Ekko vs. other mid laners (and some simple math)

Lao Fu the Tiger··19 votes·2,655 views

Recently there have been countless complains about Ekko with regards to his damage in particular. Many of these threads are talking about his ratios between his three basic skills, and people are beginning to acknowledge that his ultimate is used more often as an escape rather than as a nuke, so the damage there is omitted.

The threads recently have been complaining about his burst in comparison with other mid laners and talking about his strength with the damage output from his basic spells pre-6. Of course, people also complain about his highly situational, literally impossible-to-aim-only-hits-if-the-enemy-deserves-it ultimate damage as well, but we'll focus on his three basic abilities at max rank since those are at least somewhat reliable.

NOTE: I'm not talking about escapes or mobility here; this is a response to threads that are complaining about Ekko's damage. Mobility and safety I'll save for another topic.

Without further ado, in no particular order!

Ekko - 120 (+20% AP) + 160 (+60% AP) + 170 (+20% AP) + X(+70% AP) + (50% AP). I even included Lich Bane.

  • 450 + X + 2.2 AP with Lich Bane.
  • 450 + X + 1.7 AP without.
  • 290 + X + 1.1 AP without landing both halves of Q (which is quite easy to dodge).

Annie - 220 (+ 80% AP) + 250 (+ 85% AP) + 425 (+ 80% AP) + 40 (+ 20% AP). Admittedly, since this uses Annie's ult, this may not be an apples to apples comparison at all. But heck, we'll include it anyway.

  • 935 + 2.65 AP with Tibbers.
  • 515 + 1.65 AP without.
  • Result - Near identical burst; Annie's burst combo is much more safe, as it can be cast from range. Furthermore, her basic combo is MUCH more reliable.

Ahri - 280 (+ 70% AP) + 224 (+ 64% AP) + 200 (+ 50% AP).

  • 704 + 1.84 AP without ult.
  • Result - All skillshots, but hey, if you land Charm, you land them all, and Ahri's combo is both more reliable and more safe as well as more bursty than Ekko with a Lich Bane. (Her overall game safety can be comparable as well, but we'll leave that out of this thread)

Xerath - 200 (+ 45% AP) + 180 (+ 60% AP) + 240 (+ 75% AP).

  • 620 + 1.8 AP without ult.
  • Result - Comparable damage from MUCH further range, Xerath has just as much burst and about 3x the safety of Ekko without his ult at all times.

Lux - 260 (+ 70% AP) + 240 (+ 60% AP) + 500 (+ 75% AP) + X*20% AP. I include her ultimate in this one because the cooldown is a joke late game. She does suffer high mana costs, but in return gets a ton of safety.

  • 1000 + 2.25 AP total.
  • Result - Her AP ratios may not be the highest, but with base damages like these, who needs ratios? Great burst, safe distance, but does indeed suffer from mana problems.

Swain - 255 (+ 90% AP) + 240 (+ 70% AP) + 282 (+96% AP) + X * 90 (+ 20% AP). I love playing Swain. Unrelated side note.

  • 867 + 2.76 AP for a single crow.
  • 1047 + 3.16 AP for three crows, which is average if you land a snare.
  • Result - I'm biased here, but Swain's sustain combined with two targeted spells does a lot of work.

Velkoz - 240 (+ 60% AP) + 275 (+ 62.5% AP) (we'll assume you only hit one with his knockup) + 190 (+ 50% AP) + 900 (+ 60% AP). Again, like Annie, this is more apples and oranges, but a normal combo is the same, just without his ult. We can take that out to please some folks. This does not include his true damage passive.

  • 1605 + 2.33 AP with R.
  • 705 + 1.73 AP without.
  • Result - A safer combo, for sure. And landing the knockup with him is roughly AS difficult as landing both procs of Q on Ekko. I'd say the damage is pretty fair overall, with Vel'koz having a greater lane presence with his incredibly low mana costs combined with his innate waveclear with W.

Veigar - 260 (+ 60% AP) + 320 (+ 100% AP) + 500 (+ 100% AP) + (OMGWTFBBQ 80% your AP). May as well add another 10% to everything since he'll have a ton more AP than you in the first place.

