Bring back the uniqueness that old runes provided

Like right now all we have is masteries, and for ya'll noobies who don't know what I mean lemme show you what runes really are:

http://i66.tinypic.com/nv7byv.png THOSE ARE RUNES THOSE ARE GLORIOUS AND DIVERSE THOSE ARE TRULY WONDERFUL FORMS OF HOW YOU WANT TO PLAY YOUR CHAMP

I'm not saying runes reforged was a bust (which some people would) but 'runes' we're just removed https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vb2jp6oLHj0/WFiDaiwPhGI/AAAAAAAAQtc/ZEvoZfkLpMkCWlssEkvu8OcBm1dI3KCjgCLcB/s1600/tryndameremasteries.png The things we got now are just over glorified masteries with 3 "runes" Crappy lack of fun diverse options, just bring them back and make them either 100% free or make the base form of them free so we have something to spend this BE on DO SOMETHING POSITIVE RIOT

(To clarify, bring back the old runes along side the current masteries) (To all the people saying old runes weren't diverse heres a little friend https://leagueoflegends.fandom.com/wiki/Runes_(Historical) ) (Edit three, because people still are mad, if runes were to come back WE ALL CAN AGREE THEY BETTER BE FREE) (Edit four, for those who never saw the old system http://mullinator.com/tools/runepage/ is a runepage calculator for the old system allowing you to make custom OLD runepages)

I liked runes and masteries together. I'd rather say, bring back runes next to the current masteries.

thats what im saying we have masteries now, but 3 rune slots basically we should have both and it shoulda just been "Masteries reforged"

its not like the old rune system was actually diverse. most people ran the same rune page on the same types of champions.

there were a lot of different runes, of which most of them were practically never used.

yellow runes were basically flat armor for everyone, red runes were either flat armor pen or ad, blues were either mr, cdr, or ap.

the only thing that was slightly variable was quints.

the stat shards arent much different compared to that. we would just need more of them. like a 2% movement speed stat shard for example in the second row.

maybe making stat shards in general more flexible. for example allowing us to just chose health for all 3 slots.

That's their own fault for following build guides. It's hardly different for items or even Runes Reforged. This in general is what I don't like about League's direction since season 4. They look at the "problem" of most people not using a thing, and they fix it by taking away choice and forcing everyone into certain pre-defined directions.

With the old rune system I used all 20 pages I had and sometimes I had to switch them out for other ones. I used so many for different champions and different matchups on those champions. Today I use about 5? different pages. #Diversity

like why have more when every champ in role x with job x is probably taking the same rune page lmao XD

They should've just made Runes free and gave us the ability to change them during champion select. It felt more fun to have that much more control over your early game or late game back then.

Literally the only downside of old runes was that they cost IP for whatever reason.

idk man, all you guys missing that one percent crit, but here i am missing how i want to play against certain champions. normal mage mid lanes? ez, just go ap big 3, magic pen reds, HP till 18 yellows, then some mr and mr till 18 blues. Up against assassins? ap big 3, magic pen reds, hp till 18 and some armor yellows, and armor blues. Think I'm confident? Ap blues, Magic pen reds, hp till 18 yellows and ap blues. I remember having more setups than the current rune reforge system

Rákãñ8 votes

Technically they somewhat already somewhat did added old runes with the bonus stats on the bottom right corner. But it doesn't allow fun stuff where you can carry 1% with other bonus stats at start. Just the common meta setup.

yeah it should have more options

I do agree, But I guess someone out here disagrees with me since I got a down-vote apparently. [slayer-pantheon-popcorn] Guess some people can't handle facts that old runes was just bonus stats to begin the game with. Personally, I would like to see more scaling stats make more returns. All we got is that scaling cdr pick.

They were just bonus stats, yes, but we had masteries for what current runes provide. Those bonus stats allowed you to choose a play style that suited you, which provided more diverse opportunities. Did everyone take them? No. But they still existed. Just because no one played HP Regen Sion doesn't mean it didn't work.

