's pretty decent. I mean, it's not the best, but it is the passive. Garen's W gives him 30 armor and MR I believe, and I'm not sure when Poppy gets over 40 armor and MR from her W passive.

I get it, but on the other hand, it's pretty much the same with any other auto attack based bruiser/diver. Fervor nerfs hit all of them, so I don't think it'd be too bad on him (it has received successive buffs). Then, again, as I saw in competitive 2016, Olaf had plenty of damage to run at and kill an Ashe and her support with nothing but Righteous Glory (well, not sure if he had Cinderhulk). I don't think he's gotten any nerfs since, so he should be fine. I mean, he was played in competitive, so he can't be too bad.

If he's gotten any direct or indirect nerfs since then, I am not aware of them, but those should be taken into account and might change my opinion.

removal of strength of the ages dropped his winrate down to like 44% at the start of season 7, it's very slowly recovering but he's been out of the meta ever since

which is really all I wanted to bring up since I think the ult change might balance out the loss of HP? but it could probably be implemented better

Olaf has meta problems because he lacks hard CC and has health costs without any safe mitigations.

The theme works, it works in his kit. If he needs power, let him have it in pressing dangerous offense, not supporting his defense. Give his axe an impact AOE or something to encourage his entry, but don't be giving him extra defense without taking something away. I think Olaf with 40/40, 80 AD and CC immunity would make his ult 6 seconds of 'I hope you brought your entire team to focus down Olaf, because he can't be stunned and is made of lifesteal and attack speed now.'

It's already bad enough he can't be controlled out of it, he doesn't need to be less killable. I think if he needs power, it should be elsewhere in his kit.

Not being able to be CCed is good enough. Having more resists on top of that would be absurd.

Since you can't CC him, there has to be some way you can stop him. Although I admit, it's not friendly to an Olaf that's behind, but he farms so well that he shouldn't ever be too far behind.

He's still a tier A jungler, he's probably fine.

Since most of the comments here involve the practical side of Olaf's Ragnarok, I'm going to provide the thematic side of it.

Olaf is a berserker, a warrior who loses himself in an unholy rage and swings wildly to devastate anything in his path - when his blood boils, when his body is lost in the motion of killing, he doesn't care to notice he's stopped guarding against attacks, all he cares about is that his axes meet flesh. Ragnarok is the Berserker's completely reckless abandon. To go into this blood rage, Olaf would lose any concept of self preservation; that is why he loses his resistances.

It's a lore-feeling type thing. He WANTS to die. He is TRYING to die a good death. Also, it's fairly common for a berserker class to lose defensive abilities when they rage. Sometimes they lose access to other abilities, but not always. If he ever gets a rework, giving him different abilities when he's in ult would be a cool thing that would work with his thematic.

Olaf being immune to disables means he can run straight at the ADC.

He needs a counter-point to allow counter-play. The answer is , focus fire Olaf... it also helps his passive.
