Don't make new players unlock shit.

Rune Slots, Mastery Points and Summoner Spells should be available from day 1.

Playing on a smurf with some people I convinced to play LoL and it's actually ridiculous. How do you learn anything by being denied the ability to try different things at an early point? Keystones are pretty crucial nowadays.

Learning this game is hell on earth

WAY better than dota. I tried both once I decided to get into a moba and I have to say the new play experience in league is 1000x better than dota.

Doesn't mean it's good though.

Dota has better tutorials, which is impressive considering how simplified items are in LoL.

Jet Sett2 votes

There's a higher learning curve, but in League it doesn't matter what you've learned until you hit the levels where you can use the proper summoner spell, use the correct masteries, and have the proper runes which you STILL won't have for a long time because of how expensive they are.

And in Dota there's no inherent disadvantage to facing a guy 1 or 2 levels higher than you due to matchmaking.

Don't you think smurfs are bad enough? Being a new player to LoL, I am always in matches with at least 1 smurf, who has had a LOT more experience in the game than me, meaning I get completely stomped all the time. How am I suppose to learn anything if I just get destroyed whenever I try?

I know that you can play against bots, but that doesn't benefit you at all. You may learn to get decent CS against a bot, but when you go against a player who constantly pressures you and the lane, what you've taught yourself in a bot game because completely useless, meaning you've wasted your time.

I've spent weeks playing bot games to the point I can almost get perfect CS on an ADC, but the second I go into a normal game, I get completely destroyed and stuggle to get CS because the support takes it, or the other ADC has completly pushed me from lane.

simple shit:

  1. dont play adc before level 30
  2. follow a guide, read it and go with the build
  3. spam 1 champion in every role so you learn the game instead of trying to learn 10000 champions
  4. proceed to stomp the bronze smurfs

well at least this worked for me when i started the game.

went ham on old kat and morg on my road to lvl 30 cause those were the only champs i played and it helped when i hit lv 30 cause i at least understod the champ i was playing so i didnt feed s hard as most people when they 1st hit lv 30 if they werent playing with friends over lv 30

My lvl 1-30 champion was Akali. So sentimental about that champion.

I fed bots and died to elder lizard until lvl 30. (>_>)

Qiyeanu Reeves1 votes

uh idk. I got to level 30 thru bot games 100% personally, but that was because the friend who invited me to the game only ever played bots even at level 30.

I didnt get into normals until I had full rune/mastery pages and had decent game understanding to bridging the gap there wasnt terrible

Mystic Shovel3 votes

This is because, and I believe this was mentioned a while back, Riot implemented a system which helps to detect when someone is smurfing (I assume this is done by comparing the smurfs average score with that of someone at a similar level) and when it finds one, it starts to auto-pair it with other smurfs. Only takes around 10 games for it to start happening.

ABlueQuaker1 votes

After a while MMR does its thing and puts smurfs against smurfs. tbh when I was learning LoL I would have liked an experienced person teaching me like I'm doing for my mates.

Jungle Lux God11 votes

The problem is that giving new players more options early on doesn't automatically make learning the game easier. As a matter of fact, it has the complete opposite effect by overloading too much information onto a newer player that makes it significantly harder to learn, especially when you consider the fact that League of Legends already has a crap ton of stuff that players need to learn.

The game's relative lack of options for newer players is a fundamentally good thing because it makes important early game decisions like runes and summoner spells for the player based on what the player should be using at a time when the player shouldn't have to worry about what runes or summoner spells to take so that they can focus more on basic fundamental mechanics such as last hitting.

Yalathanil1 votes

Exactly, if anything they need to rework the free champs for pre lvl 6. Why are we giving players Kha'Zix, or for that matter any of the 4 free ADC's? When you are a low level scrub YOU DONT NEED THESE CHAMPS! Blind queue is full of those autolocking "ashe"holes who have no clue what they are doing. Keep it simple, Rito.

Speedm82 votes

"... 4 free ADCs?..."

Jhin 4?! ADCS?!?!

