Should Tanks, Diving Fighters or Assassins get the last class update of the year?

Sahn Uzal··8 votes·1,902 views

So a while ago, a Rioter (Pretty sure it was Meddler) confirmed there will be another Class update this year, after the mid year mage update. It was also mentioned that this class will most likely be Tanks, Diving fighters or Assassins.

I wanted to have a discussion about this. In this thread, I'll compare the champions in these classes with each other. First off, let's see if these champions have something that makes them unique to the other champions in their class. I'll try not to be biased, and if you disagree with me on anything, please, tell me C; -- Tanks. Sion Sion Sion is a hyper tank with a strong laningphase, he's pretty good at all points of the game for different reasons. Sions numbers are propably really high compared to other champions, but his damage and crowd control is REALLY unreliable. His engage is strong IF he lands it, unstoppable onslaught sets up a nice CC chain IF he travelled long enough. He's also a decent peeler and can take some hits. He does everything ''ok'' but it's nothing in Sions kit is very reliable. But if he does land them every spell is really valuable, even Roar of the slayer. (Will explain if someone asks for it c:) Nautilus Nautilus : THE champion with the most Crowd Controll spells in the game. He has decent engage with Depth Charge (R) While having ''ok'' dueling power as long as his Titans Wrath (W) is up. He also has great peel, his Crowd controll is pretty reliable, His Q has a pretty big hitbox, his ultimate is point and klick while not easy to counter but his Passive is melee ranged. His E is a pretty slow moving slow compared to lets say a Volibears E. Malphite Malphite Malphites engage is godlike. He's also known for being really effective against full AD teams. In terms of crowd control, he has an AoE knockup which is really strong, but other than that he has a slow and an Attackspeed slow. His E has a lot of value in the right situations. To make up for the fact that he only has one Hard CC spell, he can slap clap people for some damage. Maokai Maokai IMO Maokai is the best peeling tank that is not meant as a support. His W is a point and klick snare that can really ruin the day of anyone trying to dive your backline, his Q is almost guarenteed to knock someone up after using his W, his E has a slow... cool. But also provides some free map Vision. And his Ultimate is REALLY strong allthough it drains more mana than this game sucks money out of my wallet. His passive allows him to stay alive for ages unless he gets bursted while his W also allows some sweet playmaking. Zac Zac Zac has a lot of sustain with his blobs, but other than that he is ''ok'' at everything. He can engage a teamfight but why pick Zac for engaging if you can pick Malphite? He can peel for carries, but why pick Zac for peeling when you can pick Maokai or Nautilus? His E is also a pretty unreliable tool, allthough the range on it is really strong. Zac has some things going for him, but he'd really like a class update :P Sejuani Sejuani Does practically what Malphite does. She uses her ultimate as an initiation tool (or prefers to atleast), has some OK damage, and some slows. She has more hard CC than malphite, but is not as reliable. How many times have you seen a Sejuani whiff her ultimate? How many times have you seen a Malphite mis his ultimate? Yeah.... There is no real reason to pick her over Malphite other than when Sejuani is just flat out stronger at that moment. Cho'Gath Chogath Cho'Gath is outdated (and abnoxious IMO). His rupture is strong but unreliable, his W is reliable for bullshit reasons, his e... Who even cares about his E post laningphase? Honestly, he'll either get kited or he'll kill you in one rotation. And then there is his ultimate. This thing deals a ton of damage and gives him a ton of free stats. I believe Cho'Gath is a really strong champion, but just struggles with his outdatedness. He also doesn't really feel like he nails his thematic the way something like Zac or Sion does. Cho'Gath wants to be this whole huge ass kaiju like monstrosity who swings his giant limbs at you, dealing either a ton of damage or misses and does very little. Meanwhile, Vorpal Spike Slapping intensifies Feral scream kinda feels like but rupture feels out of place, But that is just my opinion (Just wanted to give my 2 cents on Cho's fantasy and gameplay) Amumu Amumu Amumu is yet another engage tank with not too much CC other than his ultimate but some ok damage (Crying) to make up for it. The only reason you would ever pick amumu over malphite or Sejuani is because he's simply stronger than them in the meta, or you are low ELO. Mumu dominates low elo. Poppy Poppy Poppy is a pretty unique disruptor. She's a