PSA: Rylais is only strong because it was massively buffed and its slot competition was nerfed.

item 3157 ---> lost 50AP, active nerfed heavily.

Meanwhile item 3116 went from 35% slow on single target spells and 15% for everything else for 1 second to 40% on single target, AoE, Dots, and 20% on minions for 1.5 seconds.

The last change to rylais was in 5.22 where its cost went up from 3000 to 3200. The change you're referencing was in 5.13 which was:

single Target Slow increased to 40% from 35% Area of Effect Slow (instant) increased to 40% from 15% Damage over time or Multi-hit Slow increased to 20% for 1 second from 15% for 1.5 seconds summoned minions now slow on-hit 20% for 1 second along with a recipe change that increased its cost from 2900 to 3000.

That means there was a whole season of rylais being untouched and no one complained until after the mage update. In the update mages lost high end ap items and cdr got tacked on to everything. This made bursting people harder and has such required a mage to rely on doing more than one rotation. Rylais synergizes really well with cdr and it makes hitting the next rotation easier.

Before the update if you wanted high cdr you gave up ap. Now mages are pretty much forced into high cdr builds and lower ap values. Lower ap means lower burst potential. This also leads to protobelt and the icicle thing being popular choices because even though they don't give ap they provide damage through their actives and thats being seen as a problem as well.

Instead of nerfing an item that hasn't changed for a long time leaving mages with no alternatives will just hurt the class. Instead we should make it so rylais isn't always the best choice by giving mages back their options. Make cdr a choice not a given (I believe this to be true for lol as a whole). Give mages high end item options that can compete with rylais like before. If rylais continues to be a problem then it should be nerfed.

I agree. It's been untouched all season, and it flew under the radar until after the mage update and now it's the only item left standing that wasn't nerfed into oblivion.

Also, CDR is a big problem with mages right now, because literally every mage in the game (with the exception of manaless champs like Kennen Vladimir ) builds Morello's as their first item, so basically every mage gets a default 20% CDR every match, and with the abundance of it on so many items it's not hard to get the other 20%. Most will buy Zhonya's for the active, and then protobelt its active and health, and boom, max CDR.

Mages don't have a lot of choices when it comes to builds right now. There's so few items to choose from, and there's only 4 items in the game that give 100 AP, those being item 3285 item 3165 item 3027 and item 3116 . One of those is built every game. Ludens is garbage and is too expensive for how little it gives. RoA is situational and the mid game is really important right now, most can't afford to delay their power spike. That only leaves Rylai's, as this jack-of-all-trades and master -of-all-trades item. You'd have to be crazy not to build it these days. I think it should give 300 HP. 60-70 AP, and have the slow nerfed a bit, with no added CDR, there's already plenty of that.

item 3048

Just by itself so long as you have at least 1,000 mana gives 110 AP

80+3% of current mana. People tend to forget its a high AP item also because its max AP is variable.

With item 3040 item 3165 item 3027 it becomes 134 AP + 3% of the champs mana.

I always say that. Mages build Rylai's mostly because majority of them has huge issues in completing 6-item build without buying an item that is straight up shit on them, or at least very situational.

Hourglass needs to be buffed back to 120AP and the CDR needs to go =/ Ludens could use a buff back to 120AP too, but with hourglass back to normal rylais will be a choice... Rylais could also use a reversion back to what it was before.

So long as all the other big ticket AP items are stuck at 100 AP, nothing else (asides from Deathcap) should go over that. I would however be down with Hourglass getting some AP back at the cost of the cdr. I can't justify the item on champions that don't have ultimate synergy with it over Rylai's or raw damage items.

I mean... fair enough i suppose. Originally there was the trifecta, though; item 3089 item 3285 item 3157. 360AP+35%AP.

Rylais was always meant to be a niche item for low mobility mages to combat mobility. such mages usually had long CC and some form of sustained damage with little actual burst.

majulito2 votes

Problem is cdr is very accessible and ap is lower. So burst is lower and mage damage is more sustained now hence the rise of rylais.

The solution to this is that other big ticket AP items shouldn't be at 100 AP, they should be at 120. I'd kinda agree with leaving Zhonya's at 100 AP even after that though, 120 AP Hourglass always felt like it was too good and was removing actual item choice.

