"Sona's laning is oppressive, what is why we are nerfing her"

Blitzcrank hurr Leona durr Thresh hurrdurr

Every single one of those champions are more oppressive in botlane then Sona , one these guys get ahead of you by a small margin, they own your ass in botlane All 3 will zone your ass from just showing their faces and force you to be under your tower until your ass gets dived

For a champion focused around poking and harassment, calling Sona oppressive when these guys exist is a insult, she has LITERALLY nothing else but poke earlygame If dealing damage is oppressive in botlane, you should just remove all damage off supports...

Also stop using the word "OPPRESSIVE" as negative slander, it's almost as bad as "TOXIC", it's dumb, specially for the support class where the main aim of being a aggressive support is OPPRESSING THE DAMN ENEMY Sona somehow always gets these negative buzzwords attached to her from Riot for no real reason whatsoever

Eh they dont heal their lane partner so Riot doesn't qualify that as oppressive.

I don't know why Riot even bothers to give Sona and Soraka reworks if they just nerf them constantly.

Fed by Snu Snu18 votes

Neither does Sona, since she has to choose between levelling her poke or her heal.

Which means that she will either poke well or heal well, not both.

Unlike someone else in the roster who somehow gets a free card from nerfs despite doing the same things Sona and Soraka are blamed for, better. Nami

Hilltop Sunset9 votes
  1. Even though her healing/damage spell gets leveled in one, that strength is also her weakness since she often has to choose between harassing the enemy or healing herself/her ally. Heedlessly running in to bubble an enemy to get off both harass and heal can often result in a net loss. It's entirely situational, and more often than not you won't be doing both.

  2. Sona and Soraka's heals are on shorter cooldowns, and are independent of their harass, which is also often on shorter cooldowns. In other words: Soraka can heal WAY more quickly than Nami can, and also still harass the enemy significantly and at better range/more reliable AoE. Sona also has more reliable AoE damage, a shorter CD heal that reliably heals 2 people in one cast.

Every champ is different with different trade-offs. I'm pretty tired of seeing people complain about Nami's harass/heal hybrid move as superior to Sona or Soraka just because they scale together, while neglecting the significant fact that you often don't get an opportunity to do both, and receive diminishing returns the more it bounces.

Luner Hunter4 votes

you're saying that with 0 bounces that 70 mana for 65 hp (rank 1 q nami) is the most cost effective heal in the game when alistar pays 40 mana for 60 hp for himself and 30 for everyone else (rank 1 e alistar), or soraka's 10% hp + 20 mana heals for 120 hp (rank 1 W soraka) ... you really should look up some shit before you start saying its opinion and not FACT

Lulu and karma is really annoying too and then there is zyra and vel koz

IceKingChernobog33 votes

i find lulu more annoying to deal with than sona, with sona you can easily burst her down. With lulu she just transforms you and if her carry isn't brain dead it's practically a free kill. Zyra plants is what makes her so annoying especially if she rushes a liandry's

Pika31024 votes

Hence why Lulu still sees more competitive play than Sona, even to this day. Not to disclude the fact her shield donates Pix's passive to the ADC. It's not quite a Janna shield, but it's WAY better than the piece of shit Q that Sona has.

LordOfTheLeague4 votes

Pix's and janna shield are pretty close in damage before the adc get crit and armor penetration.

Pika31016 votes

Except that Pix's bolts get unit-blocked and don't apply to structures. At least her passive doesn't break when the shield does, like Janna's. Pix will stick around for the full 6 seconds and at max CDR means she's already up again. Pix has 100% up-time.

Hymn of Valor used to have 100% up-time, then it took a Fearless to the knee.

Conncept9 votes

See, this! THIS! Why does Riot disqualify the ability to be killed easily as being viable counterplay? She has no cleanse, a pittance of a speed boost, and really low health. She dies easily to even menial burst damage, and her new ranges REQUIRE that she be within an unsafe distance from the fighting to have any affect on those she is supporting. In a meta where everyone has flash and most a second gap closer, she is not even remotely safe from being killed at any time.

Pika31022 votes

Zilean, Braum and Fiddles too.

Let's all not forget the most obvious one:

Hawkefire23 votes

I know why Riot nerfed Sona.

Lets take a look at what Riots primary game mode is (the game mode that almost all their employees play on most of the time)

ARAMs.

You know where Sona actually IS overpowered? That is right, ARAMs (she pretty much sucks everywhere else, but shove her into a single tight lane and she becomes a borderline god, probably a dramatization, but you get the point).