counterpick to most mobile characters and does a great job at peeling. She's also a strong backline diver (not as strong as she used to be but still.) She's got some high damage and high crowd control, she is one of the more unique tanks IMO. Rammus Rammus What on earth does Rammus even do? He taunts people and forces them to kill themselves, he stands there with his ultimate and things die. Rammus is really abnoxious in the right meta/ situations but is not really that good of a champion, his engage is counterable (he just rolls at you with some speed... Yeah...) He fails to really do anything unique other than forcing people to kill themselves. Singed Singed Walking simulator. Propably one of the most toxic kits in the game (hehe). Singed is really unique... I guess, he does something that nobody else does. But I don't know if that's a good thing... Not sure what to say about this laughing bastard :^) Shen Shen Shen is a tank with some crazy cross map pressure, some dueling power and sweet utilty, he has only one Crowd controll spell tho (and that slow if Q goes thru someone...) To put it in Meddlers words, Shen didn't quite hit the mark thematically .I feel like that should be fixable in a class update, but I might be wrong. Other than that, Shen is propably the best tank when you want to camp botlane, but other than that he's not really that unique compared to other tanks.. Leona Leona Leona is a support tank with a great engage and peel. She has a lot of crowdcontrol Alistar Alistar Alistar is a support tank with a great engage, meh peel and one of the best champions for soaking damage without items. Braum Braum Braum is a support tank with pretty good engage and great peel. He can have a lot of CC if he and his team mates apply his passive to a lot of enemies. Tahm Kench TahmKench Tahm Kench is a support tank with AMAZING Peel, but other than that he is a ball of stats. He can roam lanes with his ADC, but that's it kinda Galio Galio Galio is a great anti mage, and would be great at engaging if he could get inrange without flash. Galio is flawed and needs a rework, but in a way he is also pretty unique. Maybe I shouldn't consider him as a tank, but he is listed as one. Blitzcrank Blitzcrank Blitzcrank is unique in the way that he is the most annoying piece of sh- uhm... He's kind of a one trick pony, Hook a person, use the rest of your CC spells (E and R) on them. Or walk up with W, E an enemie and grab afterwards... He's just Blitzcrank. -- Diving Fighters. (Please bear with me here, Some champions might not belong here and some champions are not listed here while they do belong here, The question ''is this champion a diving fighter or not?'' is not as easily awnsered as the question ''is this champion a tank/ assassin?'') Riven Riven Riven is known for her overloaded kit Toxic mains , high skill floor and high skills ceiling. She's a great anti tank while also being able to blow up squishies before they have the time to react (Not because she has Rengar like burst, but because of her hard CC) She has 2 hard CC spells which has a lot of value, she has a lot of damage and mobility while also doing a great job at staying alive with all that lifeteal and her E shield. She is reliant on snowballing though. She does a great job at being unique IMO. Rek'Sai RekSai Rek'Sai has mobility in her own unique way (E) She has a single hard CC spell but does get kited once she used it. She has great damage if she can stay on ya and has a versatile build path. Hecarim Hecarim Hecarim is a champion with a lot of damage, a decent amount of mobility and hard CC (E and R, who both have a long cooldown) Some inbuild healing and whatnot, He's a real pain to deal with once he initiates, but gets bursted quicly once his W runs out. Hecarim is pretty unique but might lack a reason to be picked over other champions unless he's FoTM. Irelia Irelia Known for being really abnoxious to deal with, she has some to a lot of mobility, if she can keep resetting her Q. She has a lot of sustained damage and a bit of burst when she jumps on ya. She punishes you for winning a trade with her E (abnoxious AF) She's hard to peel away because of her passive and hard to take down because of her W and R healing. She does a lot of things, but I feel like she's not really that unique, she does a lot of the things that Riven does, she just can't engage that well on her own (Riven can) and does some things better.. but ya. A baker Pantheon Puntheon deals A TON of damage, has a tool to initiate a teamfight, has point and klick hard CC, he has good burst but lacks sustain damage and bakes some delicious cake. His kit is flawed for sure and would be a candidate for some work. Wukong MonkeyKing Wukong is both unique and not unique in my opinion. His W allows for some cool playmaking, but other than