Only true damage goes through his ult's reduction, so the Silver Bolt procs are the only thing he's gonna feel. Everything else is going to bounce off like you shot him with a shuttlecock.

thats only slightly more powerful than a normal ADC, because his flat resistance gain from Ult along with whatever tankiness he build means that only the silver bolt damage does more than tickle him

You must have never played as Vayne vs Alistar before :) Let me teach you a lesson right quick. The "dink-dink-dink-THUNK" is more like a "dink-dink-THUNK" because Silver Bolt procs every 3 autos, not 4. And that is happening roughly every 1.53 seconds. Plus, there is no max damage cap on champs. That is a good 900 damage in those three autos, on a full build Vayne vs a full build Alistar. It would take approx. 8 seconds to kill an Alistar, including the actual fighting, not just standing and autoing, without Vayne's ult. That being said, I do recognize that Alistar is an AMAZING tank vs many other adcs. TL;DR: Silver bolt does a lot more than "tickle" the cow. P.S. Corki is actually a good example of a counter to Alistar late game because of the flat true damage that his basic attacks do. Oh, and I think it's cute how you say that Vayne is "slightly more powerful than a normal ADC." Have a nice day :D

Sorry, I couldn't resist the extra "dink" in there, but you are totally right about it being 2 dinks in between thunks.

That said, the true damage procs for 8% max health, but I stand by my assertion that his ult plus whatever other resistances he has amassed really does mean that the true damage is the only part that doesn't tickle him. 70% reduction on top of about 70% natural reduction from resistances means that even if you are critting for about 1k normally (about what you have during your ult as Vayne since your build prioritizes attack speed), he takes about 140 damage per auto (1k reduced by 70% is 300, and 300 reduced by another 70% is 90, but not quite that low because of LW already, so roughly 140 for a crit), and then (assuming around 4K health, which is an average tank Alistar late game) 300-320 bonus damage every third auto. that means that it would take roughly 6 sets of silver bolt procs (3 AAs +1 proc of bonus damage for a maximum of about 700 damage if all three AAs crit per full set) to kill my Alistar, not counting spamming my heal frequently or having a Frozen heart/Randuins slowing your AS.

Your best case scenario still is only slightly better at killing a tanky Alistar, and once you throw in a heal for about 250hp at least once, as well as the AS slow reducing your attack speed from a generous 2.00 (which is higher than an average build) down to 1.7, and not getting crits every attack (meaning your "dinks" would only deal about ±60 damage each, all while I use my targeted dash+knockup combo to disable you for 2 extra seconds and I would end up living for at least 11-12 seconds. Surviving that long while drawing all of your attention is all my job entails, so I think Alistar wins this one.

EDIT: I forgot Ninja Tabi also reduce damage from every AA, which would leave you with even less damage from the "dinks". Another point of interest is that I very clearly said ONLY silver bolts does more than tickle him, and I totally agree that they are all that hurts him much.

You are right though, Vayne is far superior to most other ADCs vs an ulting Alistar, but only because she is the only one (other than the aforementioned Corki) who can damage him at all, not because she kills him in any quick fashion. Vayne as a champion is only slightly more powerful than most other ADCs, and only in the context of a 1v1 duel, otherwise she would be the most picked champion on the Pro scene because they only play the most winningest champions available.

Except for those awkward times you get blown up before you can press R. Then you just look like an jackass for 20 seconds because your entire team can see your ultimate is still up, and you have to try and lie your way out of it.

I still think it's silly that adcs are designed to be tank killers, but they kill tanks with raw dps+last whisper. They don't actually give up things to specialize into killing tanks, they just specialize into dealing damage and also kill tanks.

Meanwhile void staff ensures that casters also deal some damage to tanks, tanks need well over a minute out of combat with warmogs to get healthy again and dragon gives %damage increase. Tanks just become midgame gods and lategame initiators, probably best built with a hybrid of damage and tankiness for a full build.

The thing about fighting Tryndamere is, yes, if you try to kill him in a straight up slugfest post level 6, you're going to lose nine times out of ten. If you can kite him, then he's a lot more manageable, and he'll burn his ult and get nothing for it. I've demolished a Tryndamere as support Lulu, alone, consistently, with a combination of shields, slows, polymorphs, ulting and barrages of basic attacks at the right moment to whittle him down while he spent most of his ult as a squirrel.
