A moment of reflection: The Warwick rework was examplary

AstroFerrari ··157 votes·4,666 views

And might I add, one of the few reworks everyone didn't lose their shit over. They kept the beginner jungler element, while keeping his style as jungler. He feels really smooth to play and has very clear strengths and weaknesses. I can say (at least to me), this rework was absolutely perfect.

The two things keeping his rework from being perfect are the wonky Q interaction and the fact that you can literally pass overtop of an enemy champ with his ult and not have it "hit" the enemy champ. The hitbox for his ult is just way too narrow.

AstroFerrari 23 votes

Yeah the Q can feel a bit wonkey, but I appreciate that they at least tried to do something different with it. And on his ult, I guess people just didn't want targeted suppression. Can't blame them, but I do agree with you.

Grymmstrike10 votes

I love his Q, it is just very hard to utilize it correctly because of how it works. If it actually worked like every time I press it and hold it, it would be perfect. But it doesn't :( But I love the thought with it.

And don't take my complaints as a knock against the rework. I had about 125k mastery points on WW pre-rework, and another 125k mastery points post-rework, and I love the rework! Not that I didn't like WW pre-rework, he just feels like he offers a lot more now, especially early. Like I said, though, there are two issues I have with his abilities which would really fix him if they worked right.

It works all the time for me.

Same, tbh I think people just need to clean their keyboards or something.

Shyvana Wonky ult hitbox, you say?

Warwick True. But if you miss your ult, you still TURN INTO A FUCKING DRAGON! If I miss mine, I turn into a pinata.

Faustavian1 votes

Okay, Sometimes missing WW's ult is okay. It has a bad a** landing so even if you miss it, you'll look cool.

jorrgi1 votes

Actually his entire kit is garbage. Only reason he is not Urgoth tier because of his Q and E are insanely over-numbered to make this garbage kit function.

OtterlyLost8 votes

I was gonna say that the Q is honestly really clunky and his ult needs some cleaning up but someone beat me to it. So yeah. It'd be nice if they cleaned up the interactions with his Q/R. Its annoying trying to ult WW away as someone like Trist and then misjudging when I can and it actually work, you know? :/ Wish they'd clean it up so there was more clarity

Remember, don't feed CertainlyT's ego too much, that's his biggest problem and the reason he used to churn out awful overloaded champions.

Only Play Darius17 votes

We should be praising him when he gets it right. I hate Kalista more than anyone but I will still let CT know he nailed it with Warwick.

Ralanr5 votes

Funny thing is he hated Warwick's rework because he felt so restricted by it.

Only Play Darius2 votes

Some parts of it are restrictive and don't feel all that great. His ult cooldown is too high for how easy it is to miss entirely let alone land on a backline target, and having no healing until he drops to 50% HP feels bad. But overall he is still great.

Ralanr4 votes

No healing until 50% is freaking amazing dude and a great balance lever.

Yeah, and the fact that your ult can LITERALLY backfire and have you jump backward onto a champ the opposite direction of where you are trying to ult...

Fairyfleur12 votes

If anything, we should be letting him know when he designs something well. It'll provide a better example for later VGUs/Champions. If he doesn't receive good feedback on something he did well, why wouldn't he just go back to what he was doing before?

SpecterVonBaren6 votes

As much as I hate his stand alone champion designs, I will give it to CertainlyT, he hit it right out of the park with Warwick.

I consider the Taric rework to be equally magnificent. They've done stellar work on the VGU team, in my opinion. It's one of the best things about league to me. When a champ that I like gets reworked and comes out the other end even more awesome, that's just the best.

Stars Shaper3 votes

Agree, this Taric is perfectly in line with his fantasy.

He just needs some work on numbers in order not to feel like you are holding back your team because you are neither a mage/support nor a pure tank.