  • 1080 + 2.6 AP without opponent AP.
  • 580 + 1.6 AP on basic rotation
  • Result - Comparable damage at a much safer range.

Basically, what I'm trying to demonstrate here is that Ekko's damage falls right in line with other popular mid lane champions once you add in the X from his passive and the on-hit effects from a Lich Bane. His basic ability damage is nothing special, and let's be honest, if you get hit by his ult from walking on it, you probably deserved to get hit. There are notable exceptions with regards to Ekko's visibility in brush and whatnot, but generally speaking, if Ekko engages, he has to wait an entire 4 seconds before he can even consider popping you for his ult damage. So when talking damage, it's usually best to leave it out of the equation for burst. Even WITH the ultimate though, his damage would fall right along with other mages. In the end, when it comes down to strictly damage, Ekko falls right in the "average/balanced" category, and nothing more.

For random fun, let's calculate at what AP Ekko's ult would match a fully hit Vel'koz ult. 500 + 1.3x = 900 + 0.6x = 571 AP. Moral of the story is, high scaling doesn't necessarily mean higher damage, especially early to mid game, where Ekko's ult does only 200 base damage.

There are many other crowd favourite mid laners I could have also used, but I think these few serve my point. :)

I almost feel like that's the issue; given the other advantages Ekko offers, the fact that his damage is also pretty much on par seems problematic. Ahri might have been the best comparison for your argument; if anything it looks like the other mages are underpowered by comparison (which doesn't seem to be the case in actual practice).

Maybe I'm just projecting a bit of disappointment to how Ekko has turned out so far; he seems to weigh too heavily on the "assassin" part of "utility assassin". Maybe things will change in the future, I dunno.

Lao Fu the Tiger2 votes

Well, if I was being honest, his damage is actually a fair bit weaker than other mages if you check them. His 1.7 scaling is average at best, nothing special. His base damages are on the low side of average. It's nothing special at all.

Now, when we look at his utility, the most reliable thing he has is a slow on his Q. His W is a big zone, yes, but in a teamfight situation it's really no more or less impactful than Veigar's cage or a number of shorter, more easily landed skillshots. Now I know that in a hectic teamfight it creates a terrifying zone, so I'm not downplaying it, but 3 seconds IS a long time to predict where the opponent might be. By comparison, Annie has an immediate stun (which everyone hates), and others have CC that is much less guesswork and more player skill.

That's why in my opinion I don't see him as very overpowered as some people have made him out to be. Yes, he can snowball, and yes, he should do a decent amount of damage. And as an assassin, yes, a little mobility is necessary to try and get to the backline. But when it comes to his ability to assassinate people, his raw damage output to single targets doesn't come close to LeBloink, Akali, or others, and his AOE is very hit or miss.

If threads pop up regarding his utility, I'll make threads that direction as well. :)

My end-all goal isn't to bash people who think he's powerful; he is, and he should be under the right hands. But from a strictly damage standpoint, he's just... average. Plus, he has to throw himself into the fight with zero escape when his ult is down. Or poke. Weakly. From the sidelines.

MrBuffington6 votes

That's why in my opinion I don't see him as very overpowered as some people have made him out to be.

Hyperbole is pretty rampant here; circlejerk opinions snowball harder than any champion Riot could ever make.

I wish there was greater visibility on his W from the enemy's perspective, I feel like it's a stun you should only land if you wombo it with something or if the enemy honestly doesn't know what it is and stands in the middle of it.

Also minor book-keeping, I don't think you mentioned the ratio on his W passive, as well as just including missing HP damage; it can be pretty significant.

My only significant complaint about Ekko is that he snowballs too well; Riot seems to be aware of this, which is why I'm not complaining too much (they nerfed him in this direction while he was still on PBE; they felt too minor to have significant impact, but still in the right direction imo).

