Simply put, we need a new role "random" that just picks roles at random for you. This allows variety for those who enjoyed playing "fill" before new champ select. "Fill" can still be used for those who want faster queue times.
Incredibly simple and stupid, but I would use it.

Edit: I'm not being a smartass, but that's seriously the best solution. I mean, sure, they could go ahead and take the time to add a random option, but the random option would literally be rolling an internal dice to decide what role to give you, then queuing up for that.

I'm assuming you responded to someone who told you to choose random roles for yourself... If that's the case, your reply isn't a very good one as I'm 90% sure that most people use Pandora for the same reasons I do.

The naïve Fill approach isn't good enough, and Riot has admitted it. A solution needs to be developed, not adapted by individual players.

Since everyone is picking support now as one of his possible roles, queue times are way down, and noone can complain about always having to support (unless, you know, he conciously picks support).

In the meantime I take a 4 sided die and role it twice (1 = top, 2 = jungle, 3 = mid, 4 = ADC.) If I get the same number twice I make my secondary role fill (and we all know fill = support.) Crude but it works.

"Random" would assign you a role within a team at random, and your queue time would reflect how long you'd need to wait until the system found you a group with that spot open. Thus, if the system assigned you the role of Mid or Top, your queue-time would reflect how long it would take to get that position if that was what you'd queued for from the very beginning.
"Fill" would search the list of open parties that need a role filled that has not yet been filled and assign you that role. It's still the fastest queue, because you're filling in for the very next available party, regardless of what role they need, but that role is still probably gonna be Support, since people don't like playing Support...

Hardstuck G41 votesIt's not random. You fill whatever role is needed by your team at the time. So if your team has a Top, ADC, Jungler, and Support, you'll get mid. If they lack a support, you get support. If you lack a top laner, you get top. etc.

KevinDelMarr1 votesGood luck on queue times. To be truly random, you would need to be paired with other randoms. Or else random becomes support/bot because matchmaking gives up after trying to find an open spot that doesn't include Bot Lane.

I don't fill, I main supports, but often times a clueless fill will get support and perform poorly at it when I could've support. Hell, even I'd take Fill more often if I could null out Jungle. I'm terrible at jungling. AWFUL. I can do anything but. D:
