"Win a PVP game with a player level 15 or lower"...

What's the point? You know fully well the only way to do this mission is to get a friend on a smurf account. The Bot missions? Sure, makes sense to have missions to help new players get to grips with the game.

But why the flying fuck would you want to actively encourage the use of smurf accounts?

Riot still thinks it is 2010 and the game is the most sensational thing ever.

Also, even let's pretend that the game is still swimming with new players (it doesn't, the game has reached saturation eons ago), how the hell are you supposed to find new players? The public chatroom has been gone for ages.

This mission is as you said, basically asking people to smurf to complete it, which is completely counter-intuitive and pointless.

Oh man I miss the public chat room. Fun times.

Basically ask people irl.

Problem is that compare League/DOTA/etc. to current games like Fortnite, Overwatch and PUBG. Regardless of how you feel about league right now or dota, both games are a climb. You do the tutorial but you only have a basic idea. Now you have to slog out tens, if not hundreds, of games to get a feel for how to actually play. Things only get more complex as time goes on as well, with casts of over 100 characters that all do drastically different things.

Then you have Fortnite, PUBG and OW. Out of the three, OW probably has the most time investment of post-tutorial because you have to learn almost 30 characters...but it's a far cry. All three of these games are pick-up-and-play. You can log into PUBG for the first time and, while you won't win, you'll have a pretty clear idea of what's going on and how to play. The barrier for entry with these games is miniscule compared to the MOBA genre.

Frankly, I don't think league/dota/etc. are going to get many more new players (Despite how I'm sure someone will comment on how it's only League that's doing badly and that actually every other moba is going strong/stabalizing). These games were the social games of 2010 and beyond, the games you play because ALL your friends did. Now that the years have dragged on and the barrier to get in hasn't gone down at all, only a select few will really want to dedicate the time to get through it. Plus the west doesn't really like strategy/rts games to the extent the east does.

In other words, people's attention span are getting shorter and shorter, with the market going along with it.

I can see the apocalypse already.

.....

Also,

That would mean I need to have FERUNDOZ in the first place, doesn't it?

Less "attention spans are lower", more "the demand for fun NOW" has gone up. Look at the past, most popular PC games. Around 2004 we had WoW/MMO boom, which required months-to-years of grinding if you wanted to see everything the game has to offer. Then you had MOBAs, which have massive time investment but not quite the barrier in terms of getting value from the game. Now you have BR/Hero Shooter, which have very little in terms of initial barrier and get you right into the game at the start.

There's always going to be niche games with super deep, complex gameplay that take forever to master but the casual audience's tolerance (Hence why League got big in the first place) for these games has worn thin.

..Do you...not have friends IRL? Like the idea is not to go up to the cashier at starbucks and go "You seem bored wanna play league with me".

SugeMinPikk1 votes

I have a grand total of zero "gamer" IRL friends. Workout buddies, coworkers, fellow metal fans, anime..watchers.. No gamers. I make a conscious effort for "gamer" to not be associated with me.

"Hey man where were you this weekend" "Ah I was uh... playing video games catching up on sleep haha"

If you haven't noticed, Riot is ALL about inviting friends to play, facebook integration, new tutorials, they want you to invite people and gives you credit for it

Riot is losing players and its their own fault, thats why they made that quest but seriously who is gonna suggest their friends to play a game that USED to be good like league...

same, now that fortnite is out, free to play and free from cheats, and with much more fun there is no way to play lol. i was plat and lost two silver game because of trolls and one for afk in last week that i played 5 games, i watched TF BLADE and he lost 2 game in diamond in a row and he is rank1 , and I just think why is it better than fortnite, 0 freaking way to play or recommend it. rito try harding to remove any hard carry potential in game, every way u could solo carry game, like doing a 2 man nashor in 10sec at 20:00 or split pushing or ... all nerfed to ground to force u not farm just play it ARAM shitty game

GigglesO1 votes

You do basically Aram it down as soon as the first tower falls... I really wish it was the same strategy based game it used to be.

Ayanami3rd1 votes

Playing LoL as a newbie must be a really horrible experience. I myself remember how painful the first 100-200 games were, and I would not have touched it if I had not been constantly encouraged by friends with LOTS and LOTS of patience with my hard feed.

So yeah, the playerbase will constantly decline because of this very reason. Ads won't help there, Riot.

GigglesO1 votes

With how high damage right now is too, once you die once its basically lane over. In the earlier seasons you could be 2-3 kills down and you still could atleast farm. I just don't see a way to do anything but feed after that first death.

New strategy so they can say "player base is growing, this game is not dying so we can still fuck the game because people enjoy it"

JMoormann1 votes

Why would they lie to themselves though? If the gameplay changes have been killing the game since season 5/6 like the Boards say, you'd expect that they would have changed something by now.

After all, Riot doesn't really have anything to gain from killing their own game.

GigglesO3 votes

Because they don’t actually know what it was that made their game exciting to play. It wasn’t that it was super flashy, it was because it was a strategy game. Now they are just trying to change their game to grab attention at the LC$.

There is probably some cash grab strategy in the works.

Riot is trying to introduce new players into the game. It's obvious they are losing players and are trying to make up for it. Hence the missions, reworked tutorials (after over 6 years of asking), ads everywhere and pretty much every gameplay change since s6.

GigglesO7 votes

Word of mouth (aka friends) is the best advertising you can get too. For them to waste tons of money and time working on advertising probably does say something about their player base.

It’s suspicious that they haven’t released playerbase size in years.

Anin7772 votes

Word of mouth really is the best! Put 2 of my friends on Fortnite on the same day it came out. Since then, over 20 have joined.

Yeah! The last article regarding playerbase size was when they had the most concurrent players.

