I see no reason why we still only have one flavor of Sightstone

And it's RUBY

Health is cool and all, and it's not unlike its a stat what can't be used on most supports anyway, but really your poke and utility supports don't make as much out of it as tank supports do Since we have had a more diverse work go into selective items into sub roles items, such as the entire jungle item list, can we please see some kind of extra diversity injected into the support role too?

Supports do already have one item dedicated to sub support roles, the gold generation items are a good thing, but you have to remember that every support has to dedicate 2 item slots to 2 core support items every game, so give us the freedom to let the sightstone portion work optimally for all supports and not just tank supports.

Tanky supports already take up 90% of the support picks anyway and are far far more favored in the meta then utility/poke supports, so why not give them both a different sightstone to help them see more play, one centered around giving mana regen and mana, and the other giving AP

Disclaimer This isn't a buff to sightstone, think more of a sidegrade, the idea is to still keep the different sightstones money to stat ratio not worth it so that other roles cannot abuse the items, all while giving supports who see little play such as Sona and Soraka (examples of 2 champions who can utilize the AP or Mana stone much more then the current HP stone) so they get as much benefit from buying into a sightstone as support champions do who scale really well with HP like Leona and Thresh, 2 champions who have been very popular for OVER 2 YEARS.

Rename Sightstone into Garnet Sightstone (Another red gem) and change the icon into a more faded red then Ruby Sightstone

Lapis Sightstone - Builds out of item 1004 +item 1004 and provides 50% increased mana regen and 150 mana Sapphire Sightstone - Builds out of Lapis Sightstone + item 1027 and provides 100% increased mana regen and 400 mana

Opal Sightstone - Builds out of item 1052 and provides 30 AP Amethyst Sightstone - Builds out of Opal Sightstone + item 1052 and provides 70 AP

Perhaps even make these sightstones only buildable if you have item 3301 item 3302 item 3303 and their upgrades, this would fix non supports being able to abuse them

I am no geologist so I probably messed up with the gems, but I hope you get the idea, both these mana and AP focused ward spitting items would help the utility and ap supports out there who see next to no play, instead of painfully buying into damn health when they just don't really need it.

item 1027 + item 1028 should make up the Garnet Sightstone.

May make more sense from the items color rather not splice the stats, keep them contained in their own raw stats

Also purple is kinda the mage color in this game, would make sense for the AP version to be purple

And there clearly needs to be a Pearl Sightstone, to combine with the Amethyst Sightstone to make the Opal Sightstone.

As long as we don't combine the Amethyst Sightstone with the Garnet Sightstone for that one item, Sugilite Sightstone.

Great on paper, but bot lane went out of control.

The additional health is actually harmful on Soraka. I main Soraka, and buying sightstone without the coin upgrade, I don't get enough sustain.

Supports in general suffer from poor itemization choices, IMO, and Sightstone is no exception. Support has the lowest average gold income, coupled with the lowest return on investment for stats that they're expected to trade off for active effects. Mikael's is 75% gold efficient, Sightstoneis 50% gold efficient, FQC is 80% gold efficient, Talisman is 80% gold efficient, and FaceOfTheMountain is 90% gold efficient. For many of these items, their active can (and in some cases absolutely will) make up for their inefficiency, but the lack of stats on the item results in a sub-tier champion. As a quick benchmark, a Spellthief support with an ADC hitting 80% of their CS will return to base at 7.5 minutes with a total of ~1,200 gold earned where the ADC has earned ~1670, assuming ideal Spellthief usage. So you've got 2/3 the income, and you're using that to buy items that are half as gold efficient in terms of stats. This is why many supports seem so strong in lane at the start, and quickly fall off after the first back.

