Am I the only person who likes ARURF?

It wasn't stale..

Regular URF was garbage.. always the same champs, it made summoners rift look incredibly diverse.

It was nice seeing lots of different champs :)

Played ARURF a few times, ended up in a bot lane as bot lane Kass/Ez against an Irelia/Kog.

Ended up getting roflstomped by Irelia's like massively reduced and amped damage with her Qs.

Couple games later, got to do the same thing in return as I got Irelia.

5/7, would play again.

ARURF seems to make it more random with not seeing some massive 5 man coordinated shenanigans with all OP URF champs, and allows you to try stuff you normally wouldn't because you had to play the absolute best or lose.

Or you know, not care too much about winning and have fun that you can basically perma shield on some champions cough, Karma

All depends on your playstyle!

John Senna11 votes

From your experience, what is worst here, facing irelia, who becomes virtually unkillable thanks to Q, W, R or karma, who is annoying to the extreme?

Hyperiön4 votes

Zed is more troublesome than both of those champs together. xD

I just want the option to make a custom game with regular URF. I wanna play with my friends and play the champion I want to have fun with. ARURF is fine for a public queue, but in private it's just not fun being forced on to a champion.

Dr Poro4 votes

I 100% agree with this. URF customs should be available for those who want to play a specific champ. I really really like ARURF, but at the end of the weekend I usually have the feeling like "oh, I wish I could've played this champ for once".

The amazingness of ARURF is that it let's you enjoy champions you never expected that you'd enjoy. Singed was hilarious! A friend of mine also succeeded well with on-hit braum :)

Some of the most fun I've had in URF were games that I ultimately lost. I played full AP Janna mid twice and got almost 20 kills both times just permashielding and AAing and had a blast. I played Leona support and had the entire enemy team complaining about me (While roflstomping my team). Also lost that game. But had a ton of fun. Lost a bunch of games to xins and irelia, but also got to 1v5 pentakill on irelia and be unkillable on Mundo. It evened out and was way more fun than regular URF with its 10 op picks every game.

Thank you! I was absolutely sick of seeing Lux Teemo Shaco Riven Morgana Yasuo and whoever else was broken in every. Single. Goddamned. Match. 3 bans/team just isn't enough to remove the broken ones. This at least makes the odds equal.

People whine about it removing the "fairness", since they can't always get a champion they know. Ignoring the fact that you have up to two rerolls at once, and you get one every other match, also ignoring the fact that the enemies have the same chance of getting a champion they don't know, and ignoring the fact that they can trade with allies…

Seriously. The diversity saved URF. It was better for there to at least be a chance that there were no permastun/blind/snare champions. Even if I didn't get to play all the champions I like, I still at least had fun.

EDIT: Alright! For the love of god! I get it! Yasuo isn't that good in URF!

Wylderthanu43 votes

I don't understand how you can say yasuo is op in urf. He gets little benefits from this gamemode. Almost every champ can shit on yasuo in urf. Also lux isn't that broken in urf. Since she can't perma snare you like morgana can.

Agreed. I faced both of these champions (multiple times--random is a misleading descriptor, since each player's champion pool is different), and found them pretty easy to deal with this time. Lux's laz0r really bites by the end, but that's Lux.

Furugoori Kona2 votes

I mean, 6 second max level ulti is pretty nice... :3 Needs good positioning to not die every 1-3 seconds though, which most people who play Yasuo don't know what that is...

3TWarrior3 votes

windwall neutralizes all projectile abilities and lasts half of its cooldown or more

NichtHurz7 votes

But still Yasuo is just super weak in URF, since he's getting very low benefits for his damage output.

zlumpy1 votes

I think its his ults spammability. Very easy to see multiple yas ults in a single encounter resulting in some serious CC and good damage.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

Ult on a 15 second cooldown if I remember correctly. I played it alot god knows why but it was by no means great lol.

zlumpy1 votes

Did cooldown start as soon as he activates or after he finishes the ult? Cause he is up there quite awhile.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

On activation, sorry late response. The duration of the ult is 1 second exact.

zlumpy1 votes

Always feels longer on the recieving end :p

QuiverMeTimbers3 votes

excuse me i played 4 matches with lux and did not lose once even versus big tanks. knowing how to build and spamming ult. maybe we are not playing the same. because my lux is unstoppable literally. you just cant play cocky with her.

