After looking at Blitzcrank's kit on his wiki page he just seems . . . weird.

If I would have never actually seen him in-game and I would only have seen his kit, I would have never guessed that he's a support. His numbers and weird scalings would make you believe that he either would be an AD bruiser in the jungle or toplane or an AP Assassin.

His Q and ultimate have extremely high AP ratios and base damage, his Q has up to 300 magic damage with a 100% AP ratio and his ult has 500 base damage with another 100% AP ratio. If you look at the kit of your average mage or AP assassin this just seems HUGE even though in reality playing AP Blitzcrank comes close to just trolling.

Then there's something even weirder about him, his W not only gives him movement speed as everyone knows it also gives him . . . ATTACK SPEED? Wut? And his E is not like a Leona Q where it has a base damage plus an AP ratio, it's actually just 100% of your AD as bonus physical damage and it stays at that value, since it doesn't even scale with level, the only thing that really happens is just his cooldown going down with rank. Yet again, if I would never have seen it in game, I would probably play an auto-attack based AD bruiser version of him in the toplane or in the jungle with stuff like Trinity Force, Hydra or maybe even a Manamune build for his passive. And yet again, doing this kind of thing comes really fucking close to trolling when it comes to what it actually is like in-game.

I'm not even complaining - all these weird abilities and mix of ratios and scaling somehow makes him work as a support and not as what Riot probably intended him to be when they created him back in Beta or Alpha or whenever that was. As long as he's not either underpowered or overpowered I'm fine with where he is, it's just so freaking weird when you realize that THIS works.

I'm pretty sure his original design was an AD bruiser. But his hook kind of threw him into the support role. I remember back in season 4 a lot of people use to play him AD in the jungle.

LightSword21 votes

He was initially supposed to be a mana-tank/bruiser, building things like item 3027 item 3004 item 3078 item 3110 .

Ralanr2 votes

I wanna try this now.

I once tried to build him full mana (stack one tear item, start the other for loads of free ad and ap), then I faced a Teemo in the toplane and gave up

This is correct.

He was originally meant to be a top-lane bruiser, but nerfs to his mana shield forced him bottom lane.

Mhihnj5 votes

also his hook was targeted before

ArnoldSchwarzens9 votes

WAIT WHAT? Who the fuck thought that this was a good idea lmao.

Melledoneus2 votes

The same person who thought Rengar's E should be targeted as well.

Steelflame4 votes

This was back at a time where Kayle's ult CD was lower than Blitz's hook CD, think about that.

A Basic Island1 votes

was it really?? how old are you?!?

Been here since S1 and idr tha <.<

LordGeovanni2 votes

you think thats it in addition to being targeted you could recall cast before it ended and hook an enemy back to your base or was it teleport one of the two. its still on you tube some where

Sire Hippington2 votes

His hook allows him to be a good support, yes, but it's his lack of wavecontroll(no aoe besides ult), sustain and easy tradeing that keeps him from beeing used in a sololane.

Him beeing a good support is what keeps him from beeing buffed/changed for sololanes though.

4th3t0s12 votes

This is because his original design was as a toplane bruiser; he just shifted towards botlane because of his utility and CC. Similar thing happened to Nautilus

Pale Pirate2 votes

And Morgana ...

No wait, she was supposed to be a support but then people starting playing her on the midlane.

Noones remembers that day anyway...

4th3t0s1 votes

To be perfectly honest, the only champions that were literally from the get-go intended as supports are Soraka, Sona, Taric, Braum, Leona and Nami. Literally everyone else had a solo-lane presence at some point, even Janna.

SH Azykan3 votes

leona was intended to be a top laner

LordGeovanni1 votes

strong solo lane through spells and godlike ganks initiator. if anything her passive screams jungle more than support but her numbers just cant keep up

SH Azykan1 votes

if you go redsmite > tiamat, finish cinderhulk it isnt too bad. the ganks are devastating and long respawn times on jg camps means she doesnt fall behind too hard just chain ganking. I do think her w would need buffed damage vs monsters though to break into viability.

LordGeovanni1 votes

lots of champions can jungle but i dont think that leona can break into vaible jungler with just a slight w damage boost. eeven in support i think leona needs a boost to damage on all her spells even if they have to revert q cooldown change

SH Azykan1 votes

right now W + AA+ Q + tiamat active almost kills the baby raptors once it is built, if her W did a touch more damage she could clear them without the extra 2-3 autos (cinderhulk kills them slower so rushing it instead doesnt work either) and would actually let her go jg again. she wouldnt be remotely top tier or even playable in diamond (well maybe a random 1 trick would show up) but could at least see some play in goldish maybe? at least I wouldnt feel horrid in norms with it anymore XD

lulu was meant to be a support, shifted to solo lanes after pre season 4 ap ratio buffs to enchanters.

Yes, I stand corrected that I missed a few; didn't have every champion on my mind when I posted that comment. Just trying to clarify that initial design doesn't indicate exactly what role a champion will fill in the changing meta.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Taric top and jungle was a thing before...... before..... 'before the rework' (broken hearted weeps)(if you are talking about solo lane presnce at some time also soraka mid was a thing then soraka top as well as sona mid being popular season 3). now he is a champion that is useless out side of his ult and relies on the enemy being either stupid enough to fight his ult or being weak enough where you would have won without it anyway.

4th3t0s1 votes

I said "initial design." what you're talking about is exactly my point that design doesn't cement them ONLY to that initial role.

LordGeovanni1 votes

while you did say inital design for part of it though some were inaccurate you also said champions in other lanes at some point and put pure support janna as the soruce now if you are talking lane changes while they were makeing champions i have no doubt that taric was initially made for top lane just from how his kit used to work or at some point had top lane in the design but the problem with that is riot developers dont give every last detail about every last champion in the design process

4th3t0s1 votes

Yes, and thanks for the input. I never meant to imply that what I posted was 100% correct, it's all stated as an opinion; just giving more examples (to a point) of how design doesn't automatically determine placement in the meta.