Lao Fu the Tiger2 votes

The W damage somebody calculated to be roughly 40% AP at all stages of the game. The problem with talking about it is that it only takes effect once the opponent is below 30% HP; at that low of a percentage, nobody should be in lane anyway, much less against an assassin. If he happens to get somebody that low, the best course of action is just to recall. But yeah, I agree, people love to overplay things before they get a chance to even see how to play against them.

MrBuffington2 votes

The problem would be getting the chance to recall; Ekko can all-in fairly easily, and he's got a lot of sticking power between his slows and speed buffs. If he's just poking you down with Q, then yes, you should probably recall if you're low, especially since he can dive your turret pretty easily if he has ult

Lao Fu the Tiger2 votes

Eh, I agree and disagree. With his ult, yeah he can all-in easily and get that last hit. Realistically though, "poking you down with Q" is something that Ziggs, Xerath, Ahri, Annie, Katarina, Leblanc, Vel'koz and Lux do with much more ease and effectiveness.

MrBuffington2 votes

Oh, I was talking about how the Ekko you're hypothetically facing is playing, not how he's "supposed" to be played. If you're at 30% HP facing Ekko in lane, chances are he's already on top of you, and you really don't have a chance to recall unless you can drive him away; if not, he was probably just poking with Q (or any number of other situations; I think poking would be the most common though).

Lao Fu the Tiger1 votes

Oh. Yeah, that makes sense. He's a sticky little bugger.

Llanite1 votes

I don't see why can't you recall? He has no other special move to avoid turret. If you move back to 2nd tower to recall, he can't do anything, if you're still around the 1st one, EVERYONE will dive you @30% HP.

MrBuffington1 votes

If he's on top of you beating you with auto attacks? No you can't recall...

Davy Crockett1 votes

Correct me if I'm wrong please but doesn't Ekko's W only grant a stun and a shield, not damage? BTW, I love this post so much. (upvoted)

Lao Fu the Tiger1 votes

His W is where the execute damage comes in. That's all. :)

Awesome. Thanks for the clarification.

So what the OP is saying is that Ekko is ONLY on par with some of the nastier burst mages in the game... That seems fair, I mean all those other champs also have his massive utility and insane kit, right?

What's that you say? Most of those champs are extremely immobile? And they don't have any shields or escapes to save themselves from bad positioning? At least a few of them do have some CC like he does, I'll give you that... but they almost all lack his durability (His ult heal and his shield) or his mobility. This is a minor thing since it's insanely common now on the new champs but he's untouchable by melee champs too. He stacks more permaslow than Skarner ever did... at a RANGE. And they forced a terrible rework on skarner over it.

Ekko is the equal in damage of a bunch of other mages who are FAR more vulnerable and less versatile than he is. THAT is the problem. He can do what they do and then a ton more. If all he had was damage, no one would care. People care because he has a kit that seems to lack any weaknesses whatsoever in addition to putting him on par with more risky picks in damage.

Also, BM not including his ult's damage in the numbers you posted. Yeah it's awkward to land but it's HUGE and it's the reason he turns fights around. If you're gonna say that it shouldn't factor in because it's hard to land then take out most of Lux's damage, since her Q is pretty easily dodged. Should probably remove Veiger's E too, because not even Faker can land that thing unless your enemy is afk. You can't cherry pick the numbers to make your point. I mean... you CAN. Statistics is all about presenting info in the skewed way to back your point... but you shouldn't, damn it.

So yeah, Ekko is a little under par some of the game's most powerful burst mages in damage. Oh, unless he lands his ult... which we didn't add in and scales so well that it'll hit like a train. And in return for this sacrifice of a tiny bit of the damage they can do (unless he lands ult, of course) he got more utility than most supports get, and mobility that makes Lee Sin proud.

Seems fair, yo.

