Bard's kit is a mess.

I've played several games as Bard now, and I've noticed a few things. His lane phase is pretty good - I'll give him that much. He can create some decent pressure with his Q, and he can set up ganks nicely with his E. Bard past lane phase, however, is a different story.

If you build him as a Mage-Support with AP, you have no defensive capabilities outside of small skirmishes. You can only peel off 2 enemies, and your ult is pretty ineffective as a whole if your team is tangled up in enemy players if you're trying to disengage. Your heal is a little nicer, and your Q and Meeps damage isn't totally worthless, but it's still very lacklustre compared to the likes of Sona, Lulu or Annie. The movement speed on W doesn't scale with AP either.

If you build him as a Utility-Tank with a lot of CDR, you become a lot more effective in teamfights and skirmishes, but then you no longer get any value from your W.

As a whole, his ultimate is extremely situational and bad considering its awfully long cooldown. It's bad as disengage, as I've stated, and it is bad for engaging as it isn't CC - you can land a 5-man ult on the enemy team and you're no better off than you were before you used the ultimate. In fact, your ult really only does 3 things. It buys time for cooldowns to come back up or allies to come to assist, it buys time for ultimates to channel, and it can be used to bait ultimates out of the enemy team.

What would I change?

I would change his W so that either (or both) the Heal from W scales off Bard's Maximum/Current/Bonus HP and the movement speed on W scales with Bard's AP.

I would also make his ultimate more instantaneous (its current missile speed is pretty pathetic) so that it can be used for clutch saves/engages and also allow for it to be self-cast so it can be cast at Bard's feet. This way he can E ---> Alt + R or E ---> Flash ---> Alt + R.

EDIT: As for his Meeps, they're an incentive to roam. But they don't spawn fluently. Upon picking up Meeps, you gain a movement speed charge that can stack up to 5 times. The issue is, they don't spawn in range of each other (especially in the early game) when you have no additional movement speed. And considering that Meeps upgrades in increments of 5, something needs to be done about this. I will rarely get any more than 2 movement speed charges before tier 1 boots, and I usually won't get above 3 or 4 before I get mobility boots.

I haven't played as Bard at all yet, but it seems to me that the ideal use of his ult is to divide and conquer - like Warcraft 3/DotA's Cyclone. You don't want to land a 5-man ult, you want to land a 3 man ult so your team can butcher the other two, then turn on the survivors once they come out of stasis.

Yeah, it's kinda like reverse CC (probably why I can't stand using his ult). Naturally you want to focus whoever you land ultimates on (#LC$BigPlays), but with Bard that's all inverted. Instead of looking for their back line (ADC, Mid & Support if they're a squishy support like Annie) you kinda have to look for their front line (their tanks & anyone that can peel your team off their carries).

If anything, though, if this is intended use, there needs to a) be a faster missile speed for the ability AND b) a sweet-spot mechanic so that you can prioritize their tanks & peel and have the champions in the middle stuck in stasis for several seconds, and the ones on the edge in stasis for less.

That is also true. however ive tried that but their will always be that one player who is already in the fray making the Plan somewhat void. you know what i mean?

Red = Your Main Targets (Enemy front-line) Orange = Targets you didn't optimally land the skill on Yellow = Targets that you didn't intend to hit

I disagree, I strongly feel that bards laning phase is metiocre in comparison to a huge majority of meta supports, in the sense that, he can get out poked (Sona/Karma), out sustained (Soraka), and is VERY easily all-inned. I feel like his laning phase capabilities are very reliant on capitalizing on the enemies mistakes (poor positioning and getting hit by Q), and his E is practically useless during lane unless you're setting up an elaborate jungle gank or trying to make an escape.

Otherwise, he's a fun champion nonetheless, but I do feel like he needs an addition to SOMETHING. Either a passive on his E, Q buffs (actual Q buffs not small damage tweaks), W movespeed/AP scaling, or cooldown reduction.

This is just from my experience playing as, with, and against Bards.

