"You must own the champion in order to earn a mastery chest"

So apparently I was supposed to earn a mastery chest for Karthus , but not only did I not get a proper S rank (the mastery bonus was the same as an S despite showing an A, too), I also didn't have the opportunity to get a chest for it?

I'm not that mad since I know I wouldn't have gotten one anyways with how I've maxed out my chests, but do they seriously not even give you the real rank if you don't own the champion?

Edit: I just checked the champion tab and it didn't even register a ranking. I got the mastery points, but no ranking whatsoever. Why can't we get mastery ranks with F2P champs?

You didn't get the S rank because you didn't earn the rank, simple as that. Ownership of the champion has no effect on champion mastery in that way.

You didn't get the chest because you didn't own the champion.

It had the message right there. "You must own the champion in order to earn a mastery chest". To earn a mastery chest, you have to get an S rank, so why would it even give me the message if I didn't actually get an S rank?

You get that message whenever you finish a game with a champion you don't own, it helps players realise that they can't earn a mastery chest before they start grinding chests with champions they don't own. The mastery points are not just based on the grade you earned for that game, your team's performance also increases this number and being in a party further increases it. You earned that A, not an S.

All right. That's a little inconvenient for it to always show the message with champs you don't own, but all right.