3TWarrior2 votes

yep, because an aoe that's nearly invisible while not in the brush is hard to land when it is as big as nasus E and the opposing team has to back off while he gets free damage, no assassin does that, even singed(a tank) has to lead them a very long distance to get ekko's "do not chase" damage in, and his ult's aoe is huge, just a little smaller than Zigg's ult

if you want hard to land, try xerath's ult, pantheon's long channel ult, veigar's W, karthus to where his Q actually does any damage...I think chogath got stealth nerfed because his range feels less on his Q, skarner's skill shot and ult are fairly hard to land in a team fight...there are plenty of things way harder than ekko's massive area denial capability

Divewing1 votes

I agree with OP's statement about his ultimate, it has perhaps the most obvious warning sign in the game, and is at a fixed location that ekko can only control as far as his movements beforehand (ie: he needs to be able to, in essence, either predict where someone will be, or bait someone into a favourable position, 4 seconds into the future). That is not easy, and if you are hit by it, most likely scenario was that it was your own fault for ignoring/disrespecting it.

I'll put this scenario to you, you see Talon op his ultimate to try and get the jump on you from the stealth/movespeed boost. Are you going to sit there and let it come?

see the problem with that logic is the fact that all ekko has to do in teamfights is run away from the enemy through his team mates, then youve effectively nullified the possibility of the enemy team securing kills in the teamfights, after just a few seconds of skirmishing, because then they have two choices, split apart/back up, or get nuked for over 1k damage each, its easy to say "oh its so obvious just dodge it" in theory, but under even the slightest scrutiny that argument doesnt hold any weight at all.

So in essence: leave your team in a 4v5 for 4 seconds for the sole purpose of landing your ultimate......?

nah man, your literally gunna be at their backline like an adc, where you can still throw out every ability minus the dash, and then after 3 seconds the enemy team already has to make a split second choice, how is this too complicated for you to picture in your head?

Divewing1 votes

What i find complicated, is how anyone on this earth would simply see an Ekko jump into their team so he can set up his clone, and just let him turn around. All for what? a potential 5 man ultimate? Forgive me but it seems like a really stupid decision as a way to play Ekko, it'd be much easier to jump in intermittently using your ultimate to jump out after the first skill rotation and you know, SKIRMISH, that thing Riot said they DESIGNED HIM FOR. Have you played Ekko at all?

Utility?

In lane, Annie can easily hold her stun and zone with it. Durability is slightly weaker, just a minor thornmail on her. Point and click AOE cc on demand thou, slightly makes up for it.

Ahri, after her buffs, her q has amazing utility. You can't honestly tell me that you haven't laned against an Ahri, and the free ms from her Q isn't incredibly strong. Again, durability is slightly weaker, only 3 dashes and a large ms buff.

Xerath, Lux, and Vel'koz lack targetted cc, mobility, and durability, for a large range increase. You can argue that, but I consider range to be worth the trade.

Swain... Sustain, slows, snares, % amplification.

In regards to his durability, his shield tends to be more proactive then reactive. If he gets caught out, he has to ult, or die. He won't be able to save himself with his shield. Relating his perma-slow to skarners, you realize he has to hit his Q, right? From range, it's incredibly hard to land both portions. I'll agree, he has a lot more versatility than other mages do, in return for a significantly larger amount of counterplay. Annie dropping tibbers doesn't have much counterplay. Ahri using charm from melee range tends to be hard to dodge. Xerath and friends are all skill shots, but when they can fill the air with skillshots, they're bound to hit something eventually.

If anything, you can argue that his ult needs to be easier to see, or more prominent on the screen.

2 things you purposefully skewed a few numbers and how they are presented, if I follow your format correctly ekko is 1190 + 5.0ap, you also listed every other champs entire combo dmg, but chose to leave off ekko passive and pretended that the homing slowing q was easy to avoid the return half of the dmg ( I think you also left off ekkos ult?). Hey guess what it is easy to avoid swains W lets not count it in his dmg! Hey lets only include 3 of his 4 abilties because i want to trick you into thinking ekkos dmg is not insane, and i like free wins and pretending i am too guud for you.

NExt you toss around the words "at a safer range" alot without actually qualifying everything else that makes up safety. So yes vieger range is more safe but is he a safer champ?