that he dives the backline with his E > Q > R combo and tries to burst you down, now there are more ways to play him but he doesn't really have a reason to be picked over other champions in his class.... Warwick Warwick Press R. There, you know how to play WW. Warwick is extremely simple and telegraphed, He desperadly needs a full VGU. He's a better anti tank than most champs here tho. Vi Vi Has a really really really reliable way to dive the backline and most likely has the damage to kill you aswell. I consider her unique allthough she is flawed (Her ult totally lacks counterplay, even more so than Nautilus' ult) Gnar Gnar is a pretty damn unique champion, he has his ranged form that is used to bully toplane, and his melee form that makes him a great diver with some overlap with the tank class, He's not too strong in the meta but not in need of any rework either IMO. Xin Zhao XinZhao A really simple champion, not really any reason to pick him over Vi, Irelia or whoever unless you are low elo, he tends to dominate there. Aatrox Aatrox THE Diving fighter with the most inbuild sustain. He's a stat check champion who will either die like a bitch or outheal all your damage depending on how ahead he is. He has a cool concept but really deserves a (V?)GU. Aatrox has no real reason to be picked over other champions in his class, which is sad. -- Assassins. (These guys deserve an itemisaton overhaul TBH, mainly the AD assassins.) Diana Diana Rengar Rengar Rengar is a champion who relies on cheesing a guy from stealth. If he fails he'll be useless, if he succeeds he's really abnoxious. He relies on snowballing and is pretty unique allthough he is REALLY problematic. On another thread, I commented saying what I would do if I were to rework Rengar :P Feel free to check it out Kha'Zix Khazix IMO he is the fairest assassin in the game, he relies on his isolation bonus to kill a person and relies on doing his job correctly to get out of that situation. He is the master of versatility (Evolves) and therefore pretty unique IMO. EkkoEkko Ekko is an assasssin with a lot of utitlity, which results in tank ekko being a thing. If he were to get a rework it'd be because of balance, not because of uniqueness. Nocturne Nocturne Nocturne creates chaos like no other. My arms are starting to hurt so I won't go too indepth, but he's very unique but could use some polishing (mainly visually) Kassadin Kassadin THE antimage assassin. He has a history of being problematic and is in an ok (weak-ish) state RN. (If mages were more popular, Kassadin would be stronger aswell.) Nidalee Nidalee ''Relies'' on hitting her long range skillshot (or so she should, Cougar deals a lot of damage no matter what.) She has a ton of damage, ton of poke good utility (Heal, AS bonus and vision/map control with W) She's unique and strong, and I really hope Riot fixes that bullshit where her Takedown (cat Q) still goes off even if you flash away before she even reaches you... Fizz Fizz Allthough he is one of the most annoying champions in the game and I absolutely despise him, he nails his personality of being slippery and hard to catch. FISH. If anything, I feel like he shouldn't be able to kill people with ease even if he's 1 and 9... Zed Zed A lanebully with a really effective in and out. He doesn't have the best of reputations but I feel like he would be one of the fairer assassins if he wasn't as strong. He kinda falls off lategame in a way because itemisation counters him really hard Zed jumps in and out the fight with ease and is pretty unique IMO, His kit isn't as problematic as other assassins but still kinda... eh... Evelynn Evelynn The stealth assassin. In that sense she's pretty unique, but she does really deserve a good amount of work. Visually and gameplay wise. Akali Akali Her W is unique, other than that, she's just really abnoxious and doesn't do anything special. Katarina Katarina THE teamfight snowballing ADC. She has a ton of damage in the right situation and is REALLY unqiue, allthough she does bring a lot of problems. Leblanc Leblanc Leblanc is a lanebully who has some overlap with Zed, but not enough.. Leblanc will anihalte the laningphase and snowball the entire game from there untill she falls off. I disgust her. But that's not relevant here. Shaco Shaco Shaco is the champion for those who want to see the world burn. He has a ton of issues, but those also make him who he is. Idk if Riot should touch him... Talon Talon Talon is the least unique assassin IMO. He has a ton of overlap with other assassins and is only really played when FOTM. -- So who do you guys think should get the last class rework? Do you guys agree with the things I said about these champions? Pleast let me knwo in the comments, What do you like about X champion? Let's give Riot as much information as we can ;)

