Question about playing the meta
I'm going to explain this in Rock-paper-scissors terms.
If Scissors is becoming so damn popular, why not play Rock instead of complaining that Scissors is too strong?

Because maybe that rock is very brittle and can easily get cut clean by them shiny strong scissors.
because the point of a meta to go along with your analogy is "well, scissors this patch is stronger than paper and rock, so let's play that."
The masses don't like trying new things until pros do it. At least that's one impression I got.
Just look at Urgot, or the current meta. The meta wasn't like it is before, it changed when pros did it and made it popular, and now nobody does anything else.
One thing people have done is combo bot lanes. One I've noticed is Brand and Lissandra(?), a fire and ice lane. Lots of cc and damage.