Sire Hippington2 votes

dunno who complains about the damage of his base rotation, it's pretty standart for ap-assasin, rather a tad on the low side, The problem is the massive potential of ult+W, that aoe burst is insane, and a 2.25 sec aoe stun on that aoe is actually stronger than a amumu ult if it lands. Another huge problem is the massive damage. I'm not talking about the damage, that is perfectly fine, but 80%ms steal for 3sec is insane, thats 266% more than what the ruined king aktive does, and you can reaply it 4 sec later, so only 1 sec downtime(the speedbuff can have 100% up time vs multiple targets) If Ekko is in a position to solo you and gets in E range, he will take you as there is no way to escape him, and if he uses his passive right, he will be harder to pin down than a eve on steroids running around with 500+ms all fight long.

Most ekkos are free food, but those who actually know what they do(and don't rush ludens+lichbane but actually get some cdr, with full cdr he has 4.2 sec on Q+E(+passive)) and take a zhonyas for teamfights. He's more like fizz, sheen->morello->lichbane and your damage fits as you can juke incredible well and stay in range for a second rotation with eas, after that you can get zhonyas so you can survive long enough in a fight to actually use W and ult offensivly. A good ekko is just madness cause he combines fizz dueling with massive utillity and a potantial 1 man wombo(ult+w+Q will proc passive on all enemies cought for a total of ~1000 +2.8ap damge and 2.25 sec stun, followed by 80%slow for some sec) It's a best case scenario, but you can't totally ignore best case scenarios in terms of balance.

p.s., some off your math is a bit off.

  • ekkos base value is ~680(don't ignore the passive!!), not 450, and since his E is an empowered AA it should incoud his 110 base-ad, so 790 total...and the W passive isn't inclouded here aswell

  • Annie has 470 base without ult, not 515

  • Ahrie for example has a 1.84 ratio, not a 2.84 without ult,

  • you should mentaion that 620 +1.8 is without hitting xeraths W in the center, else it would be 710+2.1ap

  • lux is a bit more tricky, you ignored the base value of her passive(162 at lvl 18), and you can theoretically land 2 more passive procs on her combo for even more damage

  • it's a bit strange that you includ Es 20% amp on swains E it'self, but not the rest of his combo(you usually use E first, or atleast befor Q+R as they have same range

  • no passive for Vel? and you also ignored that his W has a ammo system and can be cast twice

something to notice is that it's much easier for (a good) ekko to apply his full combo than with most of those, and you also disregard AAs, which especially in the early would swing to Ekkos favor.

Played against Ekko as Karthus today... We were pretty much even. Every time he'd kill me I killed him in return and vice versa. I probably would have smashed him to pieces if it hadn't been my first time playing Karthus in lane. Lawls.

The safety of his ult is really the only problem... Give it a mana cost to punish him for bad resource management and I don't think I'd have much of a problem with him~

XeroKimo2 votes

Rioter confirmed that they are planning to add a 100 mana cost in 5.12, next patch is in 2 days which is 5.11, they originally planned it for 5.11 but things came up

Hard4Hamsters2 votes

Okay I have to point this part out.

Somebody has already stated that you have not added Ekko's Ult into account for his damage, but it is a HUGE payoff if you land it. 1.3 ratio plus 500 damage AOE is nothing to scoff at.

That's not the point I'm going to make though. Give Ekko item 3100 and item 3285. He is one of the few champions who can use these items in conjunction VERY effectively. If you do the math, which you like to do, you'll find that he gets about 900 BURST damage from these two items alone (their AP into his scaling + the damage on their passives counted once each; I didn't count his execute damage on his passive W to targets below 30%) in his full rotation, including the damage on his Ultimate, which may be difficult to land, but it is very powerful. It nearly DOUBLES his damage output (if he had no AP from Runes, masteries, or starting items). Together they cost 6100 gold to build.