I'd say assassins warrant the most urgent changes out of the three classes. Tanks have never been in the best spot, but their biggest issues come from not being as enjoyable as they could be, and not so much annoying to play against (though that occasionally happens), and it would help them a lot if they just received more tailored items, even if tank champions need some tweaks too. The main problem with diving fighters mostly boils down to diversity (or lack of it), and while there are also counterplay problems, they're doing decently otherwise. Assassins, however, have fundamental gameplay problems that affect their enjoyment and the enjoyment of people playing against them, along with fairly poor diversity of outputs and itemization.

Point is, Riot has absolutely no idea what to do with assassins, even if they don't admit it openly.

There is a good reason why last assassin in classical meaning of the word was released 3,5 years ago, while in the mean time we got like 6 marksmen, 4 mages, 5 supports... Only thing they plan for assassin update is increasing diversity, i.e. making Diana less of Akali, and Rengar Talon and Zed less of each other.

If they knew how to make an assassin without serious game health issues, they would release one already.

Unpopular opinion here, but Ekko could be a pretty healthy assassin, if he weren't so strong with a tanky build. Sure, he's got too much going on in his kit, and does a lot of stuff an assassin normally shouldn't, but his core playstyle of diving in, picking off targets and getting out is fairly healthy (when he's either squishy or forced to commit for much longer to take out enemies, neither of which currently apply to him). In a League where assassins had proper individual niches, he'd be the assassin you'd pick for additional CC and flexibility as opposed to, say, Katarina for AoE or Kassadin for roaming power.

I think the core design problem Riot has had trouble tackling with assassins, aside from wondering what the hell an assassin is meant to do in the first place, is figuring out how to make assassins fulfill their core fantasy (i.e. jump in, burst down a target, jump out) in a manner that's both healthy and successful. Kha'Zix is a mostly healthy assassin because he puts himself at risk when trying to take down targets, but he's unsuccessful because he takes too long to kill people, and Akali's mostly successful, but unhealthy due to how her innate sustain lets her become nigh-unkillable as she bursts down targets. Zed is repeatedly touted as the healthiest and most successful assassin around, but he's also hated due to how countering him feels mostly like it boils down to rushing Zhonya's and playing super-safe early on, instead of outplaying him on the spot.

Currently there's also the whole tanky assassin problem on top of that: give assassins terrible bases and high scalings, and you make them feast-or-famine, and even more binary than they already are, but give assassins higher bases and lower scalings, and they end up bursting targets with a tanky build. There are also cases of "assassins" like Diana, Rengar and Akali naturally functioning more like bursty bruisers than "real" assassins, which messes things up even further. Part of this comes from itemization, and I'm becoming more and more convinced that health should probably work as an amplifier to base values, rather than a flat stat (with compensation given to tanky champions if needed, obviously), but part of this also comes from the fact that most assassins can only really do one thing, and they all do the same thing (namely, lots of burst damage + mobility).

At this point, we've reached a stage where every champion gets to contribute at least one thing besides damage and personal mobility, and even though assassins should probably remain the most selfish, lone wolf-y class in the game, they should each be able to provide interesting new effects that still remain within the assassin archetype, but add to it and their team (we don't really have any kind of a saboteur assassin, for example, or a thief or a proper scout, even if all of those would make for valid assassin champions). Not only would this help assassins contribute even when behind, but it could also give enemies more opportunities to outplay them besides never letting their squishies get caught alone.

I'd prefer tanks, but assassins are a bit toxic imo and need some changes.

Big Lincoln3 votes

tanks as a whole aren't that healthy either

Ralanr3 votes

I never said they were healthy, I just think assassins are less so.

warpenguin5553 votes

Assassins for sure. As much as Riot likes to say every champion should have meaningful counterplay most assassins are so old that they just don't outside of ccing them which is the counter to all champions but like 5. on top of all that, I can't really say there is an assassin that is fun to play against. Who would you even give that to? Nocturne maybe?

Most assassins don't even do different things or even have much of a thematic difference. For example, how would you describe Kat to somebody who doesn't play league alot? Blade assassin probably. You know who else is just blade assassin? Talon

Try akali. Ninja. Just like Zed and Shen. Shens not even an assassin either lol.

