It's amazing how Riven can do 4 auto attacks and her 3 Q within 2 seconds yet called balanced

IsIsGankedParis··165 votes·10,088 views

This isn't intended at all, the animation cancelling, yet "Riven mains" will cry saying it is what makes Riven so strong as it's "hard" to do this.

How delusional are you people? This shouldn't ever happen, how the hell is it fair for her to do that much damage in lane then just disengage whenever she wants, and repeat this until she decides to kill you?

I want to make a joke about her having to buy attack speed like everybody else, but I always get downvoted to hell for it even in Riven QQ threads.

I don't get it.

Is it just not that funny? ;~;

Can I hear the joke? :3

Every time someone brings up Riven's animation cancelling, I just say "Maybe she ought to buy attack speed like everyone else?"

It's not really all that clever, but it didn't seem offensive.

The Riven hate on these boards is pretty unbearable sometimes. If Riven could not combo, she'd be shit tier. She has no base stats and a shield that lasts for a second and a half as her "defenses" she'd last a teamfight about how long I last in bed.

Saianna8 votes

Biased " If Riven could not combo, she'd be shit tier" opinions are biased.

How many players knows how to cancel animation? 20-30% of Riven players? So you say 70-80% that don't know this trick are trash tier?

Animation cancelling is not hard at all, provided you have stable ping.

LordForrest19 votes

You do realize the reason she isn't that good without animation canceling is because they nerfed her to compensate for the fact people could do that. Get rid of animation canceling, rebalance her stats and that should solve alot of the issues and actually broaden her player base to more then the people who do nothing but play her so they can take advantage of her animation canceling.

they cant remove animation cancelling. and even if they did, riven would be more of a little balerina than an actual champion, flailing around the battlefield while getting her shit rocked

uh, what? You do realize they can, its in how the coding interacts with each other.

the problem lies in the fact that to fix it requires more time and resources then they probably want to devote at this time.

Pretty much the same with pre-rework Heimer, nerf him so only the diehards bother playing him and leave him sit for several years

Then fix it and voila instant joy!

actually attack move is animation cancelling

LordForrest8 votes

No its not, at least not in league.

Originally it was orb-walking in DOTA and it worked because the attack was a spell, so they would use the spell move spell move. All it did was cut down on the lag or in laymans terms the part of the animation that was still playing but could be skipped because you were no longer locked out of motion or attacking without outright canceling the attack.

In league that doesn't exist like it did, but there is still the part of the animation that can be ended early without negative effects by issuing a move order immediately after the attack is fired.

And before you say i just described animation canceling, i didn't.

You are not actually cancelling the animation it still plays you are just overriding the unnecessary flourish with a move command.

On Riven it is actually animation canceling because of how the coding interacts.

Using her W for example this is the process of what happens. Her W has a animation that freezes her in place for the cast, while item 3077 can be cast without interruption. So basically you time it in such away that they play at the same time and item 3077s animation plays instead. This gives you the stun and damage of her w and the damage of Crescent with out the cast time.

This is an unintentional result of the coding, seeing as the different times they were added to the game, would make it very unlikely they would have noticed this interaction and fixed it. When it was finally figured out, it was at that point that they probably made an executive decision to not fix it seeing as the resources, time, and manpower could be better spent elsewhere in the game made even more relevant by them nerfing her to the point that she isn't the all around clear best choice and is only played a lot by her diehard fans.

The words animation canceling is a specific thing. Canceling your aa too soon means the damage doesn't go through, canceling riven's animations at any point doesn't matter because her damage does go through regardless of her animations. That's the difference. Orb walking for instance is at least gated by forcing most of the animation to go through, animation canceling on riven is not.

go into a game with nautilus if you have him. His auto attack animation is long as fuck. Im pretty sure you can cancel that animation with his e. Zed can cast his E while auto attacking and doesnt cancel the auto attack. Rengar can literally cast all of his spells mid leap. renekton also uses hydra to cancel w animation. Khazix can w+e to cancel the animation of his w. There is a pretty long list of champions that use animation cancelling, they just arent as prominent as riven. And yes orb walking IS animation cancelling because you are preventing the animation of the auto attack by moving in order to keep up with the target. You cancel the animation of your auto attacks, that is why it is called ANIMATION CANCELLING.

