Mages in botlane, should something be done?

RedCyclone··2 votes·582 views

We are seeing a ton of successful mages going botlane, we know that Annie Brand Zyra have been good in the support role but now seeing Malzahar XerathVelkoz doing incredibly well in botlane it's looking unnerving for support

Tank supports are seeing very little play because mages destroy them with incredibly high base damages and good early utility and kiting skills Utility AP supports like Lulu and Zil are being crowded out because why need AP to get good utility when you can just start the game with it in your rank 1 skills

Should something be done to prevent these champions from dominating the support role, perhaps lowering base damage and upping AP ratios? or giving these champions utility ratios?

With all the Crys to diversify the meta why does everyone want nerfs once the meta starts to diversify it's counter productive

People don't like change. When Camille came out, nobody wanted to learn to play against her and instead call for nerfs. Yasuo has always been an okay pick, but for some reason or another he sparked up again and now they're calling for nerfs and ban him outright (I let them through, he's annoying but I'd rather use my ban on something better like Swain who's currently destroying my games)

Look at all the Ahri nerfs, I could tell you the many many ways to counter her, yet people are calling for changes because she's great at building for the game with her many options as compared to someone like Ashe or Vayne who must build one way or lose. I mean, I don't like when there's a support Vel'koz in my game or we have a top lane kalista that binds with the jungler (it USED to be good, but with her being gutted, not to sure anymore) but I'll at least try to find ways to play around it. Hell, I had to deal with a Blitz-Morde bot lane for two and a half weeks before I found out you just need your jungler to screw them over early.

Here's my problem though and I'm "new" having just started in November after nearly a 5 year break but you can have your cake and eat it too and with the current system of 1-1-2-1jg maybe something shammin up the system allowing buffs in the map could change a stagnant team comp. This is what so many people ask for but as soon as it starts "everybody" cries for nerfs.

Yes mages are crowding out regular picks and they call this "diversity" yet when anything other than mages gets picked in mid lane they get them nerfed rofl

When was the last time a non-mage moved into mid and got nerfed for their troubles? You'll find it easier to find mages like Lulu or Zillean who got nerfed for going mid than you will non-mages like Ezreal, Varus, Cho'Gath, etc.

LUL

I honestly see no problems. Almost every one of those mages suffer from insatiable mana problems and the inability to consistently provide CC to help set up their laner. I've trashed Malzahar with traditional supports because he cannot afford to be as aggressive as he needs to be, and his shield may as well be non-existent with 2 champs to pop it. Almost every traditional support can severely outclass every one of these mages over the course of the game - while those mages start running into money problems and their damage dwindles, traditional supports still have their CC and utility that allows them to be relevantly functional on a tight budget.

its not that mages are broken or adcs are weak. its just that the game has too much damage in it right now focusing too heavily on the early game and the leads it creates for the rest of the game.

adcs also have damage, its just that theirs comes later.

so it makes sense that if the early game is so relevant, that you put an additional mage (someone who spikes sooner with cheaper items) on your team.

They aren't dominating the support role, they're filling the same niche of bully supports that has always existed.

The meta doesn't even lend itself towards these type of champions right now, shield supports who go on to build redemption and locket are insanely strong.

But locket and redemption are going to receive nerfs

And then protective enchanter supports might actually be balanced instead of OP. But we won't really know until it happens.