What I'd personally do with it is put its base armour at 35 and its base AP at 85 and allow it to carry stacks from Seeker's over for a cap of 50/100. In doing that you could also leave the price around its current value and make it a more solid rush into AD.

I do think Luden's needs to go back to 120 though. It's just bad at 100, I almost never see anyone build it because it's an even weaker Deathcap. You can always just build Voidstaff for more damage. I also think there should be another 120 AP item introduced to hopefully give Mages some build diversity and something has to be done about Morello's, which is way too good.

They lowered AP totals across the board so they could increase the passive on Deathcap in order to make Deathcap a desirable item. I think the numbers are fine right now and that this wouldn't be worth doing.

This isn't a bad idea. I've never really understood why Seeker's had the stacking mechanic despite none existing on Zhonya's.

I'm pretty sure that Luden's gives you more raw damage on any champion as a first or second buy. This makes it a strong pick up on assassins and other single target burst champions. Deathcap outscales it later when you have more items for the passive to work with. It is also a fair bit cheaper, making it a much better rush item.

something has to be done about Morello's, which is way too good.

It's only too good in the absence of anything to compete with it. Athene's was taking away as a competing item, and Tear builds will never be good on everyone making Morello the only choice for mana sustain on most champions. Imo they need to either make something that has as good mana sustain, but with some other utility asides from Grevious Wounds, or they need to remove the Grevious Wounds from Morello and make a new (niche) item for AP champions with it.

Well they failed, because Deathcap is currently a terrible pickup in the majority of games.

Yes AP numbers are fine, while Morello's, Void and Rylai's are broken. If you nerf these 3 items, which needs to be done AP numbers would no longer be fine.

I'm pretty sure that Luden's gives you more raw damage on any champion as a first or second buy. This makes it a strong pick up on assassins and other single target burst champions. No single item gives you more damage than a Voidstaff. Against a 57 MR target, which is flat runes and a Locket buff you increase your damage by 9%. That's all of your magic damage though, bases and ratios, in basically the lowest realistic case for MR. Plus you get the 70 AP on top of that and it costs 550 less gold, so you can throw an Amp Tome on top of that for 90 AP. What that means is for Luden's to ever be better its passive and 10 AP need to do more than a straight 9% increase to damage. Do the maths on any champion, it doesn't. Two ability hits will normally make Void better. To add to this there's always going to be champs with more than 57 MR, so Void just wins out huge.

Deathcap is just too expensive. Void costs over 1k less gold than it and is often actually a bigger swing in damage. Once again the minimum that a Void can increase your damage by is a flat 9%, Deathcap is a 35% AP boost, the actual flat AP numbers are about the same since you can throw a NLR ontop of your Void for 100 gold for a total of 130 AP, 10 higher than Deathcap's raw amount. The difference here is that a 35% AP boost is actually bigger than the 9% damage boost, just. But the second someone picks up something like a QSS or isn't a glass cannon Void+NLR is far better than Deathcap.

Oh, by the way, did I mention that that 9% assumes no Sorc Shoes? If you have them it's actually a 12% difference, at which point you can start to question if it's better than the 35% AP from Deathcap. If you're running flat pen Reds and the Mpen mastery too it's 14%, at which point it is better than a 35% increase to AP without contest, and this is still in a best case scenario for Deathcap vs a low MR target.

Imo they need to either make something that has as good mana sustain, but with some other utility asides from Grevious Wounds, or they need to remove the Grevious Wounds from Morello and make a new (niche) item for AP champions with it.

No, it's straight up too good. It's a 112% gold efficient item which has the highest AP of any current non Deathcap/Soulstealer item. There's pretty much no reason not to build a Morello's right now, even if you're going Tear it's still a solid item because it's 100 AP and 20% CDR, that's never not good. If you removed the mana from Morello's it would still be a fairly good item, that's how out of line it is right now.

Again, I said as a first or second item Luden's gives more damage. This is before the support could possibly have their locket. After you finish 2 items Luden's becomes worthless as a purchase on everyone, but as a rush it eclipses everything else for damage. Later on in the game you'll need to pick up a Voidstaff to counter mr purchases, but that's how it should be.

I honestly don't understand why it has to be either or here. If you are picking up a deathcap you should also be buying a Voidstaff anyway. Deathcap is an item for people who want to do as much damage as possible, Voidstaff helps in that endeavor as well.