I would like to nitpick one thing. The old masteries (before keystones, prior to s6) gave significantly....SIGNIFICANTLY weaker bonuses. The masteries at the end of the trees gave the strongest bonuses, generally speaking...and one of those was a weaker version of Coup de Grace. The point being that minor runes of the current system are stronger than the most powerful masteries of old were.

That's very true, I can't deny that. If they were to bring back the old runes, then give us masteries tuned somewhere in the middle between the old masteries and the new runes, that might be my dream result.

Actually I agree that one of the things I've felt the loss of the most is the old scaling stats. I used to run scaling stats on all sorts of champions, particularly if they were not strong early anyways. On the new system things that give scaling stats like Gathering Storm don't give you those stats by level, but instead at marks in the game. The old scaling stats worked better because you would catch up to where the flat stats were at a certain level (I think for AP it was around lvl 6 or 7 and etc). So, even though they have the potential to infinitely scale, the way they scale is a waiting game instead of scaling up smoothly throughout and causes a lot of issues with waiting on an arbitrary power spike caused by the runes.

That and being able to take combinations of flat and scaling. Used to do that all the time for CDR, particularly on champions that need extra clearing power or wave clear early, but otherwise still wanted more CDR than any other stat.

Oh well.

IMO, the reason old runes sucked was the giant barrier in form of what was then IP. I think they’re healthier for the game, although maybe not as fun and interactive, which is what Riot wants.

Maybe they should bring back old runes, but remove the cost attached to the old system. To keep their idea of current runes, maybe town down the power of Masteries (essentially what current runes are), and make them less impactful. Kind of a compromise between their ideas.

Maybe I’m just talking out my ass, what do I know....

StormBladeMaster6 votes

At least these runes were good on every champ. You could decide what was the best thing for your champ and adapt to your opponent. Also the runes were little buffs and wasn't that important. They didn't affected your playstyle like now (i mean you could have bad runes but still won because it's wasn't that oppresive).

Now, it's dmg, dmg and dmg and dmg. For example, top lane is one of the worst lane now because of counterpicking.

But why counterpicking is so hard in top lane ? Because new runes don't allow you to build vs your opponent and resist since they are all focused on dmg. You can't have more armor, you can't have more hp or more mana, more gold regen...

Some runes with some champs are a pure joke.

Champs rely too much on theses runes now. Runes are doing all the job.

Don't forget also turret plating. No wonder why top lane is "counterpick or death". You are punished since champ select if your jungler don't gank you.

Riot said these new runes would allow more playstyles... I wonder where is the variety of playstyle... It's "dmg" only. You want to tank ? Nah, better dealing dmg. You would like to have more gold ? Nah deal dmg.

Resolve and Precision are destroying the game. One is useless and is supposed to help people to get tanky but don't fill the role. The other is broken and is the reason of why tanks are useless and bruisers are OP.

Domination is also a problem.

Only Sorcery and Inspiration are good and balanced. The rest is dmg, scalling...

mind you if actual runes are brought back they better not be so dang expensive again. My account is I don't even know how many years old, and I only ever had like 3 runes because I wouldn't spend IP on them.

i want runes reforged with old runes also to edit stats freely where the reforged is our masteries.

I really want this back TO BE FUCKING HONEST i loved runes AND masteries together and they can just add some of the new ones to old ones or just swap some if they dont want to revert them fully.I would take it tbh, aftershock is just cancer and unhealthy to deal with and Armor and MR are really underwhelming now compared to before.