So in actuality Riot is nerfing her because they love ARAMs.

"Healers on ARAM make games no fun. Nyah.

That's basically the rundown of this change, but to explain a little deeper - we wanted to help out champs who rely heavily on self-healing for their strength (Zac, Maokai) while reducing the power of pokey-heal champs who are pretty much the best in these kind of matchups (looking at you Sona)"

STRAIGHT from the patch notes.

Dingding12316 votes

That's all those have, though, is their scare factor.

Sona's 'scariness' is a constant harass that the enemy lane can't even dodge. And she heals. And her heal comes with a shield. Her kit has so much free value, even now after all of these changes; you can't really deny that.

I like the auras but I don't think she's beyond having another skillshot besides her ulti tbh. Not sure how I feel about the nerfs they're implementing either, honestly.

2 much sauuuce33 votes

Seriously? Maybe you can't dodge it, but you can STAY OUT of it's range. You act like the Sona player doesn't have to know how close they have to be for the Q to hit. It's not easy knowing exactly how far you can venture into enemy territory to get the "free harass" off. And if you are someone like Caitlyn, Jinx, Tristana or Ashe, you have either an auto attack or ability that will hit her easily if she tries to harass. Only your fight back will do more than hers.

And free value? Have you SEEN her mana costs? If I try to play aggressive with Sona I go OOM hella fast... with Athene's and a Morelinomicon... and that's on ARAM where I get bonus mana regen. I still go oom. I go oom A LOT.

As mentioned in another one of these threads. You wanna counter Sona? It's easy.

Right click on her. She's easier to kill than a caster minion.

Sona has become the new irelia, only she got nerfed in a rework then continually nerfed further.

Social Justice 113 votes

Disagree.

Blitz is a hassle, yes. But useless when not landing Q unless he wants to walk into your botlane duo to land Power Fist. He is countered by staying behind minions and warding the bush he is in.

Leona cares not for your minions and will run directly into you. This is considered by many, "Literally the only thing she can do pre-6." After 6, she can stun you at range, to then run directly into you. Poking her down or focusing the carry makes her sad.

Yes Thresh is broken I don't want to go into that c'mon Riot.

Sona is broken because her laning phase consists of her doing free damage to you. The only way to stop getting hit by Q is hoping for a mis-step on her part and being able to capitalize on it. At the moment, she can chunk ADCs without having AP by using her passive.

RedCyclone20 votes

or you know, murder her

She can Q without getting caught out pretty easily. Thankfully the mana costs on her heal means that poking isn't USELESS against her.

The Q that's tied for the lowest base damage amongst the entire support class? Or like RedCyclone said, murder her if she attempts to walk into auto-range to utilize her poorly designed kit.

RadiantWings12 votes

"Sona's laning is oppressive, so we're nerfing her movement speed so that even more oppressive playmaker supports have an easier time hitting her with their skillshots."

Lapis x312 votes

This rework was a horrible failure...Sona isn't balanceable in the state she is in currently.

The reason is because of how smart her teammates are. For instance, her on-hit aura, if everyone on her team uses it on the same enemy, then that enemy will take a large amount of damage. This is the problem. There is no way to balance a champions power based on relying on her teammates to utilize it well. The same could be said about her movement speed bonus. Will her allies move closer to Sona to receive the bonus or will Sona have to chase after them?

Her heal is another topic, I don't know why it has to be so weak when Nami has a much much better heal then her. The shield is worthless as well, because of how short it lasts, you have to predict when to use it which just wastes up Sona's extremely low mana pool.

I really, really wish that Sona could stop getting nerfed gutted, because in the state she is in, she dies in like two hits and is useless as heck without her ultimate. **There is a major problem when you have to build full AP for Sona to be relevant in the game! ** If only the rework could be reverted, but that would never ever happen. Riot, what the heck were you thinking with this "rework".

SexyTaylorSwift12 votes

What made me laugh is when they said they were doing it so "champs that Sona counters have a chance" without doing anything for Sona against the champs that counter her. So, basically, "Now Sona is WORSE against the champs that counter her....and worse against the champs that she counters". GG on making the game "more diverse" rito.

Zakennayo12 votes

Her Q has a chance of hitting nearby minions, her heal and shield is super expensive early, and her E is only useful for the chord (but you're better off using Q or W for the power chord anyway)... yet Sona is too oppressive? Come on, now.

These 3 have a huge disadvantage: if they fall behind in lane, they can't do much. Riot just doesn't like non-skillshot poke, which is BS because the range is so short and she's squishy AF.