Oh, by the way, did I mention that that 9% assumes no Sorc Shoes? If you have them it's actually a 12% difference, at which point you can start to question if it's better than the 35% AP from Deathcap. Since you brought up gold efficiency earlier, I should mention that Void Staff is only 65.7% gold efficient before the passive and doesn't reach 100% unless it's hitting 24.4 pen which requires a target to have 69.6 mr, well over your 57 number. Seems to me that I'm overpaying for this damage boost. For reference, Deathcap exceeds 100% cost efficiency if you have as little as 36 AP from other items.

Remove the mana from Morello and AP champions that can't stack Tear and have mana would cease being playable. The main draw of the item is the mana economy it gives you, take that away and anyone that can't cope will go to Tear or RoA builds, which are far less effective at solving mana economy issues. Morello can't really take a hit to its stats and still allow for AP champions to be viable. You could justify a cost increase to reduce its cost efficiency or a removal of grievous wounds, but that's about it. Anything more would potentially destroy anyone that buys it.

You want to nerf all of the good AP items, leaving only mediocre ones left. None of the other items feel that great. Most are too niche for anyone outside the niche too want. Several have very little AP (80 or less) to make them worthwhile for damage builds. Games don't really last long enough for Deathcap to matter, as it's not amazing until 5th or 6th item. Additionally mr pen is in an awful state compared to armor pen, too many nerfs to AP items will just bring about full AD comps.

Venedictos1 votes

I disagree with your comment. I believe that there's a good reason Zhonya's Hourglass has the stats it has right now. If it was to be pushed back to a "big damage ticket" item, it would bring around the same problem Rylai's brings, yet way more obnoxious and invisible. Its never a good idea for items to provide both strong defensive and offensive benefits at the same time and makes full offensive builds unrewarding. I agree there need to be competitors for the slot Rylai's currently is occupying in mage builds, but Zhonya's isn't the item for the job.

LankPants3 votes

You mean like what Merc Scim does currently? I'm fine if you want to cripple that item and leave Zhonya's weak, but there can't be a double standard here. Either both need to be weak or both need to be strong.

WarlockLaw2 votes

I agree there need to be competitors for the slot Rylai's currently is occupying in mage builds, but Zhonya's isn't the item for the job.

I can't think of a better item for the job. Both are currently intended as AP items that grant defensive utility. Outside of stat gains, nothing else really exists to do so unless you're a tanky mage, in which case RoA (and other catalyst items) exist.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

That's good. Riot nerfed it so the stasis active wouldn't be in every single game.

And now they're nerfing Rylai's so the slow won't be in every single game.

We need more high AP items without problematic effects in the League for the stat stickers out there.

Probably the best solution is to make Rylai's 100 AP, 300 mana 10% CDR so the mages who do build it aren't so hard to kill.

Vistha Kai2 votes

They nerfed Zhoyna's AP for it to not be in every single game.

The nerf to stasis on top of that made Zhonya so weak, you don't want the item, even when you want the active.

The Yetii Rider2 votes

Yeah the active CD nerf was a bit much.

WarlockLaw2 votes

Imo the nerf to Zhonya's was entirely unjustified as Mercurial has always been a better item. Stasis only saves you in very few situations. Most of the time it will just delay your death or leave you out of position as the enemy team can maneuver around you. Mercurial on the other hand will never leave you out of position when you use it, so you only have situations where it doesn't matter and ones where it does.

If Zhonya's is to stay in the state it's in the Mercurial should, at the very least, lose its lifesteal.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

Stasis uniquely allows a few situations that are better than Scimitar.

A) It resets turret aggro, allowing you to survive a dive after you get the kill

B) It forces the enemy team to switch targets mid fight, allowing your tank to get into position to disrupt or peel for you after you exit stasis.

C) It allows champions with extremely disruptive ultimate to act as initiation for their team (Kennen, Morgana, Fiddlesticks)

Sure those are both nice, but Mercurial gives you extra movement speed to get out of trouble, and can also remove the most devastating cc the enemy team has. This becomes exacerbated when the enemy team doesn't have much hard cc. Also, Mercurial has lifesteal giving it far more utility outside of combat (with the enemy team).

C) It allows champions with extremely disruptive ultimate to act as initiation for their team (Kennen, Morgana, Fiddlesticks)

At this rate I may as well mention the champions whose ults cease to exist when qss/Mercurial are bought (Warwick, Skarner, Malzahr). Those champions were balanced around the item existing, and that teamfight pattern took a hit in power when they increased the cd of the active.

