The History of Kha'Zix

http://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/img/champion/splash/Khazix_0.jpg Chapter 1: The Prime Time Ah yes, back in the day of his prime, Kha'Zix was the must ban. An extraordinary jungler who even Rengar feared to duel. He would jump into lane, eat your face, and disappear like nothing of it. This continued for many patches and how the community did complain. Eventually, Riot saw this big ol' bug was making issues so they said to themselves "Alright, lets nerf it." So, they nerfed the living shit out of the Kha's jump Bonus AD ratio. Kha'Zix was still extremely powerful. Riot was confused since Im pretty sure they were sure such a huge nerf would do Kha in, but it didnt seem to be enough.

Chapter 2: The Fall First, they attacked his Q, reducing it's missing health bonus damage for Isolated targets when evolved from 8% to 6%. That was all good and dandy, but it didnt seem to be enough for he was still eating people. So it began, the fall of the bug. They increased the Isolation radius till it began to border Gangplank's ultimate AoE radius for how big it was. They then made turrets count as units for Isolation and increased the window that Kha could be seen during his R in between casts. Kha was beginning to be in a balanced state... or at least they thought. Kha dropped off the face of the earth and was never seen again. They buffed his E cool down, but its cool down was still dreadfully long. They noticed Kha's abysmal stats and such and so reworked his Q... but then they realized it turned out to be a nerf overall since the missing health damage was removed and the base Q without being evolved was nerfed to a terrible state. They increased the slow and damage against monsters on his W (which didnt help all that much in the long run), but then they did something that killed the bug. They removed the 50% damage reduction during his R by evolving it. Kha'Zix almost completely disappeared after the initial batch of people trying him out with the changes. He was no more. They buffed his Q a bit, but it wasnt enough. Kha'Zix mains were in ruin and they were forced to find more unconventional ways of playing the bug. They brought him into the lanes and began to use his W as a very good poking tool. They were doing OK, but the eyes of Riot saw this and forsake the playstyle as an annoying poke play style. They nerfed the higher ranked damage of Kha's W by a decent amount, but really killed it two patches later by increasing the cool down to 10 seconds from 8 seconds, an effective 25% increase. Riot realized that they had just destroyed the last way to play Kha it seems and slightly buffed the radius of Isolation to make it smaller, yet still no where near it's glory days. It was not enough however.

Chapter 3: The Bottom of the Bottom Change is... not good at all it seems. Kha'Zix lay on the bottom of the champion pool, rotting like the bug he is. Riot has recently tried to bring some life back into the bug by buffing his armor by 3 and reducing the mana cost of his Q by 5, but the bug has not even twitched to acknowledge such buffs. So, what did we learn here? Dont nerf the useful part of every single one of a champion's abilities. Then you get a skinny, starving, probably dead Voidreaver that only appears when he is lucky enough for one of his mains to bring him light. Whether he performs well or not is up to the match however, seemingly losing majority of the time anyway.

Thus concludes the story of Kha'Zix, the Voidreaver. Indeed, this piece of League history shows us the absolute worst outcome of Riot's nerf hammer and probably also the worst way to nerf a champion. Have a happy day... unlike Kha.

I remember when bug was good. I like Kha, it sucks that he is so terrible right now. He is simply outclassed by every other assassin right now. I think they need to rework his ultimate, or continue to buff his Q.

Well put by the way, +1.

He's THE worst jungler right now and I can't even imagine how bad he would be in lane. He has so many problems it's appalling. His unisolated Q does as much as an auto attack, his w does almost no damage and a low slow and had a long cool down. His jump is pretty good, mostly when evolved but it does about no damage for an assassin. His ultimate is maybe my least favorite part, 1 second of invisibility is pretty trash for an ulti. The only real use of his ult is to evolve his shitty abilities into less shitty ones. Another reason he's really bad is that he has no AOE damage, I mean it wouldn't be bad if he actually did damage but he really doesn't do any compared to almost any other champion. It's pretty upsetting to see him in this state, he was my first favorite champion back when he was really strong.

