The Ashe change. The hidden nerf.

My story on this game starts back this time last year, my first champion? Ashe. Since that time, i have mained her excessively proving to be my strongest champion in terms of my understanding of mechanical damage; in short, i knew how much damage i could surprise with, how powerful the frost is and how underestimated i really was.

So when i heard of an Ashe rework, i was rather excited; scared, but excited. As the information came, i actually thought this would have been a welcomed change for me, an upgrade on some blandish skills as you were, i positive step forward. What has greeted me however is a sad reality.

Now i'm not going to say that all of what has happened is the reason because the powerful irony of the situation is, the one thing that people wanted changed is the one thing that actually made her strong. That's right, the crit passive/damage.

My Ashe build in inspiration of her passive was a special one, runes in crit damage, more AD with less AD defense. The poke was enough, the slow punished and the crit loaded with her range did the work. One of the most balanced ADC's in terms of laning presence. She had it, because you could not make mistakes against her, or you'd know about it

her passive was what set her apart, to come back into lane, or to wait in ambush of a bush, the damage you'd deal would be great, you'd win the duel for sure, because you made sure you knew how......

So what now? Well, you may have noticed that Ashe no longer crits, AT ALL... But she does i hear you say?... She does in her own way correct... But only in a way that straps her from her almost random chance of high damage for a more even progressive damage.... Problem? you don't have enough time... You have no escape, no real cc and in turn, no damage. Her new Q even has an animation resulting in a kiting issue. Least not forget the nerf on the slow, which now builds up over the course of the game; but Ashe needed the lane phase feed... Without it, she's nothing more than a target.

Her core strength; much like with any ADC, her crits have been shattered and with a weaker slow, kiting is less effective, the burst potential is no longer there...

As someone who has loved Ashe for 1+ year, with almost 300+ games in her name, it's sad to say that honestly, she has certainly been nerfed...

with q active the slow is actually stronger now, and even though the first auto will deal less you can guarantee more damage one every auto after especially with the extra damage from a fully stacked q. It is a slightly different play style but she is no less viable.

The only think that I actually do not like about her change was the e, I really enjoyed that extra gold.

The q itself has a shorter duration. Without the damage, there's not enough time unless there's certain weaker factors playing against you.

It may be short but its a very strong 4 second window for trading.

Old ashe was nice because you were guaranteed a strong trade as the first trade. The downside was that if you didn't take them out in the first trade you had to leave so your passive to reset.

New ashe isn't guaranteed a strong first trade but if she was able to get stacks she can do a strong trade. She can also do repeated strong trades easier.

I like this because it allows her to repeatedly do strong trades even if each one is slightly weaker than her old strong trade.

She no longer gets as much gold from CS, yes, but she has gold value added into her kit in its place, gained by ranking up Q.

In fact, the gold price of the stats she gains while Q is active-- WITHOUT the stack bonus-- is actually higher than the typical amount of gold she would get from her E's passive by a significant amount-- and WITH the stack bonus, which increases her AA's damage by 30 or 35% at max rank, she gets a ton of extra value from her Q compared to the gold value she lost from her E's passive being removed.

Plus, it doesn't require you to have a free item slot. :/

I know the rework is better, I just liked that about old ash.

Free item slot?

You had to have inventory space to use the gold earned from Hawkshot; but you do not need open inventory space to do so with the gold value from her new Q. d:

If you had 6 completed items, potion, and upgraded trinket with old Ashe, you were done and Hawkshot's passive was effectively worthless.

With new Ashe, as long as you don't cap your AS with items, your entire kit has use always.

I personally do not hate the changes and am really looking forward to seeing how she does with her redesigned kit.

I'm familiar to that move you mentioned which utilizes her 100% guaranteed crit chance passive to burst a squisshy who may overextend for cs, but I believe you do not see the gains from this rework. Now she is no longer limited to having to wait until say lvl2-4+ in order to be able to provide any CC for ganks as it is now in her passive. Of course you lose the crit burst to harass ADCs in lane who try to go for last hit on a CS, but you obtain better sustained trade potential earlier on. You lose the gold passive from her E, but it never really mattered to me. What it meant was just 20-40+ more CS gold value as the game progressed, but it ends up being traded for better vision control which translates to better objective control oriented play style that fits where Riot wish for the game to be headed this season.

Regarding her laneing in more micro focus, for me, it does not seem like her play style at lvl1 will change for me. What does change is that I now have an option in lane to let the enemy bot lane shove at me pre-4 because I'm no longer restricted to leveling up my consistent CC from my Q at lvl4 and waiting until then to recede the lane allowing for JG ganks because I can assist JG ganks earlier with CC. Her new Q really helps with her late game as a tank busting hyper carry. And, based on the damage indicator on the video, it applies passive effects... You know what that means in the current Juggernaut Meta >>> item 3153 Only real nerf is to her W which is really helpful in lane for my play style with her at the moment for shoving and harassing when used properly.

Please note that while I had a positive win rate with Ashe during season 4, my current win rate with Ashe is 25%. Although one could argue its probably because of the Supports I've had... Or didn't have (I mean, Vlad Support who tries to take all the CS for themselves and doesn't build SightStone, what kind of Support is that?), ultimately I cannot say that I understand this champion to have any major say in regards to her development. Merely sharing my 2cents.

Amen!!!! Someone else that understands how terrible this patch was for Ashe!!!

I've been watching Pro Ashe games all day, and it's always the same... good early game, and a complete failure late game.
