why does autofill prioritize over fill?
i want to get a role that someone else cant play by filling, but they still get autofilled..

The system doesn't actually know what players would prefer once it goes to fill or autofill. RIOT should be having players declare preference over all roles and not just two roles at most.
Good point. But honestly picking 5 roles in order is so much more effort I'd rather just go back to pick order bc I'm lazy lol
True, but you could have a set or something that you do before hand kinda like a rune page so you just pick that set. Like I normally pick either bot/mid or sup/bot, so I could have a bot/mid/sup/top/jungle set and a sup/bot/mid/top/jungle set that would take care of 90% of my games except when I'm practicing my top/jungle game.
OR maybe have a default low 3 that you set up on your profile again like a rune page so that if you are a top/jungle main it will automatically put the rest in whatever order is stated there.
Or maybe just define your preference for all roles in your profile so that if you get auto filled, it tries to put you into one role that you might be ok at instead of instantly placing you in one of your worst roles.
Even when fill isn't involved it falls on it's face sometimes. I've had games where I had declared support/fill and someone else got autofilled support when they had the role I was filled into declared as one of their preferred roles. The system is a mess.
Yeah, the sooner they implement preferences over all roles the better it will be. Autofill was a step in the right direction, now they just need to polish it up with a way players can clearly indicate those crucial preferences over all roles.
It was a big error to design for only two role preferences - a really ginormous error - but I know they wanted to make the game better.
It was one of the things they discussed but "Fill" was supposed to be a no hassle option. You can play anything so there's no need to choose yourself. You can adapt. If you would've been given to pick your preferred roles when you pick Fill (organized list or roles by pref.), it would've been just easier to pick two roles and get Autofilled because it doesn't matter to you.
Yeah, that was probably the thinking they had when they designed it this way... which is why it was a failure at launch.
It turns out that it actually does matter! Which may seem sort of obvious, but I can see how they would fall into the design they fell into.
This does happen more offten then you might think. Ive picked flll before expecting to get support, but no i got filled mid, and the support had picked mid but got autofilled support. Autofill is such a trash system, it creates many more problems than it solves (at least at low elo like gold and below)
Yeah, the other way was really bad at every rank. Autofill was a huge improvement. There really isn't any contest which way is better. Fill went from being practically meaningless to being somewhat meaningful. Role Exclusion was one of the worst ideas RIOT ever implemented in ranked.
Not to belittle your experience but anecdotal evidence like yours leaves out the vast majority of the time that autofill does it's job well. However, anecdotal evidence like yours is still very valuable bc it shows that there's room for improvement, even in a system that works most of the time.
The most valuable aspect of autofill imo is that I rarely see people fighting over roles anymore and it's a lot easier to develop strategies before the game even starts because of it. I like this and I want this to stay.
But thats because people complained about "Fill". People were complaining that "Fill" = "Support", reducing the number of players who would go"Fill" if it meant an even distribution of roles. How many posts did we see a few months ago that said, "I dont mind supporting 1/5 games, but going 'Fill' and getting 'Support' 100% of the time makes me not want to 'Fill'"?
Its illogical to blame Riot for actually fixing the problem. Now when you "Fill" it sometimes really does feel like a random chance for any role. Someone might get autofilled into support, but it fixed the problem the boards were in an uproar about - that 99% of the time, going "Fill" meant going "Support".
There is no excuse for matchmaker to put someone who asked for "Fill" on Mid when someone who picked "Mid" gets autofilled.
That's just faked variety. It's a lie.
Everybody knows that autofill = support. So youre saying if youre "Fill", you should go Support? Cause thats what happened 6 months ago - everybody who went Fill got Support, and nobody wanted to Fill (except support mains) because of it.
the autofill system is against logic and poorly made due to it being rushed as a bandaid solution to long queue time, and rito havent bothered fixing it, that is why.
No, that isn't the case. They have discussed and explored many options but it always comes at a price of increasing complexity and time for the pre-queue experience. They could make a half hour questionnaire about how you'd like to play the game, which role and whatnot to make sure you get what you want but increasing the preference count makes the queue times longer by default.
The more boxes you have to put the players with various preferences in, the more time it takes for the matchmaker to find you that perfect team you signed up for. Likewise, one universal box would mean that the matchmaker would take no time finding you a team but at the cost of having constant clownfiestas.
##The solution isn't to make the matchmaker ridiculously simple or overly complex. Balance needs to be set at a point where both queue times are reasonable and teams are on equal grounds.
The autofill system was made to (in theory) decrease queue time, but what in fact happens is: autofill=average 5 dodges per game=much longer time to get into a game
autofill=people get put to roles they don't play=poor quality 10 minute open mid=toxicity
The solution to long queue time is to make bot lane(adc and support are two least wanted roles) more enjoyable to play, not force someone to play it.
Does this actually happen? I haven't seen this happen, and I fill pretty much all the time.
All the time, it's why I ask if anyone was autofilled and wants to trade when Im filling.
I ask that too, but usually I don't get anyone who wants to swap.
I agree, it's so dumb. So many times I'm placed top (one of my worst roles) and the top lane main is autofilled to support. I don't get that. If I have fill and they put top pref, why am I placed top?
I've only noticed complete role nonsense when i get autofill and stay in queue after a dodge. Most of the time you stay with the same group you just had and it will keep the autofilled role into the next champion select. Considering sometimes you get like 10 champ select dodges in a row i think that's when things get really screwed up or people complain about 'getting autofilled all the time.' I hit fill for normals often and as far as my experience has been it's still just 99% sup.
Because Riot likes to cuck people. Every game I have nowadays in ranked, theres at least 2 people asking for a different role because they were auto filled. And a lot of times it will be the bot laner asking to mid because he got auto filled, and then the mid will say he queued for bot and what not.
What? I don't understand what you're asking.
I think they mean that when they choose "fill" as their role, they still somehow end up with someone who was auto filled in their lobby, even though "fill" is supposed to fill in any missing roles.
Oh, okay then.
As best as can be deduced by community, it doesn't. Strictly speaking.
What the system does appear to do is fill roles one-at-a-time. So if it has a team that needs a mid, and you're next in line, it will throw you in mid. If that team then still needs a support, and the next few in line aren't a fill or support, then the next person gets auto-filled. Even though that person queued mid/top, both those positions were already filled. Once it has a full team, it throws you into champ select, without ever double checking preferences.
Bare in mind though, this is all speculation. Riot hasn't officially released the inner working of the system.
So what you mean to say is that if you Fill, you want to be used as the filler for the potential missing role, sparing your teammates from having to autofill?
I don't think that the matchmaking system specifically looks for "Fill" players to match with certain teams. Autofill is turned on for everyone when they press the button, your role preference is your individual preference on how you want to play the game. Every other player does the same.
Back when everyone was expected to play 5 roles the game was a lot more fun to play. People had a much better understanding of theory crafting and board control.
I got auto'd to jungle last night and I was like, I'm gonna play someone new cause I don't have any freaking junglers cause all I ever play is support. And after watching our support kill our adc 4 times in a row I switched to roaming support. So no matter what lane I get put in, it seems I'm always stuck going back to support.
