I really do have to ask at this point...

But why are we gold starving supports so much?

Every other class, lane, you name it, has more gold than the support will, unless for whatever reason the support gets fed. The support is balanced around having less gold than other classes, and this is problematic because whenever a non level scaling modifier is added to the active, some laner or jungler will use it far better than the support does (Ivern is a notable example here, since he purchases support items from the jungle and becomes a walking ball of utility.)

I'm just some lowly unranked, but is there any real reason why we keep support's gold so low?

EDIT: I don't mean it to be "change the support's gold income", I just want to know why exactly, and I have gotten a few similar answers.

Supports are inherently going to generate less gold than all the other roles because they don't farm and they (usually) don't generate gold from kills. Some items do provide you with gold generation and you also get assist gold but generally, you're going to be limited by your overall kill participation. Furthermore, support items are among the cheapest items in the game because Riot understands that supports don't farm. If supports were to farm, they would be splitting gold with their ADC and slowing down their power spikes, which is a big no no.

Because there are only 3 lanes and a jungle. If we want the carrys to become strong we cant have the support getting the gold

If gold gen items become too powerful then they start being built on none supports. If we change assist gold then the entire in game meta is massively warped. ETC

From my understanding if we do anything to give supports more gold, chance are that those ways of getting gold will be abused by none support roles/champions. To compensate for their lack of gold, most supports get tons of power in their kit in forms of utility and CC.

For the most part, support items are cheaper as well. And as NinjaGuy said earlier, supports will inherently generate less gold just due to class restrictions.

Different roles are balanced differently for a reason. It was already a huge mistake to let junglers get the same gold/xp as solo laners, because now they control the entire lane phase. Letting supports get the same gold income would be a nightmare. You know what Zyra and Brand would start doing to games? They'd be the Lee Sin of bot lane.