I mentioned this in a different post, but I actually tell anyone that asks me about the game that lol isn't worth trying. Honestly even my 7 year addiction starting in S1 is slowly coming to an end. I just get really really angry any time I play lol now. It isn't the game I came to love. The game is the same difference free cell is to solitaire. They are both card games, the goal to match up suits is completely the same, but it just isn't the same game.

Anin7772 votes

Lol I don't even tell people I play it. My friends thought I uninstalled it a while ago cos I was rarely online. I started in S2 around the release of Kha'Zix iirc. Fell in love with the game since then. Peaked at S5 where each game was like an epic battle. You felt good winning, you felt good losing cos you know the best team won. Then Dynamic queue in S6 made me start losing interest. gg

FilDaFunk18 votes

They're trying to attract players, finally realising their playerbase is decreasing.

I wonder when they'll realise the reason for this is their focus of LCS over playerbase.

Tim From Work6 votes

I'd argue it's the lack of any kind of focus, I mean runes reforged was definitely not aimed at lcs players

GigglesO4 votes

It kinda was for the audience of the LC$ because they were trying to make flashy faster paced games.

However these changes lead to less fighting and more warding, which lead to jungle wards removal, which lead to even less fighting, which lead to more vision changes like duskblade auto killing wards.

It also changed how the game was played in pros because you can’t take starting resistances that would allow you to survive in lane phase and farm for late game. Riot imagined quote~ “Now they have to fight”. This again created passivity. Why would you fight if you don’t know that you will win the trade. To top that off you no longer have enough vision to safeguard that the enemy jungle is isn’t nearby...

So it was for the pros, while the pros just didn’t respond how riot wanted.

How am I supposed to play with a friend who's new to the game when I couldn't even recommend they play the game in the first place due to how bad it currently is?

Nea1048 votes

I'm wondering exactly the same.

I’d be embarrassed to tell friends that I play league. I actually try to avoid the topic. I did have a few newer friends of friends try to play some games. They started and quit last season and retried the game this season.

This is their response as to why they don’t come back “This is why I quit in the first place, I’m not good at the game, and it’s not fun dying constantly”

It's like WoW vanilla/black crusade days all over again, where you just avoid the warlock player at a party that keeps going on about how AWESOME DAMAGE he is in his PvE alliance guild and try to pass as a normie.

On the other hand trying to learn the game through trial and error is a terrible idea Season 8 is actually good, it's just players shitting the bed so hard because the game thrives on optimization OR die. Faker is right in saying people just need to adapt. Problem with that is unseasoned players and casuals don't really know what adapting is.

The problem with this idea was that, league is pretty old now. Most players have been playing for years, and have already invited the people they know to play.

Literally all my friend's have tried league, the ones who like it are now above 15, the ones who don't, aren't going to suddenly like it because you gave out a quest for them to help me with (to no benefit of their own since I'm almost level 100).

Larriet8 votes

I've already met multiple (non-smurf) players, helped them learn, and completed this mission. I think it's less hard than you believe.

That said, I wish there was a better way to meet new players, but this seems to be encouraging people to get their friends to join.

riot thinks my lv 30+ ass even knows someone below lv 15

ISuckWithThresh2 votes

You added these people when you were at the same level as them. Now they are either 30+ or they left the game. So the only solution (for me atleast) is to ask a friend to make a smurf acc and play these games with me. Because no way in hell am I recommending this shitty game to my friends. Riot knows their game is dying so INSTEAD of fixing the issues this game has ,they are starting to promote it so new players come (Have you noticed the youtube ads about league recently ?). There is nothing wrong with that but they are pretty much showing their middle finger to the older players. (Just my opinion)

KCentra2 votes

This mission is sooo stupid... and I feel stupid playing XXX bot games trying to find someone lv 15 or less to team with me... ridiculous.. and at the end of the day - still haven't found someone to team up with.

GudLunchHavFries1 votes

"The only way to do this mission is with a smurf"

Believe it or not, new league players do still come every now and again. At my college campus there are a good amount of people that are new to the game, just to give an example.

The point is to encourage people to get their friends to play and help level them up together. New players are rare, but they aren't extinct.

yes, people WILL be using smurfs to complete it, that is unavoidable.

But the way the Op worded it, "only way to do this", implies that there are literally 0 new players in all of existence, which is absurd. If OP used a word other than only, I wouldn't be making this comment. But OP's choice of words imply that there is not a single new league player on earth.

Word of advice, if your making a post like this, use grammar that doesn't imply unrealistic things like this.

Word choice is important.

Saying "one of the only ways" would suffice.

But by OP saying "only way", that implies smurfs are 100% of new accounts. New players hardly come anymore, but to say that they don't exist is straight up decieving.

PopcornBunni2 votes

Read the next lines. I openly acknowledged that the bot missions are fine since they encourage teaching new players in the environment designed for them.

Winning a PVP game against smurfs though requires smurfs of your own.

GudLunchHavFries1 votes

Bot missions aren't exactly accurate in teaching new players at all. How are they going to learn the game playing bots if there is duo top, and they never have to worry about being ganked?

The point of it being PVP is to encourage someone to queue with a new player and show them the ropes, like what someone did with me when I first played many seasons ago.

So once again, saying it can literally only be done with smurf accounts is not entirely true.

Out of the few new players we still get, its still an unproper choice of grammar to assume that 100% of new players don't want to actively learn the game with a close friend to teach them.

People can't learn how to play league from bots. All it does is set unrealistic expectations.

So once again, your choice of grammar could be reworded to something more appropriate, as saying simply "only" like I mentioned, implies that literally 100% of the people that can realistically complete this mission are smurfs. While that is mostly true, wording it in a way that implies that 100% is the end all be all is misleading.

When your making a post, think about what your word choice implies in a literal manner.