Now give any champion 6100 gold to build items that can give them more damage. You will have a hard time finding a champion who gains 900 BURST damage from two items. I've been looking at the contenders and the only champion that I've found that gets more potential burst from two items is Diana and it makes a lot of sense. She is similar to Ekko and makes use out of Luden's and Lichbane as well. With these two items, she actually beats out Ekko by around 60 bonus damage (I count her Ult twice in my calculations). She has very similar base damages too across all abilities. There is a huge difference between the two though. Ekko has way more in terms of options when compared to Diana. Diana is an ALL IN type assassin; she has low CC, but good sticking power, and she is relatively durable with her shield. Compare that to Ekko. He has 2 heavy slows in his Q and Passive and also has a conditional Slow/Stun in his W that lasts for over 2 seconds, he gains MS with his passive and he has a dash and blink combo. To top it off he has a BIGGER and Better shield (though his doesn't deal damage) both in terms of base and scaling and an escape/teleport/AOE nuke/Heal ultimate. Oh and did I mention the AP scaling % missing health execute damage on his AA's?

And to be honest. I'm fine with him having all of these tools over many AP assassins/mages. However, he has ridiculous scaling across all of his abilities that are matched by very few champions. You can say that his abilities are easy to dodge, but he has SOOO many things he can do with his kit that having that kind of POTENTIAL damage is overwhelming.

Another thing to the OP. Swain is not a good example in this situation. 3 of his abilties are DOT abilities (counting his Ult; I know it's more like single hits of damage each second) and E is the only one that is guaranteed to hit for the full duration. He has very limited burst which is what we are talking about in Ekko. You used Velkoz as an example in comparing Ults, but this again is DOT versus Burst. 900 damage over 2.5 seconds versus 500 damage instantly... on a lower cooldown, and it doesn't root you in place, and it heals you.

I will reiterate the original point. Ekko already has a ridiculous amount of utility. He doesn't need as much damage as he can output.

That's my piece on the matter. He's going to have balance issues for a few patches for sure. I'm guessing by 5.14 he will be extremely weak and he will need to receive buffs to help him back into the game. He might reach a healthy zone by 5.16. These are just predictions, but that's the way I see it. Peace.

i have purposely been playing in the blind queues these last couple of days just so i can try and play VS Ekko.. (always banned in draft).. and i found Cass, and Malz work great vs him.. Cass especially.. when he comes to last hit u hit him with Q.. he is then forced to farm and last hit with his Q.. which we all know makes him VERY mana hungry... If he tries to engage you poison will blow through his shield... and 9/10 times he uses his ulti to run away if he misses his stun AOE field and the fight turns bad.. and with malz.. push the lane under tower and force him to compete with his own tower.. all the whileyou giving minions aids that spread to him...

It is one-sided to count Lichbane's effect but not Rabadon for other AP. Every one should have their Ap ratio up 30%.

With that in mind, Echo's combo is way way lower than other mid, unless he hits with ult.

Ekko still has a lot of sustain and mobility, along with being one of the only mid laners that may get one mana item and proceed to build full burst unlike immobile mages.

I've posted a bunch of comments criticizing ekko. Why tho? Ekko is an assassin - assassins are supposed to do a bunch of damage and be mobile . Basically assassins are mages that have mobility instead of CC. But ekko has all three. He has damage mobility and CC . This goes against what a assassin is supposed to be.
AkaliAkali - Has a slow but its used for invisibility not for the slow most of the time Evelynn Evelynn - a slow but its on her ult FizzFizz - A slow but its on his ult KassadinKassadin - a slow but needs six charges from enemy spell casts KatarinaKatarina -none Kha'Zix-Khazix a slow LeBlancLeblanc - a snare but she has to stay in range - used to proc Sigil of Malice most of the time Master Yi - MasterYi none Nidalee Nidalee - none Nocturne Nocturne - a fear but has to stay in range and has least damage potential of all assassins Rengar Rengar -A snare but has to have five charges on passive and gives up empowered q and w Shaco Shaco - A fear but boxes are immediately visible and a pink complete destroys his potential to put it anywhere effective Talon - Talon A severe slow but very short Zed - Zed a slow but only on his shadow

Ekko-Ekko a passive slow . A slow on q .A slow and possibly stun that gives a sheild on w (Ekko can detonate the sphere while dead and while in Stasis .)so even if he is dead he can stun enemy champs for 2.25 seconds. Ekko has too much cc to have such high ap ratios and mobility Ekko doesnt give up cc for mobility to be an assassin he just has everything.