I think supports deserve an overhaul similar to the way Jungle has been overhauled with varying build paths, enchants, and interaction with summoner spells. With this goal in mind, the most support-oriented item to implement this on would be Sightstone. In the same way that Hunter's Machete can only be purchased when you have Smite, make Sightstone limited to supports with Exhaust, and probably remove the armor/mr shred component. Next, allow us to purchase upgrades to Sightstone itself, similar to the jungle upgrades, that will interact with Exhaust and, similar to the jungle upgrades, costs 250 gold. Some examples off the top of my head (that may be overpowered or underpowered):

  • Increased Income/Wave Clear - Exhaust may now be cast on enemy minions, executing them and rewarding 150% gold to yourself and the yourself and the nearest allied champion
  • Increased Mobility - When exhaust is cast, it increases nearby ally move speed by x%, diminishing over x seconds.
  • Damage Amp - Exhaust also causes allied champions to deal increased damage to the target.
  • Increased Utility - Casting exhaust immediately resets the cooldown on all abilities with a cooldown lower than 15 seconds.

As a final step, I see no reason to not simply use the jungle enchants on the Sightstone itself, though I don't see many supports going for anything outside of Cinderhulk and Magus. Then as the game expands, we can add/modify change enchantments that would improve game play for both Jungle and Supports, such as snow-ball mechanics on Mejai's, Tear, and Rod of Ages.

PerishSoftly3 votes

I must point out that Exhaust already has a "damage amp" component: it lowers the resists of the enemy champion hit with it by 10 each. Not very effective vs a tank, but squishy assassins and ADCs really suffer that loss.

HouseCat014 votes

i like this, other than having to take exhaust to use it.

Narabug1 votes

We could honestly change it to anything, or even some sort of new support-only summoner. The idea is to have it tied to a utility summoner that few non-supports would take (which is coincidentally why I included the suggestion of removing the armor/mr shred). We could tie it to Garrison if we wanted to see a lot of dive plays or have supports be able to save their turret, or Clairvoyance/Clarity, or even all three to encourage meta shifts.

Gavran4 votes

... I'd love an excuse to take Clairvoyance. I'm not anywhere near good enough with map... I dunno, prediction? To get that great of use out of it, or even to remember to use it often enough, but I'd like to get better.

I don't like it being tied to Summoners though. I don't like that you can't Jungle without Smite now. And there are a lot more supports I'll skip exhaust on than Jungler I would have skipped Smite on.

Narabug2 votes

I somewhat share the same train of thought, but I think Flash is a bigger offender of "required" summoners than any other summoner currently in game. I also would like a more meaningful choice in summoners. Adding variety to summoners, or buffing some of the under-represented ones into viability would be a good shift and provide more varied and strategic game play.

HouseCat013 votes

make garrison available on summoner's rift :D

Hell, making alternate build paths and improving their stats a tad might persuade other lanes to pick up the item.

Solarious282 votes

See, that's my point as well. It's not just support's job to pick up wards, but that tends to be the theme. If every area of the map isn't warded, rather than going a buying wards, people would much rather harass support for not warding when support has three visions and a pink already out and set.

Dengeden5 votes

You think AP/Utility supports don't need health? 0_o Are you one of those guys who never trade with abilities or autos and spam their heal? An underleveled, underfarmed champion gets blown up so damn easily. If you want AP just get item 3098 + item 2044.

More specifically, this'll make Nidalee jungle in competitive broken as all heck. And the AP supports who buy it are just gonna roam on you all day.

RedCyclone9 votes

Nah, complete opposite, I am one of those guys who know their limits with the squishy support I play, health is not a stat I desire when I play Sona or Lulu, specially in the first 10 minutes of the game when my early poke is very important If i get chain CC'ed or make a stupid decision to take dumb damage, sightstone ain't gonna help me worth a damn when I am playing these champions, because I am already made of paper

Fashion Mage2 votes

I'm glad someone understands how glassy champions work.

