A actual look at what can be done to make Treeline draw in more players

CaptainAntiHeroz··37 votes·11,059 views

"However, Treeline has always suffered from low queue sizes, even in times when we added new items, map-specific champion balance, and even the Twisted Treeline redesign waaayy back in 2012. At present, it falls short of even the numbers we saw at the end of Nexus Blitz’s second run. This small population leads to long queue times, poor matchmaking, and ultimately an unsatisfying PvP experience for many of the players who do queue up for Treeline."

WOW 2012 WE'RE SO PROUD OF YOU, literally taking more time looking back for when you last updated the gamemode than fixing the botting issues, updating the map, adding things like a river for champs like Qiyana and dragons for champs like Shyvana and maybe 2 buff camps on opposite sides of the map so Ivern would be playable and contesting smaller but useful objectives would be viable. I WONDER WHY IT COULD POSSIBLY BE UNSATISFYING How could we possibly fix it? We're a small indie company

Well here LEMME SPITBALL HERE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO

1- Larger jungle so team play can get a better focus more champions can be viable and people like Kayn and Talon don't just get to control the whole map because walls mean nothing 2- Add 1 red and 1 blue buff on opposite sides of the map equal distance away from both spawns that spawn a little later than the early camps around the same time the alters unlock so objective plays aren't pointless. and make them slightly stronger than summoners rift so there is an incentive to go for them and lose an alter 3- Add a River and a dragon pit. Put the dragon pit on the opposite side of the map 4- Increase the base movement speed of minions and champs, or make TT boots give more movement speed to accommodate for a larger jungle forcing longer lanes 5-WORK ON WEEDING OUT BOTS 6-Add more items that interact with alters so there is more incentive to get those as well rather then "I got it once so i have my hunter stack and I dont have mana problems so who cares if we keep it" 7- Add Unique mini objectives like scuttle and the old green smite so junglers can have wards for a larger jungle and coordinated teams will be able to make plays

Then on your grand launch make a cinematic with idk Swain talking to Elise about her sacrifices to vilemaw before the camera pans through the treeline for a close up of an UPDATED Vilemaw BOOM WHAT UP ez clap hype achieved And all that was in about 10 minutes of brainstorming. Come tf on Rito

part of the appeal that it was UNPOPULAR this is what riot doesn't understand we play tt to get away from all the meta whiners but they only care about numbers

Oh so you want it gone? I know I don't, but "its too unpopular" so if they do tweaks to make it less bot infested and more fun and not They have Kayn i feel very uncomfortable now, or Shyvana I have a useless passive It needs to be updated not scraped

He/she/it is saying he/she/it doesn't want it gone. He/she/it want's to have an unpopular mode in the game people don't care so much about so that they can play in that environment.

I think even with this it's not like it's gonna be a mass exodus to twisted treeline, it will just make it popular enough to keep around and make it more approachable for a wider variety of comps Either way it's worth a shot

When you leave a gamemode without updates since god damned 2012 yeah it will be unpopular. Even if Rift wasn't updated since back then, it would have been removed.

got it let's make TT into SR.

Carrying over traits of the core game and expanding upon them in a new environment would be a nice way to revitalize treeline in my opinion as long as they keep the core principles the same

Prozzak2 votes

The small map size is pretty core to the game mode, not sure how they could keep that and add everything in that the guy wants.

Make the map slightly larger while changing boots base speed to make it still feel easy to get from point a to point B

The last big update for TT was in season 5. They were using the 2012 update as an example. Here is the point they were trying to make before you decided you wanted to twist it so you could rage out. Any time they put effort in to TT it has zero results. When they did a huge update in 2012 it had no results. When they did an update in season 5 it had no results. Whenever they did an update any time it had no results. They done sweeps of basic things to items to champions and still nobody plays TT. Not then, not now, not ever. People don't like playing it. It is and always was a dead mode. There's going to be minor pushback for a month then almost nobody will care anymore, just like dominion.

Yes, people will always complain when something they no longer have. Remember how the boards were flooded with posts from Yorick mains prior to his rework despite being the least used champion in the game?

This is going to be a bitter truth to you and to everyone on the boards complaining about it now, but TT is not popular and never will be no matter how much work they put on it. When they tried, the mode remained as unpopular as ever. The only way they would really get people to play it is to offer incentives, which they did (Golden Chroma for Victorious skin). And even with that, if it's pulling in the numbers Riot is saying, it doesn't pay to even utilize it any more. It still works on their server.

Lol not like they tried that hard. MEANWHILE Ryze on rework 90000?

