Veigar, Then and Now, OP Conception and Counterplay, and What I Think Could be Done

This post is long but please bear with me.

What is this post about?

This post is about, in my opinion, how the all the recent changes to Veigar since his "rework", "compensation", "gutting", or whatever you want to call it, have led us to this "Veigar op" and "no-counterplay" problem that is causing one of my favorite champions to be near perma-banned in all my games, and what I think could round him out. As a Veigar player, I will admit, he currently has some power/counterplay problems (not the "rito I got one-shot plz nerf" problems), and I will explain them later.

Who am I?

I'm not a new player, nor am I a veteran. I started playing in September 2014. Veigar was the 1st champion I purchased with my ip and has remained one of my favorite champs since I 1st played him. Currently I only play ranked and am at Plat2, and I've used Veigar off and on since I began in bronze. I'm only stating this so it is known that I'm not claiming to be a Veigar god or or anything, I'm just showing that I know the champion.

Power and Counterplay Before:

1st off, before the nerf his E was instant and had a shorter range, his Q was point-and-click with a shorter range, his W had a flat 10cd, and his ult had a higher ap ratio. Most people would say is the biggest difference between then and now is his E no longer being instant, I disagree. Veigar's Q being a shorter range and point-and-click spell caused two things. First, he was never safe to just Q farm from a distance. Second, he could be played as a lane bully instead of Q stacking. Also because of the Q range being fairly short, his E had to be instant to provide security in lane or he would just die to anyone or just never get any farm. The counterplay to this in lane was that when Veigar's E was down, he was extremely vulnerable because of his short range. The main issue with this in lane, was that if Veigar reached a snowball he could just Q R without needing to stun which was sometimes an issue. The problem mainly came when he left the lane and teamfights would begin. The reason was not necessarily the stun, but the combination of the stun with the zoning effect his E brought. This combo is what led to him being played as a support and got him nerfed, and I won't deny that it was op.

What the Changes to Veigar Have Caused:

The biggest problem that the changes have caused is that they made Veigar "safe". What I mean by this is that he can easily just sit back and farm with his Q until late-game (against most matchups). This removes a lot of "counterplay" to his stacking in lane. Now we have to ask, "Why is he more safe now then before?". The answer is obvious. Because his E received a delay, it was no longer a reliable form of security in lane for the player, so to compensate for that, Veigar's Q was given more range and the ability to farm more then 1 minion at a time. The Q range also made his team fighting more safe as well. The counter to this is, in lane, is that it completely removed his ability to act as a lane bully forcing him into this stack for late-game role. The delay on his E also caused a small buff in the zoning area. The delay effectively extends the E's duration trading stun accuracy for extended zoning, and also gives your team more time to react to your play. The range on the E was also slightly increased. In short, what made his E strong in lane was removed and replaced with Q farm safety, while what made his E strong in the late, zoning, was very slightly buffed.

What I Think Could Be Changed:

Obviously I don't know if this would truly be best and I don't think Riot will ever change Veigar again, but if they did, this is what I would love to see attempted. I would change his Q so that the range would be shorter, but longer then pre-nerf, and I would leave it as a skillshot. I would have the Q be able to hit 1 minion and 2 champions and would not disappear unless both happened. The W I would leave the same. For his E I would return it to its original state, being instant, but the cage would only last for 0.5 seconds. For Veigar's ult I would remove the enemy ap ratio and increase his own, but for some reason some people consider that a part of his identity so it could stay as it is. All numbers, ranges, and cd's aren't known, the concept is what matters. They would be tuned for balance but, not being able to test myself, I don't know what those numbers are, I'm assuming close to what they are now.

Why I Think These Are Good Changes:

I believe that more power should be given to the player controlling the champion and decrease its reliance on others. This is the main reason for my E change. I would give Veigar his stun but remove its zoning effect. In my opinion, the threat of Veigar using it is enough to zone in certain situations. This along with the Q change gives him the opportunity to choose between lane bully and Q farm. In a few cases both would be possible when the other laner positions poorly. The range nerf on his Q would decrease his initial safety and put more reliance on the players positioning and ability to use his E accurately. Remember that there is no long term cage. If Veigar misses, he has a problem, and when it's on cd he still has a problem. Because his E is less forgiving, his Q remains a longer range then pre-nerf and can't be minion blocked, only champion blocked. The combo of this Q and E puts more emphasis on the players skill rather than relying on his team to capitalize on the cage. Before the Q op cry, countering is simple. Simply don't line up with a low health minion and you make him choose between Q farm or harass and you can move up to attack after he uses it because it will be telegraphed.

Why am I Posting This?

Idk, I just kinda felt like it. Plus the idea of a 0.00000001% chance of actually influencing a Veigar change is somewhat appealing.

If you read this full post thanks, and if you haven't please do before commenting as I might have addressed your issue in the post.

Edit:

I forgot to mention that I do not believe Veigar is currently op, but he is strong. My only problem with him directly is that he is much less fun and interactive to play as then before. Plus he keeps getting banned so I can't play him.

I disagree, he is fine as he is right now. Assassins do the same thing that veigar does and people don't call for assassins to be removed. Veigar can kill one or two people instantly, and then has to wait for cooldowns before he can do anything again. He is the oppostie of what ekko was trying to be. Veigar is an utility assassin, instead of an assassin with utility. People just need to learn how to play against him and he will be useless again. Picking talon, or zed and building some MR, will render him useless.

I don't mind this idea. I've never had a problem with Veigar personally (playing as him or playing against him). Your idea isn't crazy. I like.

The cage changes are in completely the wrong direction imo That essentially just turns it into a targeted stun with a high skill floor (like it was before, but without even the cage element) What happened to Veigar trapping you in a cage?

On that note, however, I don't like how much Veigar relies on his E to function.

They're nerfing the base damage on his Q and W on the PBE. I like this, since he reduces any harass he manages to put on in lane, and reduces his chance of a kill without a gank. His lategame scaling remains intact though.