And u left out Evelynn

Xilixer1 votes

god i hate her in urf. perma invisible just like shaco.

You are lucky man then. I still prefer ARURF over URF however for some reason I mainly see the same champs every game. Cass, Nasus, Trynda in nearly every game, Jayce, Lux, Morgana, Evelyn, Teemo, Ahri and Veigar more often than others.

GREGORIOUS BIG9 votes

I loved it!

Although i would prefer they remove rerolls so that it truly became random!

Would be nice if they included both regular URF and AR URF so everyone can be happy little birds :)

The difference is games aren't won in champion select with normal URF. I've had people refuse to dodge and literally run down mid until the game was over just because they got a shit pick. I've had to play rammus vs lux/brand in a lane before. That's not fun that's just irritating.

so just like normal urf? both normal urf and all random urf are about which team gets the most OP picks, in normal urf if you got 1 of those silly players who want to have fun and not pick 1 out of the top 20 OP champions then you lose if the enemy does have 5 players who pick the most OP champions thus also losing at champion select

ZyniX7 votes

In normal urf you can counter op with op. In ARURF you are shit out of luck or have an ez win. Neither are fun imo.

so in other words pick the same OP champions game after game after game after game or get roflstomped, you know what I'd rather have arurf then where I can play more then a dozen champions in total.

I've never had fun past the 1st day of normal urf because whenever I would try a non OP fun pick I would get roflstomped so hard I couldn't even stay under the tower, with arurf I can at least get a random fun pick and have a chance at the game instead of having literally 0% chance of winning.

That's not at all what was said in the quotation you selected. Nuance will set you free--understanding properly will reveal that your concerns are unnecessary.

This is more of an attitude or perspective problem than a game problem. A small but vocal minority of players feel similarly to you. Nonetheless, it's a minority. IMO Riot Games should find some way to address that in a non-punitive way; i.e., incentivize enjoyment of the game, rather than punish non-enjoyment.

SzGamer2273 votes

"Small but vocal minority"

You just assumed that the people who express opinions besides your own are the minority.

It just so happens that this "minority" happens to have the back of the company that runs this game, which has unlimited access to gameplay statistics and game mode queue popularity and know exactly how popular a rotating game mode is. It just so happens that they changed URF to AR URF because Riot saw a significant decline in popularity in URF mode past the first day that it came up, which happens to fall in line exactly with the account of someone you just called the "minority".

I love how easy it is to fall into the mentality that you are always in the majority on contested issues and that the minority is therefore wrong. It carries with it a subliminal expression of arrogance and entitlement that you don't get with outright arrogant and entitled people.

Believe me, I have to be cautious about it myself, but in this case, I think it's reasonable to assume that a game company that does its best to maintain its image to its playerbase and maximize how much people play the game would have no reason to change something unless there was reason to think that it benefited a majority of players, and since the URF change was targeted at making the mode more fun for people to pay consistently who only played URF for one day then quit because of the stale "OP pick or lose" meta, it is safe to assume that a majority of payers felt this way as well.

One last thing; how the damn do you incentivize enjoyment of a game when enjoyment of a game is its own incentive? And how does changing something with the intent of making it more enjoyable punish non-enjoyment? Are you 100% sure either of these things make sense?

I'd just like to point out that riot seeing a decline in URF and trying out a remedy doesn't mean it worked. We'd have to see their data before any real conclusions can be made. In fact the difference in players when URF came out compared to now could simply be due to it being new and different.

I remember having a lot more fun the first couple of URF's when I was able to decide what I played. Hated fizz and sona then and still do now but at least I could fight back.

