is a winrate truly an indicator of a champion being broken?

I just want to ask since many recently re-worked champs have high winrates, but aren't all that difficult to play against. Elise's winrate is at 60% percent but no one ever says that she is broken or OP.

Winrate is **an **indicator. It's not the be-all-end-all, but it's a tool which can be used.

Elise's current winrate is around 50% and it was 54% in the previous patch. Where do you get your information? And yes, she was OP before the nerf. She was kind of permabanned in ranked.

The graph shows that her win rate spiked into the 60s multiple times in ranked 5 v 5 matches

champion.gg has more usable stats, only taking into account plat+ games. Champion.gg says she's 50% in jungle.

I should correct myself, WAS at 60%, but that's still pretty high

Probably not complaining about Elise because they have bigger fish to fry wtih Skarner and Garen being really OP atm.

Plus Elise actually takes some skill to play, so people don't see her that often. It's when champs that are faceroll like Skarner and Garen become OP that people start to cry because they're subject to their OPness in pretty much every game they aren't banned.

winrate*pickrate is more accurate

Win rate isn't everything. A few champions such as TahmKench Bard and Zilean can be completely useless or utterly game changing. The problem is with all these champions they can hurt your team and benefit the enemy. Also, harder mechanics make it harder to perform well even if the champs stats are higher than average.

Win rate alone doesn't tell you a great deal.

Win rate by game length, win rate of players with 100+ game logged on the champ, and win rate times pick rate are all really handy tools.

Some champions that are terrible in Solo are fine in competitive Fives. Some champions that are terrible in competitive Fives are great in solo.

Basically, there's more to it than just win rate.

Win rate by itself is not accurate because it is skewed by pick rates and other factors such as itemisation balance which is mostly independent from champ balance.

That's why arguments stating whether a champ is balanced or not while quoting only the win rates are always going to be flawed.
