So if Tahm can't eat buffs because it would make counterjungling too easy

ArnoldSchwarzens··185 votes·7,949 views

Then please explain why Nunu is allowed to have consume and Syndra who doesn't even jungle in the first place is allowed to use her W on buffs.

Also, if you are really that worried about it lacking counterplay, another thing you could do is making Tahm treat buffs like champions so that he not only has to apply 3 passive stacks before he can swallow them but also is slowed down while they're in his belly.

Yes, but don't you think its kind of unfair?

LordGeovanni3 votes

i dont think its unfair he is basically the only champion in the game tied to a summoner spell to work efficiently. its unfair that he can do it but tahm gets shut out of it and has recived numerious guts from moving his ult to passive to needing to stack up the damage and it didnt even get extra damage compensation like it would have if it was a mage or adc.

It's more amusing to put his passive on his own camps, and watch them try to camp you when you're just lollygagging elsewhere. XD

Astôlfo12 votes

Because Ivern has to go through a channel to put the Grove on first, and if the enemy jungler was there and didn't bother stopping Ivern, they're dumb as fuck and deserve to lose the buff.

NiceTryVi21 votes

The grove only takes a few seconds to place, and smite makes it so he doesn't have to wait the 40 seconds. He can place a grove on his topside buff when they spawn, walk over to the enemy buff, grove+smite it, and then walk back to his side and take his buff now that the grove is done, all before the enemy jungler was even done with half their jungle. Then Ivern can go to his bot buff and grab that one too because his smite is up still, so the enemy jungler gets a grand total of 1 of the 4 buffs on the field.

RavenMagus5 votes

Ivern also cannot contest a buff if the other jungler is there, so there's two sides to the Ivern coin.

NiceTryVi1 votes

If he is invading, then yeah, hes screwed. But since smite auto-consumes a grove, and he doesn't have to be nearby while the grove forms, his clear time is fast enough that an invade is unlikely, especially if he get ahead via the buff steals.

RavenMagus5 votes

He has to set up groves that do take a while in the early game, and he actually gets pretty low after a couple groves. It's not impossible to invade Ivern.

He's also terrible at ganking. Sure, he's got a root, but it's a fairly slow skillshot, and he doesn't rocket in and deal insane amounts of damage like Lee, Vi, Hecarim, or a lot of other junglers do.

NiceTryVi5 votes

If it is so easy to counter him and avoid his ganks, how is he the #3 jungler right now? He is clearly very strong right now.

Astôlfo2 votes

Because he doesn't take damage from the very punishing jungle and has amazing early pressure. And sharing buffs is incredibly strong.

NiceTryVi3 votes

Amazing early pressure Can't gank

Therefore his pressure is from buff steals then, glad you agree

doesn't take damage from the very punishing jungle he actually gets pretty low after a couple groves

Uh...what? So does he get low or not?

You have contradicted yourself twice trying to say the #3 jungler isn't strong...

Astôlfo3 votes

? I'm not Raven.

NiceTryVi3 votes

You take up his side. Your icons got me, but the fact remains you contradict him twice while trying to prove me wrong...

Astôlfo3 votes

I take up his general side. I don't agree with his specific points. Ivern's level 2 cheese gank pressure (walk or Flash in, Q the enemy target, laner jumps on them, E for shield and then the slow) is incredibly strong, and is almost always guaranteed to be a Flash-or-death ultimatum if the laner isn't prepared/warded for his arrival. His ganks are strong. Not because IVERN is strong. It's because he brings a ton of utility and engage potential instead, so that his laners can do the killing.

Ivern cannot contest a buff if the other jungler is there. He doesn't take damage from the jungle monsters, but he does pay a health and mana cost for each Grove created. So he still does get extremely low after a few Groves. This makes it extremely risky for Ivern against anyone who can just invade and kill him in early, unless the Ivern intentionally loses time and EXP by not setting up as many Groves.

Sure, he could take his own buff and wander over to the enemy buff and hope it's not warded and hope he can just channel and wait for Smite to come back up so he can steal it. Or, he could do the thing that's far easier and far more helpful and just gank midlane or such and burn their Flash or get the enemy mid killed. Or any other lane really. His pressure is his utility and engage. Not his buff stealing.

He's #3 because the new jungle is currently extremely punishing to just about every single single-target jungler. The only ones doing well really are the ones with AoE or otherwise quick clears in early and those that can abuse CotC. He circumvents said punishingly damaging jungle altogether with his Groves, and brings utility and amazing engage potential which can be devastating if the rest of his team follows up well.

Larcos3 votes

I don't know, that's one of the FEW things ivern can do. If you look at his skills set objectively, they do very little. Thus, most of his power budget is in that ability to dominate in counter jungling. IMO.