SouL1ess4 votes

And yes orb walking IS animation cancelling because you are preventing the animation of the auto attack by moving in order to keep up with the target.

No.

You are canceling backswing, not cast point.

Cast point is not the same as backswing.

Cancelling cast point causes the ability to not play, due to the animation being interrupted. It is a balancing factor in skills, especially in DotA. It is an effective delay to abilities that may be overpowered, or cannot be respond to properly by enemy players, if it can be cast too quickly.

Backswing is the flourish after casting and has no penalty whatsoever associated with it. In fact, it is always beneficial to cancel backswing because it doesn't do anything.

Orbwalking cancels the backswing of your attack so you don't waste time standing around for the backswing animation to finish and cover distance until the next time your autoattack finishes CD.

If Orbwalking cancelled cast points, ADCs would be ranged Swains, shooting their AA missiles at you WHILE walking around. And that's not how it works.

AMYS GRAVE3 votes

If you break down an ability or an auto attack it goes through 4 parts

cast --- animation --- damage --- backswing

go into a game with nautilus if you have him. His auto attack animation is long as fuck. Im pretty sure you can cancel that animation with his e.

his AA damage doesn't go through if you do this. If you are doing it on the backswing then that isn't animation canceling because you have already had to go through the animation phase and you are backswing canceling.

Zed can cast his E while auto attacking and doesn't cancel the auto attack.

his AA damage doesn't go through if you do this. or you have to go through his AA animation anyway if you want it to hit which isn't animation canceling because the damage has already gone through.

Rengar can literally cast all of his spells mid leap.

his leap isn't a damaging spell, if you cast abilities during his leap his aa animation will reset upon arrival and you will get one less aa off. working as intended.

renekton also uses hydra to cancel w animation.

yes hydra is part of the problem

Khazix can w+e to cancel the animation of his w.

if his spikes are in the air then you are in the backswing phase of this spell, by then you are free to do what you want see explanation below, that isn't animation canceling its backswing canceling.

There is a pretty long list of champions that use animation cancelling, they just arent as prominent as riven.

none of them will still get the damage to go through when you animation cancel though, and that's the point, if you animation cancel on other champs (tiamat excluded) the damage doesn't go through. on riven it does.

And yes orb walking IS animation cancelling because you are preventing the animation of the auto attack by moving in order to keep up with the target. You cancel the animation of your auto attacks, that is why it is called ANIMATION CANCELLING.

If you immediately cancel the auto attack the damage doesn't go through.

orb walking is issuing a canceling command during the backswing phase and that is not animation canceling

riven can cancel during the animation phase, hence animation canceling, but the damage still goes through.

any other ability that tries this has its damage canceled as well. you don't have to wait for the backswing to finish, but you do have to wait through the animation phase if you want to damage your target.

If there is any delay between cast and damage, then you must wait to issue another command until after the damage has gone through. that is why there is a delay at all otherwise all spells would be instantaneous.

How would you increase her skill cap then? I don't want everyone and their mom being able to play Riven effectively. I've played over 350 games as Riven and I worked pretty hard at learning her combos, I'm still not perfect at animation cancelling, but I want some compensation for increasing skill cap. Riven's design was based on Mortal Kombat. People who don't want to play Mortal Kombat Riven just don't want to play Riven. Some, like you, want Riven to be changed so that they can play her without actually having to learn how to play Mortal Kombat Riven.

Who cares though? Why should anyone care about some whiny guy who doesn't like the way a champion is played, but wants it changed so that people who don't want to play her as she is can do so?

I'm sorry, are you under the impression that Riven using animation canceling forces others to do it too? Because the enemy Renekton or Garen doesn't have to play Mortal Kombat to play against Riven.

Seriously though. Quit whining. There is no valid reason to lower Riven's skill requirement while buffing the rest of her kit. It would change literally nothing for players who can actually play her well (except making it so that they no longer enjoy her, but who cares about that right? Fuck those people, right?), and only make it so that worse Rivens can pubstomp more easily with her. No one wins.

Whether the animation canceling itself was intentional or not (never seen it proven), that Riven's gameplay was inspired by fighting games is a fact.

Mechanical skill has a place in the game, and isn't unique to Riven. Champions like Lee Sin, Zed, and Vayne also get brought up as champions who require a great deal of mechanical skill to use to full effect.