LordGeovanni1 votes

strong solo lane through spells and godlike ganks initiator and she could be just fine top lane she would just be one designed to get lots of easy ganks from her jungler. if anything her passive screams jungle more than support but her numbers just cant keep up

The reason why Blitz is relegated to Support most of the time is because he can't reliably trade with others.

His attack animation is slow as shit, so his Power Fist can hardly be used as a trading tool.

His Rocket Grab's mana cost is so high that he can't use it to begin trades on his own often enough to force lane opponent's out.

He may have great ratios and base damage values, but he has a one-way avenue for expressing those damage values, which really only works in bot lane.

Prestige Eve3 votes

He can't reliably trade due to the nerfs he had when he was shafted to bot lane. He was able to fight guys like Darius and Riven without his Q back when he had his original numbers.

Geauxx3 votes

Most supports have (or use to anyways) have higher scalings to keep them up to par in the matches.

I don't think riot had too much thought into him that early in the game's life... Maybe he will get a rework one day.

LightSword4 votes

He wasn't originally designed to be a support, that's the thing.

Danjeng2 votes

The supports now generally have better base damages/shielding, rather than scalings. That's why healing+shielding amplification is built on supports, rather than AP.

The whole point of a good support is that they do not need as expensive items to function well compared to carries. Thus they usually do not rely on scalings. Blitzcrank is an exception, because it is an old champion who was originally meant for another role. Luckily his hook and knockup happen to be good support abilities.

Ralanr3 votes

He's an old champion. They are weird. There's no reason imo that Malphite has 100% AP scaling on his ult, but he does.

ArnoldSchwarzens2 votes

I mean would make sense that he scales well with AP, though 100% probably is a lot . . . but it's not like Blitzcrank who in theory scales well with every stat in existence, I don't see random AD ratios or attack speed in Malphite's kit.

LightSword2 votes

That's because they reworked his w xD

50000000000000002 votes

Used to be liike 80% bonus damage on his AA or something?

LightSword2 votes

Yeah, it would increase his ad by a percentage and essentially give him a free item 3077.

OurLestrade3 votes

Like Leona he wasn't meant to be a support at first

LightSword8 votes

You say that, yet Riot intentionally made her passive as it is, so the alternative to supporting would be to have a useless passive until ganks/teamfights.

Teridax683 votes

Back in the day, Blitzcrank actually truly was a bruiser. In Season 2 and throughout some part of Season 3, he was a very capable jungler, and could also go top lane. Eventually, though, he couldn't compete with fighters that had much more sustained combat capabilities, and ended up shifting to bot lane. In the end, the only reason he survived to this day without some kind of drastic rework is because his tremendous potential burst is counterbalanced by his natural unreliability, amplified even further if you ever decide to go full AP.

Champion Skin2 votes

Well his W change was a pretty big nerf to any bruiser/AD build (and jungle since AS is quite useful in the jungle) Since the reduced duration means the AS buff is less useful and the change also made it less useful for sticking to people to slap them with auto attacks and E

But yeah other then that I can't think of any changes that has happened to blitz for quite some time (except maybe changing some numbers or something)

If I would have never actually seen him in-game and I would only have seen his kit, I would have never guessed that he's a support.

I stopped reading right there because he was never intended to be a support. He was intended to be a top lane fighter but ended up going bot because of how extremely poweful his Q was at the time. It originally had lower CD and did more damage because the enemy laners he was intended to fight against could deal with it, but it was a death sentence for botlane champs. This meant it had to be nerfed over and over until it wasn't as deadly to botlane champs.. but this ruined his ability to work anywhere else...

He has the wonkiest scalings. Hilariously, if you play him with a full AD build and catch an ADC out, you could simply E-crit into a oneshot. It's tragic, yet highly amusing when you pull it off.

There used to be AD ratios in Malphite's kit. In fact you gain 40% bonus AD with W active IRRC. AD ASSASSIN MALPHITE USED TO BE A THING

Ultimate Deadpoo2 votes

As long as you build a sightstone and a relic shield first it is perfectly fine to go full AP Blitz.

Blitz has always been a strange Champion, but we'd have him no other way.

The Governer5 votes

Full AP Blitzcrank is fine and dandy for early game, but once mid to late game rolls in. You will find it incredibly hard to win games due to how squishy you are and how you have no reliable DPS, and how enemy tanks can bodyblock your hook, unless you are unbelievably fed.

AP tank and full tank are the ways to go.

Champion Skin2 votes

Ahh yes that makes me remember the quite big nerf AD Blitz (or jungle) builds got when his W got nerfed and the duration was reduced (in return for higher MS but with a slow at the end) but it also nerfed the duration of the attack speed buff

General Esdeath 2 votes

He was meant to be a top lane bruiser. Riot never had a support role planned.

deadlychuck1 votes

You use to have a lot more build diversity back in the day, so multiple types of scaling were pretty common, even if it was only 1 or 2 abilities (AP yi anyone?)

However, if i recall correctly blitz released as a kind of bruiser, not support. Yet as the meta developed into "feed the ADC kills and let them slaughter everything", a 100% pull was pretty useful for delivering kills to the ADC.

Sadly riot would rather limit the ways players can play champions and release a lot of different champions now, instead of allowing for build diversity and player identity. Every champion is now played in a very specific style, else they're unreasonably weaker. A few champions have slipped past riot's design team, but often out of lack of concern for their impact. Attrox's E & R scaling, Blitz, yorick and malz until recently, just to name a few.