As far as the actives are concerned, Zhonay's allows for worse plays due to trapping you in a position for a set amount of time, whereas Mercurial gives you the movement speed to go wherever you need to. Essentially the best plays with either item are at about the same level, whereas the worst play for Zhonya's kills you directly while the worst for Mercurial wastes a cooldown.

While I honestly believe it should be: Single Target- 30% for 1.25 seconds Area of Effect- 25% for 1 second DoT and Multi-Hit- 15% for 1 second Pet- 20% for 0.625 seconds and maybe have it have more health and less AP provided.

It does indeed. Because of the incredible buffs rylais received and the nerfs hourglass received rylais, which was a balanced item previously, suddenly became less niche and INCREDIBLY powerful. Spammy mages coming back into the meta have since added fuel to the fire. the difference between 15% and 40% is quite high. And i vaguely recall casses twin fang having a unique interaction with rylais where it applied as not single target because it was such a low CD.

You're right about the cass interaction with her twin fang it used to be treated as an aoe for spell vamp and rylais. But they changed it however at the time I believe she still relied on hitting her q or w in order to spam e. However after the mage update her e is now spammable without hitting the q or w so now she just hits the e and then tries to q you for the damage amp on e.

... "omg dis so op nerf nerf nerf". Ignorance i suppose; the sheep dont really understand nuance. Rylais is indeed a powerful item, but it was MADE a powerful item by direct nerfs to its competition, un-needed and extreme buffs to its slow, and the rise of spammy mages.

You are continuing to explain the same point I have already acknowledged.. We know why it's good. That doesn't matter though. If your post had said "to fix the Rylai's problem just revert hourglass" that would at least be helpful. But the current post reads more like "They nerfed hourglass, so this is in now, deal with it".

Let's say you go to a bad part of town and get shot. Then you go to the ER where the doctor spends 30 minutes saying "well if you hadn't been in that neighborhood you probably wouldn't have gotten shot". How is that helpful? You just want him to fix the problem, not give you reasons why it's a problem.

TequilaZombie5 votes

Ok, we all want less mages slowing our asses. We all agree on that. The question is:

HOW THE FUCK WE DO THAT?

To know the answer to this question we need to know why every mage is buying it. Why is it attractive? What can we change and what we shouldn't change?

This post serves as a way to understand the problem so it can be fixed.

LankPants3 votes

To know the answer to this question we need to know why every mage is buying it. Why is it attractive? What can we change and what we shouldn't change?

Because there's 4 good AP items right now. Protobelt, Morello's, Voidstaff and Rylai's. That's why almost every mage build is Morello's>Rylai's>Voidstaff or Protobelt>Rylai's>Voidstaff. Every other mage item is either situational on a champion level or bad.

TequilaZombie2 votes

It was a rethorical question, but you're correct. We indeed need more good AP items.

Except nothing in the context mentions fixing the problem. Just tells you why it's there. Somehow nobody else seems to understand that.

TequilaZombie2 votes

We all understood that. However, this thread purpose is not to say "Hey, I have a fully developed conclusion on how we should solve the Rylai's problem", but rather a "Hey, you know that problem we're having with Rylais? I think I know what's causing it!"

LXII1 votes

And here we are, back at the beginning lol.

TeCoolMage2 votes

How do you not understand that knowing the problem makes it easier to find the solution

LXII1 votes

As I have mentioned a thousand times already, OP never once said anything about fixing the problem. When I read this post my take was that OP was saying "Rylai's is busted because Zhonya's got nerfed, deal with it."

Maybe that's what they meant, maybe it isn't. Fact is there was no context provided so that's how I took it.

TeCoolMage1 votes

PSA is typically used to remind people of a problem. PSA: Lee Sin has too many abilities, PSA: Sona has damage and healing at the same time

And despite the fact you didn't know this, you still selectively inferred 'deal with it' while not inferring that he was doing it to fix the problem

At the very least you could've assumed he was simply pointing out facts for people to use, discuss, or do anything with, but no, you instead assumed he had a bad motive in mind, to tell people that it wasn't worth fixing and they just had to deal with it.

Saying he didn't provide context doesn't excuse you to make up your own.

