I played against him as Yorick (I think 2 days ago now) and had a pretty good time. As others have said, just avoided him when he had empowered Q. To a certain extent, it's okay to let him control the lane, because he'll start to fall off if you just cs when you can and don't die to him early. Let him push in and call your jungler. Same story as with most lane bullies, really.

Stand in your minions when trading with him. He has low damage outside of empowered Q so he generally loses when he regularly trades. Plus it makes it harder for him to E you.

Only trade when he Q's without empowered strike. When it's empowered he gains significantly more damage and his healing is increased substantially if he uses it on a champion instead of a player.

Then late-game if he flanks you're kinda fucked but your team should be watching for that anyways.

Some things you can do to make Vlad's life hell:

  • Rush Grievous Wounds
  • Body block his E with minions or champion summoned units (like Voidlings)
  • Don't go near or trade with him when he has Crimson Rush available (indicated by his resource bar becoming red) or while it's charging (after he uses a second Q)
  • Exploit his weak early game (all a Vlad wants to do is trade when his Q is empowered, and farm).
  • Punish him whenever his W is off cooldown
  • %HP damage (he gets HP by building AP)

Question from a similarly burdened player: what visual queues should I be looking for when looking out for his empowered Q? I honestly don't know a whole lot about Vlad.

If you're playing a tank you can always try buying a spectre's cowl. That usually helps me against magic damage harass.