Narabug3 votes

Health is good for every champ, but AP supports (Janna, Sona, Nami) typically do a better job of supporting with AP, CDR, and Mana Regen. The one exception to that is Morgana who is required to get into melee range and survive for 3 seconds. I don't see how it would have any impact on jungle Nidalee since she never buys Sightstone, as her W and spear is more than enough to scout. Also, I fail to understand how providing variety in itemization would increase the rate of AP support roaming in any way whatsoever.

that is simply how it must be done

Here's the main issue with that - Riot Worked REALLY hard with Seasons 3 and 4 to attempt to get rid of the "Warding is just the support's job" idea. That is why All players are limited to 3 Stealth wards (and 1 Pink) on the Map. It's the WHOLE TEAM'S job to ward, and Riot likes it like that. If you made Sightstone ONLY build from support Items, It would reinforce that Archaic and Toxic Thought Process. The only GOOD thing about it would be that it would be a Nerf to Lee Sin.

Rueciel3 votes

sightstone is nearly useless right now. Its very gold inefficient, especially when you consider you can upgrade your yellow trinket into effectively the exact same thing as sightstone. (One ward every 60 seconds, wards last for 3 minutes each, can have up to 3 out at a time.) For only 250g. Paying 800g for something that you can get for 250g isnt worth getting... you'd be better off using your Ruby crystal to head for some other health item. You also cant use both a sightstone and a yellow upgraded trinket. They share the same 3 ward max.

well you can't also have the yellow trinket and the red trinket at the same time either and that's why supports get sightstone and not the yellow trinket upgrade

This is a great idea. I would generally love a sightstone that grants damage and lifesteal. Basically item 1055 + item 1042 could give you Turquoise Sightstone. It could give you AD AS and LS. Later you cold add another item 1055 for the Peridot Sightstone. I'd just like to have one that would encourage carries to ward.

Idk, though. Maybe that's stupid.

I've never seen a champ whose utility scales with AD.

50000000000000004 votes

AD supports don't get extra utility from AD. They already have good amount of utility, and they transition into a damage dealer.

Thresh (E passive gives him extra damage based on souls collected and AD, which gives him amazing poke damage), Ashe (same thing-becomes a secondary ADC), or Lee Sin (was in LCS, has good amount of CC, can go tanky and/or damage).

A lot of supports have no utility AP scaling. Blitzcrank, Annie, Anivia, Nautilus, Nunu, Orianna, Vel'Koz...

Gavran1 votes

My problem with it is supports don't generally get to freely attack minions/monsters to lifesteal up.

More build options for Support Ashe would be awesome though.

relic shield maybe?, but that's just one creep per minute (1 creep per 30s when upgraded)

IMHO, I like the concept but I think it's probably best that item 1055 doesn't build into anything. That's sorta the point of items like it, item 1056 , item 1074 , item 1062, item 1063, and item 2041. They're good for the early game but fall off severely in the late game. If it built into something, that falloff would be removed.

I like the idea of multiple build ways for the sightstone. item 1027 Sapphire being the best option. Probably another that grants movement speed, but there's only item 1001 as basic movement item, so i don't know how to build it.

Last, I dont think Riot would like an offensive item item 1052 that builds into Sighstone too early. Probably because on some champions you'll get better harrasment (Annie Janna Lulu Nami Soraka Zyra + others) that will stop the ADC's cs too easily.

Solarious284 votes

Sight boots? I'm not sure if I like or hate that idea. =.= If Riot gave it a try, I'd be able to tell. Also, it should be fine building item 1052 that early. If you're building item 3092 you have to do it anyway. As Nami or Lulu, that's likely what you'll end up going with.

ModWulf Helhammer1 votes

I think the reason it's like that is because health is a pretty universal stat that is useful in almost every situation

RedCyclone3 votes

Sona Health? no thanks, I would prefer to be poking harder Soraka having more max health hurts me more when I use my heal Lulu I RUN OUT OF MANA IN FUCKING SECONDS, WHY DO I NEED HP Annie .... Janna I work okay with health, but I wouldn't mind being oom less

AD is also a universal stat that can help everyone, your attacks do more damage after all, but not every champion favors it