I'm saying it does not belong in lol,and it doesn't.

Why should anyone care about what you arbitrarily think belongs in League of Legends?

Skillcap should stem from decisions, not mashing keys fast.

You're repeating yourself. What about mechanical skill bothers you so much?

THE CHAMPION WILL WORK THE EXACT SAME WAY,you just won't be able to be an elitist douche about mashing keys.

"You" lol.

I'll let you in on a little secret:

I main Darius.

I have played Riven in normals I think like seven times. I have never played her in ranked. I have no problem with people that use mechanically simple champions. Riven players that aren't waifu-fapping losers with micropenis (a rarity these days, perhaps) also don't. I also don't think there is anything wrong with people who prefer playing champions that require mechanical skill and practice to use proficiently, nor would I want to change a champion that they like simply because I don't enjoy them. Because that would make me a selfish douche.

That's basically just calling her faceroll op and that her only difficulty is mashing keys, nerf her then.

I don't think you understand what I just said.

If you took away Riven's animation canceling, but buffed her numbers, in higher elos she probably wouldn't experience any significant change in success. In lower elos however, with lower skilled players, Riven would become an invincible pub stomper who made lower level players cry.

So why do you want to lower Riven's skill floor and buff her numbers?

manbearswine5 votes

{quoted}

Whether the animation canceling itself was intentional or not (never seen it proven), that Riven's gameplay was inspired by fighting games is a fact.

"inspired by fightining games" and "will have an idiotic mechanic" are two very different things.

Mechanical skill has a place in the game, and isn't unique to Riven. Champions like Lee Sin, Zed, and Vayne also get brought up as champions who require a great deal of mechanical skill to use to full effect.

Yes,but for every single one of those said mechanical skill comes from the fact that your abilities simply need to be used fast,it's not artificial the way it is with riven, non of them has a mechanic which can be made automatic without removing decision making and options, riven does.

Why should anyone care about what you arbitrarily think belongs in League of Legends?

Because games are built with certain intentions, league is made to be focused on decision making and teamplay, mortal kombat is built on clicking keys in a certain order(and a lot of other things, but that's not the point)/

You're repeating yourself. What about mechanical skill bothers you so much?

Mechanical skill is fine, artifical mechanical skill, that which is there for no reason, that is something else entirely, hell, why do you think this game has an option to quick cast? why not test the abilities of players to click fast here too?

it doesn't belong in the game, even dota added quick cast to it.

Once again, you can always just make the option of auto cancelling animations optional(like quick cast),so that people can still play mortal kombat riven if they want to,you just won't be forcing it on people who don't want to.

"You" lol.

I'll let you in on a little secret:

Again, mechanical skill is fine, artificially enforced mechanical skill is not.

I don't think you understand what I just said.

If you took away Riven's animation canceling, but buffed her numbers,

Didn't say buff her numbers,I said it can be removed one way or another,as in,remove it and make her go through her animations and buff her numbers,or remove her animations.

in higher elos she probably wouldn't experience any significant change in success. In lower elos however, >with lower skilled players, Riven would become an invincible pub stomper who made lower level players cry.

first of all, that's a lot of guessing, this could very easily not happen, riven has other things increasing her skillcap aside from needing to mash keys in a certain way for extra power.

So why do you want to lower Riven's skill floor and buff her numbers?

Because skill floor/cap should not be artificial,if it doesn't create more decisions to be made, remove it,it does not belong in this game.

A good comparison(which someone else made somewhere,I forgot) would be to reduce karthus ult damage by 25%,but make it deal 40% extra damage if he types "Roit pls grant me more damages for this ult of mine" while channeling, think what kind of support such a proposal will get. does it increase his skillcap? sure. Is it completely retarded? definitely, these sort of mechanics do not belong in this game.

Hyrum Graff2 votes

I'm not sure I understand the difference between "mechanical skill" and "artificially enforced mechanical skill"?

Feathermane14 votes

I would argue the opposite. If a champion needs an exploit to compete with the rest of the roster, that means she is pretty godawful to begin with.

LankPants14 votes

But that same exploit makes it impossible to buff Riven from "godawful" status since if you did anyone using it would be impossible to play against.