I find it important to point out that Riot also disincentivized playing TT. It took over a year for TT and ARAM to get Champion Mastery. Not only did RGM modes get the Mastery system earlier, they also had Mastery tokens for a while as well. In contrast, TT players have never had access to Mastery token drops. Furthermore, Event Passes have been awarding event tokens for all games (including TFT) except for Treeline matches. Plus a (frequent) lack of Mission eligibility for Treeline. For instance, the Missions commemorating the start of Ranked Season 2019 explicitly required "5v5 games." In other words, Riot deemed that playing ARAM to celebrate the start of this ranked Season was more fitting than playing Ranked Treeline.

I mean, dominion had its charm. Twisted...not so much. I think of Twisted as SR midlane split and bent with jungle camps in the middle. TT will likely get retired, but im not marking a # v # map out of the equation to replace it. Something of some similar capacity will have to replace it. Its honestly better for them to retire the current map, go to the drawing board, plan it out, and release a new map with better balance design. TT is too fossil in age to be revivable without having to dump more hours into fixing it compared to making a new map IMO. Besides, releasing it like they did with TFT allows the mode to be in the spotlight so a new community forms (of a larger amount), instead of trying to resuscitate a small niche community (sorry TT players).

Eedat1 votes

I used to love doing scumbag back-capping Shaco on Dominion. Was a lot of fun. Oh well. Dont blame them for removing dominion

Lovelle4 votes

Oh there were results, a lot of players were angry with the changes and started a petition to bring back the old map and/or have it reverted. Riot not only didn't listen, but proceeded to basically ignore the mode for years after that. No one even asked for them to change the entire map, but to change the base layout and the random jungle camps. They made the map objectively worse to play after the 2012 update, then basically proceeded to let it rot.

I think the only fix it needed was trying to balance teams. Have some sort of system that says 2 Bronze 1 and 1 Silver 2 isn't a fair match up against 2 Plat 2 and 1 Diamond 4. And yes, I'm talking about their 3v3 flex rank. It seems obvious and like it shouldnt be a big thing to make the game mode competitive, but I guess not.

Eedat4 votes

It does that because pretty much nobody plays TT. People especially aren't going to wait in an hour queue to play TT.

That's not really true. The game que times wasn't THAT long, and they couldve tried to balance the 6 people that were in the game instead of picking the literal worst teams for that game. A 5 min que for equal teams is more fun than a 3 min que for games like that.

Kürama2 votes

~1 minute = 1 hour now.

Have you even queued up for TT by chance?

Eedat3 votes

The queue time is low because they butcher together matches. I tried ranked TT a few times and the enemy team had a person ranked silver in TT and a person ranked plat in TT lol

Kürama1 votes

You think that doesn't happen in SR? LMAO. Get real matchmaking is shit in every mode.

Lovelle4 votes

More consistent updates would be a start, along with some map-specific balancing, neither of which they've done in years.

Helmight3 votes

The biggest thing that has to happen for TT to ever be a real, "fixed" game mode is for it to have its own, dedicated balance team - or for the balance team to actually spend time testing and implementing balance changes for TT specifically, alongside their balance work on ARAM, SR, and TFT. Without that, TT will never take off.

Darkdemon6531 votes

I don't think there is a way without making it not League. To me, and I suspect many others but I obviously can't speak for anyone else, TT is just League but less. There's no difference between SR and TT except TT has a missing lane and half a jungle.

Flawless Fetus1 votes

They just need to revert to the old map, but keep the current aesthetics. Boom. Ezpz

qiyana doesn't actually need a river in twisted treeline, she has so much more access to walls and brush lol, literally can't miss ulti. what are ya'll doing to be so uncreative with her kit? add dragon and map dynamic changes. ivern is likely what he is there. there are picks for talon.

you cant just fairly say that a champ cant get part of their kits on a map I mean its not hard to play her in treeline and aram but all champs need to have all their abilities available in all games

I'm a Talon ONE TRICK (800k). idk what his issue is, talon sucks in the game mode because of the high density of tanks. Yes, a good Talon player can abuse the small map size but that doesnt mean Talon doesnt fall off extremely fast. i have to take runes i wouldnt take on SR to deal with the CC in every game, i have to ADAPT. i cant speak for Kayn but Talon isn't good in TT (ofc i still play him cuz i love him <3... JUST LIKE TT PLEASE RIOT NOOOOOOOOO)

Hi im 121 votes

how to make TT gain players: remove funnel thing is riot doesn't really want TT to gain players though, they'd rather have other game modes get those players.

Void Kaiju1 votes

your post is kinda saying they should be updating the map as new champions come out if they don't fit in TT which is like... a huge amount of work for a gamemode that barely pulls in 1% of the population in most regions. What you suggest takes a boatload of work from art and animation teams and requires a complete overhaul of the map. That's completely not a justifiable amount of effort to put in, unfortunately.

FakeGravity1 votes

at this point it is more likely they bring back nexus blitz from time to time that they ever consider reviving twisted treeline, the fact they even put an announcement means they are already set on their minds to pull the plug, at least i have hopes for aram which is much more played