He's THE worst jungler right now

Fiddlesticks

MasterSomething1 votes

Fiddlesticks is more Feast or Famine right now. He also depends on your team doing decent for him to do good.

At least Fiddle can solo drag at level 5.

Neomea1 votes

Sadly even some low sustain champs have him beat on even that, vi can solo drag at 2/3

Fowus1 votes

at least fiddle has decent sustain

Captain Kevo1 votes

You make a good point, fiddles does struggle with the new ap item. He does have a lot of potential though.

Kha 'zix is another example of riot having absolutely no idea how a champion's kit will play out in the live servers.

In a way he is like rek'sai except rek'sai ended up being always strong instead of always weak. Kha'zix was supposed to be that evolve and adapt champion, always upgrading what fits him the most and hunting for isolated targets. And after every nerf, players did adapt, upgrading another spell instead of the nerfed one, just so that that spell would also be nerfed.

In the end he now only upgrades the same one or two spells which are mediocre, with the others being bad and noob-traps. Instead of hunting for isolated targets, he walks into a lane hoping he can AOE all the minions around the enemy champion or that his raw burst is enough to kill his target anyway.

Can we get a rioter to tell us riot plans about kha'zix? Or at least if there is something planned for him?

flibitydoo2 votes

they already have

there's new masteries for assassins on the PBE

they're apparently going to introduce a new ad assassin item

and there may be some flat buffs for low winrate assassins

I started playing the game when kha'zix was at his lowest. He's one of the level 6 and under champs so I was exposed to him early on. I thought he looked awesome so I decided to main him.

Kha'zix is still my favorite champion and he is still my #1 main. It took me a really long time to get used to him (I used to think he sucked until I got runes for the jungle), and I'm still learning things every time I play him

I can't say it's been rough being a kha'zix main because this kha is the only one I know. The 3 armor is a much appreciated buff (it's the difference between backing after 2nd buff or ganking top/mid and potentially snowballing the game).

There exists a dedicated playerbase of kha'zix players but his winrate is bogged down because the playerbase does not make up the majority.

Anything I would want to see happen to him? Well currently, I evolve E every game regardless of the situation and always evolve Q second (E or Q first is completely dependent on preference, but those two are always first). What I would like to have is more meaningful evolutions. Everyone (should) get W at level 16 only because it sucks less than his evolved R. Evolved W standalone is actually very useful, it's just really bad compared to the other evolutions. Hopefully having more evolution options would also make him viable in solo lane but I'm fine with just jungling as him.

As for items, the new youmuu's is actually really good on him now and rito already announced a placement for lastwhisper for assassins. So no problems there.

Tl;dr Kha'zix is good if you take the time to learn him but his evolutions aren't meaningful and don't fit his "adapting" theme

Oh and BTW, he should be an assassin, yet EVEN with isolation, same build and level, he loses 1v1 to almost every ADC or other squishy. Way to go, Riot.

From my experience this is an exaggeration

Kha'Zix is still able to kill squishies late game, very well. However, there are some problems with him.

The first is that Kha'Zix isn't really unable to burst anyone down in 2-3 seconds like other assassins. He needs slighty more time, and this can lead to targets being able to fight back, such as, a Vayne kiting and lifestealing all his damage, for example. Also, this gives the squishy's team more time to be able to peel for him/her so Kha'Zix must make sure that the enemy team is dumb enough to leave their squishies alone (which will not happen on organized battles such as LCS).

The second is that thanks to the above problem, Kha'Zix actually needs to build slighty tanky. You shouldn't build completely tanky like before the Q nerfs, but, for example, I've never been able to kill an ADC late game without the help of a item 3143 to protect me for example (to allow Kha'Zix to survive their damage). Other assassins do not need tank items; they can build full damage because their target will not be able to fight back on the first place.