The old rune system wasn't that diverse, there was a cookie cutter build for every champion like there is today. the only difference is that the new system looks simpler.

thats your choice to play the same runes every game, and if they were brought back you could continue being boring and using the same "optimized to win 175% of the time no click bait" build, for the those of us who like having fun builds to play that arent absolutely dull and repetitive, I would really like to see them return

JarI BaIgruuf6 votes

I mean with that logic just use different runes now lol

Whisper875 votes

Totally agree. It's funny because a lot of people talked about the lack of champ diversity up until like a season ago. And while runes reforged did kind of encourage champ diversity, it did so in unhealthy ways. As in the sole reason a champ is viable is because of their ability to abuse a specific rune set up. Like POM Kassadin, or Aftershock tanks top. As soon as that specific combo got nerfed...no more Kassadin, no more tanks top. Because under the current set up, you are playing the runes as much as you are playing the champ. Which is a poor design. I would argue that the old rune set up was actually better for diversity cuz even if tanks too weren't super meta, you could do something like take a tank tops with a pure hp and armor rune set up and just neutralize your Riven/Irelia/Fiora lane. Now that option is largely gone because you don't have access to resources necessary to build highly situation-specific custom setups.

Yup to this day i don't get why they killed off runes when they could have just made them available to everyone, trimmed the truly useless ones and maybe add a new type of rune or two.

SilentBomber3 votes

Tbh i enjoyed the old masteries + runes more than the reforged ones.If Riot adds the old rune system they will have to tone down a bit almost all current masteries.

Otsutsuki Hamura3 votes

I miss playing Mundo with the old runes and using nothing but HP regen runes. Or Garen with the same runes. What was it 20-30 hp/5 at lvl 1. Then by 6 regen beads was fun. None can ever run you out of lane.

datfatguy3 votes

Honestly I’d rather go back to the old masteries as well and remove this abomination we know as keystones.

DuskDaUmbreon3 votes

Sure, a lot of potential options. But you're conveniently and deliberately ignoring that almost all of those options were garbage.

Even with just current runes, you have more actual choices, once we take out all of the garbage choices. I can run Conqueror, Spellbook, or Grasp on Nasus. With runes, the only difference I'd ever have is whether I went armor or MR runes. The only difference choice was which resistances I had, which was predetermined by who my opponent was.

Old runes only had the illusion of choice. There was no actual choice to them at all.

Heos003 votes

Man i remember a support in worlds 2015-2016 i think having literally crit chance on glyhps (i think, i don't know how to spell it) on Janna LMAO, literally getting crits when harassing the enemy laner with autos, and i also remember my friend playing draven (the best main draven with the best mechanical skill i have ever seen, since he otp) with full AD runes, no armor and no mr, just plain AD literally making a shitshow of every botlane.

Now runes reforged killed the different ways of play the game and some champions with them, since not every rune is for every champion, like draven, PTA doesn't fit him very well but it's the best among these sh*t "runes" avaible for him.

Wrencher3 votes

CaptainAntiHeroz is right, we need a change right now with runes and rethink the new masteries, create something bigger, its the most important thing in our game! i remember spending hours trying to figure a new runes/masteries set for a situation/champ. Its a big part of our game that u guys removed. Now i spend around 20 sec per match just clicking really quick on masteries and hope its going to be not so bad… what a bad feeling. New masteries is trully the most garbage update ever made we call it regression not Optimization of the game.

Cdore1 votes

I have a better idea. Remove the idea of masteries and runes altogether. Make sure every champ has the tools they need. And if they don't, make an option in game to spec or buy into them like Heroes of the Storm does. It's a lot more balanced and Riot can actually tailor their champions and game the way they want it to go. It's clear they won't let their players do outrageous builds or playstyles, so the end game is obviously to give us few choices that they deem balanced.

crippler383 votes

I think you mean DotA 2 then, HotS' system is built to replace items and make characters that are iconic to the franchises feel unique. The talent system forces characters into specific roles and niches which wouldn't work in a game with items.

DotA however has a talent system to help gate power behind levels and make people unique, but it still has the idea in mind that anything that you NEED to counter you can do with items. Some items may not be optimal to buy for your character but none of them have wasted stats.
