Why do some champions attract some player behaviour?

Taliyah Rocks··31 votes·3,430 views

Sure i don't want to generalize, champion played does not dictate player behaviour, but there certainly is a correlation.

It has been shown that Riven ragequit almost twice as often as the second champion with the most ragequit Mordekaiser

RivenMordekaiserMasterYiVayneShaco tend to be salty ragers LeeSinLuxKatarinaZedYasuo are often really cocky TeemoBardIvernSinged are either realllyyy salty or very laidback who play for fun Players who main FotM champs will often rage whenever someone picks something off-meta or unconventionnal.

That's just a short list but i still find it curious. Shouldn't players play the champs they enjoy? But it seems that some players with specific behaviours are attracted to specific champions.

I dont know what your talking about. I am never toxic. I dont rage or belittle other people for any reason.

As we all know, Riven mains are paragons of virtue. All hail Automated Riven!

Automated Riven1 votes

and this is likely why rivens are toxic. because this is the attitude that they are treated with in game.

True story. the first 4 months when I was playing riven I got hardcore raged at and told to uninstall and so on all the time because I didnt know how to play her at a decent level yet. I still get raged at if I win lane for playing a braindead faceroll champ or if I lose lane sometimes (albiet less now that I changed my name to riven) so I can understand why people who have a temper can lose their cool if they deal with that for months on end while they try to learn a new champ.

50000000000000001 votes

Yeah, self fulfilling prophecy and all :/ tbh I thought you were joking, since your name makes it clear that you're a Riven main, and stereotypical Riven mains are...basically the opposite of what you said you do.

Automated Riven2 votes

Well i agree that stereotypes typically exist because there is something to start them. but I wasnt kidding about never raging. I havent had so much as a chat ban since I started playing league in season 1. XD

What I've noticed on average...

Supports an Toplaners tend to be the calmer people on the team that just want to focus on the game. Sometimes they don't even speak. When he's quiet, everyone forgets about the toplaner until halfway through the game when he appears.

Midlaners and Adcs are the ones most likely to flame other people about their kda. More easily "triggered" by missing CC or not playing the way they want you to.

Junglers tend to either be more toplaner/support-ish or midlaner/adc-ish in that they either are toxic or they are quiet. For Junglers it's like a spectrum. Usually lean towards one side of the spectrum, not many people smack in the middle.

Now these are just averages, I've seen people that don't fit them

Some champs I've noticed trends with Yasuo MasterYi = Cocky as hell

Vayne Riven = Usually the most toxic toplaner and botlaners. Easy to tilt.

Champs with funny emote spams that usually spam them to bm = Alistar Darius Blitzcrank Nami Ezreal Zed

Imma stop you right there at top laners. In my experience, along with games I've watched on streams, if a top laner picks a carry there is a very high chance they will flame the jungler if they start losing lane.

50000000000000001 votes

This reminds me of the game yesterday... Our trynd pushed in enemy kennen constantly, and consequently got camped. After two deaths he invaded the enemy jungle alone, and got collapsed on. He proceeded to take my entire jungle, and pretty much all the lanes. He ended with over 300 CS.

The top laners i get are the ones that start raging after they die one time even when the rest of the team is massacring the other four enemy players and taking objectives.

It's the same as any online game really. DPS classes tend to attract the most obnoxious players, especially if it has a "high-skillcap."

it's not confirmation bias when theres actual data showing the amount of leaves for each champion

I guess Morde mains are second most toxic? That data is not only ancient. But doesn't prove who is most toxic, only who afks most.

He didnt say they were toxic he said they were salty ragers. Which is probably true You dont rage quit the game without raging or being salty

That 420 blaze it 12 year old keyboard warrior isn't going to pick Malphite to show off his superior mechanics. He's gonna pick something like Riven Yasuo .

I play Katarina , and I often feel like if we just play a teamfight correctly, I can just win it for my team. That's just the nature of the champion.

These are the champs we enjoy

That statistic has been correct for a day 3 years ago. Back when op.gg showed leaveratio (until half a year ago) I debunked this stupid graph so often. Actually it's Nunu that has consistently placed first in leaveratio, Riven was top 3 in NA, top 5 in EU and top 40 in KR - but not even close to such a tremendous leaveratio.

Other than that it's mostly stereotypes. Sure, feast/famine champions might attract toxic behaviour somewhat more often, but not that much: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EfbEHgdJKFuatjejJiYr94tG_tYJx2Ry90NR_NqfUHk/edit#gid=0 (it's old but we don't have better data - I guess the difference between most toxic - average toxic should remain about the same)

I was about to comment on reading this that the Morde ragequit rate could vary wildly depending on how salty you and MM are on a particular day.

I really wish that stigma on Riven weren't true. I hate getting flamed every time I lock in Riven or even mention that I pay Riven here on the boards simply because of how other people behave while playing Riven.

Automated Riven1 votes

the thing is that it really isnt true. I havent seen a riven rage in almost a year. the one I saw that 1v5ed my team didnt even bm after the penta. Its just because people cant deal with a champ styling on them.

Shadòw1 votes

Well while i really want to believe that there are non toxic Riven mains out there, i have not seen one yet in a losing game.