Shuyin17839 votes

Honestly I'd be perfectly fine with having to apply the 3 stacks before eating, and even the movement slow that comes with eating a champion. It sucks so badly that I can't use tahm's main damage source to kill buffs so I have to "borrow" Gromp to take blue and a raptor or krug (Q-W the Krug over the wall) to take red.

SpecterVonBaren15 votes

Hell, just letting him apply his passive stacks would be good, even if they still didn't let him eat the buffs.

Like I already mentioned in another thread: The same reason why Kled is not gaining courage when he kills jungle creatures. Kled is designed to be a top laner. Riot is not forbidding players to take Kled into the jungle, but if they want to do so they have to make it work themselves. Kled won't receive buffs favouring a position he is not meant for.

Same applies to Tahm Kench. He is designed to be a support and top laner. You can still play Tahm Kench in the jungle, but Riot doesn't have to change parts of his kit to make him better as a jungler if he is not meant as one in the first place.

Otherwise, these kinds of requests will flood Riot. Next time Kindred mains are complaining that they are not able to lane with them properly, because their stacks are in the jungle. So they will demand that every second cannon minion on lane is marked, enabling Kindred to get their stacks even if they get played bot lane as adc.

You see what I mean? People will always demand buffs for their champ to enable him in another position than he is actually meant for. If Riot does it, even more will arise. Riot designs the champions with specific roles in mind, if you want to play them in another, figure out how to do that without asking for changes from Riot.

Well for one, these buffs would actually make him better in all roles. Sure they would help the most with jungling but that doesn't mean it's only a buff to jungle Tahm. But on top of this, Tahm as a support is not very good. He has sported the second lowest win rate all season, only above Nunu, and has only been looked at once over the summer during the support patch. And during that patch he got nerfed even though they were claimed to be "buffs" in the patch notes. Only recently with the preseason changes has Tahm's win rate started to look better than other supports but his win rate has actually gone down. The reason for this is the introduction of more off-meta support picks such as Taliyah, Galio, and Fiddlesticks. Regardless of whether or not these buffs are appropriate for Tahm, he does deserve something. He has basically been the Azir of supports all season (though not quite that bad) and has been largely ignored.

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

Same argument could be made about the examples I gave. Letting Kled gain courage for killing jungle creeps or marking cannon minions on lane would actually benefit every role for these 2 champions. Kindred is pretty weak right now (struggling more than Tahm Kench support in my opinion), still Riot won't make this change giving Kindred stacks on lanes besides champion kills.

Tahm Kench support may be struggling, but that change wouldn't help much if you ask me. I think they should specifically buff his performance as a support. Giving him a buff for another position with a slight increase of utility in other roles (would it really improve him as support?) to help him being weak in his main role doesn't make sense.

Does Syndra's ability to lift the buffs make her a better mid laner? I guess the point OP is trying to make is that this change would not add as much utility as people think and that there is really no point in having Tahm's W unusable against jungle buffs to begin with.

Chembaron Yamada2 votes

Just assuming but it could be the same why they intentionally lowered Camille's healing from jungle monster and deny courage for Kled from killing jungle creeps. The champion is not designed for that role in the first place, so let's put limiters on their skills to secure that this champion is less effective in this role.

You're still ignoring the question of why Syndra can displace the buffs...

Chembaron Yamada2 votes

Syndra is not really part of the new generation of champions, she was released in september 2012. For me it seems back then Riot was just implementing what seems "cool" for a champion to have, while not focusing on the role of the champion that much.

That's why champions like Azir and Kalista exist. Riot stated they put just stuff they thought would be cool to have into these champions, now it turns out that they got too much and are unbalancable, waiting for their rework.

I think they introduced that mechanic just as another cool feature for Syndra. Since it doesn't create any balancing problems for her (since it doesn't really improve her mid lane power like you said and Syndra is still not even close to be a viable jungler), there is simply no reason to delete this feature right now.

Meanwhile for Tahm Kench, there is simply no reason to add this feature now, because he is not intended as a jungler. I am talking about a shift of Riot's design philosophy here. Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against giving Tahm Kench the ability to devour buffs. It wouldn't make him an OP jungler, so why not? But analysing the information I have, I think it is very unlikely to happen.

The fact that in Tahm Kench's spotlight it gets pointed out that he is not able to devour buffs, makes me think that it was an intended decision by Riot to not give him unnecessary jungling power.

"Since it doesn't create any balancing problems for her," you say this as if it would create a massive balance problem for Tahm Kench to eat the buffs, which mind you can't do over walls like Syndra can. It is just flat out bias to say there is no reason to delete it Syndra's ability to do this, that's how champions become overloaded in the first place. This has nothing to do with new vs. old champions.

Chembaron Yamada2 votes

Now you are misunderstanding me intentionally. I clearly said it wouldn't make Tahm Kench an OP jungler and I have nothing against that change myself.