I'd like to see Q be able to pass through more units per rank. Considering it's his only CC, it should be able to hit more than 2 people.

I do like the mechanic behind it though. It's not like a Vayne/Poppy stun where you actually have to hit them into the wall - you just have to hit them and then the missile has to hit the wall. I've actually set up quite a few kills hitting someone with Q, them flashing, and then the Q hitting the wall and stunning them anyway.

Bard is a support that Relies on the Intelligence of you and your team as a whole, he changes the Field itself with most of his abilities, However many people cant connect with bard. His laning phase is amazing unless the enemy jungler gives you a good gank. bard is abit useless in that factor. as for his Teamfights... i do believe Bards R can be faster. it is hard to use. Another thing i would reccomend is that your team waits for the ult to happen before going in. This will allow your team to see who they will focus and how they will get to them. (As i said with my first statement, bards effectiveness is only as good as his teams Smarticles) His W does need to be changed to an HP scaling Ability. i see that Aurtank Bard is very effective but then it makes my W weak late game. The meeps are fine in my opinion. it is just a matter of making a Route of how your gonna collect them. use the mini map to devise your plan.

These are some boards i made while studying bard. i hope these will change your mind and show you that bard isnt a poop champ. its just that teams are Unreliable most of the time so adjustments need to be made.

His W needs to scale differently.

I think it's widely accepted that Utility-Tank Bard is best Bard. But building that way makes his W nothing more than a movement speed boost past lane phase. If it scaled off of his HP then it remains relevant throughout the game.

On Utility-Tank Bard, the heal is a measly 150 HP Minimum Heal ---> 230 HP Maximum Heal at Rank 5.

It needs to probably be more along the lines of 250 HP Minimum Heal ---> 500 HP Maximum Heal including my suggested HP ratio at ~3k HP.

So it would be something like a 4% HP Ratio on Minimum Heal and 9% HP Ratio on Maximum Heal.

Finally someone who speaks my language. True, i also think Bards Health armor and MR should scale as well. i feel like even with the tanky items he is able to use. bard is still super squishy. he feels more like a Tank who can manipulate the Field than a mage who can cause trouble.. I feel Chimes could have some relation to bringing up HP like +2 Health per chime. would benefit Bard quite alot wouldnt you think? and it would go parallel with a modification to his W from AP to HP.

ABlueQuaker1 votes

I think it would benefit him too much.

If anything, perhaps make the stun duration on Q slightly scale with Armor and/or MR.

I mean, most of my items are HP/Aura/Active + CDR. The most armor and MR I get are from Mikael's, Locket and Thornmail.

Caytheles1 votes

Meh,. im sure Riot has their reasons for that they did... maybe we are missing something... maybe the reccomended items arent the best ones. i will try to look into this further.

ABlueQuaker1 votes

No, Riot made the mistake.

They basically took an Utility-Tank kit and gave it Mage-Support scaling (and bad scaling at that). He has too much utility in his kit that doesn't scale with AP for him to make a good Mage-Support, but the kit also has too much AP Scaling (at least on W) for you to build him as a Utility-Tank.

Utility-Tank is still the best path by far, but the heal on W is irrelevant past lane phase. R needs to be tweaked to be a sweet-spot ability so that you can prioritize champions that you hit with it (whoever you don't hit with it should be your priority target, and the ones you do hit with it are the ones you don't want to deal with upfront).

i played with a bard today, so we fled by the middle lane and i saw i could flee simply running ahead without any problems but bard either couldn't or decided to use his tunnel, he made a tunnel at one of the side walls at the middle lane, so i realized that enemy following him will be ahead at me, tried to reach the entrance i.e. turned sideways and died ;_; nice support, rito

well, i didn't want to blame him so i said it was my fault but actually... we won though, but it was 1 hour long game

ABlueQuaker1 votes

Enemies following you through tunnels is a nice way to bottleneck them and destroy them with AoE ults.

Also, if you're playing as Bard and someone follows you through a tunnel, turn around and Q them because they'll already be next to a wall or they will have another enemy champion behind them.