LXII1 votes

There are literally only two possibilities. "deal with it" Or "fix this"

Since most Rylai's threads are very open about the "fix this" side I assumed the other. Not to mention the title sounds like an excuse defending the item.

You took it one way, I took it another.

doiminat0r36002 votes

Much like how vayne was popular in mid-late season 5. All of Vayne's counters were nerfed in preparation for their rework.

ModKnightsKemplar4 votes

Ok, well let me answer a different way from the OP.

It matters because the reason it is strong directly influences the solution to the problem. If it's strong because other items are weak, rylai's may not need a fix. If it's strong because there's a bit too much AP, then we can lower that and fix it. If it's strong because the slow is just too much, we should lower it.

In this case, I think it could be a combination of those, but Riot isn't considering nerfing the item. They are considering reworking it to make it better for mages. Now, this may not matter to YOU, but if you've been paying attention to boards, you know that people who play AP bruisers are very upset. Rylai's is core for them, and reworking it for mages means they won't be effective anymore. This could make champs like mordekaiser unviable with their current kit.

So, this post attempted to address that concern; basically, Rylai's is strong for mages because "it was massively buffed and its slot competition was nerfed." If the community can get Riot to understand that, maybe we can convince them not to rework the item for them. It wasn't designed for them and they shouldn't need it anyway (in many people's opinion, including my own).

So yes, to answer your question. It matters. The intricacies of design in a game this big are complicated, and people who are passionate about the game enjoy discussing them. It can have an impact on their favorite champs viability and general enjoyment. That's why it matters. If it doesn't to you, I don't personally blame you, but you're getting so many downvotes for failing to understand that other people really care about this.

LXII1 votes

I agree with all of that. But you're inventing the context here, OP literally said none of that. My earlier synopsis of the post being "This is why Rylai's is strong, it's here to stay, deal with it" is closer to what this reads as.

If there had been even one sentence that pointed in the other direction I wouldn't have asked, but there wasn't. They never said "this is why it's strong, so we can't just nerf it" etc.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

I'm not defending his post. Having said that, though...

This post happened in a context that included a lot of other boards posts regarding this item. Ignoring the rest of that discussion in your response is what has you arguing with strangers on the internet.

I have a friend named Jon that does this a lot; he argues for the sake of arguing. Not because he believes in his point, but because he enjoys some harmless trolling. In his honor, I now call that phenomenon "Jonflict." Jonflict is a conflict, but specifically a conflict with no point other than to troll.

So if wanted a Jonflict based on the lack of context in this post, congrats. You got it. In the event that you're a socially confused teenager who doesn't want your life to ACTUALLY be like this, I thought I'd like you know how to avoid it in the future. In this case, that would be paying attention to the context of the post, i.e. other boards posts and Meddler's comments about the direction of the item. Were you to do that, you could avoid arguing with strangers on the internet; I personally believe that would be in your best interest, though you are obviously free to disagree.

And now you're being condescending just because you feel superior.

"This post happened in a context that included a lot of other boards posts regarding this item. " Each post stands on it's own. You can't just connect this to any other post and draw your own parallels. That's just not how things work.

So AGAIN, op did not mention literally anything else that would steer towards anything you're saying. I'm not "trolling" because I take a post at face value, and by itself this post said nothing more to me than the previous "This is why it's busted, deal with it" that I have mentioned 40 times now.

Honestly wasn't trying to be condescending. Obviously, the community disagrees with you about your "each post stands on its own" theory. If they did, you wouldn't be seeing so much downvoting and vitriol pointed at you.

I was merely explaining why it happened and how you could avoid it in the future. You are welcome to ignore my advice. I don't like arguing with strangers on the internet, but I know some people do. That's their choice. But, if you are like me, and you don't like arguing with strangers on the internet, I was trying to clue you in about some strategies that you might find effective.

I think it's rude to leave people in the dark on that. You seem confused about how internet forums work, as evidenced by your "each post stands on its own" comment. So, I was trying to "do you a solid" and help you out.

You seem tilted, so I expect you to make a snarky reply to this. But hopefully, the next time you are about to make some kind of pointlessly contrarian post, you will remember my points, and I will help you avoid more downvotes and arguing. That is my kind wish for your life.

"You seem tilted, so I expect you to make a snarky reply to this." Yeah not condescending at all.

I think we're done here.