Everytime i have a lvl7 Riven in team she is either toxic from the start or neutral/positive first but the moment a throw happens she starts flaming the entire team and it goes downhill from them.

while I know there are non toxic Riven players out there, she is one of the 2 champions where i can't remember ever having a main in my team in a losing game that wasn't even a bit negative.

i just think that her playstyle and snowbally nature tends to mostly attract this kind of people.

Automated Riven1 votes

well I never rage. and I play riven because its one of the champs I know that if I am the only one behind I can still contribute and still force my way back in. so maybe someday you might have me on your team and then you can say you had one positive riven XD

Great Muta2 votes

Yasuo players are bar none the worst players in the game. No idea why either when they have the most loaded kit to work with.

Sexy Jack Rabbit2 votes

I mean tbh, LeeSin Lux Katarina Zed Yasuo MasterYi Shaco are all amongst some of the most popular champions in the entire game.

Whilst I don't disagree that some champions seem to attract different mindsets, champions being popular means you are going to see more of them, and as a result a lot more toxic people playing them.

I also think it's because when a champion is a little bit more mechanically challenging or risky, like some of the champions you listed, people are lot more prone to be frustrated or work themselves up when playing them.

I know I tend to get a lot more upset when I'm playing Katarina as opposed to when I'm playing Karma, as Katarina honestly requires that I focus a little bit more then when I am playing Karma. If I mess up as Kat I get annoyed because I KNOW I could have won that fight/game or gotten that objective, but I mis-positioned once, got CC'd and died. I get annoyed because if I HADN'T of messed up there the opposite might of happened. Whereas when playing as Karma, I don't tend to work myself up as much as messing up once isn't nearly as detrimental. (I chose these two champions specifically because I play both moderate amounts without considering myself a main of either.)

JIDF Operative1 votes

I guess it is the nature of the champs kits? Champs like riven and yi are really hard to do well with when behind and it may cause the main to tilt because they no their champs limitations. For people who play champs like zed, Lee and yas they may be cocky because they are used to getting out of sticky situations and killing many people with their champs. Also I find your list pretty accurate except for Morde and Shaco lol. Morde because no one ever plays him in my games and shaco because most shaco mains I have had on my teams have been really nice.

The Sword Saint5 votes

Pretty much.

People do play the champions they find fun. What OP is talking about though is actually the influence that experience on those champions tends to have on the players. Going by the OP's examples: champions that easily snowball one way or the other based on minor things that they may or may not have control over in a match can make someone turn bitter and cynical over time, champions who always seem to have 3 ways to survive when shit goes south tend to feel safe to the point of 'cockiness', and champions with weird derpy kits that force people to play the entire game differently are tempted to dick around with their gimmicky champion and so can end up either having fun no matter what or being super angry that their gimmicks are being hard countered depending on mood.

So what is the stereotype surrounding Vladimir and Viktor mains?

PaladinNO1 votes

I agree somewhat. It's true that the very sight of Vayne angers me, but that's because, in my experience, most Vayne mains are [censored]. As you say. Riven players are usually predictable. I've found that the skin used decides their attitude. Battle Bunny is usually for the tryharders (so they don't say all that much), whereas no skin or Dragonblade tends to lean towards the cocky/raging side.

Regarding Shaco: Never mind the players; his very existence tilts me! Not made better by the fact that a friend knew this, and made me witness "[X] has summoned you a gift!", including the message "time to play shaco!!!" I thanked him, and told him how much I hated him. His response was spontanious laughter. :(

Out of sheer curiosity, what's your view of Lulu and/or Nami players?

woodvsmurph1 votes

Some champs are still useful when behind or can easily catch up - others cannot easily catch up, are completely useless, and/or have blown any potential to carry due to being early game champs. Riven and morde are more awful than many other champs when put behind - way less useful than say galio, malphite, soraka renekton, darius, kalista, lucian (in some matchups) lose out on their carry potential when put way behind early game because they do not scale to the same extent as other champs and/or are more easily punished for being behind.

Ex: think of playing lucian into cait or jinx who is a bf sword ahead of you in laning phase - you are going to get poked out so hard and either miss tons more xp and cs or die, miss tons of xp, miss tons of cs. Not a pleasant scenario.

There are people who ask/ping/yell/whine/whatever for ganks for different reasons. Why depends on: elo, player. Higher elo or a good player will ping because there is either the opportunity for an easy kill or tower objective if the jungler will gank or... because they have been focused a bunch and NEED immediate help in order to not get put impossibly behind where they will basically be a free kill any time they go to lane - even under tower. A good jungler should be able to look at lanes, hp bars, minion waves, champ movements around the map, etc. and determine where the optimal place(s) to gank is. It might change depending on the time of the game (4 min, 10 min, 20 min, etc.) and the champs being played.

Ultimate Deadpoo1 votes

Its a combination of a Champion's kit and lore.

For example, us Rengar mains are a bunch of bloodthirsty sociopaths whose only goal in life is to have the most kills of any champion in the game. This is because Rengar's kit, specifically bonetooth necklace encourages this kind of behavior and his lore as a hunter makes us want to hunt down and kill every champion on the enemy team as much as possible.

We also hate Kha'Zix mains.
