It's time for Riot to get more employees...

MOuHahaHAhahaaaa··82 votes·3,165 views

Aren't you the only one desperate to see that :

On November 12, 2014 we had new summonner's rift, riot promised to make new visuals for old looking champions

Don't forget !!!! Riot games has become one of the wealthiest gaming companies !!! $$$$$

Meanwhile

4 years later

4th January 2018 :

  • Malphite still looks like a potato (a brown one, like poop)

  • Nunu still looks like cruella with a fur coat

  • Anivia still looks like a fucking blue kite made by my 10 years old neighbour

  • Caitlyn still looks like a wh*re (wait that's not a problem.... Wait... WAit... WAAAIIIIT those textures on her classic skin aren't good enought to appreciate this fact)

  • Skarner still looks like a candy in the shape of a scorpion

  • Trundle (looks like me, Oh f**k ! No NO, Nonono ! that's not what i want to say) => forget it !

Meanwhile Riot creates new champs and new skins instead of updating old content (yeah old content doesn't give money)...

Meanwhile in 12 months Blizzard updated wow's game engine while adding more meshes and polygones. We are talking about the biggest (in size) game ever made.

I would give money for cait to stripe her old clothes (uh mh i mean old textures).

I would even buy f*cking green irish Malphite skin if he looks badass...

Meanwhile EA makes a new star wars battlefront in 7 months. A stormtropper or even Darth maul requires way more details and modeling than single champ...

Most of gaming companies would make the job for the entire champs in perhaps not even a month...

I don't know perhaps seniors employees are scared about new generation skills and ideas... Comon i'm sure that it will be a good balance between new and old people... You know riot there are loot of young people with a degree and looking for jobs and some of them play lol since beta...

IF YOU WANT RIOT TO FINISH THIS BEFORE RELEASING NEW CONTENT

UPVOTE !

Riot actually covered why hiring more employees will not solve problems: https://nexus.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/2017/12/ask-riot-movie-honor-opponents-urf/

Ah yes, the gross misunderstanding of core message of "The Mythical Man Month". The book describes why adding people to a project doesn't make that project move ahead faster, but the problem at hand is that projects can be handled in parallel with basic project management skills.

As an indie dev I beg to differ. Hiring more has always helped. This is some half assed excuse to make the idiot plebs sit down and give them more money.

Isn't there diminishing returns though? For a smaller company going from 10 to 20 employees will see a higher return versus a larger company going from 1000 to 1020 employees.

It depends how much money they make, and well riot makes as much as much as blizzard from what I heard last, so its them just being greedy.

Yes there is to a degree, but that really depends on what we're talking about. What situation the development team is in for example, and where the manpower in that business is situated, then of course, what exactly that focus or new manpower will be put into.

A small scale but easy to understand example would be this.

Programming a character: You could put 5 people on it, but 4 of them would have almost nothing to do without seriously stepping on the toes of that first programmer. In this case there is an extreme diminishing returns, as most of the programmers will default to bug testing, which is something they already have internal testers for to begin with through the production steps.

However, what we're talking about here is updating, upkeeping, and revitalizing old characters. 1 modeler/texture artist could be put on multiple, and this honestly wouldn't take that long, as the OP pointed out. Riot could easily hire a contractor, or someone to be paid to do them, but not outright hired if they're worried about having excess employees once the job is done.

As the OP said, it wouldn't take that long to be honest, nor would it be that difficult, especially if its not a re design of the character, and simply an update to their textures.

No, the real reason Riot isn't doing it is none of that cop out excuses, the real reason is simply because they don't want to go through the trouble of hiring people for it, paying them, and dealing with trying to find someone to make the textures in their art and style that fits the game. (This is the most problematic part of it). They could do it if they wanted, and it wouldn't be that difficult. They just don't want to be bothered with it.

As an Indie dev

How big is your team? Can that truly be compared to a larger sized company? Isn't the Key difference, the word you yourself use "Indie".

Read my post right above yours, and decide if what I say has any merit or not. Being an indie dev means 2 things.

  1. I have experience on a small scale (Our team is 30-40 people).

  2. I've researched large game companies, etc. and how they do things

and 3) I've talked and have contacts within large scale game companies for information and support.

Maybe what I said isn't relevent in EVERY situation, but I pretty much say that and explain it above in the post right above yours.

Because what they talked about was irrelevant to the situation. I addressed what was.

I mean, it is relevant, but aight.

More empoyes on one project might not help much, but starting multiple projects with sepperate teams is a possibillity. Sure multiple gameplay relevant projects might be an issue as they interfer with each other and can cause massive balance issues('cough' classupdates 'cough'), but in terms of pure visual updates it should not be an issue at all. Or actually getting a spperate team that works on TT or Dominion...

The main reason they won't do any of that is because they(or rather tencent i guess) want to maximize thier income as nr.1 priority.

Sraeg20131 votes

I've seen game companies that could overhaul their entire products in a matter of months WHILE constantly developing new things with much lower numbers of employees.

There's one truth in that article.

Growing too quickly can put a huge strain on a company’s culture as you struggle to get all the newcomers to understand the way you think about things.

It's been like this since the beginning.

