WoW has managed to surpass LoL in twitch viewers today.

Anatera··3 votes·1,512 views

At time of writing, WoW has 104k viewers and League has 103k viewers.

Still don't think there's a problem?

And no, there isn't a tournament going on. And no, this isn't because of the new expansion, since only one streamer is listed as doing anything new content related.

When people here are making comments getting hyped about the WoW update, I think it's pretty safe to say that WoW's viewer numbers will be higher than normal.

But that's normal. That kind of thing has been happening for years. PUBG, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Destiny, the list goes on and on. It's not note worthy unless a title continues to keep a higher viewer count than League - such as Fortnight.

Yes, this game needs fixes. But the hype of WoW's update isn't an indicator of how bad League has gotten, it's just an indicator of how hyped WoW is right now.

Casuals. Bright colors, shooting stuff, funny dances. Fortnite is casual heaven compared to games like League or WoW that take a bit of knowledge to get into.

I can watch someone play CoD and hav a good idea of what's happening.

I can watch someone surf a missle on Fortnite and find it neat.

I hav an idea of what's going on in DotA because I hav the moba experience

WoW is alien to me and the higher the level of play goes the less I'm interested in learning.

WoW is hella causal, but it's not a spectators sport along the lines of a FPS or a Battle Royale where you can just click a stream and enjoy with almost no game knowledge

Yeah, and getting hyped about WoW over League isn't an issue either I suppose. Even though it historically has only occurred when the expansion has actually launched. WoW is almost 14 years old right now. I think it's fair to say the original peak of its hype and popularity of it went down a long time ago.

People have been posting pictures of a tree burning and mentioning lore. I guess whatever promo Blizzard is running has captured more attention than anything they did for previous expansions.

Twitch viewership only represents one portion of the game's population. There are many players such as myself who don't go anywhere near twitch.

I'm ready to listen to someone saying that the game has problems, but you're going to have to come up with more compelling arguments than, "I told you so."

How ironic then that the devs are making every effort to pander to esports and the people who watch those streams.

That is incorrect. I asked because you made a threat [thread] which seems to have some sort of point to it. I'm giving you an opportunity to prove that point.

So far you're only proving how sassy you can be, which isn't productive.

If you are making a point/ thread with an opinion and someone wishes for you to divulge deeper into your reasoning you can not expect them to try and research and reason it out themselves. The way you are interacting with people on the boards who wish to have a discussion by deflecting every point you do not wish to talk about because it might disagree with yours is immature dude, hes just asking you to clarify. Dude, the highest WoW streamer is currently Sodapoppin at 47,000 viewers. Soda is known to have a very large amount of viewers on average. And then second is Asmongold, with 23,000.

The highest League streamer is imaqtpie at 13,000, which is what he's normally always at.

The only reason it's higher is because multiple big name streamers are playing it right now.

Gosh and I wonder what happened to all of League's big name streamers. I guess they're all taking breaks at the exact same time. But you're right. Nevermind the fact that WoW hasn't surpassed league once in at least the last 2 years or something. Just forget about that.

MetaVolca3 votes

Did you also forget that most of these streamers are preparing for the humongous expansion releasing next Tuesday? It's practically a brand new game they're getting, so of course it's gonna have big numbers for the hype.

And QTpie is practically League's biggest streamer, second to Tyler1. The only other time someone is higher is it's it's someone like Faker or Doublelift, who stream rarely.

Yeah, it is. Like I said, it historically only ever happens when the expansion actually launches. Which, you know, is two weeks away?

WoW's usual viewership on Twitch has always been what we can only describe as "subpar" (WoW always lingers around the end of the second row or the third row on the Twitch's game list). The only difference between the usual and now is the upcoming launch of the expansion. So it doesn't take brains to figure that it must be the reason behind the current resurgence of the viewing interest for the game.

You say "historically only ever happens when the expansion actually launches", well, maybe this time it's different. I don't know. But I mean, think about it, why would the viewership suddenly increase if there is nothing going on in WoW? Maybe people are just very excited for this particular expansion and they want to "get back into shape" and watching others play WoW now in anticipation? Fuck do I know. But to claim the viewership just increases now for no reason is baffling.

HalcyonDweller3 votes

Shhhh. You're making it harder for them to cling to their "I told you so" feeling of superiority.

If it's different, that indicates Blizzard is doing something RIGHT. Or is at least trying

As opposed to Riot who isn't. Who might as well not be trying.

And I know there's nothing going on right now because, (like I said in the first post) there's no tournament and only one streamer within the top 5 is explicitly doing something remotely new content related, at the time I wrote it. I don't even know why I'm repeating this when it's literally the first thing I wrote.

The situation now goes as follows:

  • WoW has a big expansion coming up that apparently everyone is excited for and the viewership of the game climbs much higher than usual even before the expansion is actually launched, which is unusual for WoW's typical viewing interest.
  • LoL has no big patch or expansion whatever coming up atm.
  • WoW with this hype, its current viewer base is about the same and often dips below LoL's current viewer base on Twitch.

I really don't see the whatever you're implying.

EDIT: Does Riot make a ton of mistake and whatnot? Yeah, the game has a shit ton of issues. But I don't think WoW is actually overtaking LoL any time soon unlike in the speculation of the OP, because the stats doesn't suggest that trend as far as I can see.

Then, what's the point?

Because otherwise this thread comes down to you seemingly just asking for Riot to drop a big patch or something to compete with WoW right now. Or this thread is just like a kinda "pessimistic" PSA about WoW's viewership increase in anticipation of the new expansion.

I don't get it.

Well, I kinda do, that you want Riot to fix the game. We all do. But it doesn't have anything to do with WoW, does it?

Anatera1 votes

Clearly.

The point is, [redacted]

It's funny because they're reaching so hard by trying to make the wow viewership sound like it means something. I gave them an opportunity to make additional supportive statements and they shied away from the opportunity. They have nothing else to go on except for their determination and "grit."

Edit: That was rude of me. I overreacted because OP was rude, sassy, AND unreasonable throughout the thread. The point is, in less rude terms, the OP has no actual basis for the claim they made, they're just trying too hard to make something irrelevant seem like evidence so they can use it to bash Riot and feel superior. They're reaching, metaphorically speaking.

That just means that Blizzard did something right with their marketing to build hype. They probably learned from how the gaming industry has been using hype to build interest and success this past year. It still has nothing to do with league.