The third is that to be able to kill enemies on the first place, Kha'Zix needs isolation. Without isolation, Kha'Zix hurts as much as Lulu, for example, but Lulu has much more utility to her team. It's only against isolated targets that Kha'Zix is able to assassinate anyone.

Basically the problem is that Kha'Zix is "too healthy". People complain about how other assassins lack counterplay because they are able to kill you instantly - but Kha'Zix is the complete opposite. He has too much counterplay when compared to other assassins.

MasterSomething2 votes

I thought he was just hard to play. I didn't realize he was in such a hard spot.

Captain Kevo3 votes

He is both right now, lol.

Meep Man1 votes

Hard to play and doesn't pay off too much for your efforts

WoonStruck2 votes

He hasn't had it the worst, even if he's had a rough road. You're just being a whiny child.

Assassins themselves aren't healthy. Kha'Zix by concept isn't healthy. That combined with being an assassin makes it even worse on him. Add in that Last Whisper was removed and warding is more prevalent than ever, and he's just in a bad spot.

No point in complaining about him when Riot wants to rework him. Not because he's bad. Because his kit is a nightmare to balance (solely due to his passive) and because his unique ultimate interactions don't deliver on the evolution theme nearly well enough. Kha'Zix is a dead champion only because Riot legitimately wants to delete him and replace him with something new and better.

I really feel like this post was all conjecture. When did Riot say they wanted to nerf him to unviability until he gets a re-work?

As far as I know Riot never really mentioned a rework for Kha'Zix.

They mentioned that they are going to make a rework to assassins in general, similar to the recent Fighter and Marksmen reworks we recently had. However, we will probably get the Mages update first before we get the Assassins update.

BluePolarizer7 votes

pretty sure that Kha'Zix is the hardest nerfed champion in all of league history. He has not received a single buff up to November 15th, 2015. Kha was also one of the assassins that had some decent counterplay.

Actually as explained above he received a buff to the isolation radius. He also received a buff on his W healing. However, those buffs are extremely small and they are not as impactful as the nerfs that he received.

I am surprised that the joke is still "Better nerf Irelia" because she hasn't received nearly as much nerfs as the bug. I expected the joke to change to "Better nerf Kha'Zix" due to this.

Ackelope6 votes

The "Better nerf Irelia" joke exists because it's meant to be sarcastic, as Irelia's not been nerfed nearly at all.

CoolHandJack4 votes

maybe now, but originally "better nerf Irelia" meant a random nerf that came out of no where. It was said because of the random nerfs Irelia would receive season 2ish even when the player base didn't consider her a problem, and champions considered more problematic would go bye unscathed by the nerf-bat of Morello.

That was what I gathered too

Meep Man7 votes

You made me disinterested when you believed me to be whining and then lost me at "Assassins themselves aren't healthy". I honestly don't care or play Kha much myself, I just wanted to point out how rough he's had it, only a few being around him.

It's funny because i'm the 11th person to downvote you

This is entirely incomplete. On release Kha'Zix was considered a complete troll pick. Until one day someone figured out how to make him work in the midlane with Tear, W max, and W first evo. Shortly after the fastest pentakill in competitive history https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF9-E6FTwFA Riot decided to change him from W to Q. After some time on ice everyone realized he was just as strong with Q max and first evo. And that is when he started to take over the jungle, although he was still a force in the mid lane.

I've won it many times

It is really good when you are able to unlock all of his evolutions, but sadly, it is a very rare event.

Yeah it's stupid that an entire aspect of his kit is blocked behind a very rare event.

YumaS2Astral2 votes

Yeah it's stupid that an entire aspect of his kit is blocked behind a very rare event.