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

Yeah, I do agree that he's a little weak. I think a slight buff to his heal would help, but part of the problem is simply the current meta.

macromite3 votes

I kinda miss old taric from time to time, because though he is an examplery warden these days, much more than he was, old taric was more than just a warden, I would call him a warden/juggernaut hybrid, defensive and buffing magics on top of being a real albeit not major threat in the early/midgame solo.

While I personally did like to various degrees all of the major reworks, I do admt that warwick exceded in 3 aspects more so than the others:

1.-They actually updated his art rather than just build something entirely different. While reworks like Sion, Galio and Yorick are cool looking, they did not take enough from the previous models to look familiar. Yes, of course you should change them, but not to the extent that they are unrecognizable. Poppy and Warwik are both good examples of what to do right in this department.

2.-The gameplay is fun while keeping warwick's gameplay theme familiar. It is expected that with updates a champions kit will change, but keeping it thematic to the character while also conserving what worked on the previous one is when a gameplay update succeds. Gangplank and Warwick are great examples of what to do right. Yorick and Galio are ok given how unplayable their older kits were, but maybe could have had improvements. Fiora and Sion are examples of how to create basically a new champion that is only losely related to an older one

3.-Warwicks gameplay is what people imagined they were doing while playing old warwick, only now its true. The way the visual thematics tie in to gameplay was really good

deoje2994 votes

Am I the only one who liked the old warwick better?

YambrinZ2 votes

Nope. I prefer simple point and click champions because im bad at the game. Ill stick around playing LoL until they turn Annie into a skillshot bot like everything else lol.

Azteryz4 votes

Sion : top notch Warwick :Top notch Galio :stone solid minus the 1% of community that galio mains who didnt like it Yorick : more like a sigh of relief due to how long people have been waiting but pretty good (especially now) Ryze x 11: obvious statement Taric fabulous Poppy : fuck you im always conflicted on this champ at all metas Gangplank : conflicted at first but a pretty good now

MrGerund3 votes

he feels liek a weird meme, stereotype: the one warwick who fdives under tower and isntantly dies.

and yup, his kit didn't change, it only got updated to standards (skillshots, gapcloser, % hp and dmg reduction, because riot)

i do have to say, its cool to ult right into a bloodtril's end, then people are like wut tho, and you can "see" stealthed untis with it

SociopathFriend10 votes

I mean, his kit most definitely did change with at least the AoE fear and damage reduction.

Vallalan2 votes

Exactly. He lost his instant attack speed steroid (that was actually massive) in exchange for early cc and surviveabilty.

The insane damage reduction is interesting. By itself it's straight up broken. It's Ali ult on a shorter cooldown basically that fears. But because Warwick is so prone to being kited it helps bring the entire kit together

Zero Skill Tank2 votes

It's good but it's far from perfect. Warwick's presence really discourages lane interaction all around the map, because any trade that would bring you down to 50% stops being "worth it" even if your enemy goes to 25%. Also Q and R are both really clunky, from WW players perspective.

Bumby pie2 votes

i wish his ult still did 5 hits instead of 3. pretty big nerf to on-hit warwick. not to mention his insanely slow auto animation which is on par with nautilus'... they took away variety with this rework. i only ever see titanic hydra and or triforce into tank now....... but at least hes still a wolf.

Hurstan2 votes

I never played Warwick pre-rework but decided to pick him up after the rework because his kit looked fun. Currently holding a steady 60% winrate in ranked with him. The biggest thing that I think needs work is his ult hitbox. Sometimes I should have missed the ult but end up hitting the target anyways and other times I should have hit them but apparently I was 1 pixel off. The update for the VO was amazing though. Fluffy tail 10/10.

Recuro2 votes

In my opinion the Warwick rework has been the best one by far because they managed to keep pretty much everything about old ww while making him feel more modern.

Also i personally think Galio has been the worst rework by far simply because it felt like the designers didn't care at all about the old one and just launched a new champ as an excuse to get rid of the old one.