Yalathanil1 votes

i did make a mistake, there are only three

Here are the staring champions as of now: Ashe Garen Jinx Khazix Lissandra Ryze Shyvana Varus MonkeyKing

Of them, three are ADC's, Ashe Jinx Varus

Not to get started on how Khazix is useless to new players pre lvl 6 when they lose him anyways.

Garen and wukong are about the best choice for new players.

rtbf761092711 votes

They choose very odd mages too. Lissandra is fairly simple in terms of how the spells work, but she really requires good use of zhonyas which is not something for brand new players. Ryze is needlessly complicated with all the different things that happen with flux and whatever. Would be way better to have like lux and annie or something

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

The list was made before Ryze's 12th rework.

rtbf761092711 votes

that's true but i feel like even the cooldown reduction concept on his other versions was still pretty complicated compared to a lot of other mage kits

Tier 2 Runes are 1 IP each. Unlock all of the Rune Slots at level 1 and let them play around with it - they'll either look up a guide or learn through trial and error. They're never going to learn how to cs when they're stuck with 50-60 base AD at level 1.

Jungle Lux God1 votes

I'm more concerned with masteries and summoner spells. Some of the spells (flash and teleport in particular) and the keystones are really hard for newer players to use effectively, while runes are just passive stats shoved onto your character.

Giving newer players access to these particular mechanics at the start of the game hinders their ability to learn how to play the game while also offering smurfs an easy way to grief newer players due to their relative mastery over these more complex mechanics.

Few things

  1. It takes like 1 or 2 weeks at most to reach level 30 now because Riot went retard mode gutting the required EXP
  2. It's like that so new players (not crybaby smurfs like you) don't get overwhelmed with all of the game's mechanics that they won't understand right away at the same time, they have enough of a cushion to learn about the game then they can plan out how they want their runes/masteries setup later.

Or they could never figure out how to jungle or play their champion because they don't have smite and 9 armor seals.

Yea.... cause pre-10 players know what jungle items are, what smite is, and why they die faster in the jungle from watching a pro player jungle.

rofl.

Pre-10 players likely won't even get a leash.

Yes, I apparently have to talk very slow for you They... don't.... know..... how..... to..... jungle.... That.... is... why... you.... youtube.... how..... to..... jungle.. Do you get it now or do I have to dumb it down so much further

Then what am I saying wrong obviously Einstein here would love to tell me because apparently typing " how to jungle" isn't how you learn "how to jungle" how just plain dumb are you, honestly because if you are as dumb as I think you are im just wasting time on an idiot.

idk, seems like I'm wasting time with a guy who doesn't understand the concept of "nobody pre-10 knowing what a jungle is".

Can't look up a video for a role you don't know exist until somebody in a bot game tells you about it.

Nobody is going to watch a foxdrop video, see him do red buff, and then go in a bot game without smite and 9 armor runes and say "that video explained armor runes and what smite items are.".

I actually think the progression is healthy for new players. However, there needs to be a tutorial every time you unlock something new. Especially when you unlock smite.

ArnoldSchwarzens6 votes

People seem to forget that Riot is a company and the main interest of a company is to make money. Sure, they COULD do all this but then they wouldn't give new players a drive to keep playing their game or to waste money on IP boosts and rune pages.

Trias0004 votes

People seem to forget that customers have the right to disagree with a company's policy towards them, even if they are completely aware that this policy is in said company's best interest (other than that it might drive those customers away, so it's actually quite debatable).

ArnoldSchwarzens4 votes

I'm not saying that you can't disagree with them, I'm just saying that they will just completely ignore it and won't do anything anyway.

Rune slots aside (as I think those should be free), your suggestion only helps smurfs, not new players. New players are already trying to learn the game and if you give them everything it overloads them, I remember this from experience and from seeing friends level up over the years. My friend is level for a few months now and still makes failed flash plays that are technically 'easy' for most experienced players to do and on Lux claims he doesn't use her shield because he plays her 'full aggressive'.

I think Masterys should go quicker because there is an issue with keystones being so powerful that if you're against people with them they have an edge but to unlocked all summoner spells at level 1 is just going to dilute their learning experience. It's hard to imagine because you have a smurf and are experienced, but this game isn't easy to grasp especially for a beginner.

