For people not knowing the origins of turrets/towers in LoL and what should be their role.
First of all for all of those who think that lol turrets have nothing to do with towers i'll say to you don't know anything about mobas in general. Mobas were created from the mod defense of the ancients on the warcraft 3 game. Warcraft 3 is a medieval-fantastic game and towers and outposts from the rts were used as turrets in the defense of the ancients mod. As warcraft is a medieval-fantastic game and a rts it is inspired by real historic buildings mixed with fantasy and imagination.

As you can see in the dota mod game it is wrote : TOWER and it is a ziggourat from the rts warcraft 3
Moreover using the term turret is completely wrong :
A turret is simply a small, circular tower attached to a larger structure, usually on a corner or angle. The difference between a turret and an actual tower is that turrets typically don't start at the ground level and, rather, cantilever out from another upper level
So originally warcraft 3 takes a historical building and uses it in his game and defense of the ancients uses it too. So they used the role and the purpose of a historical building in their moba. As lol is a copy of the dota mod when it was created they used towers the same way. It was used as a defensive structure inspired by historical buildings.
Then what are towers historicaly talking ?
First of all towers were built as outposts or watch towers for small cities and villages to see when and where raiders, bandits or ennemies from the other villages were coming.
Then with the neolothisation and the apparition of oppida and city states they became defensive structures to protect the CENTERS of society : protect rulers : castles, governments, senates, etc...
So as in lol you have the outer turrets which are outposts/watch towers and the inner turrets which should be defensive structures. The closer you get from the castle aka nexus the harder it should be for the ones making the siege. However in lol it is the opposite : turrets have less life the closer you get from nexus.
In this picture you can see 2 portuguese towers which are protecting with the dungeon behind them the castle. Those 2 towers exist since 1140... they have never fallen even with the napoleonic invasions when the remaining resistance gathered and fought from inside. Those have a similar disposition to the turrets protecting the nexus. More proofs that the game was at beginning inspired by historical buildings...

Inner turrets should be strong and difficult to take. If you didn't know in medieval times it was really difficult to take a castle with strong defensive towers and big walls. In most of the cases it was impossible. Only 10% of the sieges were a success even with the defenders being vastly outnumbered. That's the reason they used to try to starve to death defenders.
Okay perhaps outer turrets should be easy to destroy however the closer you get from the objective the more difficult it should be and not the opposite. It seems very illogical from riot to reverse the process of defending the base.
In the game : the closer you get from the nexus the less life towers have which seem not logical at all. During most the seasons in lol this wasn't like this and they decided to reverse it by nerfing towers.