Voluug132 votes

Galio at least has some of the same things he did pre-rework and has more or less the same role.

Karma on the other hand... jinkies.

Altonius Amakiir2 votes

The Warwick rework did disappoint me slightly on one front. The voice lines are more focused on what singed did to him and about Zaun, instead of him hunting down people. The old voice lines, I feel, helped with the immersion more that you were beast hunting down people, and I miss them.

Robrono2 votes

Personal opinion, I really miss old Warwick's on hit build, just running over and ulting ADC's. I miss it, so damn much.

junglerboy162 votes

On top of keeping his beginner friendly nature, they didn't totally screw it up like Garen's in that they managed to keep a low skill floor while dramatically increasing his skill cap. I hadn't played Warwick regularly in years before the rework came out, but now I feel like actually putting in time on him I can make the kind of advancement in technique that other much more complicated champs have. It's not just skill shots either, it's decision making, strategy, build style, and a lot more macro play in team fights, on top of all the little bits of finesse in how you use your QWER.

Still think Sion's is the best overall, mainly because of WW's janky ult hit box (I swear the collision detection is broken on that thing, you shouldn't be able to miss point blank into 5 champs)

Smitty Manjensen2 votes

I have a feeling people will think very differently if he ever gets popular. People called Jhin a perfect designed champion until he got popular, suddenly everyone hates him and wants him nerfed, I am 100% sure the same will happen with WW.

Laxfan521 votes

Im not gonna say he is balanced but his rework was well designed

Mecha Incognito1 votes

Well how Jhin's kit works is fine, but his numbers (especially on his ult) were WAY too high for what it does.

Sir Fuzzi2 votes

I have insane issues with his Q, which is probably on my end. But I dunno.

I think Sion is as close to 'nailed it' as they get with his rework. Every argument against it I've seen is basically, 'But I enjoyed winning with AP Sion without having to think.'

Rito Staff2 votes

Weird that you say he's smooth to play when his Q is clunky af. Mainly because the old one had range and this one doesn't (it's AA range) so for everyone who knew him before his Q feels weird.

Plus the W sometimes feels clunky aswell, even though it's passive. And my friend was perma banning the drain-tank also normal tank who has damage reduction because he was "so op" but that was when he first came out :p

Q has 350 range... that's about the same...

Fawksea1 votes

i dislike it for one thing, they made him into the biggest examples of "drain tank" i've ever seen, his lifesteal without any actual damage items is one of the stupidest thing's i've seen, and yet they gut swain and vlad for being even close to becoming drain tanks

Baron of Bread1 votes

WW's healing isn't tied to his damage which is why isn't busted like how Swain and Vlad can become. WW can still heal even if he can barely scratch someone, but doesn't heal more if he can rip their face off. That was the problem Riot had with Swain and Vlad, that the stronger they are in a game the harder it is for them to be shutdown and the weaker they are the harder it is for them to be useful.

Drain tanking being attached to damage makes champs very difficult to balance because hitting the sweet spot between them taking over and sucking completely is hard to hit and keep them in.

CyberBalt1 votes

Riot's been doing a pretty good job with reworks recently. Yorick, Warwick, Galio reworks were all great. Meanwhile, their new champions give us shit like Camille and Ivern ...

I really wish Riot would just stop making new champions and double down on updating the old ones.

Partholonian2 votes

I think that's unfair, new champions also give us Rakan and Xayah. Even though I don't personally play Aurelion Sol and am terrible at Taliyah I think they're both still cool ideas. And just because Camille and Ivern aren't your cup of tea doesn't mean there aren't other people who like them, not every champ can be for everyone.

It's good to see people acknowledge some of the good reworks, though. I agree with Yorick, Warwick and Galio and add Poppy.

Now that that's settled, let's get back to complaining about random shit.

I find it funny how the rework actually made lane WW more viable in certain match-ups and not outright shit in bad match-ups. :^|