I just say in the last time I never saw that Riot was giving a buff to a champion to improve his performance in a role which the champion actually isn't aimed for. That has nothing to do with myself, I just see what Riot is doing the last time and interpret it as "that specific change you are asking for in this thread is unlikely to happen because of Riot's previous actions in this regard".

Vi was meant for top on release (if you were there when she came out), and Riot began balancing her for jg Leona was meant for top, and got a mini-rework for her to be a support Blitzcrank was meant for top and jungle, and got pushed to support Brand was meant for mid, now he's basically balanced around support Zyra was meant for mid, now he's basically balanced around support Graves was meant to ADC, and was balanced around jg and top Maokai jg->support Nautilus jg ->support, Rito gutted the jg, his INTENDED role because of support Naut Shyvana was top for a while, season 3 Trundle jg is dead

More recently, Ziggs was buffed to make his sieging stronger for mid, but also buffed "APC Bot" Ziggs

Chembaron Yamada4 votes

Let me rephrase that: the new generation of champions Riot is designing is meant for a specific role. Look at kits like Kindred, Ivern, Kled, Camille... Kindred and Ivern are clearly determined as junglers with their passives. Meanwhile Riot made intentional choices for Kled and Camille to keep them less effective in the jungle (no courage from monsters/less healing from Camille's W against non epic monsters).

Graves was designed as a bot laner, that's right. It was an unexpected result that he is going to get played mostly in jungle. Since that arise by itself, they had to do something about him to keep him under control. If I remember correctly, Graves didn't receive any buffs to improve his jungle performance, but got nerfed because he got unintentionally played there and was overperforming. So they had to intervent into this.

Most of the other examples you give are actually pretty old and mostly their role was not as clearly defined as newer champions. If you watch Vi's champion spotlight, it seems they had jungle in mind too, next to top. It gets mentioned that you should learn W first when jungling.

So for me my argument still stands: the new generation of champions is created with a role in mind and until now I didn't see any of them buffed to improve their performance in another role.

Morticianjohn4 votes

Actually Graves wasn't used in the jungle much until his shotgun changes which buffed his jungle performance and nerfed his ADC performance.

DrCyanide5 votes

I think part of the pain is that the Jungle changes nerfed Tahm. Before he could at least eat the small creatures at blue/red and spit them out at the buff for damage, now he can't even use the ability without using another Jungle camp all together.

Sagan Forever11 votes

Why does nuns q not work on enemy champions? Maybe they are intended for different reasons. Nunu's is purely for jungle control, and Tahms is to eat allies in danger or enemies trying to flee. That is like saying why does yasou wind wall not move like braum's unbreakable, or why is Ashe ranged while Nasus is melee. Different kits are for different reasons and because of that have different strengths and weaknesses.

DrCyanide5 votes

The problem is more about how the jungle changes to buffs made it harder for Tahm (and Fiddlesticks) for no clear reason. Before you could eat the small creatures and use it as a projectile, but that option was removed when the small creatures were.

Xonra8 votes

Think you are trying too hard to find logic in all the hypocritical b.s. Riot says at any given time.

They have nerfed champs for point and click, and rework it out of kits, but others will have it, have it buffed and added to new kits, etc. I mean, there was a time when Morello was "in charge" of balance related things that he had a hard on for hating Soraka (this was long before her rework), and how healing was boring and so on. Yet now we have item 3107.

Just recently they made comments about how they essentially screwed up with Azir and Kalista with wanting "unique kits" over good gameplay. Camille is an overloaded mess of stuns, shields, heals, slows, inescapable boxes, screen long dash, and so on.

Honestly if Riot told me yesterday they weren't a big fan of fire I'd expect the Riot HQ to burst into flames this time next week as they were experimenting with a new and exciting flaming parking lot.

Let's not forget how Sejuani had her time, and not every champ should be in every meta. Now they are saying straight up that they don't want to nerf LeeSin too much, so he will stay in every meta. They have NO idea what they want, and it doesn't help that sometimes it is 4 different people potentially trying to tell us what they "want".

doiminat0r36007 votes

Nunu is able to consume because it doesnt displace and consume provides an interesting and unique ability in the jungle.

Syndra is allowed to displace because she isnt doing 32% max HP damage to the buff or 500-1000 damage to the buff with her one ability.

TahmKench devour still does the damage but doesnt displace. It would be way too strong if it displaced like normal.

Blitz isn't a jungler either but he can harass the jg by pulling and stealing the buff.

I think the point is that Tahm needs a buff and his inability to devour the buffs doesn't make much sense and is only there for gameplay purposes and right now it wouldn't hurt gameplay much to give him the ability to devour buffs considering how weak Tahm is.
