How do you use Irelia without feeding?

Just dusted her off, haven't played her in a long while, went 5/18/13. Tempted to shelve her back and never touch her again after that, but trying to figure out if she's worth trying to play again.

Built item 3078 item 3083 item 3111 item 3026 and that's as far as I got before the game ended. Tried to focus on defensives when I started getting too many deaths but I was 3k-5k gold behind all my allies and did almost no damage when trying to Q enemies.

And frankly just reading over her kit, I don't get how she's at all an "assassin". Hiten Style does nothing for fast burst damage and Equilibrium Strike scales with a damage stat she doesn't build and only stuns if she's on the losing end of a skirmish.

I don't think I get Irelia at all, frankly.

Start with a cloth and some potions, or a flask and potions against AP/mixed damage champs and last hit until Hiten Style reaches level 3, at which point you will be able to win trades against quite a few of the conventional toplaners. Rush a Tforce or BotRK and follow it up with enough beef to survive midgame team fights. 21/9/0 masteries are generally the way to go since the %dmg helps to boost your true damage. Provided you've farmed up, you will absolutely wreck midgame and continue to do so until the 5-man pushes start, where your role will change from bursting down squishes to peeling for your own.

Irelia is a weird champion in the sense that she's an assassin but extremely good at breaking through peels, thanks to her passive and gap-closer. She can also itemize very tanky and still do pretty formidable damage.

Wait so, I want to max Hiten Style first, not Bladesurge?

Hiten Style give you sustain, True damage, and over all dueling power. Blade surge could possibly be leveled last if your really good about Judging the health of the minions. It should be used mostly for movement anyway.

Generally I see the enemy near a low health minion. Q said minion, E for the stun on the enemy, Hiten style, and that should give you a fairly favorable trade. And because her Q resets on unit kill, you can use again on the enemy if they try to flash or dash away.

I honestly like running a defensive set-up early against hard matchups. Health Regen Quints and a Doran's Shield (when you've done a jungle camp at level 1 to buy more potions) combined with her innate sustain can make her very difficult to harass out of lane. Doran's Shield and Attack Speed Quints are better for a more offensive start against easy matchup, in my experience.

Irelia can be considered an assassin in the sense that she can dive on, stick to, and quickly kill squishy opponents. She has great synergy with Trinity Force and can use her ultimate to get multiple Spellblade procs for burst damage and her passive lets her shrug off a lot of CC.

You can look at my (and others') advice here for tips on building her.