The only reason why I didn't suggested to make Kha'Zix's evolutions like Viktor's evolutions (he could unlock all them, with the ultimate being the strongest evolution and automatically unlocked once the other evolutions were unlocked) is because thematically, it wouldn't make sense. Kha'Zix is supposed to adapt to the situation. While this prevents him to be able to unlock his full potential, Riot needs to make sure that Kha'Zix is able to be flexible and adapt to every situation (which currently is impossible, seeing how his W and R evolutions are bad, while Q and E are mandatory)

Ackelope1 votes

They could just make it that once he unlocks any 3, the 4th evo is given to him, idk.

YumaS2Astral2 votes

{quoted}

The problem with that is that it contradicts with Kha'Zix being supposed to adapt to every situation. If he was able to unlock all evolutions he wouldn't adapt, he would fit into every situation.

Ackelope1 votes

No, he could still adapt to each situation, since he still gets to pick at every level... all it does is give him a power-boost post level 16... Sorry for my late reply, especially late by boards standards..

Finally someone said it. Thank you. I have lost hope in Riot ever making this champion viable again in any way. But I am not surprised, ever since S4 ended Riot's incompetence has destroyed the game progressively, until now... it is just a sorry excuse for the great game it used to be.

They will probably never bring him back, after almost two years. But we can at least remember. Just like for everything else Riot's done in the last year and a half.

Kha'Zix is still strong I say as a Kha'Zix Main. I can take almost everyone, unless huge power/item/kill lead, minus tanks. Say I have 250-300 hp. I Ate up a 14/2 Lucian who had full HP, because I know how Kha'Zix Works. I will agree however that it is a bit harder with Killing, But I can Still Make It Work! I Do wish that Riot Would do something for him, bringing a maximum/Percentage of health thing, and possibly buffing the heal or having it increase with AP. Thanks and Have a good Day*[slayer-jinx-catface]*

Gregor Gysi1 votes

That's not correct. Chapter 1 should be called "The degeneracy". Chapter 2 'The consequences' and Chapter 3 'RIP'. At first he was a midlaner who evolved W - E - Q while building tear and shit. Back then I played him Q evolve and toplane. They nerfed his W and buffed Q and R. Nobody played him then except for few people - one of them was me playing him bruiser top (really strong back then). Then with start of season 4 every little shit was suddenly able to sustain in the jungle and Kha was one of them. He was so strong that it was totally obvious that he needs nerfs. They kept hitting him from several directions - but one thing was for sure. Riot wanted to keep him in the jungle (they nerfed him and compensated him with 20% bonus dmg to monsters, wtf). Jungle Kha'Zix is the reason why Kha died. RIP

Forgetting the removal of him being able to w in mid jump? That really ended his first dominant spree.

My friend, the person who introduced me to League, used to main Kha'zix.

Now, according to his ranked statistics, there are 19 champions he plays more than Kha'zix. I can agree that Kha'zix in his prime was deserving of a nerf, but now he's just sad. I don't even play him and I can see that.

Darkwind1 votes

Not a super accurate history in terms of what was nerfed, and what hurt and what didn't.

Once upon a time, Kha'Zix could take down nearly anyone, especially if he could pick them off after a fight. My first penta was on Kha, back when he still had %Missing HP damage. Showed up late to a teamfight, and ate literally everyone. E > Q > E > Q > E > Q > E > Q > E > Q. It made me so happy.

lolipopevelynn1 votes

kha was like the first of 3 champions i bought simultaneously with RP back when i first started the game and the first assassin champion that i played and who caught my eye.

i kinda miss playin him. Khazix Syndra Elise are my nostalgia champs as they are the first champs i bought in this game to start with. Zyra was the 4th i think as i was debating getting her or syndra at the time and i chose syndra.

but the saddest part about kha right now is riot directly stated they wont touch him till they "look at the assassin class as a whole" which translate to ann assassin update similiar to juggernauts and ADC updates. the PROBLEM with that is they also made it very clear it wont be anytime soonn and will come during the middle of 2016 IF we are lucky. so kha will stay at 43% winrate for atleast another half a year.

GL kha mains.