The people arguing against this point are either unwilling or unable to accept the simple reality of corporate policy, blindness to unmeasured statistics (which the previous poster conflates with Riot's access to data--which is actually limited, despite the comment's claiming otherwise), and the wide range of possibilities that the aggregated playerbase is unable to "conceptualize" (however that's defined, for the aggregate).

I remember having a lot more fun the first couple of URF's when I was able to decide what I played. Hated fizz and sona then and still do now but at least I could fight back.

A suggestion I offered in 2015: rather than a reroll quota, give players a "self-select" quota. A champion is randomly assigned at champ select, but if a player has any "self-selects" remaining, they can select a champion in lieu of accepting a random champion.

Or, you know--try 10 bans, as we suggested in 2014. There are so many obvious options that would improve the game mode (for the people who don't like URF for its alleged tryhard issues, which I don't care about personally).

And if Riot made it permanent, I might consider going back to spending hundreds of dollars on RP (which I haven't done since 2014 when they said they wouldn't make URF permanent in some form--custom would have been enough for me). It's hard to say, really; the damage may have all been done by now. It's 2017.

didn't bother me one bit I don't care who I play against I don't even care about winning. I only care about playing champs that I enjoy playing isn't that really what the game should all be about. urf is about having fun, what's fun about playing a champ you hate to play?

What's fun about getting your ass kicked in if you don't play one of a roster of 12 champions? It's not fun to get completely obliterated, you can't enjoy your game or your champion if you have an untargettable Master Yi Alpha Striking you to death, or Riven running you down with that skippy flippy shit, or Jax lauging in your face as he takes no damage and beats your face in. Playing a champion you might not like is far, far, far more fun than not being able to play the game at all because you're always dead to cheesy shit.

Nothing wrong with that, but you are in fact the minority by a lot. The mode is designed to be inbalanced with some champs being very OP resulting in a meta that you have to follow and then suddenly all you see are the broken champs every game. Personally I got sick of URF very fast, but ARURF I have spammed throughout the whole weekend because at least the cancer champs are restricted to being randomly gotten. For the same reason ARAM is healthier when you get a random champ, ARURF mode is healthier also when you get a random champ. Also, many champs I don't like I find more fun to play in URF mode because it effectively changes the champ a lot.

i'm not in the minority look at every poll on here or every gaming website on the Internet uRF always wins the poll over aRURF.

sir d wreck1 votes

Polls can be inaccurate in many ways, so that's not very convincing, sorry. There is a reason Riot changed it, and I think Riot has access to much more data than a few polls you can find online. If it wasn't/isn't as successful, then they might change it back but I doubt that will happen, but hey you can hope right? And like I said, ARAM is much healthier because it has random champs, and ARURF mode is the same way. If you didn't have random champs people would end up picking OP champs and a stabilized meta would form - which is what Riot doesn't want for a fun game mode.

acehole762 votes

every single poll is inaccurate? as for riot they hate urf and are trying to kill it.

OMG I just had a match with a jax on the other team - he was unkillable. I had trist, full build standing under a tower he dove in and killed me, walked away with most of his health. I think he had 31 kills in that match. He got a penta and 3 quadras ... it was constant. They won the match from just him, we smashed the rest of their team. (though I guess with all of my attack speed even without Jax, rammus was making my life suck)

P0IS0N IVY5 votes

I enjoy the chaos in the game mode, although the winning team is usually decided at the very beginning. The only thing I disliked were people rolling the OP champs in the mode and then being toxic towards everyone else.

Elkington VI4 votes

I once queued up for a game of normal URF and people immediately began telling me what champions I could/couldn't play, so I dodged and never tried it again. I can't see how making this mode random would be any better, especially since there's only a select few champions I can play remotely well.

Spârky2 votes

I think people need to realize that this game mode isnt about playing champions well its about just having fun and exploring. I dont know i just find it so much fun getting anivia and trapping people in my base with her wall. Or getting singed and running around everywhere. Stuff like that. People just get so upset when they dont do good and when they dont win that they forget to have fun with the game at hand. If you lose oh well its freaking urf nobody cares just have fun!
