Shen should get AP, not AD, from adaptive stats by default.
He has no AD scalings, but his Q's %health damage and R's shield scale off AP. The default adaptive stat he recieves, however, is AD.
Unless I build a 
, I want that sweet sweet AP. Especially with a Transcendence build, having to give up defenses for an AP item defeats a lot of the point of it.