50000000000000003 votes

What if we added a tutorial on each feature? For summoner spell, we can add a tutorial explaining what each spell does, and when you want it. Some sort of "puzzle" or "challenge" system would work fine, I think. Something like "escape these bots chasing you through the jungle" and makes you choose which summoner spells you want (answer would be ghost or flash), or "help your teammates in the bottom lane when you're in top lane" by using teleport. For masteries, something simpler would be fine, like just explaining what each tree is for, and what each choice gives you and what you give up by making those choices.

General Esdeath 5 votes

"Because we don't want them overwhelmed by all the options"

Riot says as there are a whole 9 summoner spells and 2 rune pages. Meanwhile in a game with 130+ characters that you're supposed to know what each does while not being able to play any except the 7 Riot deems free that week.

Dengeden4 votes

You learn things by trying stuff out. Even without runes, summoners and masteries, there's plenty.

You don't learn things by listening to your smurf friend tell you what to pick and build.

Tier 2 Runes are available at level one and you unlock one slot every level. They cost 1 IP each and therefore are extremely affordable. They're going to give you the stats you want for a bargain price. When you hit level twenty, then you can start spending IP to get slightly better stats in the form of Tier 3 Runes.

EDIT: Did I provide misinformation...?

He is talking about the fact that you get one slot each level I guess. For example, you are Level 15 and can't put up another Quintessence yet. You don't have to RIGHT to build the page yet to use his words.

Oh I see what you're saying.

I think that unlocking slots as you progress isn't that bad. It encourages players to continue playing the game so they get better stats, and anyways, the players they'll be playing against will have similar stats because they'll be similarly leveled. Giving the players slots one at a time also won't be so overwhelming. They don't need to make thirty choices at once; instead, they can choose which Rune to get each level. Finally, if a newer player doesn't realize he has to buy Runes for his or her Rune Page for free stats, it won't be so punishing if he's versus a player with a full Page. Now, if a new player without Runes goes up against another player with Runes, the one with Runes will only have a minor advantage. That advantage will increase with each level the player forgets to buy Runes, but at least matches won't be so difficult early on.

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

I disagree, make it so it doesn't take nearly as long, yes, but new players shouldn't be bombarded with everything. A better idea might be to have a generic rune page and mastery page set for new players but have it only be customizable after they play the game for a while and get used to it.

SeaGodUrronuos1 votes

Then they most likely won't change them unless someone teaches them or they do their own research, they would have to look over ALL the masteries and learn which goes with what champ and everything its quite overwhelming to new players whether you think so or not

Mystic Shovel2 votes

I remember levelling up my first account in season 5. I actually enjoyed the experience of steadily unlocking things, but was annoyed by how long it took. Back then of course it was double the XP to get to level 30 so I don't know what the grind feels like today. Players should have to unlock things as they go, it triggers dopamine in the brain which helps cause addiction, which Rito want because mon3y r gud. In doing so, it also keeps the player interested.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

I dunno. I think back to my first time playing, and I think it's a decent drip, tbh.

It's not designed to make sense for smurfs. In fact, if anything, they are trying to discourage smurfing. When I was an actual new player, it was aight.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

The idea is to learn thing gradually and ease new players into the game.

I can't tell you if it is effective because I haven't been new in a long time. You can't reasonably judge it for the same reason. The new player experiences suffers heavily from smurfs.

It is a common and effective approach for a lot of games. Especially ones with complexity on the scale of LoL. Can it be improved? Most likely. Though I'm not in a very good position to objectively judge how. We would need genuinely new and uncontaminated player feedback to make that evaluation.

Quepha1 votes

Delete runes from the game Instead of unlocking masteries, just have locked and hidden pages for each champion (just show them the keystone that was picked) At level 10 the player can choose their keystone with the rest of the page preset At level 20 the player can fully customize rune pages Gradual unlocking of summoner spells and game modes is fine, but locking them out of raw power before they max their summoner level is just wrong.