Skernan6 votes

AHHHAHAHAHAHA Horseshit. If blitz lands a pull and uppercut with more than one teammate nearby, that enemy is DEAD. Thresh can fly in and drop his ult in nothing flat, with his buddy coming in on the lantern. Leona doesn't even need to be close, just hit with the ult and the jump-stun is easily landed.

That oppressive Thresh with a dodgeable and telegraphed skillshot hook, telegraphed lantern toss, and one of the lower win rates of champions in the game? That opressive Blitzcrank who is heavily reliant on landing a telegraphed and high cd dodgeable skillshot pull? That oppressive Leona who is really easily kited and also heavily reliant on a dodgeable skillshot? None of those champions are oppressive, and statistically only Leona is actually the most successful than them and more successful than Sona. Do you know what Sona's consistent win rate has been for at least a month? About 53%; only two supports are consistently more successful than Sona and that is Leona and Janna (and Sona is not very far behind Leona). In many of these threads I see whining about the small Sona nerf I often see the argument that "why Rito nerf her, when she isn't even that popular?" Well, a champions popularity isn't and should not be the basis for why one is buffed or nerfed. Secondly, anyone claiming that Sona is one of least popular supports is being really disingenuous. Sona's popularity is consistently around 10&; so less popular than Thresh, Leona, and Janna but more popular than Taric, Braum, Karma, etc. With Thresh there is clear counterplay in that he telegraphs what he is gonna do early and easily; it is up to you to react to it accordingly (prime example dodging his hook). Blitzcrank is very similar to Thresh in this regard. The argument for why Sona's play pattern was considered "oppressive" was that she had really good poke (especially early) with good sustain which lead to situations where she got to harrass you for free while her adc could continue to afk farm the wave (and the argument about her high mana costs isn't a good argument either because all 3 champions you listed, especially Thresh and Blitzcrank, also have really high mana costs early). Having strong poke with good sustain can easily lead to imbalance. Also, as a sidenote, its really hard for me as a non-Sona main to have any sympahy to you Sona players when for awhile literally every other thread on the boards was someone whining about the nerfs and also that whenever someone argues with you about the legitimacy of the nerf they get downvoted to hell and the same whiny responses.

You say a champion's popularity shouldn't be accounted for and then you say that Sona is used more then Karma, Braum, etc. You know that Thresh has had the highest pickrate in the game for who knows how long, right? Don't even get me started on how Sona's never even picked in competitive play while he's pick or ban. And Leona is leagues ahead of Sona; she may have only slightly higher of a winrate, but her pickrate is nearly 3x as much as Sona's.

No, no one is whining about one small nerf; they're whining about multiple nerfs that whittle down her power to the point where there's no reason to take her over Nami. They're tired of having feedback ignored ever since the rework thread came about.

AbiwonKenabi4 votes

there's no reason to take her over Nami.

Sona's heal is far superior to Nami's. So is her poke for that matter. Nami has better CC, and her poke is solid, and while her heal is definitely not worthless, its definitely not a Sona heal. Sona also can speed up most of her team with a click of a button and proper positioning. I'd also argue that Sona's ult is better, but eh...they each have their own strengths. Nami's is good for long range engage and can also speed up her team, Sona's is instant and is full-on stun, not just a knock-up. So in my mind, they both have their strengths as supports.

These nerfs are just proof that her rework wasn't garbage like a lot you people seem to think. Say what you about Riot, they are competent enough to know what's strong and what's not. Making the proper nerfs and buffs based on that and not nerfing a champion into oblivion is a different story. (For the record, I have mixed feelings about the nerfs, and I have played Sona a lot in the past and the present.)

Sona's heal is far superior to Nami's.

Yeah, I'm gonna stop you right there.

Nami

HEAL: 65 / 95 / 125 / 155 / 185 (+ 30% AP)

Sona HEAL: 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 (+ 20% AP)

See, it takes 3 ranks into Sona's W to barely heal 5 more health than Nami's rank 1 heal, while having a higher ap ratio. Even with the %missing health ratio (which was cut in half a few patches ago) she won't be healing any more than Nami; you'd have to get assloads of AP on Sona to be as useful.

Sona is useless at this state. Like, people are abusing AP Sona mid but Sona's primary role is support. Come on... Like literally all of the supports have WAYYY bigger power spikes @ level 6 than Sona. Sona needs to get in range/flash to engage. Sona gets outclassed by literally every support. "But muh unavoidable Q poke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xddd" Sure. She would get punished so hard if she was out of position doing that. She's like... WAY squishier than other squishy supports. wtf.