Without her damage, she's nothing. In lane just make her dive into your minions, you'll win the trade.

With two lifesteal items then, she is impossible to duel, especially if she has at least one resistance item (ex: item 3026 item 3156 item 3143) to complement all that lifesteal, and her shield (as both count as effective health).

Wukong may have quite a bit of damage, but his early game is pretty mediocre. Given, he has escape in his W and E, but he can be easily bullied out of lane early on.

Could you say the same for Riven? Even if you say she is easy to deal with, it doesn't change how poorly designed her kit is, to the point where her success completely relies on the exploitation of a glitch.

Wukong is better than Riven, lol.

Is he as big of a bully as Riven? Probably not. But he scales harder, is better in team fights, and if put behind is way more useful than a Riven that was put behind. He also consistently has a higher win rate, currently the highest in top lane.

I really don't understand how people can't seem to recognize how strong Wukong really is.

BetaDude404 votes

To be honest, I have not played Wukong in a very long time. I'm probably not the person to talk about him, as really I haven't seen many people play with him recently.

Although winrate isn't the only thing, you also gotta factor in the play rate and all that fun stuff. It could just be a situation where only the mains that are very good with him play him. (Although the total damage you can pull off on his ult is really crazy)

It could just be a situation where only the mains that are very good with him play him.

This is what's happening with Riven, actually. Over 60% of her players in ranked could be called mains, and her win rate when mastered is nothing spectacular. It is solely her incredible, outlier level of experienced players, that keeps her winrate up at all.

http://champion.gg/champion/Riven Inexperienced Rivens have a winrate of 43% today. It was 42% a couple days ago. This is the usual range it sits at. Her winrate at 125+ games, when effectively mastered? 55%. You can compare this to other high damage melee champions from top lane and it comes out as middle of the top shelf for mastery. http://champion.gg/champion/Wukong New Wukongs have a 51% win rate and masters 56%.

Wukong is better in the hands of new, and experienced players. He does most of what Riven does better, except split push, and he's much better in team fights.

He has the sixteenth highest play rate of the meta top laners, out of 56.

It is true that a significant portion of Wukong players (almost thirty percent) are Wukong mains, but even players who have only played him 1-5 times have an average win rate of 51.56%.

It sounds pretty interesting. I may just look at him over the coming weekend and see why he is this strong. I'm assuming the armor shred on his Q plus the jukes with his W and one-way engage/escape on E can lead to a pretty interesting combination.

Thanks for the info! Do you have a source where I can see more of this kind of stuff?

The main reason Wukong is so powerful is his ult IMO. Its incredible synergy with black cleaver, great scaling damage (the highest scaling AD damage ability in the game), and potential five man knock up is huge in team fights. His passive also makes him deceptively tanky, even when being builty as a carry.

The armour shred on his Q, his ability to outplay with his W (enemy Caitlyn players aren't allowed to have fun), and his E are just icing on the cake. Wukong is very good.

And yet how hard are those two to deal with? Darius isn't anything but a lane bully that has to build flat tank later on if he can't keep up, because his late game scaling is pretty bad.

And I don't care what your argument is, don't be a fucking asshole to people.

LOL do you realize that you can't do the fast combo in 90% situations? you opponent needs to stand still for 3 seconds in order to do it and normal combo is a lot better in trades since you can cancel 2 of your opponents autoattacks if you time 3rdQ+W right. Go watch boxbox and see how often he does the fast combo, its only useful on jungle monsters since they don't move.

You see, if I had never fought against a Riven before, I might've believed you.

But I have fought against them, oh boy I have. Seriously, the animation cancels were half of the reason she won fights against me, the other half being that I had no physical ability to run once she started her CC and gapclosing.

Nice of you to resort to trying to trash me because of my rank.

I do not play ranked.

I never intend on climbing, for I have no reason to.

I've been into matches with Rivens before. In some unlucky cases where I get a higher ranked player on my team, they will also have one or a few higher ranked players. The times I've fought Riven have only proven how astounding the reset mechanic is.

Now, if you want to pin it all on "You're a Bronze noob", then go right ahead. Because if you do that, I know that your entire argument has been flawed as you try and use an authoritative fallacy.

Riven is already pretty strong, but she's even more strong with the animation cancelling.
