Some Ways to Deal With Ivern

We all know and love/hate the wonderful Ivern. Plenty of people say he needs nerfs, few others retort "He's fine!" But in the endless arguments that go on about him, no one ever discusses, or even ASKS for, ways to deal with him. While I'm no expert, I'll offer a bit of advice (and welcome others to do the same!) on what to do when you're playing against this champ. NOTE: This is not a discussion on whether he's OP or not. It's just to help people deal with him.

  1. Ward the side you don't start on!
  • The likelihood of Ivern invading you in the beginning is pretty high, especially in lower elo, and he can do this in literal seconds. Walk in, pop one of your buffs, go back to his own camps, and keep you behind for days. Ward the side you're not starting on, and if he goes to invade, you should do the same!
  1. Invade!
  • Ivern doesn't get a leash. Because of this, people will TYPICALLY be in their lanes. Try securing one or two of your own camps and then invade his own! He can only smite to secure a single camp during his first rotation, so it's pretty likely you'll catch one he'd just started and is far off from completing. It takes his health to start a camp, so if you take one he's started, you're leaving him low on health and with very few options to retaliate.
  1. Consider Graves TahmKench Nunu, etc.
  • These champs make Daisy their *****. Graves and Nunu have really strong, effective clears, and Nunu having what's essentially a second smite allows him to take away one of Ivern's greatest tools. Tahm is also great for eating her! While the catfish isn't necessarily great for invades, he works well against Ivern in devouring key targets, or allies who've been snared, and the other two work great for invades.
  1. Deep wards mid-late!
  • Not knowing where Ivern is, is one of the reasons he destroys you so quickly. He can waltz around freely in a wardless jungle, taking whatever camps he wants when his smite is up (and once he's got his ionian boots, this is VERY often) in seconds. This will leave your jungler behind, and is likely to negatively impact your lanes as well. Get some wards up in both your jungle and the enemy's, and you're MUCH less susceptible to Ivern's easy counter-jungling.

I know some of these may sound a little redundant, but hey, they can help if you do it all properly. Maybe it won't guarantee you a win, but at least you'll be able to fight back. If anyone else has helpful tips on how to deal with Ivern, drop em below! [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

-Graves, nunu, and lee are all great counters for Ivern.

-And yes, invading at lvl 1 will be very effective against him. However, continue to apply pressure in his jg. You will almost always come out ahead.

-Also, if possible, during fights focus daisy. Obviously dont focus daisy over the enemy adc, but the quicker you dispatch Daisy, the quicker you take away a large portion of iverns dmg. And in the off chance that you find yourself in a 1v1 with Ivern, focus daisy first.

That passive of his holds a huge power budget behind it. So If they want to keep it unique and not resort to reworking it they must find a way to put a wall on it. He can access his passive way too easily, and smite is covering part of it's weakness. My suggestion would be to increase the health cost when applying his passive on the enemy jungle early on or add a cooldown timer of some sorts to enemy camps or sth like this.

I know 2 100% fool proof ways to deal with Ivern. Ban him or pick him first.

Offer all the advice you want, but they'll never beat my 100% of the time working ways. :p

Sometimes you won't get the option. I've had games where I was second pick, no option to ban, and kept telling my team to ban Ivern. They wouldn't, and enemy first-picked him.

He does get through sometimes, and you'll have to deal with him sooner or later. :)

soon there will be 10 bans per game so, that wont be a factor. I've always said Riot should focus their buff/nerfs based of champion play rate and ban rate. Players dont play the weakest champs for a reason. and they ban the strongest for a reason. Even if the champions are not tech op 1v1 theres something in their kit that puts them on that ban list.

When I go into games where bans are habitually things like Swain/Teemo/Darius and Lee/Kha/Kled, I doubt Ivern will be banned 100% of the time.

Buffing/nerfing based on play rate is a bad idea. You got champs like Ryze, Leblanc, and Azir who don't see a lot of use (and when they do get used, a lot of the time they lose) but they are VERY strong champs. Lee sees a lot of play and wins half the time, but he's good early and just falls off late.

That's a discussion for a separate thread though - not entirely relevant to what I'm going for here.

consider this... Your the one who wants him banned. there are 10 bans. there are also 5 people on both teams you are 1 of them. So yes he will and can be banned 100% of the time if u ban him. You will always get a ban because everyone gets 1 ban.

Holy shit this is really helpful. Now I'm actually looking forward to playing against Ivern to try this out.

I hope it helps! Map awareness is Ivern's downfall, really.

Quoting to put in the OP. Graves, Nunu, and Tahm all deal with Ivern SOOO easy. And if you're lookin at champs outside of the jungle, Syndra messes her up bad too haha.

Most people complain about Ivern yet they don't even bother to give constructive advice on how/what to nerf about him.

But nonetheless early game aggressors like Lee, Graves, Kha'Zix can easily cheese him and put him behind so hard.

RenownedWheat421 votes

Indeed. This is why you see these sorts of counter-picks in the LCS whenever Ivern actually makes it through. Denying Ivern his early farm sets him back HEAVILY, and delaying that power spike is incredibly important.

I don't really jungle but that's the approach I went with. As Yi I only needed one potion to start so I also grabbed a Control Ward and plopped it in my Blue bush while I went to his blue and stole everything :D Just warded heavily and counter-jungled every time I found out where he was, he was kind of pissed :P

RenownedWheat421 votes

Exactly what you need to do. Most people I've seen pick Ivern only because they expect it to be freelo, not because they're actually great junglers, especially at lower elos. Keep Ivern from getting most of his farm and he'll never see his power spike.

People also forget how team orientated Ivern actually is and he requires a lot to reach his full potential.

  1. Ward the side you don't start on!

It literally doesnt matter at all. I've been in two games where I dropped a ward on my blue and starting clearing wolves so I had my Smite up for blue. You legitimately don't have enough time to stop him stealing your blue when you are 1 camp away. He walks in, you start running, he steals it, Qs you in the face, and walks away

  1. Invade!

You cant just invade whenever you feel like it. Thats how you feed.

  1. Consider Graves TahmKench, Nunu etc.

Graves is permabanned. Tahm is utter garbage. And Nunu is boring as shit to play

  1. Deep wards mid-late!

This has absolutely zero realtion to Ivern. This applies to literally every champ in the game

RenownedWheat421 votes

Super negative for no reason, but hey, let's rebut this because why not.

  1. It does matter. You can't stop Ivern from stealing your own stuff, but if you know he's on your top jungle, you can invade his bot jungle easy. It DOES matter. It's not just to save your own buff, because 95% of the time you won't be able to.

  2. You can't invade whenever you like, but no one is expecting to lose an early buff, least of all Ivern. Unless his laners use all their wards on protecting the Ivern (which would be dumb early, since that makes them susceptible to you as a jungler), some of his camps will be free for you to take in return.

  3. Graves isn't really permabanned. I've been able to get him a few times myself. Tahm isn't garbage in the slightest, I've rolled over MANY other junglers with him. Nunu might be boring, but he's effective. Also, note I said "etc." at the end there, implying that many other junglers (namely Khazix LeeSin) can be Ivern's demise in the early game.

  4. Yes, it applies to literally every jungler. But it helps. Sometimes basic stuff is what you need to remember - if people warded more, then Ivern wouldn't just easily walk in and take all their stuff.

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

Your argument against 1 and 2 are dependent on each other. You ward to verify where he is so that you can invade...

Before pre season 7 I used to just hide in the bush by red and ambush when he tried his buff steal thing. I miss Krug start.