Leblanc doesn't even match her deceiver title very well. Her passive and w are her only actual tricks ult can do it too kinda but not always. Q and E are just kinda there. Plus Shaco beats her at her own game in every way thematic wise. i could keep going but it's kinda not needed.

After assassins then we should go into divers. Divers are just barely less frustrating than assassins and a few champions like Nocturne and Rengar are actually seen as both by Riot so they could get minor stuff in the assassin update and if that's not really working well they fit with the divers too so why not try again?

Sahn Uzal1 votes

I'm not gonna lie, I'd love to see Rengar as a Diving fighter :p But I'm propably in the minority for that one. summoner 31

Nameless Voice2 votes

I vote for assassins. They are the ones who tend to have the most obnoxious kits with the least counterplay. An assassin that people consider "healthy" is usually one who is underpowered, rather than one with a well-designed kit.

Some of the diving fighters have similar problems, but I don't feel that they need work quite as badly.

I think tanks are mostly fine. They could do with a smaller-scale class rework to help differentiate some of them, but overall I think that they are in the best place of those three groups.

Zalinthel2 votes

Frankly, if assassin's were looked at, Kassadin would almost certainly be one of the priorities, given his history. Kassadin's issues stem from his original kit intent (a melee carry with spells to stick to and stop retalliation from casters to stab them up) and his primary character-defining ability (his ult and its nearly unparalleled in-combat mobility) conflicting harshly with his actual gameplay patterns (blink in->stupid burst->Blink out).

For him to be allowed to be strong and to be healthy for the game, he'd need to be moved towards an auto-attack, sustained damage pattern and his kit would have to be adjusted accordingly to allow him to do so and keep his ultimate (which, honestly, is super fun to use, and it'd be a shame to scrap it.)

Divewing1 votes

His ultimate is the reason he's so toxic and hard to balance, like katarinas reset gimmick. There's multiple champions with toxic abilities that may never be changed because "muh thematics", even though it's the main thing stopping them from being healthy.

It should be decided after the Mage update depending on which class needs it the most after it.

Sahn Uzal1 votes

I'm not sure if the mage update would change anything here, after all, these updates are not ''this class is too weak and we want to buff them'' It's about giving every champion their own place in the game. summoner 31

Meep Man1 votes

True, true. It's just opinions about whether a champion has a place can change a lot with big updates so Im waiting till 6.9.

Big Lincoln1 votes

There is no real reason to pick her over Malphite other than when Sejuani is just flat out stronger at that moment.

easy

sejuani has infinitely more presence after using her ult than malphite does. malphite can permaslow one person at a time; Sejuani can consistently slow everyone she's touched in the last 4 seconds.

Her problem is that after the latest Gragas buffs, it's become a three way tie amongst them and Amumu all fighting for mostly the same niche, with the biggest difference in reason to pick them being their ults. Since Riot, for some fucking reason, has decided that Gragas having Sejuani's damage (and the AoE, because he can eat his cake, too) while having a particularly powerful defensive steroid is fine, while Sejuani has yet to see re-buffs, it would be a good idea to rework all three of them so that they can have more defined differences and we can see them more often instead of just "who's best."

Sahn Uzal1 votes

I'm not saying Sejuani has nothing over Malphite. To give you an example, Graves and Lucian were very similar champions before the marksman update (atleast in Riots eyes.) There were differences, but not enough, so Graves got those changes that... didn't quite make him balanced, but it did make him and lucian unique compared to each other. summoner 31

sejuani is more similar to amumu and gragas

i dont think tanks actually need a large update.

i mean there are most of the healthiest champions in there. none of them is even close broken or as problematic to balance as champions like eve, leblanc, or kassadin.

at worst, some of the tanks are very nieche. like galio for example. but i still dont think his kit terribly designed to actually warrant a large rework.

at worst he needs some scaling changes from ap to hp so he can be more relevant in scenarios where hes not up against full ap teamcomps. but thats it imo.

Support role.

supports got updates at the start of almost every season...

while the whole deal with the utility scaling made them kindof weird and item dependent even though they dont have a lot of ap items available, theyre really not in a bad spot overall anymore.

the only supports i think would need updates are sona, and theyre still working on soraka.