"But muh passive poke so cancerous!!!!!!!!!!!!" I can't disagree with this one. Sona's poke is WAY more toxic than Nami's W and E. Thresh's flay passive. Karma's mantra Q (why are you even here Karma wtf). Janna with AD steroid shield. Obviously.

I'll compare Sona with Nami and Blitzcrank. Sona vs. Nami

Q S(ona): Poke. N(ami): Stun. (Which also deals damage)

W S: Heal N: HEAL AND DAMAGES ENEMY (Sona getting outclassed again, nothing new to see xd)

E S: MS buff E: Auto-attack buff (NOT TO MENTION NAMI'S PASSIVE IS LIKE SONA'S E) [Sona getting outclassed again xdddd]

R S: AoE Stun (SHORT RANGE) R: AoE Knockup and slow afterwards (LONG RANGE) [Nothing new to see here...]

Sona vs. Blitzcrank Q S: Poke B: Grab (STUN) (Which also deals damage)

W S: Heal B: MS buff for himself (well I don't know about this one!)

E S: MS Buff B: Knockup

R S: Short range stun B: AoE short range Silence

As you all know, Blitzcrank counters squishy supports (especially Sona) hard. If you are playing against Blitz as Nami, you can still stun him or his ADC, also heal yourself (EBB AND FLOW BABBBYYYY). But Sona? She doesn't have a basic ability that has hard CC (she only has stun @ level 6). If you're Janna this is way TOO easy, right? You can just TORNADO BIATCHES and shield yourself. Sona? Nami heals...and speeds you up, she can actually hit herself or an ally with her bubble (obviously it won't stun) and it speeds you up, aa boost...movement speed buff, if her wave moves through allies, it speeds them up.... So not only are all of her abilities better, they also each can do what just sona's E badly does if you are basically riding her piggy back through the lane (because the range on it is so piss poor).

Also gotta keep in mind that some of these abilities combo well with Yasuo, who at least was ridiculously popular for a while and is starting to see more play in Korea and China again. Nami has 2 different "displacement" spells that proc Yasuo's ult, Sona has none. Blitz has a pull and a knock up that proc Yasuo's ult, Sona still has none.

So not only do I personally feel (and facts seem to back it up) that they are both better picks but they also combo well with team mates.

Sona gets outclassed TOO hard. Yea, usually I tend to pick Nami with Yasuo, it will definitely be a 99% winnable teamfight if I land my ult nicely and he follows up. Nami also has a better disengage. Long range disengage. Sona would probably have to die to save her teammates because of how short her ult is. Now they're even nerfing her poke in lane and MS. Wat.

Also stop using the word "OPPRESSIVE" as negative slander, it's almost as bad as "TOXIC", it's dumb, specially

You have to remember, the Summoners Code isn't actually a code, it isn't a codicil, it isn't codified, it isn't anything. If that's how they deal with the "transparent" part of player habits, what do you think they are doing with the behind-the-scenes stuff, eh?

cFlame6 votes

Sona is actually an interesting champion that took a different type of skill that differs from aiming and skill shots, making her a very comfortable support that relied on not getting focused because she will quickly die. Sona has never been OPPRESSIVE, like Leona or Blitzcrank that relied on one skill shot and they're carry to just deal damage and win the lane with 1 kill.

Need Gold 4 Tent2 votes

well, the way Sona deals with Thresh Blitzcrank Leona is that she is able to get free damage on them on at regular interval, and those champs have no sustain. by the time they do manage to go HAM like they're well known for, they'd be low enough for the sona poke comp to fight back. you'd need a sustain comp to deal with that (cycle of weaknesses: poke > HAM > sustain > poke)

speaking of poke comps, there are way better poke artists than sona which are far more "oppressive" as you would call it. the thing is, sona has both poke and sustain, which i think leads to heal poking which Riot doesn't like (see what they did to Soraka over the years).

then again, she is heavily gated by mana earlygame when she is most effective so i don't think a nerf is necessary though

Rinky Dinky16 votes

lol no.

A good Leona will fucking pounce and slaughter Sona at level one.

Thresh and Blitz will murder her if they land a single hook/grip. Sona being able to bully these champs IF AND ONLY IF they miss their hooks is called counterplay. Zyra, Nami, Annie, and Zilean can all do the exact same thing BETTER THAN SONA CAN.