Niyume22 votes

It's not that they don't have enough employees... Riot already has hundreds of people working there. It's the way their business is designed. They focus on making the most money out of the game possible, and then they think about quality.

Hiring more people won't do anything. : / Gotta get rid of Tencent, and hire a new CEO that gives a damn.

Bob the Toastr1 votes

Agreed. New skins = more $ but visual updates for existing champs doesn't. Simple math on their part.

Niyume2 votes

Well, VGUs do make a bit of money, since it makes more people play otherwise unplayed champs... but they do it so much slower than they need to in order to build up hype for each individual release. If they released several reworks at a time, or did one every couple weeks (remember they have multiple teams doing this, so if it takes, say, 3 weeks, you'd have a new rework every week just about), then there'd be a lot less hype, and people wouldn't spend as much money to get new skins and whatnot.

As far as straight up VUs go, without modifying gameplay... that would only take a week or so, but they don't make any money at all while costing a good amount, so Riot just won't do it.

Kind of funny how they say they put quality above all else, even money, but run their company the total opposite way. Last I checked, lying to your consumer base was illegal. ^^

The list of champions they've already hit is much longer than the one you've got. They can't just drop all their artists on VU's.

Idk how it's possible for such a large company to use months on a single rework, it's rather staggering. Smells structural inefficiency and incompetence. Probably using the majority of their resources on monetization practices.

Use months on a single rework due to inefficiency or purposely not releasing a bunch of reworks to existing champions because reworking one champion at a time already causes the meta to shift and flow around. Imagine one giant pipe, then adjusting one of hundreds of faucets to see the outcome versus adjusting five of them all at once. If it starts to trickle, overflow, or explode, you don't know which to revert; was it Faucet Akali, Anivia, Malphite, Riven, Yasuo, a combination of them, or all of them?

I would agree with entire re works, but the OP was mostly talking about updating the textures/meshes. Not full on reworks.

I mean...i love the humor in this post but you're really missing the point of some of these things.

Meanwhile in 12 months Blizzard updated wow's game engine while adding more meshes and polygones. We are talking about the biggest (in size) game ever made.

Meanwhile EA makes a new star wars battlefront in 7 months. A stormtropper or even Darth maul requires way more details and modeling than single champ...

The thing with League is, in order for it to remain universally played among the most amount of players possible, they can't afford to create an engine or upgrade the visuals to a level that many players' computers, my own included, can't handle.

And Riot already said that introducing new staff isn't really the solution to everything. It's a long integration progress. While i think that's a lousy excuse, it could be true. They need to up the development speed on some of their non-balance/champion creation related stuff like visual updates and overall side-projects, in my opinion.

Rouwhorst2 votes

It is not really about a new engine or better visuals all around. The examples are about the work put into a game. League is an enormous game for quite a while now yet some of the things still in game really don't fit in, that is rather unprofessional.

rtbf2256182411 votes

But...i was clearly addressing specific points not everything.

Also, what do you think doesn't fit in then?

Rouwhorst1 votes

Well you said he missed the point of the two examples and go on why that is not applicable to league. I say they are applicable because they are about the work put into it, not about the visuals. In other words I think you interpreted the examples wrong.

The things I think don't fit in a such a big game are among others certain champion visuals, as the main post is concerned about. But also Things like the HUD, crit and certain bugs which are easy to fix. A list of things in my other post here.

Game developing and art isn't like coal-mining. You can't measure the work put into it without supervising each "worker" individually. I don't know what you're getting at here. League's engine is meant to be pretty but easy on all machines so everyone can play it. And as they put it - throwing more bodies at the problem won't create a solution. It'd create more confusion as it's like recruiting more people into playing League and then immediately asking them to solve the Bot lane meta problem. They wouldn't even know where to start.

Entirely your opinion then. I don't find anything wrong with the visuals and bugs are natural to literally every game ever made at some point. Crit is something they said they'll look at, as it's a form of shitty RNG aknowledged by them aswell.

zero3565 votes

Personally, I think hiring a small a team to tackle small stuff the doesn't really fit anywhere else would be a good idea.

For example, fixing death recap is important, but who would do it? They don't want to put current teams on a side project like that. And they don't like hiring just for one job. So let the "miscellaneous" team handle it.

Then they can go work to update the website (specifically the older parts) And then maybe look into Morde's ~170 odd bugs Etc.

Just anything small/out of the way enough to not require a full team or that a full team can't get to for a while would fall to them. Obviously, staffing such a catch-all team would be hard as balls, but it could be done.

Beast Brawler1 votes

Honestly, Mordekaiser is a mess. He has this many bugs, some of them can cause you to lose trades or games, and then whenever something new comes out or when Riot changes the code too much Mordekaiser literally breaks the game and has to be hot fixed.

waiting for WoW5 votes

WoW is currently a terrible game right now so that's a bad analogy.

WoW was far higher in quality up until The Wrath of The Lich King, after Blizzard decided to follow the Activision business model and milk WoW for all the money it was worth with constant but mediocre content the same way Activision loves to milk CoD for revenue.

I prefer Riot's business model tbh. Quality content cannot be released on such a rigid timeline.

Sorry but you can't really compare that, when Blizzard earns money from players for just playing the game, while league really almost only gets money for new stuff.