Pandemic Punch1 votes

Exp gained is way too low. Itemization is awful for supports who have to try to carry their team. Support role also feels way more expensive this season than it did last season. That might have to do with the minion pushing changes and the faster pace of the game.

Ralanr1 votes

Which is more odd when you consider the gold income increase as a whole and with that mastery.

I agree that it seems really expensive to play a support (but they aren't meant to be item reliant champions) but I can't understand why.

Support role.

I made a thread about how the support role won't see a Champion update, instead it'll see individual updates such as Taric.

However what would make for a good support role update is a Support Item Rework. I made a thread about that too but...meh, nobody really cares about supports.

Did the mexicans pay for that wall?

Anyway back on topic, Just gonna put this out then read k. As much as i love tanks to be updated, and as much as i want assassins to be a more functional better balanceable class

I really think it should be diving fighters.

because generally they are point & click easymode stat checkers which is kind of lame ill name one example, Irelia shes like the definition of a ball of stats. Literally no real interaction when playing vs this type of champion other then can he kill me? yes? avoid like the plague. If answer was no, bully them around.

I've felt, as of late, that it has less to do with specific sections of the champion pool and more to do with their itemization options. There is almost no cohesiveness between the stats that several items give and the unique effect tacked onto them, the rock-paper-scissors aspect of the game as far as sustained damage/tankiness/burst damage seems to have been completely set aside to the point where half the melee hypercarry pool is just building tank so they can indescriminately kill anyone come lategame, and the AP itemization options are either prohibitive to build or just completely out of whack. I am 100% positive that, once Riot stops balancing the entire champion pool around a faulty set of items then LOL players will see more meaningful and satisfying changes in the future.

Moving the Zhonya active over to an expensive but worthwhile HP item so that more champions could potentially make use of it--instead of tacking it onto an unwieldly AP item that happens to be the only armor-item most mage can build while keeping their AP up to par--would be a great start. So would reworking Lyandri so that the %HP burn tick isn't completely lost on the gold-inefficiency of having to buy HP/flat magic-pen against someone who probably has a sizeable pool of MR in the first place. Or moving the GW effect of Morellocon over to something that wasn't a mana-regeneration item, so that it isn't lost on champions who don't have mana issues while simultaneously ensuring that it isn't the go-to rush item for the currently-powerful mages like AhriVelkozMorgana--who benefit way too much from the otherwise perfect harmony of stats the item offers when bought early on. Or maybe Riot could rethink the possible impact of implementing an item that gives a gold-efficient and very stat-synergistic MR+AD+flat-arpen+shield combination to aid in the killing of Champions who are already struggling enough. It all seems very goofy to me.

assassins because they need to fix some of them

Quepha1 votes

Divers need it the most with how indistinct they all. It almost always feels like only one or two of them are remotely viable (and they often feel OP while they do it) and every other champ in the class feels like total garbage.

But Assassins might still be the better choice for the rework so that Riot can have a warmup on how to distinguish mobile damage focused champions from each other before they work on the divers which are basically Assassins but tanky.

Baby Ghoul1 votes

A support rework is necessary.

Constantly putting bandaids on the situation each season is not going to cut it anymore. The support role and concept is outdated in this game, and basically no one is playing it anymore.

We actually need to sit down and take a meaningful look at where the support role is now, and what we want it to be in the future, just like we did with the other role updates. A lot of people don't believe that supports impact the game, but they do, so it's just as important that they get the same amount of **quality **attention other roles have gotten.

Supports can no longer remain an afterthought.

An assassin update seems like a waste of time. Assassins should be niche picks because the only thing they offer to a team is the chance for more kills. Not every game needs that, and we all know that KDA isn't the biggest factor when it comes to winning the game.

They are champions that thrive on disorganized teams, which is fine, but anytime we try to add a form or reliability into their kits they become too oppressive because we have no way to counterplay.

They must remain feast or famine or we must make a decision to delete that role from the game. You can play against a fed feast or famine champion because you know they're going to be looking for out of position players to delete, especially if they're on a killing spree.

High utility or defensive builds should never be a thing on assassins.

Gigahappytown1 votes

assassins need the rework the most, all but 2 of them play the exact same way and do the exact same thing with little to no counterplay.

also riven is a skirmisher not a dive fighter.
