Can someone please explain new Ryze to me?

I shit bricks whenever I see this blue menace. Knowing your enemy is half the battle, and I usually end up playing too passive or missing his downtime because of it.

This is what I know so far:

His Q is the skillshot ball that seems to go 10 times further than it shows. His W is the same as always, the shitty ass snare that lasts forever. His E gives you squiggles that seem to be Leblancs passive. His R is a group teleport. Probably the worst Ultimate in the game.

Somewhere in here he has a shield and movespeed, but I don't know how or where it comes from, or the cooldown on it.

How do they all interact with eachother? Does his new kit have any downtime? How does he spread his runes?

It just seems to be a machine gun of blue looking skills that do high damage. What do you guys do when laning against him? What do you look out for?

When I finally work this guy out, they rework him.

EDIT: This is a serious post, not a complaint. I usually beat Ryze, I just don't know how. When I lose to him, I don't know why. I would like to change that

Have you ever tried....playing him?

Basically you have to understand that ryze is a slow but relentless menace.

-He starts as 0.4 of a champion -Becomes 0.5 of a champion when he gets tear -Becomes a 1.0 of a champion (can fight when even/ahead/numbers advantage) at lv 6 -He becomes a 4.0 or even more accordingly to how much he's fed farmed up when he starts to stack up items, aka: a fucking nightmare

He has 4 combos -The damage combo -The sustain combo -The CC combo -The aoe combo

His damage combo starts as a single target combo and if the fights goes on he transforms it in the aoe combo, so ideally you want to shut him down as soon as possible but you have to take care for his sustain combo, as he can just barrier all your damage and bait it.

Outside fights you always want to pressure him, aka pushing his wave, so even if he can oneshot it he will be somewhat slowed down, in fights it's all about engaging and positioning.

A skilled and experienced ryze after he has built his tear won't go for the ROA, but he will rush morello instead to benefit from the cdr, if they go roa it means that they want to fight you, and not focus on their wave, punish that by either pushing all the way under turret or asking for ganks, as he's really vulnerable in that stage.

I suggest to both watch his champion spotlight and youtube some replays, especially bjergsen, faker, pobelter and apdo as they're top of the best mid laners around and their replays are pretty easy to find as well. And as bjerg himself said: you don't learn how to play against ryze until you master him yourself.

The ideal ryze build should be this one

item 3158 item 3003 item 3165 item 3030 item 3135 --- item 3089 / item 3157 / item 3001 with an emphasis on zhonya

That's actually a good idea, thanks..

if he casts E or W two times before he uses Q, then the next Q will give him a shield and movespeed. This is basically if he uses EW, WE or EE.

Does his new kit have any downtime?

Not really, no. He's gated mostly by how much he can smash his keyboard before he runs OOM. His cooldowns are very low.

That's what it looks and feels like, but I can't help but think if a champ who was only gated by player speed existed, the boards would be hating on them instead of Yasuo.

His E has a tiny cooldown, and his Q cooldown is reset whenever he casts E. However, his W (root) does have a large (~10s) nonreduceable cooldown.

W is a short root if he casts it first. If you're marked with Spell Flux from his E, then the root duration increases a lot. So his root shouldn't be rooting you forever in sudden engages, and he can't keep doing it.

he is the same as old ryze but with more wave clear, more early power, and he doesn't need his ult to wipe the floor with people

His spell flux basically empowers all of his other abilities.

what you wanna do on ryze is basically power farm by spreading the spell flux to surrounding enemies/champs then fire off an overload at any of the fluxed targets for double damage to all of the fluxed targets.

The Ulti isn't really worth levelling early, many would even argue that its even useless in lane pre 20mins.

His W Rune prison is basically his only defensive skill and it has the longest cd at like 11-9 seconds so that is your best opportunity to engage.

How does he spread it?

How does he spread it?

spell flux spreads when an already spell fluxed minion is killed via another of ryze's abilities OR if he spell fluxes that particular minion again. That is the most important thing to note: don't stand near a creep wave when laning.

early game, harrass him before he recalls to get mana items, he runs out of mana quickly, sustain will be good against him
